How to unlock the Old Game Master achievement in Journey to the Savage Planet - Definitive Guide

Hello Everyone,

Old Game Minus is basically no different than the original game except for a few changes:

First, you only start with 3 lives (shared if in co-op). Fortunately, an extra life can be found in each area.
Second, a timer shows at the bottom of the screen, but this does not affect anything and is really only for speedruns.
Third, when you complete the game or die your save is immediately deleted.
Lastly, you MUST defeat Teratomo to complete this mode, simply getting the five fuel canisters is not enough.

Another thing to note is that you cannot change from singleplayer to coop and vice versa due to your save being tied to either-or.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This game is not difficult by any means, and the 3 boss fights are all relatively easy. For Cragclaw, if you use binding bile he cannot attack you, for the floopsnoot matriarch, just focus on the floopsnoots when they spawn, and for teratomo, just take your time and watch out for the jellywaft primes (only time I ever died during both playthroughs).

Here is a speed run for this game that will get you 5 fuel canisters and 28 orange goos to power you up. The only caveat is in the video he just launches back so you will need to finish the game out and defeat Teratomo which adds maybe another 30 minutes to your run. I completed this in under 3 hours easily and is stackable with the "No Refunds" achievement.

And here is the location of the extra lives you can obtain. Although I was never able to get the last one for using the Konami code, but maybe it will work for you. I highly suggest having at least 3-4 lives at all times.

Thanks everyone for viewing this solution. If you would like me to add something, please drop down a comment and I will be happy to add it in.

P.S. these videos are not mine so all credit goes to the video owners.

@Deckers it doesn’t. I tried so many times in co op and single. Finally gave up on it.

Just before dying you can dashboard and exit the game and you won’t lose a life

After following the speed run video, I was absolutely lost on what to do next to progress to the last boss, I have wasted over an hour trying to figure out whether I need double boost, or stomp. Maybe add an extra video after the speed run, to show people the next step to get the achievement, otherwise its a useless addition to the guide. I gave up in the end and wiped my game, I will look for a full guide from start to finish.

Some extra tips to make your run smooth:

1. If you find yourself about to die hit the guide button and quit the game immediately. It did not count the death. When I reloaded I still had all my lives and my materials were out for me to collect in a box.

2. Upgrade your Bombegranate! In the final boss room there are seed pods on the back wall that contain an assortment of varying fruits, and they regenerate fast. I was able to blast through each round of the boss before the jellywafts even spawned by just spamming bombs at Teratomo.

MISSABLE

Notes:
  • This trophy will only pop if your save is created whilst in Single Player.
  • This is missable because if you lose all your lives, the game will delete your save as a punishment for being stupid thus forcing you to start from scratch.
Old School Minus mode is virtually identical to Normal Mode, except for the following changes:

- You only have 3 lives, though more can be obtained by finding the Martin Tweed bobblehead that's in each Biome and entering the cheat I've included in the tips below.
- There is a timer on-screen at all times, though it's mainly there just to annoy you.
- If you lose all your lives, it's game over and the game will delete your save, so you will have to start over from scratch.
- The bad ending has been removed, thus you can't cheat either of these new trophies by finding only 5 Fuel Cells then leaving the planet early without killing Teratomo. You still get away with recovering only 5 Fuel Pods but the story has to be completed to 100%, before you can leave the planet.
- There's an added narration by an unnamed narrator, who announces milestones and generally insults you so is no different to E.K.O in that respect.

Tips:
  • Stay Calm and Focused: The fastest way to lose all your lives and your save, is to panic and do something stupid e.g. annoying the local wildlife then end up falling off a cliff and fumbling a grapple whilst trying to outrun whatever is chasing you. Also, enabling both of the Aim Assist options ( => Options => Controls) will make life much easier for you.

  • Only Upgrade the Essentials: Since you're not getting any of the main game trophies during your Old School Minus runs, you can skip most of the upgrades and just focus on the essentials so see No Refunds for details of how to speed run the game:

  • Find the Martin Tweed Bobbleheads and use the extra lives cheat: There are 3 Extra Life Bobbleheads available so see this video by PlayStation Gameplay to learn their locations: LINK. Extra lives cheat: Enter the following code whilst playing (no pausing needed):- . This cheat will give you 1 additional life but it can only be used once per-playthrough and you can't use it whilst inside the Javelin, because you have to be outside for it to work. Credit to PlayStation Gameplay for discovering this code.

  • Backup your saves: Whilst the game is still fairly easy in Old School Minus mode, there are some sections where it's possible to die and lose a life so backup your saves before doing the following:- The Floopsnoot Queen battle, Entering the Moist Vestibule and working your way down to the Teratomo battle in Vault Floor 4, recovering the item required for the Stomp Boosters upgrade, Activating the Tower's Power Supply, Repairing the 2 broken teleporters, Recovering any Fuel Pods, Alien Alloys or Orange Goos that are in dangerous to access areas.
The trophy will pop the moment you sit in the Captain's Chair but after the final stats screen appears, the game will end and your save will be deleted.

To pass, you must defeat the final boss; you cannot fly away earlier if you have fuel. Only three lives are given. The difficulty doesn't change much, the damage is quite tolerable. Save backups work. It is written that there is a time limit, but I did not find exactly how many hours they give. I completed it in 2:20, but I saw in the guide that I had played for 5+ hours.
You can get more lives by finding Tadpoles (one in three biomes).
