edit - the first 2 levels don't have any. Levels 3-8 have 20 in each level making 120 total. Not sure why it's not mentioned in the text part of this guide.
Edit: Level 7 has none and level 8 has 40 -

It does not appear necessary to finish the level if you are doing cleanup.

You don't have to finish the level, but you do have to hit a checkpoint for it to save. I quit out immediately after grabbing one, and it didn't add it.

Video guide:
There are a total of 120 Fireflies to collect throughout the game. All of them are found in Estoria chapters; none in the diary chapters. Starting with E3, there are 20 per chapter, except E7 which has none, and E8 which has 40 instead of 20.
Despite the seemingly large number of collectibles, thankfully almost all of them are either directly in your path or are very obvious on the screen and simply require a couple extra seconds to grab before moving on. As a result, I will not bother listing the locations of every single one, as this would be both tedious for me but also slow you, the reader, down while you continually stop to consult this guide. Instead, I have only listed the less obvious fireflies here, so you can just check the handful per chapter to ensure you don't miss them. This also saves you from wasting your time watching a video guide when most of the collectibles don't require one.

Estoria 3
- Once you reach the plants that retract and you're BREAKing some blocks, there is a platform up and to the left with a firefly on it.
- Right after obtaining SILENCE, you'll need to head back the way you came, to the left. You'll immediately encounter a retracting plant. Use SILENCE on it and climb up to find a firefly.
- When you use RISE on the sand to have it slowly rise up, make sure to grab a firefly on each side of the area you're scrolling up through.
- At one point you'll start chasing the djinn to the right, and it will be spawn blocks and columns in your way. DO NOT use BREAK on them. Keep your firefly out of the way, because the third set of blocks is a larger column that you need to climb up to reach a firefly. If you mess up, reload your checkpoint and you'll start back at the beginning of the chase.
- After leaving the hut where you decide what kind of people lived there, you'll head right and need to BREAK down a statue to continue. Before crossing it, head down and BREAK the blocks to find a firefly under the above statue.
- Right after obtaining HOPE, you'll start into a dark tunnel where you need to use HOPE to see. Right near the beginning, the path splits and you can either go up or down. Go down first, to a dead end to find a firefly.
- Right at the start of the level, BREAK the blocks on your left to find a firefly before continuing right.
- When you reach the end of the first moving platform, hop up onto the platforms to grab the firefly before continuing through the stalactites you need to BREAK.
- Right after the above one, use RISE on the first platform you reach to launch up to a firefly.
- At the end of the level with the final moving platform (after using BURN on the fuse to start it moving), there are the final five fireflies to collect. They're all obvious, and if you miss one you can just hop into the lava to respawn and try again, but be aware of them. The only one to take note of is the fourth on this platform, which is high up. You can jump to it straight from the moving platform, but you need to be close to the peak of your jump to reach it.
- Make sure to head back left from the first BREAKable tree to collect the firefly before proceeding to the right.
- Right after learning SWAP, you'll need to SWAP with Lump to reach the top of a tree. SWAP once to go up one level, then head right to grab a firefly before heading back to SWAP up to the top.
- Shortly after that tree, you'll come to another tree you need to SWAP to the top of. SWAP with Lump three times to get all the way to the top, which is where a firefly is.
- Right after the above, slide down the vine next to you and jump to the right to get another firefly.
- After crossing the broken bridge and having a cutscene with Lump, you'll have to BREAK some blocks below you. BREAK the one to the right and go through to get a firefly before heading back and using RISE on the glowing block to go up.
- As you drop down and get your first firefly, which is nearly impossible to miss, you'll get to a point where you need to drop left or right. Grab the firefly on each side before choosing a side (doesn't matter which you choose).
- In the bottom center of the section you're now in is a hole you can fall through with a firefly visible right in the hole. This is the 10th firefly of the level, so only drop down to collect it once you have nine fireflies. This area is actually symmetric, so any fireflies you get on the left will be in the same places on the right. There are therefore three on the left and three on the right, in mirrored places. Make sure to grab them all and have 9/20 fireflies before dropping down into the hole and grabbing the tenth.
- Shortly after that, you'll be falling down and BREAKing coral to proceed down. Make sure you keep your firefly/BREAK high up on the screen so you don't accidentally BREAK coral before having a chance to grab a firefly off to the side. This happens twice on the way down, so keep your cursor at the top of the screen while you fall.
- Right after those two, you'll have to BREAK coral under you four times in a row. WARNING: on the way down after the fourth coral will be another coral wall with a firefly behind it on the left but NO platfom to stand on to grab it. You therefore need to keep BREAK next to you on your left while falling and hold left towards it so you don't miss it. Right after that is an identical one on the right side, so do the same there. If you miss either, reload your checkpoint to respawn before you fell and try again.
- After the long fall and dialogue, head all the way left first to get a firefly before proceeding right.
- While difficult to miss, there is a firefly on a platform amongst the frozen Seakin at the end of the chapter when everything is covered with snow.
- Near the beginning you'll reach some plants that used to retract but don't now. Climb up them to get a firefly.
- After jumping off the cliff, head left to grab a firefly right at its base.
- Right after the above, you'll use RISE to go up. Stop at the first ledge on the right and grab a firefly there before returning to RISE up further.
- When you get inside and use BURN to light torches, you'll come to stairs you need to REPAIR. In case you didn't notice it, there is a firefly on the right that you'll need to crawl under the REPAIRed stairs to reach.
- After using RISE on a pillar to go high up into another dark room with torches, SWAP to the room on the left side for a firefly and also the room on the right for another firefly.
- Much later, after IGNOREing some lava pools and a bit of platforming, you'll eventually have to climb up a long vine. Before jumping off it to continue right, climb all the way to the top for a firefly on the left.
- After the cutscene back in your village, you'll need to head left. Climb up the first climbable chain to the top for a firefly.
- Just after the above, do the same with the second climbable chain to grab two more fireflies.
- Once you get back in the water, since the fireflies blend in a little more, make sure to grab the firefly directly above you with RISE, and then as you're swimming around with RISE, grab another high up near the ceiling in the hallway.
- After BREAKing and REPAIRing a tree to proceed, you'll have to climb up a vine. Ignore the tunnel on the left and instead climb to the top to find a firefly, then go back to that tunnel to proceed.

If you replay chapters in search of missed fireflies, previously collected ones will not appear. The chapter must be completed to the end for the “completed” fireflies to be counted
