How to unlock the Explorer achievement in Mafia II: Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide

Introduction
No disrespect to the other solutions, but I'm going to be posting my own because the guides only show the location and don't explains some crucial things. The Xbox 360 guide is very good, so credit to HellCreeper666 for some helpful information years ago. This glitch is a very historic one, so I'm not sure who originally found it, but I don't claim any credit for the method itself. This is also the best method for unlocking the following, which should unlock during one of your glitch-sessions:

Mafia II: Definitive EditionMillionaireNoHeroes94The Millionaire achievement in Mafia II: Definitive Edition worth 107 pointsEarn 1,000,000 points in "Jimmy's Vendetta"

Note you'll need a USB charger cable compatible with the Xbox One controller and something to rubber band the right tigger (hair bobble/celotape)

Glitch Method
Firstly, you need to go to the location in the below picture.

External image

Then, you need to drive through the window at the below 'Luncheonette' store/resteraunt.

External image

If you approach at the right speed, you'll drive through the window and fall through the map for eternity. You will also accumulate mileage whilst you do this, and never run out of gas (it will say you're running low but never actually run out). A good visual indicator of the right speed is to reverse back from the shop to the chain fence and drive forward from there (too fast/slow and you'll just crash into the wall).
I've linked a 2020 video showing this if you prefer a video description (credit to Piotr Swat for video and above screenshots).

Very Important Points:
- Firstly, you will want to connect your controller to your USB charger cable and also rubber band your right trigger (RT). Doing both is mandatory, as otherwise your game will pause every 10 minutes (I tried just the cable originally, but without pressing a button it would still auto-pause). I found using one of my fiancée's standard skinny hair bobbles worked extremely well; celotape was something I've used for other games too as an alternative.

- Secondly (and probably over-conservatively) I recommend you take control before the 1000 mile mark (I'd recommend 980-990 miles) . Do the glitch until 980-990 miles and do the last 10-20 miles 'normally'. Some commenters are saying this unlocked whilst hitting 1000 miles mid-glitch, but from my experience, this didn't work and I had to quickly reload and manually drive the last 10-20 miles.

- Thirdly, saving your progress is very important as the game has a tendency to crash and quit to dashboard (happened to me 4-5 times). Changing any option in the options menu (i.e. brightness under Video) will prompt a save when you back out to the pause menu and save your game statistics progress. Do this regularly! I recommend that you're actually around whilst doing this and saving every 1-3 hours or so. I personally left it on overnight twice to find no progress had been made either time as the game crashed to dashboard mid-sleep. If you save regularly you don't lose much progress if the game crashes. Just amending an option will save your progress, so this is extremely easy. Just leave this on as you get on with your day/play on another console/watch something/read something/work from home, etc. and check every once in a while to save and check.

Overall it took me around 20-25 hours of rubber banding.

Final note - Your statistics save, and can be checked via the pause menu in game statistics. This shows your driving stats exclusive to Jimmy's Vendetta, so don't worry. If you check your garage, vehicles will show 0 miles driven after a save/re-load, but they will accumulate to your game statistics and this is all that matters. Thanks to Dylan XBA for the question, as I didn't explain this very well!

The achievement popped for me while I was in the glitch for both the 360 and definitive editions. However, I did save at 990 miles for both versions just in case it didn’t pop I could still dashboard back to 990 miles.

I've amended point 2 from a mandatory step to a recommendation. It 100% didn't work for me, but if it does for some, then I'll mention that. THank you @BlackRain228

Historically you were always best saving at around 990 and driving the last 10 miles. Hopefully you'll unlock this eventually I have no more advise than the solution I'm afraid. Don't forget this is exclusive to the Jimmy's Vendetta DLC

Glitch 100% works, did the entire achievement with it aside from the last 13 miles. I recommend you try the Roller car and maybe watch the above video.

Can I ask how you are saving your progress. I have gone into game settings and changed subtitles on/off etc and it brings up the save icon at the top, but when I either quit out or re-load checkpoint, none of the progress has been saved, even dash-boarding just brings me back to my previous total, thanks

I would also change video brightness. Any setting change should work if you see the vinyl saving icon.

Oh, sorry, yes the points don't save I don't think. They are a points bonus, whereas the miles is a game stat. You'll unlock Millionaire in around 3.5 hours of 'one run' though. Miles should always save.

I refuse to play this again just for the fact they left this achievement in. How clueless can a dev possibly be?

Remember these are the same devs that pushed an updated that broke the 4k resolution. This was a pain in the original, I like completions more that sticking it to devs. lol

if you drive the 1k miles its 12 to 14 hours you save 8 to 10 hours driving legit

By GTAmissions4 on 07 Aug 2020 11:46
@furko24 Driving legit is indeed quicker, but you have to do literally nothing whilst doing this boost. IMO it's not worth the time doing it legit because it is soul-destroying when I can just leave it passively, but each to their own.

The only way I would of did the driving legit was if there was no alternative idle boost.

@v WINTERBURN v I have limited time atm but I'll see if I can test on the weekend for you. Would be very, very odd if they have because this was in the OG game in 2010 and there have been other Mafia II patches for this remaster.

It works, you jest need to hit the wall fast enough, around 60 mph/s will be enough. Unfortunately, my controller is turning off after 30 minutes even when RT is rubber banded, any idea how to fix that?

By MF Draco on 22 Oct 2020 06:28
You need to use a USB cable as well, @MF Draco. Mention this in the solution. This is so the rubber band doesn't time out.

Yeah, I know, I plugged my controller via usb cable to my console and it still getting disconnected due to inactivity.

edit: thanks for your help, all good now, I tried different cable and everything is working nów.

How frequent are crashes on Series X? Ran this for 4 hours last night for the score-based achievement with no issue but chose not to leave it running due to the crash-related comments.

Also unless I'm mistaken you don't need to hold down RT, I'm able to make progress without it, or does it speed up the achievement?

I was wondering what Wulftek was as well, since progress is being made, does holding down RT make a difference?

In regards to the shop window glitch...... I think this has finally been patched 15/04/21. Just tried doing it for an hour and nothing. Tried multiple different cars and speeds and still nothing. I even put the trash bin by the Curbside to get a little jump and still nothing. I am on the definitive editon so may be different on 360 version. Can anyone confirm this?

Hey Bro it works just fine. I can even say that the mileage builds up a bit faster.. I`ve got xbox one X and all updates both for console and game. Try to speed up at least to 40 mph or point ur vehicle into diffrent shop section. Cheers mate !

Does holding RT makes it faster ?
0

By RyanDunn0554 on 18 Apr 2021 16:02
@RyanDunn0554 , Holding RT is necessary to prevent game from pausing every 10 minutes, which stops progress.

Got it, thanks for this. Just for reference 1609km is 999.7862 miles and 1610km is 1000.408 miles for when your checking the game statistics.

I didn't have to drive the last X miles myself as it unlocked while I was still freefalling but thats the number conversions in case anyone wanting to know when checking their progress.

My controller still turn off in about 15 minutes , with rubber band the RT button , i am using a wireless Xbox one controller on the Xbox series s. Did they patched the method for let the controller idle , or am i doing something wrong?

By ClaudioChamp on 25 Jul 2021 23:00
To respond to Claudio, you need to both rubberband your controller AND have a usb cable connected to your controller, if you just rubberband your controller will still turn off due to inactivity, even with a button pressed, to save battery, the cable keeps your controller from turning off since it’s actively being charged. Hope this helps.

Did this once during the 360 days, and never again. Shame, because I liked the game and would have bought the remaster, but this achievement is legitimately fucking stupid and pointless. I refuse to buy it solely because they didn't get rid of this ridiculous garbage or at least cut the requirements by 75%.

By The SCHWARTZ 00 on 02 Jan 2022 19:24
If your controller keeps turning off even if you have it plugged in and the Right trigger rubber banded Make sure you have your controller plugged Directly into the Xbox from a USB port. The Xbox will then recognize that the controller is receiving power from itself. If it is plugged into a brick into the wall then your controller will keep turning off or going idle

How long would take without glitch? What if actually literally drove the miles in the game by hand manually: No glitches used? Would that take like a matter of days? Weeks? a matter of months? A matter of years?

@AcknowledgeMe - well, if the speedometer is accurate to the distance traveled... the highway where the speed limit is 70mph will take 14.3 hours to reach 1000 miles. According to some of the posts, it does appear to be pretty realistic in that regard...

After finishing all the missions and getting all the other Jimmy's Vendetta achievements, I had 185 miles.

Did it as legit as possible last time because it takes less time to reach 1000 miles imo, but sometimes I'd resort to the glitch - took me 3 days worth of trying to get it.

Edit: No need to rubberband the controller, I was using a wired controller too.

I'd prefer to use the glitch while working from home and only drive when I need to to try and speed up the milage.

Not sure why they added 1000 miles in a DLC since I didn't drive anywhere close to that on the main game

Just wanted to add this achievement took me about 50 hours! Hot tip, every couple of hours you HAVE to save. The amount of times I'd comeback and my Xbox had crashed was ridiculous. Otherwise easy solution, thumbs up. I used electrical tape to hold RT down and it left no marks on the controller after.... 4 days of attempting this. Thanks!

I didn’t realise just how annoying this is I just met the requirements and it didn’t pop I hope I don’t have delete my game data just to get this done even starting a new save Carry’s over all stats with it all this hassle for as little as 10g
Edit: I deleted my saved data from everywhere started over met the requirements again and drove the last 10 miles and still didn’t pop so much effort for a 10g achievement that seems to be bugged on me

BAD NEWS EVERYONE! THIS GAME'S WORST ACHIEVEMENTS HAS RETURNED!

But thankfully the glitch is still working, but it's sitll gonna take ages though...

Also during the process make sure you save sometimes by changing the options in the case the game would freeze.

This trophy will probably be the last in your acquisition, unless you use the exploit present in the DLC. To do this, go to the location indicated on the map below. From there, rush into the window in front of you to find yourself in free fall. You will need around 40 hours to accumulate the kilometers, at a rate of 20 kilometers in 4 hours.

Glitch note: For my part, even having reached the 1,609 kilometers, the trophy didn't pop. I returned to the last save point which thus returns to the map while maintaining your progress. I went to one of Jimmy's apartments to save my game. I quit the game and relaunched it. As soon as I opened a car door, the trophy popped.

Credit: Mafia Wiki

Chen Chan GAMING has video showing the exploit in action: LINK

Otherwise you can do it by upgrading your Ascot Bailey in a workshop. From there, follow the motorway turns. You can follow your progress in the menu by going: Options => Statistics => Distance traveled by car.

You will likely have only driven around 150 miles by the time you finish the story. So this is likely to be a big grind. There are two options for grinding out all of these miles. The first option is the fastest, but is completely manual, meaning you'll need to be actively playing the entire time, which will be a solid 20 hours of doing nothing but driving. Head to the freeway (yellow road on map) and keep driving from one head to the other. You can get a good speed so will cover miles quicker. If you start running out of gas, just steal another car and carry on.

The second method involves using a glitch in the map. This method is slower, but allows you to idle the game so you can do something else (go to work, sleep, etc.) which you progress towards this achievement. There is a clothing store in the southwest corner of the map that has a window you can drive through. The car will break the display window and you will free fall through the bottom of the map. You can average about 30 miles every hour. After you drive through the window and start falling, know that you do still need to band your controller to hold down the gas pedal in order to accumulate miles driven. Also be aware that there are reports of the achievement not unlocking if 1000 miles are reached while in the glitch spot. Instead, get close (990 miles or more) and then save, and quit. Reload the game, and drive the remaining mileage legitimately, and the achievement should unlock. Lastly, in order to save your progress while in the glitch, pause the game, go to Options, and then Game Options, and turn subtitles on or off. This will force a save when you leave the menu, saving your statistics.
