How to unlock the Explorer achievement in Mafia II - Definitive Guide

I made this video to point out the location for the unlimited points glitch on the city map.
All Credit for the original guide goes to RudeN4t3d4w6.

Make sure you save the game (options menu) at approx. 990 miles, load your last save and then just drive the last 10 miles.

Hope it helps toast

UPDATE:

Glitch also works for the RUS & JP version of the game.

I had to do it twice! First time I was on 1200+ miles and it did not unlock for me. The 2nd time I had 999 miles, saved the game and on 1000 it still did not unlock. All I did was replay it 3 more times from my 999 miles save and it unlocked. Took me 60 hours from 0-999 miles. Sometimes your car does lots of miles and sometimes fuck all. Hope it helps ;-)

Well sorry to tell you... but you gona have to restart all over. Delete your game save, start a new game and make sure to save before 1000 miles. After you saved on 990+ miles load last save. Now all you have to do is drive the last few miles. Hope it helps mate!

Still works. But i have a warning to anyone going for this, if you use the glicth to get the points/miles before getting the 1000 kills then that achievement might not pop. This happend to me, over 1200 kills and no achievement, have to wipe my save and start from scratch.

July 11th 2014, glitch is not working for me. I've tried countless times with different cars but i just get stuck on the two window bars in the middle. I noticed I had to download an update recently. Did they really bother patching a 4 year old game or was the update do to me clearing my system cache. Any help would be appreciated.

By Siguardius on 20 Jun 2015 16:34
This is a great hands-off method so thumbs up but this would go faster if the car didn't transition from "Velocity" to "Jump" as your car is falling (it's probably the main reason why you don't gain a lot of miles per hour this way).

NellumNai - You have to stop at 999 (Save by changing something in the settings), reload, and then drive properly for the final mile for it to pop.

I did the same thing on my very first run though, way back when.

This was the worst example how to stretch out a very short piece of DLC into houuuuuurs more gameplay, for only 10g.
This goes on par with the 10g in Max Payne 3 for finishing the game without dying once....

By TheBongoFury on 11 Apr 2016 09:49
This shouldn't even be an achievement it's just stupid the gamerscore amount is irrelevant! I don't even care about individual achievement amounts anymore I just complete everything. No deaths in Max Payne 3 was great! Such an awesome feeling to get that done, and if you are not going for all the achievements why go for that so who cares about the 10g it's the 1000 that matters!

There's usually some kind of work around for stuff like this. When will they learn if it's stupid and unrealistic waste of time someone will figure out something else!

Something I noticed via Backwards Compatibility, I use the fall glitch, but my Wired or Wireless controller on Xbox One doesn't keep the game going. Mind you, I have rubberband the thumbsticks and triggers. There seems to be no option on the Xbox One for turning Idle off, but you can stretch it to 60 minutes max in the menus. Going for the Million point achievement, I had to carry the controller around pressing 'X' every few minutes while I watched TV in the other room. I found it incredibility frustrating while trying to set it up while I go to bed. Anyone have a suggestion for BC users?

I've seen it mentioned that using a DLC car at any time during Jimmy's Vendetta will cause this achievement to glitch. I can confirm that this is NOT the case. I used DLC cars during some of the missions but the achievement still unlocked for me first time I got to 1,000 miles after going through the shop window and freefalling for hours.

Note that this achievement is still extremely buggy. I recommend saving the game at somewhere around the 995 mile mark and then doing the remaining mileage. It took me 5 times to reach the 1000 mark from this point for the achievement to unlock.

Lmao... In 8 hours over night, I went up roughly over 250 miles.

It took 4 nights of that. 32 hours. I did both the Definitive Edition, and 360 Version back to back. They both took me the same amount of time for this achievement.

I have no clue why it would take you 72 hours, you clearly did something wrong.

i have tried several vehicles and i found that fully tuned ascot bailey is the best for this. i am averaging 35 miles an hour with it.

a smith thunderbolt fully tuned, gets a decent 28 miles an hour.

the ISW 500 gets about 25. (note: it was NOT fully tuned...i only had gotten it to the customized chassis)

and finally, a shubert beverly gets a pedestrian 22 miles an hour. do NOT use it. you might as well get a fuel tanker if you want it to take that long!

yup, sucks a big one. I'm currently doing it again. Leaving my 360 on while I'm out at the gym and hanging with my girl. This time I'm only going to glitch to 950 and drive the last 50 miles. If it doesn't work this time, then I give up.

Got it today.

My advice for those who might stumble upon this post: do not fully upgrade the car you choose to glitch with, get it up to a level 2 at most, and do not drive any miles with a DLC car. The first time I attempted it, I glitched half the miles with a fully upgraded Potomac Elysium or whatever it's called and the other half with an Ascot Bailey. Didn't pop for me. I started a second game on a Cloud save and used nothing but an Ascot Bailey up to level 2. I also glitched to 950 miles and drove the final 50+ miles normally. Popped right at 1000 miles.

Finally done with this silly ass shit. If Mafia 3 has anything remotely close to this, I will NOT buy that shit!

Ainda funciona em 25/05/2022. No X360

I made really good experiences with a fully tuned Ascot Bailey. I drove through the two sets of fences opposite of the window to get some speed and then fixed the RT button. With this method, I was able to get about 45 - 50 km (around 30 miles) an hour. Should take about 40 hours.

1000 miles = 1609,34 km
Just to help out fellow europeans since our stats are tracked in kilometers instead of miles. Unlocked with no problem for me, boosted to around 1587km then drove the rest on the highway.

This is a breakdown of miles/mile per hour for the 3 methods mentioned to grind this achievement out. I got all of these with a super-charged Ascot Bailey.

Unlimited Point Glitch = 21-23/mph. This was with a rubber band holding down Right Trigger. Best for bedtime boosting.

Reverse Circles = 12-15/mph. Slowest method by far because gas actually has a direct effect.

Driving the Bridge = 70-75/mph. Defiantly the fastest but requires you to actually do it, therefore the most boring.
** Bridge Tip** - To get the best time out of this, I filled to a full tank then went and started "Walker Rocket Theft" on the map left of the bridge. I would then quit out so it saves my car there with a full tank of gas. Then whenever I ran out of gas or wrecked my car, I would just change an option to save then reload last checkpoint. Instant fresh car with a full tank and a short trip back to the bridge. Downside is the points don't save, just the miles.

Hope that helps people in deciding which method to go with. Good Luck!

Whenever I use a method that doesn't require me to be there, I use a controller that plugs in so it will not turn off. If you can't plug in your controller I recommend doing the Drive the Bridge method. I did that for the bulk of my miles.

I tried this out considering it takes 40 hours, and a 5 hour average with the trigger banded and not banded was both 25 mph. The rubberbanded gas pedal makes no difference whatsoever.

@datDandyx: You need to go into the options menu and change a setting (subtitles is the easiest) and it will save the miles.

Can confirm that I am still running the glitch and racked up roughly around 600 to 700 miles. That is the only way to save your progress.

Glitch still working as of June 3/20. Will report back once achievement unlocks.

EDIT: Just unlocked it after doing the last final miles. Stopped the glitch at 990 miles and driven the rest

When I do that it shows me the saving animation/logo. But when I go to load the save it puts me back to where I last saved manually.

EDIT: I just checked again. The game counts the miles but not the points. Sorry. :)

This solution is the "Be There Without Being There" method. While it may be easier, and causes less boredom; it does take longer to do. This method is recommended for those that don't want to actually sit there and grind this out, thus, you will be leaving your 360 on for a long period of time for this recommended method. Generally, you will get around 60-75 miles per 8 hour hour run with this method, but the good news is you can be doing something else to pass your time.

First, make sure you're playing the DLC, as the miles from the main story do not count towards this achievement. With that being said, you'll want to find a nice open area with no traffic or obstacles to block your path; I suggest the dock area. When I first started to do this method, I usually would go with a Thunderbird - it seemed to have the best results in terms of staying in a descent circle. But then I tried it with a Cossack (car you get only from Made Man dlc pack) and felt that it maintained a higher speed when driving in a circle. It also didn't seem to do the jerky slow down when you ran out of gas.

If you have a wired controller, it works great, since you don't have to worry about it shutting off. When you get it set up how you want, wrap a rubber band around your controller to where the left joystick is facing right. Afterwards, tape the left trigger down. Once that's set up, watch your car for a few minutes to make sure it's going in a descent circle to where the car won't collide into anything. The reason I choose to go in reverse is because it causes the care to align in a near perfect circle. When accelerating forward, the donuts are not very consistent, and you will be stuck into something not long after you begin boosting. While there is an issue with fuel in the game, even though the car runs out of it, it will still go (slowly).

An additional add on for when you are feeling masochistic, is to drive on the bridge back and forth since it is 1 mile long. If you are one of the lucky few that have the Made Men DLC content in your game, then this tip applies to you. When you have your RL-3000 (fastest car in the game) take it to the body shop and buy the best wheels for it, along with the highest possible upgrade. This makes the bridge method a lot faster since you can reach higher speeds at a quicker rate. Whenever you are running low on gas, or you've wrecked your car too much, just take it back to your home's garage and park it. When you reopen the garage, pick that car. You should have a car in perfect condition with more fuel! Also, if you were wanting to keep the city score you get, you can do that by saving inside the house you're at.

The way I myself have been doing it is while I'm at sleep or work, I'll use the rubberband method. When I'm actually at home and am in the mood to play video games, I'll grind out a few miles, just so I'm speeding the process up. Once I start to feel pretty bored, I'll stop and play something else. This is a really long grinding achievement, and I'd rather do smaller sessions than go too overkill.

Note: If you have a problem with your game freezing, you can save your miles by simply pressing start, going to options, game settings, then toggle subtitles on/off. When you back out it will save your miles! Just make sure to save often, you really can't go wrong with saving too much. Also, I've heard reports of people's achievement not unlocking - if that's the case, save around the 995 mile mark and retry the game. Usually they will unlock it by doing this. But if they save after the 1000 mile mark, they were screwed.

The video below shows a good straight away area to drive on, along with the achievement unlocking.

Just to add that when you are doing the glitch that's in the solution i posted for the millionaire achievement, make sure that you save before you hit the 1000 miles because this achievement is known to glitch for some like it did for me with the achievement not popping up at 1000 miles. You can save by changing say the subtitles in the option while you are doing the glitch. Trust me you don't want to have to go through having to start from scratch its very annoying and time consuming.

I'm not sure why no one mentioned this, but if you attach a rubberband to the RT, you will get more miles while using the car falling glitch.
Can any one else confirm this?
Does everyone know this already so they don't add it?
For example, I get about 12-15 miles for an hour ( approximate, It was an estimate) Whereas, if I used the rubber band on the trigger, I got 20+ miles for a half an hour. It's not huge,, but it takes less time this way.
Obviously you need a wired controller. And a rubberband.
It says you are running out of fuel, but I am testing this now and so far after 20 minutes of doing this it hasn't ran out of gas so I guess it never does.
The only difference I see is, on the speedometer the needle still bounces from 0-70, but instead of the tachometer just staying at around 10 or so, it jumps up to almost 140.
Try it and comment if it takes less time for you or not.

Edit: confirmed by Dillagence

If you would prefer to drive the 1,000 miles ( I don't blame you if you don't it is very boring ) There is a nice little circuit that you can follow, just keep going around and around it all day long.

. Head to the bridge that goes from Greenfield to Little Italy and go across to Little Italy.

. From little Italy, work your way to the freeway junction ( the one near Joe's apartment ). Join the Freeway southbound and go all the way around. ( from the bridge go down the hill to the very bottom, turn left go to Diamond motors, then right and then left and follow the road up and onto the freeway)

. When you have gone all the way round, you will be back at the bridge junction. Go left and down the hill and start over and keep on going until you have the 1,000 miles!

. Or go all the way around the freeway to Dipton, go round the sidestreets and then back onto the freeway going the other way and do a u-turn at the bridge and do that over and over.

Doing this achievement this way I got this in 4-5 days. I was covering both routes to add a bit of variety ( even though it isn't much ) which was around 200 miles a day. The freeway is around 5 miles each way from one end to another and the bridge is approx 1 mile each way if you want to add that to the route also. I used the Ascot Bailey fully tuned and if you crash or die your miles will not be affected. I was rammed over the side of the freeway a few times by drivers when I was doing this.

Most people may not do the achievement this way as it is very boring but for those who do hope this guide helps you out!

I just got this on a new save game cause first time it glitched. I recommend not using dlc or upgraded vehicles cause there is rumored speed glitch that stop this achievement. Rumored speed was above 145mph. my top speed on new save is 123mph, old save I had 155mph.

Fastest way to get this achievement is to drive at the bridge and highway's back and forth, honk your horn to make cars move out of the way. On my second save i had 70 or so hours cause i used rubberband method and reverse on the docks (credits to ABouncingSoul) to slowly gain miles while I sleep **NOTE** use normal not simulation driving setting to spin near perfect circles when boosting.

Near the end after boosting 620 miles and driving 380 miles on bridge/highway i got to 1000.19 miles, I got out and shot the gas tank (suggested on forums) and waited 1 minute and finally got it.

Recommended vechicles for bridge/highway: Smith Thunderbolt and Ascot Bailey. You can steal a new one driving around when your low on gas or smoking engine.

Save your game once in awhile incase the game freezes by going to menu/options and change a setting this will save all stats but city score. To keep your city score save at a safehouse/home. Make a backup save on usb/memory card around 995 miles incase it doesnt unlock.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Boosting Method:
Find an open, empty area and park your car. Use rubberband or duct-tape to on the LT (hold it down) and Left Analog stick (fix it to the left). This causes the car to reverse in circles over and over again. The car will run out of fuel but will keep moving. It's a slow and painful method, but at least you can go out of the house while the duct-tape/ rubberband do the driving for you.

Make sure you use a wired controller too. Wireless controllers tend to go off after a while even when duct-taped. - Optimus Neeker.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Boosting Locations:
1 - Outside warehouse on the docks by vehicle theft delivery.
2 - In the dead center of the park. - Skurkitty.

As a heads-up, the longer you're in the infinite fall pit from the glitch, the faster you start to rack up miles. Meaning if you have an estimate of how many MPH you can get, throw your estimate out the window, since you seem to start to rack up miles faster the longer you're down there.

Just so you don't miss the 1,000 mile mark and potentially get screwed by the glitch.

I am currently working on this and can confirm that the glitch does work. However one thing that i will mention is to disable the auto shutoff on your console as after a matter of time your console will shut down and all that hard work will be for nothing. To do this just go into settings on the dashboard ,console settings and disable auto shut off. This means you can go for as long as you like without any fear of shutting down, although you may want to keep your tv on (with the sound off as jimmy gets annoying) . Ive tried this both ways and my console kept shutting down after the tv was switched off even though the console was still on. Please remember to save at regular intervals, i think someone above mentioned the best way to do this, and good luck

Luckily this isn't tied to a specific vehicle but that is a lot of driving. Once your total distance travelled reaches 1,000 miles you'll receive this trophy.

unwraper1 has discovered a glitch that currently allows you to get this trophy by falling through the map. Getting the trophy via this method will take roughly 30-35 hours of falling, depending on your starting score. See the video below and this post by AJ1127 for details on where to start. To get the trophy via this method, turn off your controller's power saving function and plug it in to a USB cable to prevent it from turning off for any reason, then I would advise you to do this over several nights or leaving your PS3 on overnight and saving your progress in the morning. To save your progress, simply select "Restart Last Checkpoint" from the start menu, then go to any mission and start it to trigger an autosave. Your progress will be retained the next time you start the game. This has been tested and confirmed as working.

A map showing where this location is can be found here.

In fact, everything can be done much easier in just 30 - 35 hours of doing nothing.

1.Disable the power saving mode of the joystick.
2.Connect the USB cable to it.
3. Video guide .
4.Save progress through "Restart Last Checkpoint".

5. after "Restart Last Checkpoint" we do not exit the game, but go home and save the game! If this is not done, the mileage counter is reset.

If you hover in textures for more than 2.5-3 hours, then when you save by changing the settings, you will be kicked out of the game, and the statistics will not be saved
I wasted about 50 hours like this, every time I was thrown out of the game
I recommend saving your progress every 2 hours. Through changing settings or "loading last checkpoint" and then home
Info for PS 4, update 08/22/2020, patch 1.02.

As of April 28, 2016 The glitch with a car flying over the city works. I don’t see the point in wasting time and nerves on getting this “trophy” and working on it honestly. Don't forget to save your progress through Menu - Change settings.

Forget about using this glitch. The game will always throw you into the menu for the simple reason that the joystick remains inactive - rewound is not taken into account, because the buttons must be pressed and not held down, the game will always be paused. In general, the tip is a complete failure, no one wins a trophy in such an idiotic way.

Take a car (I recommend a fully upgraded Smith Thunderbolt, because this is the only fastest car equipped with a roof, i.e. if you roll over, you won’t die, unlike convertibles) and drive in circles until you’re blue in the face. If you really want a trophy, then endure it. On average, you need 13-15 hours, provided that you covered 150-200 miles during the plot. Here is a map, it is slightly different from the one suggested in the other tip for the simple reason that here the route is longer and you will remain on the highway the entire time:

I advise you to press the square every 10 minutes when “flying” to nowhere, that is, to signal so that you don’t get paused.

About the glitch.

It works and you don’t need to resume the game every 10 minutes. Just hold down any TWO buttons on the gamepad.

As a quick tip, you can place a piece of cardboard under the shift keys (thereby locking them in the pressed state) and the game will not go to the menu for the entire 35 hours.

Oh yes, if you run out of gas, it won’t affect your mileage in any way.

The message will flash, but the miles will continue to accrue.

To prevent the game from periodically throwing you into the menu, you should refuel the car before using the glitch! And once in the abyss, rewind the button ("Gas") with tape. After which you can safely put the joystick aside for the designated 30-35 hours.

PS Although to be sure, I advise you to sometimes check how the process is progressing!

Using a bug, I clocked up about 1,100 miles, but the trophy never came out. I saved the statistics and tried to drive the car around the city, but the trophy never came out. But after I turned off the game and tried to drive around the city again, the trophy immediately fell out.

Half an hour before receiving the trophy, the game froze.
Don't make the same mistake - take breaks and save periodically

ATTENTION! This trophy may not appear the first time, it’s better to do so
like I did, drive about 995 miles, complete any task
where transport is not involved (go to the task on foot so as not to accumulate miles) after completion, all statistics will be saved.
When entering the game, wait until all accounts are loaded
if you have a link, you can then ride the required miles; if for some reason you don’t fall out, we do it all again.

Saving statistics works as a means of completing the task. Tested on miles and blown up vehicles.
Example, I had 270 miles, I drove 400, loaded the last point and left the game, the next time I entered the statistics rolled back. Don't repeat the same mistakes.

The car from the tip above covered only 36.5 km in 1 hour, but the car from the last mission of the car dealer (convertible, Ascot Bailey), upgraded to level 3, covered 56.5 km in 1 hour.

Take only a walker rocket (pumped up to maximum in the workshop) - because... it’s heavy (weight) and just as fast - all this together gives the maximum squeeze of miles in the bug, everything has already been tested and compared. There is no need to save additionally in the house; the game will save this progress when you change the settings in the menu.
And also, don’t try to put flight in a bug for 20-40 hours in a row - the game will crash in any case and you won’t get the trophy, I was convinced of everything in a total of 90 hours.

Made a trophy on the bridge, drove there and back and 1.5 miles to the meter. No need to bother making these circles, it’s very difficult to crash into someone on the bridge, the road is wide. Put YouTube or something else in the background

In general, I did this trophy through a glitch, since I accidentally happened to have a turbo joystick.
Advice: if you do it through a glitch, take the “Walter Rocket” car (I attach a picture). I don't know why, but this car makes the miles go faster. When I picked up the car like in the video from the tip, I got about 10 mph. With "Walter Rocket" I clocked up almost 400 miles in 8 hours.

Having a “Turbojoystick”, you free yourself from all problems... We perform this glitch and connect your turbojoystick to the console so that it is constantly charged (this is if it is wireless) - because it will take a lot of time and the joystick may simply run out of charge... Actually, after performing the glitch, we program the “circle” button with the turbo button. and either we rewind it with tape, or we put something heavy on this button... All this so that when you are thrown into the menu for supposed inaction, the programmed circle button will throw you back into the game process. Button R2 (gas) - Rewind it with tape if you want, or not, because... anyway, you will run out of gas in about 20 minutes of real time, so there is no point in wrapping it with tape, despite the fact that the gas button it doesn’t click on the miles traveled, we still see miles supposedly traveled... The main thing here is that the console does not freeze, as is usually the case (it’s better to run it offline - there is less chance that it will become dull) - and you leave the console for a day in this state and the trophy won’t keep you waiting long... The advantages of this method are that you don’t have to refill the car with gas, and constantly monitor the game so that it doesn’t pause, while the trophy is being made you can do whatever you want: sleep, work, play PS4 , Vita, etc. : )

I did it on an xbox series x, just take a usb C cable, the main thing is of good quality, take out the batteries or acc from the gamepad, insert one end of the cable into the gamepad, the other into the xbox, hold down any button (let’s say a rubber trigger) turn off the TV or monitor to save electricity , and set it for the night and the day, don’t forget to save your progress every 4-5 hours and that’s it/

The PS4 version of the game crashes after long gaming sessions, and this has nothing to do with a bug in earning miles.

In my case, the game crashed both after 6 hours of play (this can be understood by the sharp drop in FPS), and after 8 hours of the console being idle in standby mode with the game turned on (literally 5 minutes after continuing, the game crashed for me blue screen). Both in the story and in the DLC.

Therefore, to maintain progress, it is critical to periodically restart the game. After the restart, I rode calmly for 6 hours. And without a restart, I caught a crash even after another 2-hour “flight” session.

PS: Patch 1.02, 2023, still working.

As of August 10, 2019, the glitch is working.
A few clarifications.
1. In 6 hours the car “travels” approximately 200 miles. Those. it took me 30 hours to get the trophy
2. I don’t know why, but on Walter rocket it’s really a little faster to receive.
3. If you press the keys correctly, it won’t eject. I held down R1/L1 and . Instead of can be clamped more on this later. I clamped it by placing cardboard under the buttons.
4. For me, when the car was in a bug and the city was visible behind it, the FPS sagged and it took twice as long to farm. Therefore, I held down the rear view and the FPS remained normal. So make sure that the city is not in sight.
5. After each entry into the menu, you must re-press the keys, otherwise you will crash.
6. Save by changing the settings, and at the end of the session, save through the house.

A very nerdy trophy. Just by playing the add-on you are unlikely to drive more than 350 miles, so take your favorite car and go to the track... On the bourgeois forums they write that the trophy is buggy, this is not true. Everything is fine with the trophy, just in the settings select the distance measurement not in kilometers, and in miles (imperial system).
