You will get this naturally playing the game. Money from corpses, kickbacks or from missions counts. It's cumulative and money lost when you die counts aswell. I had about ~450,000$ after beating game with all territories controlled with all rackets and with all side missions done. I recommend collecting all the money during any missions marked with green $ symbol as this will help a lot. You can increase income of your underbosses by doing their side missions, assigning them new rackets, wiretapping rackets (instead of killing bosses) and recruiting Informants (instead of killing them).

For Cassandra go upstairs and the money is on the coffee table. You can always 'upgrade' Vito so that Betty collects the kickbacks for you when you call her to take your 'wallet' cash to the safe too

As IX Bricktop XI said. Game will notify you when your full kickback is ready to take. They are always on tables where underbosses sits.

Edit 31 March 2017: This achievement had been glitched but players are now unlocking it. Since no official announcement has been made, I am leaving my earlier cautionary comment below.
Caution: There have been reports that this achievement is glitched as noted in the comments. Check the recent winners of this achievement to see if players are unlocking this achievement at a normal rate.
Unlike the Cash in Hand Achievement that requires you to physically possess $150K between Lincoln's wallet and bank, this achievement merely requires cumulative earnings of $500K. So, it is the sum of the money Lincoln has on hand and the money he has spent. Although the game itself does not show the cumulative earnings, the Mafia III game hub does. So, you can check the game hub to see how much more Lincoln needs to earn for the achievement to unlock.
The below video shows cash on hand significantly less than $500K yet the achievement unlocks because total earnings go over the $500K mark. The earnings can come from any source. In the video, an associate collects kickbacks on Lincoln's behalf to propel his earnings over the $500K threshold:

There have been reported issues of XBox One achievement issues with this game. I have seen complaints about both the Shh... Shh and Combat Specialist achievements from people who have clearly met the conditions to unlock the achievement.
Before doing anything else, I would recommend the simplest remedy--hard reset and power cycle. Do the hard reset by pressing the
button on the console for > 10 sec). Do the power cycle by next unplugging the power for > 10 seconds so it will reset. Plug in the power supply. Restart your XBox. This does not affect any games, saves, or other content on your X1. It may not fix this problem but you should do it as a first step. After you do it, play Mafia III and get a little cash. See if this will unlock the achievement.
If it does not, I recommend you contact Microsoft support. Go to http://support.xbox.com/en-US/contact-us#0:3:5 and go to step 4--"Choose a contact method." Then select "Chat with XBox support." Before you conclude your chat session, make sure you get a ticket number. This ensures your issue has been properly registered in the system.

My cash earned in the game hub shows over 600k and still no achievement. The tracking on some if the achievements in this game is apparently broken.

hey guys and gals, first solution so go easy on me
i've just unlocked it thanks to this video
i was just like many of you, millions & millions of $ and no achievement
the trick is to do this in ONE run (the game crashed many time before but no consequences for the achievement)
before starting a new game i did NOT delete my bloody savegame, not on my console, not on the cloud
when you are at the point to get the cash in the hangar just go back and forth to get 10k each time (hoping the game won't crash while you're doing, i think you're screwed if this happen), 50 times isn't that long
starting this i had 52k or something, after some travels i decided to keep all the money in my hands if ever the achievement is now glitched to this extent...
but bleep-blop at 430k+122k so keeping 500k in your hands isn't required, this is still true
i then decided to go for
The Hole in Your Pocket achievement in Mafia III: Definitive Edition worth 35 pointsSpend at least $500,000
and unlocked it as well

I would like to add that you don't need to follow the car you can go straight to the location and do this glitch just remember as per in video don't go and see they guy get 500k.
Also as a random side note my achievement did not pop up as usual I had do it to 545k in cash and 77k I wallet and was gutted it didn't pop, so I checked my remaining achievements and it was not there, updated ta via scan amd it had unlocked.

After having on screen money of over $500,000, it did not pop. After the first play through it did not pop. Along the second play through around $250,00 to $300,000 it did pop. Not sure why, but possibly give it time??? Hope this helps. Sorry you may have to play a second time through, but it did pop for me a couple of days ago (late march, 2017)

Glitch Warning: The 1.07 patch has fixed this trophy so please ensure you have the latest update installed, before attempting this.
You must earn a cumulative total of $500,000. This is easier to do when doing your “Flip” playthrough as flipping racket informants and bosses increases earn for your Underboss, which in return gives you more kickback returns. You don’t have to have all $500,000 at one time, and you should be spending them all on weapons and upgrades from the Mobile Arms Dealer van for Hole in Your Pocket 
.
