How to unlock the Combat Specialist achievement in Mafia III: Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide

This comes naturally in the normal progression of the game because it is often advantageous to perform stealth or other kinds of takedowns. However, you may want to grind it whether for instant gratification, to practice the technique, or to mitigate against a glitch. The achievement is unlocked when 300 takedowns of any type are performed. This achievement has a history of serious glitches.

Edit 6 November 2020: Many people are unlocking this achievement while, for others, it remains glitched. For people for whom this is glitched, I'd like to highlight the following and acknowledge the insight of the players mentioned:

Note the comment below by @Kheops Fenix on 31 Oct - the YouTube video referred to is by DK Soul:
i was almost in the same situation Dilly :/

but just unlocked it thanks to the place on this video
and the precious comment here Cheevos not unlocking

i did this in ONE run, didn't quit the game (it didn't crash)
i did NOT delete anything on my corrupted save game, not on my console, not on the cloud, i've just started a new game
if you know where to hide and whistle at the right time you can get 17 takedowns per turn at the place the video shows
i did NOT reload the checkpoint, if all goons are dead you can easily kill yourself just walk on the fire and let you burn
Here is the quote of the 2 Sep 2020 comment by @oO NiGhTbAsE Oo in Cheevos not unlocking that @Kheops Fenix refers to:
The issue is with the achievement trackers being broken, so whenever you quit the game (or if the game crashes), it resets the progress to zero on certain achievements.

The only way to earn those achievements is by not quiting, or hoping the game doesn't crash. So it will now likely take many play throughs to get 100%

You can grind out Combat Specialist using the infinite enemy spawns location near the start of the game, just YouTube it. Baby, You're A Rich Man and Hole In Your Pocket can also be ground out with the infinite money glitch found on Youtube. It's about half way through the game.

As for the informants, they should be fine, no glitches. The killing/flipping of the bosses are however still glitched and will need to be done in one single playthrough.
Edit 31 March 2017: This achievement had been glitched but players are now unlocking it. Since no official announcement has been made, I am leaving my earlier cautionary comment below. If you have met the conditions for the achievement and it has not unlocked, it is likely it will unlock in a new game. The below guide describes how to get the achievement early in the game even with the high count of takedowns required.

Edit 31 March continued: It appears that the counters in your game hub cannot be used to reliably inform you if you have met the conditions to unlock the achievement. The best advice I can give, at this time, is to take note in your game hub of what the counter is when you start a new game and assume that you have to perform 300 takedowns in addition to what that counter is.

Edit 7 April 2017: If you are having trouble with the achievement glitch, you might find this insight to be of value. Thanks to Aliosghof for bringing it to my attention and giving his permission to include it in this guide. Aliosghof said:
got the 300 TD achievement so the offline method worked like a charm. this is what you need to do:
1) go offline and delete your save and uninstall the game
2) re install the game and play (start a new game/save)
3) count and write down your take downs. there is no other way
4) After you reached the numbers (30,100 or etc) wait for game to save automatically for the last time and then quit
5) go online and the achievement(s) will pop
Note all of these need to be done in one session so don't quit or get online during the session.
Caution (may have been superseded by the 31 Mar edit above but am leaving this as a precaution): There have been reports that this achievement is glitched as noted in the comments. Check the recent winners of this achievement to see if players are unlocking this achievement at a normal rate.

Edit 6 May 2017: This achievement has been glitched in the past. Players, now, though, are routinely unlocking it as can be seen in the recent winners panel. However, some players still have issues as can be seen in the comments so I am leaving the above edits related to the glitch(es) intact but with a strike-thru.

Takedowns: Takedowns can be lethal or nonlethal. The game tab of the options menu allows you to set the type of takedown. If lethal is selected, Lincoln uses his combat knife. Not only are the takedowns lethal but his melee fighting in general is more damaging to opponents. There are three kinds of takedowns—normal, stealth, and brutal.

Normal Takedown: A normal takedown is melee combat that neutralizes the opponent other than the brutal or stealth takedowns described below. It is performed by pressing cn_B one or more times. If cn_B is held for more than a tap, a heavier melee attack is performed. Heavy attacks cannot be performed against capable and alert opponents unless they are first softened up with one or more light attacks executed by tapping the cn_B button. Sometimes, during melee combat, the cn_Y prompt will appear. If executed when prompted, a counter will be performed to effect the takedown.

Brutal Takedown: When a heavy melee attack is performed by holding cn_B, a white sector in the circle surrounding the cn_B prompt may appear. If the cn_B button is released while the indicator is at that white sector, a brutal takedown will be performed. Controller vibration (if enabled) and a ‘ping’ sound effect may help the player with the timing on when to release the cn_B button. If the B button is not released when the indicator is in the white sector then the ensuing takedown is a normal rather than a brutal takedown. Note, also, as mentioned above, that a heavy attack by holding cn_B may not be able to be performed against alert, capable enemies unless they are first softened up with one or more light attacks performed by tapping the B button.

Stealth Takedown: A stealth takedown is a lethal or non-lethal takedown performed when the target has not been alerted to Lincoln's presence. This can be the case where Lincoln sneaks up behind an enemy while crouching. It is, perhaps, most easily performed when Lincoln is in cover and whistles. A nearby enemy will come to investigate and can be caught unawares with the stealth takedown. The takedown is performed by holding cn_B. Often, but not always, the cn_B symbol will appear on the enemy signifying the takedown can be performed. However, this indicator is not perfectly reliable and so practicing in a controlled environment may be of benefit to perfect the timing.

Grinding the Achievement:

The achievement can be grinded in many places should players want to unlock the achievement without waiting for it to pop in normal game play. The below video shows a controlled, set-piece type environment where stealth takedowns can be practiced. It is early in the game. Cassandra has become Lincoln's ally and the Way of Flesh mission is underway. It is during the Prostitution Racket sub-mission. At that point in the game, members of the Dixie Mafia have started loitering in pairs at certain locations.

Note: If you were affected by the achievement glitch and did not unlock the achievement even though you satisfied the conditions, you might want to start a new game and grind the takedowns quickly. In this event, take note of the game hub takedown counter before you start the new game. Assume that you will have to add 300 takedowns in the new game for the achievement to unlock.

The grinding location has Lincoln do takedowns at a corner on two of the loitering Dixie Mafia members. Then he goes into the First Baptist Church complex and performs two to three more takedowns. When Lincoln returns to the street corner where he started, the loitering Dixie Mafia duo will have respawned. So, Lincoln can go back and forth doing five or more takedowns between the street corner and the house or garage in the First Baptist Church complex.

The First Baptist Church complex plays a part in the Smack sub-mission. So, the location becomes unavailable partway through the Smack sub-mission. Even though it becomes unavailable early on, it is still a good location. There is a Tac vest and a First Aid box in the house or garage near the Church. So, Lincoln can take care of his health. Even though the takedowns are stealth takedowns other enemies are alerted and will attack Lincoln. So, should Lincoln take damage, he can reconstitute his health and protection. The Tac Vest, if used, respawns when Lincoln goes as far as the street corner with the Dixie Mafia pair.

Brutal and Stealth takedowns may be practiced while grinding for this achievement. Fifty brutal takedowns and 100 stealth takedowns will result in these respective achievements:

Mafia III: Definitive EditionClosed CasketThe Closed Casket achievement in Mafia III: Definitive Edition worth 35 pointsPerform 50 Brutal Takedowns

Mafia III: Definitive EditionShh, shhThe Shh, shh achievement in Mafia III: Definitive Edition worth 22 pointsPerform 100 Stealth Takedowns on enemies

If three brutal takedowns are executed in quick succession, the following achievement will be unlocked:

Mafia III: Definitive EditionSending A MessageThe Sending A Message achievement in Mafia III: Definitive Edition worth 35 pointsChain together 3 or more Brutal Takedowns

I'm sorry to hear that you're unable to unlock the achievement in Mafia III, even after meeting the requirements. Thank you for alerting us about the issue you are experiencing. Because of the work of diligent players like you, we've been able to collect enough information about this issue to notify the development team, and they are currently working toward a solution. Unfortunately, we do not have visibility on their progress here in customer support, and so we don't have a timeline for a fix to be implemented. That said, please follow us on Twitter (@MafiaGame), as this is where new info as well as upcoming patches will be announced.

Thank you for your comprehension and your patience. If you have any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask!

If I understand you correctly, when you go to the game hub, it says you have 946 takedowns. If this is the case, you have satisfied the conditions to unlock the achievement. In fact, when I look at the Takedown leaderboard, it tells me that you have 941 takedowns--and have undeniably met the conditions to unlock the achievement. Unfortunately, the X1 has had a number of issues where achievement unlocking is glitched. Take a look at the achievement app. Is the achievement still locked or does it say, "Done! Unlocking..."?

If it says, "Done! Unlocking..." but the achievement has not unlocked, please note the box on the top right of the achievement page just underneath the Unlock Percentages block. It says, "Have you met the achievement requirements and it hasn't unlocked? Is it stuck at 100% or saying "Done! Unlocking"? If so please click here to visit the achievement page on Xbox.com and it should resolve the issue."

Go to the achievement page for Combat Specialist. Make sure it is the achievement page and not just the solution comment page. Click on the link on the word here in the box I discussed in the preceding paragraph.

If this does not resolve the problem, there are some other remedies we can explore.

@UCS Shepard, it sounds to me that this is a more serious problem than the "Done! Unlocking." There are problems that randomly affect certain users when their local and global data get out of synch. Sometimes a hard reset or power cycle will fix the problem. Sometimes, a factory reset will fix it.

Make sure you do a power cycle. First, turn off the power by holding the XBox button ten seconds, then, disconnect the power supply. Wait at least ten seconds to allow the power supply's chip to reset. Plug in the power supply and restart the XBox.

I think it's always a good policy to do a hard reset and power cycle every so often--maybe once a month. Do the factory reset and power cycle and do a few takedowns in your game. It may be best to do it with the achievement app snapped to the game as I have done in the video solution for this achievement.

If this does not solve the problem, the next step would be to do a factory reset. There's more than one kind. Go here and select the option to reset but keep your games and apps. Make sure you select the option Reset and keep my games & apps otherwise you would have to reinstall all your stuff:

https://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-one/console/reset-consol...

Once you have done that, play the game and do some takedowns. As soon as you start up again, your profile in the cloud will synch with your XBox and create a fresh profile on your console. Again, I recommend playing with the achievement app snapped to your game screen.

All of the above remedies, though inconvenient, are not that difficult to do. If they do not work, you will most likely have to replay the game. I would recommend that you contact XBox support so that you would get the best advice. If this had happened to me and the remedies described above do not work, this is what I would do:

1. Remove profile
2. Clear persistent Storage
3. Disconnect Wireless & go offline
4. Clear cache
5. Go online and sign in but do not play any games
6. Disconnect wireless again & go offline
7. Play Mafia III offline until you get the 300 takedowns in the new game & unlock the achievement. The method in the solution video allows you to do it very early in the game.
8. Once you have unlocked the achievement offline go back online and allow local and global profiles to synch.

In the three years that I have been playing the X1, I have experienced a wide variety of achievement glitches. Some have been more serious than others. I make it a point to contact Microsoft support. To date, I have been able to eventually fix each problem although, in some cases, I have had to replay in order to get the achievement. The advice I give above is based on my experience. I am no expert, though, and recommend you contact XBox Support.

I think it's clear, now, that the problem is a game problem and not a console problem. The 24 Jan update has really obstructed the ability to unlock this achievement and about five others. Some people continue to unlock the achievement by starting a new playthrough and getting to the 300 count all in one sitting. One problem, though, with that is that Mafia III has always had a tendency to freeze up and cause you to restart the game at the most recent save. So, this makes it less likely to get the stats you need in one sitting. You have to cross your fingers and hope the game does not freeze up.

If you do want to try it, at least this solution is very early on in the game. It is one of the earliest points where you can grind without reverting to checkpoint saves. (For example, you could do it during the "Never Going to be Over" mission where you take out Baka but you'd have to continually reload a checkpoint save. If you do it at the beginning of the "Way of Flesh" mission described in the solution, you can cycle between the First Baptist Church complex and the street corner without interruption. The enemies you take out will respawn once you leave each area and go to the other.

I certainly feel your frustration. Achievements are a very important part of my gaming experience. It is very disappointing when a technical problem prevents you from unlocking the achievements that you have worked hard to earn.

AFAIK, there are over half a dozen achievements that are glitched. I think the problem is more severe than something that can be fixed with a minor tweak. So, I recommend keeping tabs on the News section of the official Mafia III site:

https://mafiagame.com/en/news/

You'll note that the next major update is not currently scheduled until March. People started complaining about achievement problems following updates in Nov, Dec, & Jan. The patch notes for the Dec & Jan updates are here:

https://mafiagame.com/en/news/view/en-races-car-customizatio...

The Nov patch notes are here:

https://mafiagame.com/en/news/view/update-mafia-3-free-outfi...

Note that you can get to those sections from the main news section above. Note, also, that the Jan patch notes were not provided in their own news item but by modifying the previous Dec news item. So, in addition to being on the lookout for new news items, you should also check the two previous patch note items.

I'm getting long-winded. I have another recommended tip that I'll put in its own comment.

That certainly can't hurt. As you see in the video, I was doing all my takedowns non-lethally. I had just come off Deus Ex: Mankind Divided (fabulous game) when I started Mafia III: Definitive Edition so I had a stealth, non-lethal mindset drummed into me from the earlier game.

If you really want to get the achievements, there is a sure-fire way to get the problematic ones providing you have a physical disk. I had an achievement glitch with Dishonored 2 following the second update. It was by no means as severe as the Mafia III problem; however, this is the approach I used to get around the problem created by the update.

I uninstalled my saves and the game & then went offline and installed the game from the physical disk. I played offline. The problematic achievements popped without issue because the problem was created by the updates which I never installed in the offline game. After getting the problematic achievement offline, I went back online so they synched with my profile.

If you have a second X1, or can borrow a friend's, you don't even have to delete your main game and its associated saves. You can simply go offline on the second machine, install the game, play it, and get the achievements.

My recommendation is to submit a support request at http://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. If you don't have an account, take a minute to create one. Takedowns are tracked by the game hub. I can see on your game page that you have the 460 takedowns you say you have. So, the fact that you have met the conditions to unlock the achievement is indisputable. Because the X1, as a console, has had a variety of achievement glitches; earlier, I had suggested console trouble shooting and contacting Microsoft support. Now, I am beginning to think it might be a game related glitch. At any rate, it will not hurt to cover all bases and contact both Microsoft and 2K support.

I am in the same dish, I have have none of them takedown achievements unlocking although I have met the requirements. Anyways, I voted thumbs up for the detailed guide and for the long and detailed help the OP has provided in the comments.
Anyways, I'm very disappointed about this game (achievements) being broken. Also the achievements related to flipping racket bosses and the $500k seem to be broken since last update (January '17). And 2K hopes to sell me the DLC in March/May/July? Sure, if they fix this first.

according to the game hub, ive got 521 takedowns, have earned $552,854, gave 3 districts to each underboss, did their loyalty mission and did not kill all possible racketbosses yet none of the corresponding achievements have unlocked. i will NOT be doing a second playthrough if they dont patch this to allow achievements to retroactively unlock. This game takes long enough as it is, I will not subject myself to having to play a possible third or fourth playthrough because the developer cant get things right. I love the story but between achievements not unlocking, several save file corruptions Ive had, and constant crashes to the dashboard, this game is damn near unplayable

@RiseofMrBlonde2, I certainly understand your frustration especially since achievements are a major factor in my gaming experience. The developer is aware of the issue and acknowledges there is a problem. I am editing the solution to state that there is a reported problem regarding this achievement and to check the Recent Winners section of the achievement to see if players are unlocking it. As of this writing, the last time this achievement unlocked was 7 Feb which is seriously abnormal for a game played by almost 29K people.

Some people have unlocked the glitched achievements by starting a new playthrough and meeting the conditions to unlock them all in one sitting. This solution gives you the ability to grind the takedowns out very early in the game without having to reload checkpoints. However, the game has always had the tendency to freeze. So, there is a risk that your one sitting will be interrupted.

I know of seven achievements with problems:

This one: Combat Specialist
Shh, Shh
The New Boss for Flipping 16 racket bosses
Baby you're a rich man (Earn 500 k)
Family
Hole in your pocket for Spending 500 k
Flambe

The developer, 2K, knows about the problem. I recommend submitting a support request at http://support.2k.com/hc/en-us/requests/new. If you don't have an account, take a minute to create one. It is clear from the game hub that you have earned the achievement. I can see that you have 478 takedowns so you should have unlocked the achievement. So, you have done everything right but there is a problem with the game.

I look at the recent winners section of the achievement. For example, the last person to unlock Combat Specialist did so on 5 Feb. The one just before that was 29 Jan. This tells me there is a very serious problem. Over 28K people have this game. This is an achievement that should unlock through normal game play although you can grind it as I have shown in this guide. So, you would expect several people to unlock this achievement each day. This is not happening and shows there is a serious problem.

This is what @Aliosghof posted on Cheevos not unlocking

FYI, "Baby, You're a Rich Man" has been fixed. I deleted my save, updated the game (5.11G update), synced my save game from cloud, loaded the game and robbed 27 droller form nearest store (had 510K before) and achievement popped. I think the rest of the broken achievement should be ok by now.
This approach may work for the other glitched achievements. If you already have installed the 5.11 GB update, I would imagine you could get the same results by deleting your save and then uninstalling and reinstalling the game. If anybody tries this please update us on the results whether positive or negative.

@RiseofMrBlonde2, the game hub shows you with 529 takedowns. So, you clearly have met the conditions to unlock this achievement and have been hit by the same glitch that has affected other people. With 529 takedowns, you most likely also have the 100 needed for the Shh, shh achievement as well.

exactly. i stopped playing the game right before the final mission when i realized so many things were bugged for me. thats all i could do last night after the update and got all the money ones. but all takedowns, getting loyalty from underbosses, and keeping all the bad guys alive (yes im positive i didnt accidentally kill any that had a choice) never unlocked for me. i literally have no choice but to start a fresh game and see. if I want to go for everything I still have to do 2 full playthroughs though which is frustrating

The solution now reflects the best information I have on the topic and includes insight from recent winners.

Having way over 2500 takedown kills and 4 complete playthroughs (fresh one in every case) the achievement is still locked. Got the New boss achievement yesterday which means something has been done on 2K's side but this takedown one is totally bugged. I had a stupid idea btw, can happen that I need to switch the option for takedowns from lethal to non-lethal and try it that way??

thanks for the tip but I attempted this method already...:( did a factory reset on my console to remove all the possible failed datas after uninstalling the game and deleting the save files, then installed offline w/o any updates, started a playthrough for the takedowns and boss-flipping, none of them unlocked even offline...:( All in all, these glitched achievements are in the hand of fate, if u r lucky u can unlock them, if not, u r doomed till 2K does something seriously.

That's too bad. I think that's because there's more than one issue at play, here. The real problem occurred after the Jan update. However, I already had seen complaints following the previous update. If the achievements don't unlock with the base game without any updates, it suggests there was something fundamentally wrong with the base game that hit people at random. Do you have access to a second XBox? I think I've been hit with more than my share of achievement glitches--most of them console rather than game related. I've often found that playing on a different console resolves the problem especially if the glitch hits people at random.

There's more on the offline method in this thread--especially in SATYATEX's posts: Flip all boss and Loyalty

He makes the point that, once you have met the conditions offline to unlock the glitched achievement(s), to:
let the game save, quit to the dashboard and go online without loading up the game, the achievements will unlock right there. After that delete this local save used for the kills and recover yr actual save from the cloud.
This ensures that, when you resume online, you can restore the save file in your main game.

The 300 TD and 50 Brutal TD have been glitched for me through 2 complete plays through as well as Wrecker. I am going to try the offline method to see if it will unlock these 2 TD achievements as well as the Wrecker. I was having similar issue with the "Flambe" achievements as it was not unlocking for me and I did finally get it by deleting my game install and game save and reinstalling the game off line and playing off line

4/15/17 - Off Line Method did not work for me for these: Wrecker, 300 TD and 50 Brutal TD are still glitched for me - Also several others Family, New Boss

4/16/17 - Tried Off line again and did not work for me - I give up - over 3000 TD and no achievement -

Still haven't managed to get this despite getting 1000+ takedowns after the game was updated fixing the achievements, I got every other achievement just fine and this is the only one I'm missing for this game. I see people getting this all the time so I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I even tried 300 on a single playthrough and nothing. I'm so done with but with this game after playing through it 5 times now, and just want this to unlock.

@GYM PL; Are you playing the physical version or the digital version? If you are playing the physical version, you can uninstall the game, go offline, install the game without updates and play. This achievement that was glitched because of the update will then unlock. When you go back online, it will be credited to your profile.

Finally unlocked the last three that had glitched for me: Combat Specialist - Ssh, Ssh and Closed Casket. I had done 5+ playthroughs and thought i'd just have to accept defeat with those achievements, i tried the offline method mentioned above and it didn't work for me so one last throw of the dice was the try the factory reset (also mentioned above) and that combined with the offline method is what finally worked for me! Just wanted to thank Allgorhythm for the help with this, much appreciated!

That's great news and thanks for the kind words. Probably, the reason the combination of the factory reset and offline method worked is that there was probably some corruption in the console's files that was introduced with one of the updates. Simply deleting the game and its saves did not remove whatever corrupt files were interfering with the achievements. My guess is that had you played the offline method on a second console where the game had never previously been installed and you did an offline install that you also would have been able to unlock the achievements.

Hey everyone, I know it's been a while since the last comment was posted. I have had these takedown achievements glitched for a really long time and none of the updates helped me. So today I tried the offline method from Allgorhythm and went for the 50 brutal takedowns. I counted and when I hit 50 I got online and the achievement popped after 5 min on the dashboard. So now I'm gonna try to get the rest. A big thanks to Allgorhythm for the help.

Finally unlocked this last night. Completely deleted and reinstalled the whole game (digital copy) and dlc. Scrubbed all saves and reserved data from the console and the cloud. Went offline and played upto doing the first 2 missions for The Voice character. Then proceeded to do 340+ takedowns in the abandoned church area just to be sure. I did this in one sitting and took a couple of hours once I figured out the speediest route. Then went back online. Took a while to unlock but I kept checking the game hub for Mafia 3 and once it synced the data it popped to much relief. According to game hub I now stand at 2200+ takedowns so was relieved to get this 👍

i was almost in the same situation Dilly :/

but just unlocked it thanks to the place on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAOUGDo8oBI and the precious comment here Cheevos not unlocking

i did this in ONE run, didn't quit the game (it didn't crash)
i did NOT delete anything on my corrupted save game, not on my console, not on the cloud, i've just started a new game
if you know where to hide and whistle at the right time you can get 17 takedowns per turn at the place the video shows
i did NOT reload the checkpoint, if all goons are dead you can easily kill yourself just walk on the fire and let you burn

good luck

I have just unlocked this. Gamehub counter said 560 melee takedowns. It was my first time playing. Still broken, hope your game doesn't crash and use insta power on. I unlocked this on my first save, just kept doing takedowns, because I got the other two achievements the day before (when the counter was about 300 already) and game has not crashed yet.

I just got this, Shh, Shh and Closed Casket by using Quick Resume on a Series console. I was already far into my first play through and decided to try this method out. After about an hour or two of grinding it finally popped for me. Hope this helps.

@Hyperionston; Congrats on your achievement. I don’t know which is more impressive—overcoming this glitch or unlocking Recruited to 5th SFG this early in the game. Before the Sign of the Times DLC came out, from a skills standpoint, it was the most challenging achievement in the game. Nowadays, most people use the slo-mo feature from the DLC to pop it.

The good news is if the counter is working, you’re much more likely to escape the other glitches. It may not be precise but, as long as it is advancing, you’re in decent shape. Good luck.

@Allgorhythm thank you for the kind words.

For the achievement 5th SFG I watched a video where a guy marked a spot where there was a group of cops near the voice early in the game and he parked a vehicle to block the back alleyway to stop you getting flanked and parked a vehicle down the other alleyway which forces the cops to come down in single file once you get their attention.

I've seen some recent activity in some of the other achievements that have been reported as problematic such as:
Mafia III: Definitive EditionShh, shhThe Shh, shh achievement in Mafia III: Definitive Edition worth 22 pointsPerform 100 Stealth Takedowns on enemies

and:
Mafia III: Definitive EditionHole in Your PocketThe Hole in Your Pocket achievement in Mafia III: Definitive Edition worth 35 pointsSpend at least $500,000

However, I have not heard anything official from 2K yet.

Thanks for the PM Allgorhthm. I've got over 900 takedowns and I just can't be bothered starting another game. Tried about another 50 after the patch and none of the takedown cheevos unlock, so I won't be buying their DLC and have moved on to another game :D

Too bad. I suggested to 2K that they roll back the updates since they seemed to be responsible for the achievement glitches. They did not seem inclined to do it--I guess because they had put too much effort into the updates. The problem was on all platforms--in the 2K forums there were complaints about PC, PS4, & X1 achievements or trophies not unlocking. So, this was a game problem and not the X1 achievement glitch.

No. I actually tested this. I started a game on a test account. After getting a hundred takedowns or so, I started a new game. The achievement unlocked after 300 takedowns in the new playthrough.
It looks like you prefer using a gun to doing takedowns. Most people get 300 takedowns during the natural course of play. Since you prefer firearms, if you're just starting your new playthrough, I'd recommend you do a little grinding as discussed in the guide and shown in the video. Note that, in order to be able to grind it, you can only do so before you complete the Smack submission of the Way of All Flesh story mission. The Smack mission gives you control of the First Baptist Church so, of course, there are no enemies to takedown there any more.
The same technique can be used elsewhere in the game. Some are better than others. Ideally, you want a hideout that is easily accessible and where you can take down half a dozen people in quick succession, leave, go a short distance to allow the enemies to respawn--rinse and repeat.

Do you have access to another X1 console? There is the possibility you have corrupted files (OS, game, save, etc.) on your console. No fault of yours, of course. However, playing the game on a second console would avoid any issues you might have on your console. This is a lot easier than doing a factory reset especially since we don't know the root cause of the problem and you may or may not have corrupted files on your console.

@Kheops Fenix - Thanks for this. I think it's becoming more and more evident that game crashes make these achievements more likely to glitch--unfortunate in a game that's prone to crash. So, location becomes very important--the one you refer to in your comment is a great one.

Horrible achievement but I didn't start a new game or that when my counter reached 300 and no achievement pop.

I took note of my tally before I started continuing using my current save just farming a spot and it popped 2 take down's before the 300 requirement in one sitting.

I feel bad for any player that goes through this and doesn't get the unlock.

@Hyperionston; I’ve seen the video or one like it. The first time I did it—I did it several times playing XBox One, PC, & PS4 versions of the game (facepalm)—I just threw a Screaming Zemi distraction doll into a police station & went to town on the cops when they grouped around the doll to investigate it.

I play a lot of stealth games where headshots help avoid detection so I, personally, was not put off by the achievement. But quite a lot of people complained about the difficulty. So much so that I even went out of my way to develop an alternative solution: getting cornered by 3 or more vehicles chasing you & letting the in-vehicle targeting system automatically target the heads.

Once the Sign of the TimesDLC was released 5th FSG became much easier especially since all DLCs are included in the Definitive Edition. As you play through the DLC story, you get a pop-up tutorial notifying you that pressing Y while targeting sends you into slow motion. Once you get this notification, slow motion is activated for the entire game. All you have to do is find a grouping of enemies (including those used by the non-slow motion guides), aim, press Y, & shoot at least 5 at your leisure.

Glad to see you did it the old challenging way without slo-mo. smile

This achievement is quite easy but takes a while.

There are two types of takedowns Stealth and Brutal. You don't need to get 300 stealth takedowns for example. Any combination of both takedowns will suffice. Below is an explanation of how to do these different types of takedowns.

Stealth Takedowns
A good way of getting kills is to stay in cover and use your whistle ability by holding cn_left Once you've whistled an enemy will go to investigate the noise. When the enemy is close enough a cn_B icon will appear on the enemy. This indicates that you're close enough to get a stealth takedown.

A god tip to add will be to use the cn_back button when entering areas with enemies. This will tell you where the enemies are, this is useful for when inside buildings.

Brutal Takedowns
You are required to be detected by the enemy. To perform a Brutal Takedown you have to hold the cn_B button. When you're holding the cn_B button a circle will appear around it. This circle is a timer which will let you do a Brutal Takedown.

You have to keep holding cn_B and you'll want to wait for an audio queue of a coin being flipped. When you hear that noise, let go of cn_B and watch the Brutal Takedown animation.

Here is an example of a Brutal Takedown.

After 1650 kills over several playthroughs I still could not get this to pop, using this method it finally popped today.

Here is what i did.

I deleted the game and the 2 save files.
I went offline with the xb1 and re-installed Mafia III
I started a new game cancelling any sync beforehand.
I played the game as normal till after i spoke with "Voice"
Instead of going to the club I went to the infinite re-spawn of enemies beside the abandoned church, there are 2 guys on a corner and 8/9 guys in the church area. ( see the grind point in the above solutions )
I kept a note of my kills and once i got above 300 I went back online.
The game went back to the loading screen but the achievement popped.

Hopefully this solution will help people with the takedown achievements not popping when they should.

As of September 10,2017. This method does NOT work. Did not get the 300 kills nor did I get the 100 stealth kills. Started a 5th game to try this method, and no achievement.
