How to unlock the Danger Close achievement in Mafia III: Definitive Edition - Definitive Guide
Unfortunately, like other achievements in this game, this achievement has a chance of glitching on you as it did for me (I've killed 30+ cops, & 30+ regular enemies with mines). The only option is to wait and see if they fix it in a future update.
It's definitely a huge headache completely restarting for a single achievement but honestly a more probable fix than waiting on 2K to get around to it eventually. Hope this helps everyone that currently has it bugged/glitched
I finally got it to unlock after being glitched with more than 1000 kills, trying several different methods/playthroughs, and several tickets to 2K support that were of no help
Had to completely delete the game and all saved data and re-install w/ the 5+ gig update and DLC, though you must play offline after downloading the update. If you need to be online for a moment just to assure you have the slo-mo ability in your vehicle at the very start of the game that's fine, but you must go offline immediately after and keep your own tally. I got 50 or 60 (all gangsters too, no cops) just to make 100% sure I had enough before re-connecting to live. Immediately upon connecting it booted me to dashboard but don't worry, as upon signing back in you should receive the notification your console save is now different from the cloud save 2K has for you. Make sure to use your console save if this option appears and upon loading the game, the achievement should immediately pop

* I did delete my main game, my local save, and the reserve space that the game has. I did NOT delete the downloaded DLC.
* After re-downloading the main game from the disk, I immediately turned off the internet connection and started a brand new game. You should be asked all of the introduction questions to set up your TV, etc. If you do not get this, you have not deleted all of your saves, or are still on the internet.
*I began playing from the beginning and played all the way until the first sit down. This is when I noticed that I still did NOT have access to proximity mines. After some searching, I found on https://mafiagame.fandom.com/wiki/Proximity_Mine that proximity Mines were added with update 1.070.0. Therefore, you must download the update or you will never get them. At this point I also did not have any DLC showing as active.
*Next, I logged off my account, connected to the internet and loaded Mafia III without being signed in. This prompted the update. Once the update was complete, I turned the internet back off and logged back in to my account.
*As soon as I loaded back up Mafia III, I now had access to the DLC missions and started these. I would guess that I had nearly 30 kills before going to the warehouse in where all of the creepy Mardi Gras floats are stored. At one point you drop through the floor and end up outside a door that when you open it, there are around 4 people performing a ritual. I used this opportunity to toss a proximity mine, kill them all, and re-load the checkpoint to do it again 10 times to ensure that I was above the 30 kills.
* I then re-connected to the internet while in-game. I continued with the mission for a few minutes and even died once while trying to escape the warehouse. After restarting the escape sequence and dropping down the ladder after the lights turned on, the achievement popped! This was up to 5 minutes after I re-connected to the internet and after 1 death as well as a few kills. My plan was to continue through the mission and try to use the Opera House to get a ton of kills and see if this would work with re-starting checkpoints, however I didn't need it.
*I highly recommend that you download the update without being signed in to your account from the beginning as I feel that I may have played many unneeded hours during this 3rd playthrough. DO NOT sign in to your account while connected to the internet until after you have completed at least 30+ proximity mine kills. I hope this helps!
Firstly, mine was glitched. Or, I thought it was. I got it to pop, if this doesn't work for you, my apologies, it just what worked for me. The reason I'm posting this, is some people are saying it is either gonna work for you or it won't. Well it didn't work for me, yet in the end I got it, so that's not the case.
After getting over a hundred kills I decided it was glitched. I then wondered why it would work for some, so I started making assumptions on how the coders intended it.
Firstly, the two most popular methods seemed to be either:
A) dropping mines and blowing up chasing police/enemies
B) farming at the police station in French ward
So I made two basic assumptions as to why these aren't counting.
A) kills in a car do not count as enemies. I'm guessing the game notices the cars destruction, and counts it as a vehicle kill rather than enemies killed.
B) the police are not enemies. They are friendly (blue colour) until aggravated. If you blow them up when they aren't hostile, they aren't registered as enemies.
my steps :
I don't know if it's all required. It's just what I did.
I deleted my game and redownloaded it. I deleted my saved data. (This resets the games cache - it helped with a glitch on forza so I did it here).
Replayed the game til I had access to the mines.
I didn't kill a single person, except red hostile enemies on side missions or red hostile enemies clustered around the city. I killed no police. I killed no one in cars. All 30 of my kills were in New Bordeaux, not the Parish.
I kept a tally on how many I had, and the achievement popped bang on 30.
If this doesn't work, then maybe it's just glitched. But it worked for me after 100+ kills with no luck.
Hopefully it helps. If it does, please vote positive. If it doesn't, don't vote negative or I'll just remove it. I'm just trying to help.
Near the end of the DLC story, you'll be in a mission called All For the Blessed and you have to infiltrate an opera house. Right after getting inside and listening to the crazy people for a bit, the game unlocks your RB action and you can easily toss mines into a crowd for a cool 15 to 20 kills all at the same time.
Simply reload the checkpoint if you need to do it again.
ALSO you can use the same method with the call sniper achievement.
There seems to be a misconception that cops count for this achievement (and others I'll list below), but from my experience after killing 100+ cops using mines and sniper strikes for hours they don't. After experimenting a bit I've found a great spot to farm enemies at the end of the game.
First of all, you're gonna want to have a couple screaming zemi (the regular one - note that both will work just fine but the explosive one might screw you up a couple of attemps if you forget to detonate it). Head to the Vito racket mission titled "sounds simple enough" south-east of the map. Wait for the guy near the pick-up to walk away and take cover against it. Throw a screaming zemi towards the enemies near a fire. The screaming zemi should alert 5 hostiles, so just wait until they gather up then throw your mine at their feet. You should be able to kill 4, if not all 5 with a single mine. Then, hop in your car and head north until the the enemies respawn. (Now if you have the explosive zemi, hit down on the d-pad to detonate it before you make the enemies respawn or you'll have to make another trip.) Rinse & repeat.
Works great for all other cumulative kills-related DLC achievements such as:
This works especially well for 'Spotter' since the bounty hunter guy is relatively close, so you can get free sniper strikes.
Method used.
Downloaded game (disc)
Downloaded 13.5gb update.
Downloaded faster baby expansion.
Turned xbox to offline via internet settings 'go offline' not profile settings.
Started game.
Played to Vito recruitment mission.
Called supply van and stocked up on mines and screamers.
Threw a screamer to lure random guard and two talking guards on the left to meet. Threw mine at one of the guards to take all three out. Then took as many others out as I could eith the three remaining mines earning at minimum 6 kills. Then ran back from the complex and purchased as many mines as I could then returning to clean up. When I was out of mines and money I paused and went to load last checkpoint which returns you outside of the complex allowing me to start again.
I did this while keeping mental count getting to 40 for good measure.
Pushed home on controller and went to settings, reconnected to internet and waited. After 30 seconds as I returned to achievement it popped for 100%.
Hope this helps any others still holding out hope
using the zemi's in combination with the mines worked a treat and i used them on 30 gangsters and 30 cops just in case
The following solution worked for me:
Start - GAME - DLC go to Store and check that everything is marked as "Owned".
Oddly enough, I didn't have the game itself marked as “Owned”.
Unlike the rest of the DLC trophies, you can actually start working on this one from the very beginning of the main game! Once you have access to the Arms Dealer (getting your first district assigned to Cassandra), you can buy these from him for $450 each. Now you just need to get 30 kills on enemies to get this trophy and refill the ammo as needed. To use them, you equip them by holding and using to cycle until you highlight them. You throw them with and when an enemy (or you) step near it, it detonates.
Note that the game does not seem to register people as "enemies" unless they are/were in combat with you so you will need to agitate them first, before getting them killed by the mines. I find a good way to do this is to plant a mine in a doorway near your location, then aim your gun at them to make them hostile. Run away and they will follow you straight into the mine. Once you have gotten your 30th kill, the trophy will pop!
ok so to this there are a 3 things to keep in mind:
1- you have to do this in one sitting and not close the game as each time that game gets closed stats for some stuff gets reset (credit to shamelesscreature on Reddit for pointing this out about the Steam version of the game which gave me the idea to try it on Xbox and its true there too); also i kept reloading the last checkpoint to save ammo and that held me back in unlocking the achievement so i don't recommend it
2- normal enemies are preferred for this as the game counts it for them either way but if you're going to do it with cops keep in mind that they must be in active engagement with you for it to count, meaning they must be shooting at you (i'm not 100% sure if it will also work if they're searching for you so i suggest to not take any chances)
3- use the voodoo doll to gather a number of enemies in one spot and then throw the mine directly at one of them and it'll explode
if you're on Xbox you can also check the game's Stats section from its Game Hub under the Achievement tab or from the Xbox's Home Menu each time to make sure that kills were registered
*this method works across all platforms so whether you're on Xbox, PlayStation or Steam/PC this should work without any problems; it is very likely for this method to also work for Spotter if you're having problems with that one too like i did [but for me it didn't come to this method, i got lucky with that one and it randomly got popped for me] but keep in mind that due to the expensive price of each of them its gonna cost A LOT (you can also restock for free with the way Jordan Crawfish said if you don't mind driving back and forth a ton) so also for that one try to gather enemies in one spot with the voodoo doll so you can get as much kills with one call as possible just like in this method*
