How to unlock the Learning the Ropes achievement in Major League Baseball 2K10 - Definitive Guide

ok I have seen some good guides above but still failed to get the Contact and Power and Control and Velocity. I found the below methods are descriptive and can help more.

Control and Velocity: First thing you will do is modify Mariano Rivera. You will max out everything including his movement and all his stats. You will eliminate any additional pitches other then the first 2 fastballs so you will have a 4 seam and a 2 seamer which both will be maxed out, After you save this go into the drills. Once it loads up, before you through any pitches, go into your options menu and you will find to contoller option windows. In the top option change it classic controls for pitching. This will mean you will have to push a button instead of doing a shady movement on the stick. You are not done. Then go to the bottom option and select Pinpoint control instead of breakpoint. This means that whereever you select your pitch it will always end up where you wanted it, So whether it is a knuckleball or fastball or a 12-6 curve, you can select the exact location of where it will land. Now you are probably wondering why we modified the pitches, For some reason the fastball didnt work as it was supposed to for me, so I would hold the button ( A button) for the pitch and max it out but never got credit, so after aiming at the box and simply tapping the button. My fastball always ended up 2 squares below the box but it always registered. So after going 3 for 3 by just tapping the fastball, on the 2-seamer I had to hold the button for a max pitch and it nailed the boxes all 3 times. Getting use to the timing may be challenging but after 4-6 tries if not sooner you should get it. If you need more information or assistance, contact me and I can walk you through it verbally.

Plate Battle: For this one I took Joe Mauer, following the guides above but I made a slight modification. I changed the hitting to classic controls and it made it a lot easier to fight off pitches. If you want to use total controls, be sure to just flick to the right on your thumb stick which will be a "defensive swing". Remember foul balls are points to.

Contact and Power: You can use any hitter once you modify their stats. i went with Joe Mauer and for the first few I just used classic controls. made it very easy to hit to center, after I had 4 go to center, then I started on my opposite field hits, i found them the trickiest by holding up and to the left with Mauer helped here. After 3 of those I only needed to pull 3 and I held up and to the right. Most of these were pop-ups but they all count.

In the fielding drills, Pick any team or player you want, in the outfield I chose Randy Winn, first base I went with Pujols and the catcher was Yadier Molina. Then I went into the Roster Management and decreased all running attributes for every player on the roster, including the picthers. Nailing people stealing bases, going for extra bases or turning double plays is a breeze with this method. Just be sure to move up your 3 guys fielding stats. Winn's arm hasn't looked this good since High School.

Baserunning: I went with Brett Gardner and just timed Rivera's windup. You can modify Gardner's speed if you wish but I didnt need to. I always use up on the left directional pad when sliding as well. Seems to work for me.

last but not least the Composure and Stamina. Just modify any pitcher to have incredible stats and knuckle balls, curve balls and other shady pitches and shave corners. use classic controls to make picking your spots easier and also have pinpoint control selected. If you struggle, decrease all hitting stats on everyone on the team you select and the combination of your beastly pitches and their garbage stats will ensure this will be done quickly.

If there is anything that you would like clarification on, do not hesitate to contact me on here or over xbl. You will see the classic controls and the pinpoint pitching will make all of these incredibly easy

This is a really good guide, and helped me a lot in getting this achievement. Most of them are spot on! I still had problems with Control & Velocity. I couldn't get the Screwball, but switched to a Forkball and got it after a few tries by aiming for the first box. On Contact & Power, I couldn't hit any opposite field hits until I started holding lower right on the stick.

Where can you go to check the status of the completed drills?

I just don't get the control/velocity one. I've tried everything and it seems to never register my pitches when they're close.

For anyone reading this still, for the fielding drills, picking Left Field was way easier than Center or Right field. Even with modified stats I was failing until I switched it to Left Field.

For all the millions still chasing this cheevo, for Control and Velocity you can modify the pitcher you use to have just 2 pitches. I edited Rivera to only have a 2 seamer and Cut Fastball and it was cake - didn't have to worry about the Tapping A fastball!

The tip about tapping A for the fastball was awesome for control and velocity, worked every time, however, there's no need to over complicate the rest of the drills. The suggestions in the other solution for the remaining drills make them more than achievable with their base stats. No need to constantly be updating players for each drill.

You can also earn gold on drills during your My Player career mode and they count towards this.

Hitting/Running/Outfield - Ichiro (SEA)
Infield - Pujols (STL)
Catcher - Yadier Molina (STL)

Pitching - This becomes more difficult. The control and speed test was the hardest for me, but I ended up getting it with Johan (NYM). I found it easiest to do with him because he only has three pitches that don't move very much. The composure one took some luck, as sometimes the defense throws to the wrong base. Mariano Rivera (NYY) is a good bet for this one.

I agree, this is much easier to follow to get this for all but control and velocity. The other solutions tip about tapping A for fastball really helps with that drill.
