I know this is an older title, but I wanted to add a couple notes to help anyone who, like me, tends to stay a season behind to save some money.
As the achievement suggests, you must strike out all three hitters in a row. There will be times when you strike out three batters in one inning but not in a row (allowed a hit or two, a walk, a hit batsman, etc) and the game announcer will still say that you struck out the side. This does NOT unlock the achievement.
You must face three batters and strike all three out.
If you want to do this legitimately, it is recommended that you take a pitcher with whom you are comfortable. I used Cliff Lee, who is just nasty and is very easy to control. Facing a team with lackluster batting helps too, so consider a match with the NL All-Stars versus the Pittsburgh Pirates or the Washington Nationals (preferably the Pirates).
If you want to do this less than legitimately, consider starting a new Franchise (and following the hints for the Production achievement) and using the GM - Manage Rosters option to increase your statistics for high control and high movement, strong Vs Left and Vs Right stats, as well as a high Strikeout Tendency. You can also set your options so you can alter the opposition roster, and if you like, you can lower their Eye Vs Leftie, Eye Vs Right, Out by Strikeouts Tendency, and any other stats you like to alter their ability to hit the ball.
If you draft a strong catcher like Joe Mauer who can very effectively call a game and manage a pitching staff, thats all the better. It seems to positively affect the quality of the pitch selection if you purchase the Inside Edge data on your opposition before you face them.
One final note... dont be afraid to alter your pitch speed. While this seems more effective against human opponents instead of AI, you dont have to throw max pitches all the time to get swings out of the hitters. You also dont have to throw strikes to get strikeouts. 75%-100% 12-6 Curveballs that start in the middle of the strike zone but then drop and hit the plate are almost always swung at!
