How to unlock the Combat Specialist achievement in Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds - Definitive Guide

To unlock this achievement you need to either;

1. Accumulate 56400 total Rank Points or,
2. Fight someone who has already surpassed the 1st Lord Rank. (You only have to finish the match, win or lose)

This is NOT a viral achievement, in the sense of being able to unlock it by playing with anyone who has the achievement.
The only way to obtain it is by doing either of the options above.

Now there are a few ways you can go about doing this.
You can either play legit and take your chances against spammers and pros.

You can get a friend to boost with you by using my method here:

Or, you can try to contact someone on the leaderboards who has a 1st Class Rank and see if they would let you fight them in a Ranked match.

Chances are, they won't. So your best bet would be to boost with a friend or try your luck playing legit.

I hope this has helped you have a better understanding of this achievement, if you have any questions then feel free to ask.

As of February 02, 2013: There are still some high-ranked players playing online. They are more scarce, but I managed to get matched up with a Master Lord this morning.

The First Lords seem to like playing on Lobbies and Player matches more than ranked matches (guess they don't want to risk getting ranked down). Just keep playing, and eventually you'll get matched with one.

If you would like to try a different method of obtaining this achievement then please continue reading.

I tried playing for a day legit and tried messaging people on this site to try to get this achievement but ultimately I didn't.facepalm I didn't want to spend anymore time than I needed to, so I'm going to explain the method that I used and share it with anyone who still wants this achievement. (especially since this game is getting dated)

* Just giving you the heads up but you need a computer and you need to access your xbox.com account.

- First turn the game on and navigate yourself to the Rank Leaderboads from the menu. You will see that there are about 30+ 1st Lords and higher starting from the top to bottom. (Number may change.)

- Then go to your pc and open a notepad, or a word document, or MS word, or anything you can get yourself to type a message on.compute

- Then we are going to attempt to write a message template on the notepad to message these guys for help. ex: "Hello I was wondering if you can help me get an achievement. It will only take two minutes of your time. Please msg me if you can help thanks." Be polite as possible and avoid being a demanding jerk.

- Next sign into your Xbox.com account online (on your pc). Entitled Gamer has even produced a link: https://live.xbox.com/en-US/Messages?xr=shellnav (please thumbs up his solution)!

- Then click on messages to prepare to send a message.

- On the message box, copy and paste your wonderful pathetic message from your notepad.

*Now comes the tedious part, but hopefully you only need to do it once.

- On the recipients box you are going to enter the first twenty (some have reported only ten) 1st Lords and higher on there, then send the message. Afterwards you are going to create another message and add the rest of the Lords on the list to the recipients box, then send that message too. (The idea is that you are only sending two mass messages to the Lords for help. Sending it to all the 1st Lords and higher gives you a better chance of a reply. Plus this is just way easier to do than to type the message and all the gtag's on your controller.)

- Then the only thing you can do is wait and pray for one of the Lords to message you back. (I left my Xbox on after I sent the message and just waited to see if someone would message me back. Low and behold one Lord messaged me, then two, and by the end of the night I had four Lords that messaged me in total. I also got messages after that night from other different Lords.)

- Once you get in contact with one get into a private chat or a party. So you guys have clear communication with each other.

- Then the both of you need to get into the "Rank" lobby and set your settings the same. MAKE SURE TO CHANGE YOUR LANGUAGE TO "DEUSTCH" or any language that would have less traffic.

- Once your settings are completely the same then both of you need to countdown and enter the match at the SAME TIME! (The key here is to get paired up with one another at the same time, hopefully with luck!)

- Once you are both in the game together, OFFER NO RESISTANCE AND HAVE HIM "PERFECTLY" DESTROY YOU! (It's the least you can do for his generosity to boost his rankings in the meanwhile boost your own achievement!)

- Cheevo unlocked!clap

- Next step is to praise and worship this generous gamer that helped your sorry ass. If it wasn't for him then you would of had to play this game a thousand times and force yourself to get good enough to reach 1st Lordship! If you suck like I did, then you should even be more oh so very grateful to this guy!

I really got lucky that there are still some good fellow gamers that were willing to message me back to help me. If you unluckily didn't get a response from your first messages, then try the next week or the following two weeks. The leaderboards always change so you can always try later! I can't guarantee you the same kind of luck but I really do hope you get it!

Good luck and happy boosting! wave

Looking at the leaderboards, I found out that it was mostly American's and British players that were first lords or higher. So set your search settings to Any for region, English for Language and Skill to Any. This will be the best way to find 1st rank players. Oh, you must be a fighter, because rookies and beginners can't fight 1st rank players.

Doing this, I've played with some 1st lords a few times.

If you negativate this solution, please let me know why, in order to improve it.

For those reading this, you can follow the settings but ignore the level requirement as its not quite right. I found and fought a Level1 as a Rookie on my very first search.

Yeah, I came here to mimic what Kerman7 said... over a year ago. This was a great way to find a first lord ranked player. Ran into a 1st Lord on my first search outside of boosting with other members here and on x360a and got the achievement despite being a rookie.

This will not be a brief guide, and I apologize for that, but this is written to inform a player of the ranking structure as well as how to receive the Combat Specialist achievement (a year after release and the stand-alone Ultimate edition) since they are not mutually exclusive.

To obtain the Combat Specialist Achievement, you must do one of the following:

• Reach the 13th Dominant Rank "1st Lord" from Online ranked play
• Fight against another player in a ranked match that is or has surpassed the 13th Dominant Rank

Becoming a 1st Lord is no easy task.

There are several different titles you can achieve other than Lord through online play. You may be deemed a Scout, Ranger, Judge or Guard. One of these titles will be given to you based off of your five ranked tracked stats once you have surpassed the 4th novice rank “Fighter”. The five tracked stats are:

1. Stability – Lord
• Dependent on Win : Loss ratio, remaining health at end of matches (perfects)
2. Advanced Offense – Scout
• Increases with Combos, Team Aerial Combos, Hypers, Snap Backs
3. Advanced Defense – Judge
• Increases with Advance Guards, Team Aerial Counters, Crossover Counters
4. Basic Offense – Ranger
• Increases with Basic Attacks and Chain Combos
5. Basic Defense -- Guard
• Increases with Block

Here’s a ranking summary up to the 1st Titles. There are four more titles passed these, all of which will proc the achievement to be unlocked if they’re still in the lord category.

External image

The highest of your tracked stats will give you the respective title. You are rewarded a certain amount of points for your gameplay in a match, exactly the same as how it’s done in Arcade mode, based on the five factors above. Those amounts will translate to both ranked EXP gained and your stats, so avoiding certain tactics (like avoiding adv guards) to maintain higher stats in another will slow EXP gain for ranks.
Maintaining the Lord position can be difficult (especially to a novice of fighting games), but it can be reachieved without a full rank up as they’re dynamic titles potentially switching between every match.

If you end up liking the game enough to go this route and become a 1st Lord, be warned, this will take upwards of 2500 matches. Despite the games themselves being quick, keep in mind that the good bulk of the player base of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 has moved onto Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. Finding matches even at peak hours throughout the weekends is a difficult task (23minutes to find a match against another same ranked player on a Saturday night). “Quick Match” without any restrictions on ranking, location and language are faster, but it would be difficult to find similar skilled players when you’re normally pit against 4th-6th tiered players that dominate the servers which makes keeping a lord title difficult after losing harshly at the start of your fighting career.

Boosting in ranked can be a difficult, but it's possible. You may set up a custom match to something specific like your own rank, location and language preference, but the game will not pair you against the same person after so many matches quickly. Me and another user here on TA had a 16 minute wait time despite both searching for additional matches under the same specific guidelines.

Now, the benefits of becoming a 1st Lord are not small either. You can become the hero TA deserves. And unlock anybody’s achievement on demand by facing them in a custom ranked match and every random pug you come across. People will praise being bashed in by you. And Kansas will sing Wayward Son as TA members pull out lighters and sway back and forth.

That could be you.

Yes, you.

Or you can get the achievement in about two days tops using the methods described by Templar Punk and DiegoCaldo here throughout the solutions.

I’d respect you if managed to do the above. That’s both dedication and talent, man. If this couldn’t be unlocked by losing to a 1st Lord, “Seriously” might not be the achievement everybody complains about, but it’s just too unrealistic. But at least you now know how to get the 1st Lord rank yourself which had never been described here on TA.

Your best bet to get this randomly, as DiegoCaldo describes is to go into the Ranked Playlist, select Custom battle with “Any” for region, “English” for Language, and “Any” for rank parameters. The majority of higher ranking players use these restrictions to find games. As somebody that’s gotten this achievement on both of my profiles in less than two days, I can vouch that it works. You can also search the lobby, but the only two 1st Lords I’ve come across there both denied me a match. Your mileage may vary.

Templar Punk also has a great method that I highly suggest doing if you cannot run into one randomly or do not wish to play the game online.

He or she wrote that you’re able to search the leaderboards, so you can quickly message each and every user that’s achieved 1st Lord or higher status (there are less than 100 players total) through Xbox’s website at https://live.xbox.com/en-US/Messages?xr=shellnav . It’s bloody brilliant and the results had multiple 1st Lords contacting Templar Punk within hours to the next few days for a match.

Ask politely; let them destroy you for a perfect game to improve their record, and enjoy your 30g (and over 100TA) as you sing Carry on Wayward Son.

Hey, thanks. Just a shame this isn't a realistic solution, I mean why do it the 5 month way when you can do it the 5 minute way? But it just irked me that it was never explained.

I just played last night. I was a 7th Ranger. I'm now a 6th lord. I'm currently working my way to either get 1st lord or beat a first lord.

What I did to get mine was did "Ranked Match" search in Arcade mode and changed my Rank Limit to settings "Any" 6 matches later I was paired against a High Lord. I got my butt handed to me but I got the Achievement.

There are two ways - long or simple.

If you liked the game and are ready to spend hours training and online, then you can rise to the “1st” rank by winning online matches and get a trophy.

Or go to “ranking match” - “custom match” and set “Any” in all search settings. Depending on the time of day and your luck, after a certain number of attempts you will be connected to a player of the first rank. It is not necessary to win; after the end of the battle you will also receive a trophy (if there is no disconnection).
