How to unlock the Catharsis achievement in Mass Effect 2 - Definitive Guide

As soon as Jack joins your crew, you need to start speaking with her at every opportunity when you are aboard the Normandy. Eventually, Kelly will tell you that Jack would like to speak with you, so head down to her little hidey-hole in Engineering. Jack will tell you that she would really, really like to go to the Cerberus facility where she was held prisoner - and blow it right the hell up.

The mission indicator will now show up on your galaxy map, so go there. The mission is straight-forward, so just work your way through until you reach Jack's cell. Ask her about the objects in the room to get a cutscene and a ride back to the Normandy.

Be warned: If you have already completed Miranda's loyalty mission, it is possible to lose the loyalty of either Jack or Miranda when you return to the Normandy. This can be avoided if your Paragon is higher than your Renegade. You will also lose the chance at a relationship with the character you alienate. You can regain the loyalty of the character you alienate later, but only if you have a high enough Paragon/Renegade rating.

EDIT: Thanks to Billy Horrible for providing the following information. I will include his entire comment here, because it's rather involved:

You can avoid losing either if Paragon or Renegade is high enough (Paragon doesn't need to be higher, I have Renegade twice the ammount of Paragon).

Once you're butting in on them, there are both a Paragon and a Renegade option (those things on the left in blue and red) that will be available if your corresponding skill is high enough. I was able to tell them both to shut the hell up, and they both remained loyal.

Only if neither skill is high enough you have to choose sides, but if you assign squad points to that skill that doubles your Paragon/Renegade and stick to one of the two during the first half of the game, you should be fine.

Hey, thanks for the info. That's a great help. I've included it in the solution so others will know.

You're welcome smile thumbs up for the warning; too bad many people will only see it when it's too late.

Thanks for the warning - I had already done Miranda's mission before I read this sadly - but now having done the mission I have to correct you. You can avoid losing either if Paragon or Renegade is high enough (Paragon doesn't need to be higher, I have Renegade twice the ammount of Paragon).

(Missable) Talk to Jack in between missions. She is in the lowest level of the ship, in the sub-deck cargo hold. Loyalty missions will not be available until after the mission on Horizon is completed

Make your way through the facility, asking Jack about little things along the way. There are enemies scattered around the facility, mostly Blood Pack mercenaries. When you reach Jack’s cell, you’ll have to make a decision on whether another former resident at the facility lives or dies. I allowed him to live, but either way, upon completion, Jack will become loyal.

Once Jack’s and Miranda’s loyalty missions are complete, then there is a chance that they will get into a fight and you’ll have to choose to side with one of them. The longer that you wait to complete both of their loyalty missions, the higher your paragon/renegade rating will be to either diffuse the situation, or get one of them back loyal again. With a high enough paragon/renegade rating, you can end the fight and keep them both loyal. Use either the blue or red dialogue option on the left side.

There is an extremely valuable power that you can get after Jack is loyal, Warp Ammo. This is the most versatile as it's good against armor, shields, and barriers. Go to the research lab and select Advanced Training (5000 element zero). Here you can select any of the powers that are unlocked by companions becoming loyal. Even if you lose Jack after the fight with Miranda, you can still acquire Warp Ammo.

After you complete the mission on Horizon, all the characters in your party will ask you to help you with their personal problem. Just talk to the desired character and take the quest; your secretary informs you of all desires to talk to you, so it’s very difficult to miss. Talk to Jack and help her with her problem - the trophy is yours.

I would like to add that after this mission you will receive a trophy , and then Miranda will have disagreements with Jack; if you choose Miranda’s position, you will lose Jack’s loyalty and, it seems, vice versa (haven’t checked). Moreover, if you are seeking the “romantic” trophy with one or another, then the wrong answer can ruin your relationship in As a result, you may not get the trophy
