How to unlock the Shotgun Expert achievement in Mass Effect - Definitive Guide

Starting out Shotguns are not very good weapons, they have horrible accuracy and overheat in a handful of shots.

I recommend saving up for the Spectre Gear Shotgun, which has tremendous accuracy and doesn't overheat as often. Pair this with upgrades that improve stability / accuracy and attack power, along with some beefy ammunition (I prefer Polonium Rounds).

By end game with that setup you can pull off long range shots and kill most regular enemies in 1 to 2 shots (for normal difficulty).

Note: Shotgun kills carry over all games

Related question...anybody know if the kills that my squad registers with shotguns count towards my total, or does it have to be Shepard?

I believe it must be done by you, squad kills don't count.

Shotguns are great;) they're bad at start but if you invest in them they become killing machines:) The only weapon I dislike is assault rifle,
"you shoot a lot
and for what?" - old chinese proverb about assault rifles
"Aim your shot
and hurt a lot" - old chinese proverb about shotguns

For all of the achievements related to number of kills, I suggest getting the Pinnacle Station downloads and just go for the "Hunt" or "Time Trial" modes again and again until you get the achievements. For the "Time Trial" you basically get 20 free kills, so get all of your weapon achievements that way.

Great advice; I got three kills achievements in half an hour on a single Capture mission. Thanks a lot!

My question is: do you have to choose new mission when replaying the time trial over and over or can you just hit restart last mission? I only ask because I have gone through time trial on warehouse enough times to amount to 160 kills and it still hasn't popped for me, but I have been using the restart last mission. I also leave my partners at the start of the map so they won't be stealing my kills from me

Nvm, I retract my question, the achievement finally popped up for me. I must have been killing enough of them with my biotic powers to cause it to not be a shotgun kill.

Disclaimer: Kills carry over across all saves, and you don't have to save for them to count. This solution is for people who just want to grind the achievement as quickly as possible, even if untrained in Shotguns. You must have command of the Normandy before you can follow this solution.

Killing friendly critters counts towards your kills. Go to the planet Eletania (in the Hercules system of Attican Beta) where you will find several colonies of little monkey aliens. Simply drive up to one in the Mako, save your game, and shoot each of the monkeys with your shotgun of choice. When they're all dead, reload your save and repeat.

There are about ten monkeys in each colony, so you'll need to do this fifteen times at most. Note that there are poisonous toxins in the atmosphere that will eventually kill you, but you should be able to get all the monkeys before then.

This trophy requires you to register 150 kills with your Shotgun.

If you near the end of the game and find that you don't have this achievement, there are several methods in which you can attain it without another playthrough, some of which are listed below:

1) Reload a previous save and find a mission that has a lot of enemies - the game registers kills outwith your save, so you can reload the mission over and over.

2) Create a new character, make a new save when you first exit the Normandy and play Eden Prime, reloading your save when you reach the Conduit (preferably utilising a Soldier for this method).

3) Mission: UNC: Lost Module - Visit the planet Eletania (Attican Beta Cluster/Hercules System). Upon entering the Hercules system Shepard will be given a mission by Admiral Hackett. When you touch down on the planet, investigate the downed probe (marked on your map) - this will cause several colonies of Pyjak ("Space Monkeys") to appear. Save your game, clear the colonies with your weapon of choice and reload. Repeat this until the achievement pops.

*Be aware that Eletania has a Level 1 Toxic Hazard - take necessary precaution!*

See "Pistol Expert" for more info.

The Shotgun training is only available to Soldiers and Vanguards, but can be done by anyone. Focus on getting as close to enemies as you can, fighting Husks and Thorian Creepers are the best enemies for this achievement, as they need to get in close in order to damage you.
