Each level has a heart container that will increase your health bar by 2.
The following has all the heart tanks except the one in Chill Penguin’s stage:

Chill Penguin (requires Fire W.): Right after exiting the first cave you’ll come across the ride armor, get in stand on the small blue pipe after the gap. At the apex of the ride armor’s jump, jump out of the armor to reach the ledge above. Use Fire W. On the round blue platform the dragonfly enemies come out of to find the heart container.
Spark Mandrill: Right after you see the bomb launching turtle. Instead of climbing down the ladder, climb up the right wall and you’ll see it on a ledge. You need to dash jump up to it.
Armored Armadillo: After the second rail platform ride, charge up your X Buster before falling down the next segment. Land on the left side of the screen and then shoot rock clearing robot as fast as you can as there is 0 room for error if you’re using the X Buster. If you’re fast enough you will destroy it before it gets to the heart container and you can climb to it. If you happen to have Fire W., this will make short work of the robot also. Otherwise, it will clear the rocks and you won’t be able to reach it.
Launch Octopus: After you defeat the purple submarine, you will come across turbines that will create an upward current. Take the 3rd one (where you see bombs dropping from the surface) and jump onto the floating submarine. Stand on the far left edge so you’re less likely to get hit and shoot it until it dies. It will create a new path underwater and in the next room you will fight a eel-like robot. Once defeated you can get the heart container.
Boomer Kuwanger (requires B. Cutter) : After riding the elevator up and avoiding the spikes, you will climb up the outside of the building. You will see it as you go back inside the build as it’s hard to miss. Use the B. Cutter to pull the heart container to you.
Sting Chameleon: At the end of the first segment, instead of entering the cave, drop down what appears to be a hole to your death but slide down the right wall. You’ll end up going underwater and you can break the blocks by jumping off them. Once past the wall, you will need to do a leap of faith dash jump to the right as over the bottomless pit as the ledge holding the heart container off the right edge of the screen.
Storm Eagle: Right at the beginning of the level, ride the platforms to the top but instead of going right, do a dash jump to the left to reach the platform containing the heart container.
Flame Mammoth (requires Chill Penguin to be defeated): After the first segment of the level you drop down a hole to a lower area. Stay underneath the elevated platforms and at the far right is the heart container.
Sub Tanks:
I know there isn’t an achievement for collecting the 4 Sub-tanks but I thought this would be the most appropriate place to put them.
Armored Armadillo: Right after the first rail platform ride. As you drop down the hole, slide down the left wall and let the spike armed robot pass beneath you. Drop down and go the left where it came from and find the sub tank.
Storm Eagle: After riding the platforms at the start to the top, you’ll see an enemy on a pole that goes up and down. After defeating this enemy, ride his platform up to the top and shoot the glass to open it. Follow this path to the sub tank.
Spark Mandrill (requires B. Cutter): After climbing the first ladder in the level, climb down the second one and head right and you will see it behind the wall. Stand under the 3rd ladder and equip B. Cutter. At the apex of you jump, shoot the Cutter and it should go down instead of up and bring the sub tank to you.
Flame Mammoth: In the same room as the heart container. Climb to the highest platform and make your way all the way to the left. The sub tank is behind a wall of blocks that can be destroyed by jumping off them.
Additionally, the code from above does not have the leg armor upgrade so on the way to the heart tank, you will also get the “First Armor” achievement.

I can remember never finding the Heart Tank in Chill Penguin's stage until years later I found a guide book that showed me where it was. Pretty embarrassing.
Also, the Heart Tank in Spark mandrill's stage was the worst one for me to get because I always needed to use the B. Cutter to get it and it was tricky. NEVER knew I needed to mash both the Jump and Dash buttons at the same time while wall-climbing to get up to that ledge.

You need all 8 heart tanks for this one
Chill Penguin: (Beat Flame Mammoth first)
Use fire shot on the first igloo above the Ride Armor cave
Storm Eagle: (Needs Dash Boots)
At the start of the stage ride the contraption to the top, then dash off the top to the left you will land on the heart
Launch Octopus: (Might need Storm Tornado? Not really sure on that)
When you reach the rising whirlpool tubes you will find a battleship in the water. Sink it, to unlock a hidden room with a seadragon bot. Carefully beat this guy without falling in spikes to earn your heart.
Flame Mammoth: (Beat Chill Penguin first)
When you reach the area with the miners throwing pickaxes just slide on the frozen floor for the heart
Boomerang Kuwanger (Beat Chill Penguin, Get Arm Part)
Yea you can do this without the ice but why bother? Charge up Shotgun Ice and ride the Penguins corpse to grab the heart. Its located near the end of the stage
Sting Chameleon: (Beat Launch Octopus, Get Boots)
Near the beginning there is a pit with some breakable rocks and a large pit. You can't cross this until the stage is partially flooded, at that point you can easily dash jump to grab it
Spark Mandrill: (Dash Boots)
In one of the blackout sections after the mid boss its hiding in the upper right corner before you go down ladders protected by those weird spiked unicycle bots
Armored Armadillo: (Easier with Fire Shot)
Located at the second giant mining bot, if you blow him up before he disables the way to get the heart you can just climb the wall and grab it.

There is a hidden Heart Tank in every boss stage, for 8 in total. Their locations are:
- Flame Mammoth – It’s located in a pool of lava in the room with all the Dig Labor’s, the Sub Tank and the Arm Parts. You must beat Chill Penguin’s stage to make the lava freeze over, allowing you to walk on it.
- Spark Mandrill – It is hidden in a small alcove in the upper right corner right after the first Mega Tortoise, before the second dark corridor. Use Boomerang Cutter to grab it.
- Armored Armadillo – You either need to be in front of the second Mole Borer as it chases you, or kill it very fast so you can climb a rock formation to get the Heart Tank in the tunnel, before the Mole Borer trashes it and makes it unreachable. If this happens, exit and reenter the stage to try again.
- Boomer Kuwanger – After beating his stage, return with his weapon. Climb up the tower and use the Boomerang Cutter or charged Shotgun Ice to grab the remote Heart Tank.
- Chill Penguin – After the end area with Ride Armor’s, once you get on the snowy hill dash jump to the ceiling on the left. Use Fire Wave to destroy the bunkers. It will be hidden in the middle bunker.
- Storm Eagle – At the beginning, get to the very top of the conveyor and dash jump to the far left. It’s on the roof of the building where you teleport in.
- Launch Octopus – In the underwater section, there is a part where missiles will be falling down on you and a giant door on the floor. Use the whirlpool generators to get to the water surface and fight the ship up there. Once it’s destroyed, it will fall through the floor, opening an underground path to a room where you must fight the Utuboros (don’t confuse this Utuboros for the one that’s mandatory to clear the stage). Once it’s defeated, you can get the heart tank on the right.
- Sting Chameleon – At the beginning of the stage right before the room with the falling rocks and the Body Parts, slide down the opening pitfall by clinging to the wall to a hidden lower room. Do not drop as the pit is still there. By beating Launch Octopus the room will be flooded. You can break into the room on the right using the foot parts, then dash jump through the water to the platform the heart tank is on.
This password will give you 7 of the 8 heart tanks, except for the one in Storm Eagle's stage.
