How to unlock the I am THE expert on weapons achievement in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Definitive Guide

Missable There are 69 weapons in total in the game. They do not have to be acquired in the same playthrough, but you must save over the same file after you complete each playthrough. For this trophy, you will need to get 65 weapons. The four remaining weapons can be acquired by getting some emblems and since they can also be acquired via passwords, they are not needed for the trophy. Most weapons can be found as you play the game in certain parts. Almost all of the weapons can be purchased via the Drebin Store. Below is a list of all the weapons and their locations. Note that the prices posted in the Drebin Store are the standard prices, not including the 20% discount on Wednesdays and Sundays and the 50% discount during Act 5. It is advised to set your PS3 clock system to Sunday to get discounts and/or wait until Act 5 to buy the weapons in half the price.
 

Handguns

  • MK. 2 Pistol: Story based, when you meet with Mk. II in Act 1
  • SA 1911 Operator: Story based, when you meet with Mk. II in Act 1
  • Five-seveN: This weapon is bought off Drebin Store for 6,000 Points. Can also be found by getting it off the FROG unit.
  • GSR: This weapon is bought off Drebin Store for 3,000 Points. Can also be found by killing some PMCs. The rebels in Act 2 can have this weapon as well.
  • PMM: This weapon is bought off Drebin Store for 3,500 Points. Can also be dropped by the resistance fighter during Act 3 if he sees you and tries to shoot you.
  • G18c: This weapon is bought off Drebin Store for 8,000 Points. Can also be acquired by getting it from the Dwarf Geckos.
  • Desert Eagle: This weapon is bought off Drebin Store for 20,000 Points. Can also be acquired by getting it from the Dwarf Geckos.
  • Mk. 23: It can be found during Act 4, underneath the truck north of the Helipad.
  • PSS: This weapon is bought off Drebin Store for 5,000 Points. It can also be found in various locations.
    • In a ventilation shaft in the Advent Palace during Act 1, just before you reach Rat Patrol 01 team.
    • In a fireplace inside the Vista mansion during Act 2 in the back room of the 1st floor.
    • At the end of Act 2, it can be found in the marketplace near a stall.
    • At the Midtown S Sector in Act 3, when you see the Resistance member turning left into an alley way, you can find it in a building down the alley.
    • At the start of Act 5, take a right and climb a ladder of one of the arches. Climb ladders until you reach the top.
    • To the left of the small room with the water tight door at the beginning of Act 5.

Submachine guns

  • P90: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 5,000 Points. Also acquired from FROG Unit.
  • M10: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 3,000 Points. Also acquired from Rebels in Act 2. If you help the Rebels at the beginning of the Act, they will unlock a special room that has this weapon inside.
  • MP7: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 3,000 Points. Also acquired from certain PMCs.
  • Vz.83: You obtain it as part of the story when you meet with Big Mama in Act 3.
  • Bizon: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 7,000 Points
  • MP5SD2: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 15,000 Points.

Rifles

  • AK 102: Obtained automatically as part of the story during Act 1
  • M4 Custom: Obtained automatically as part of the story during Act 1
  • Mk. 17: It can be found during Act 1 by picking it off various PMCs. Also can be purchased from Drebin Store for 3,500 Points.
  • G3A3: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 4,000 Points or picked up by Rebels during Act 2
  • FAL carbine: Can only be bought off Drebin Store for 4,500 Points
  • AN94: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 5,000 Points or found in the south east shack of Cove Valley Village during Act 2.
  • XM8: This can be found at the left side of Power Plant Part 2 where you found the PSS during Act 2. It’s under a shelter.
  • M14 EBR: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 9,000 Points or acquired by some PMC snipers. First found in Act 1
  • DSR-1: Obtained automatically as part of the story at the end of Act 2
  • SVD: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 18,000 Points or found in a shack of Cove Valley Village during Act 2. It can also be acquired by some PMC snipers.
  • VSS: Can only be found in the Confinement Facility during Act 2. It’s located in a far West base area inside a small building connected to other buildings.
  • Mosin-Nagant: Can only be bought off Drebin Store for 60,000 Points
  • M82A2: Can only be bought off Drebin Store for 200,000 Points
  • Rail Gun: Obtained automatically as part of the story during Act 4 after you defeat the Crying Beauty.

Other firearms

  • HK21E: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 6,000 Points or found in the Militia Safe House during Act 1. Knock out the rebel talking about getting an enemy gun and get the weapon.
  • M60E4: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 10,000 Points or acquired by the PMCs near the Vista Mansion during Act 2.
  • PKM: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 9,000 Points or acquired by the Rebels during Act 2.
  • Mk.46 MOD1: Can only be bought off Drebin Store for 9,000 Points
  • Twin Barrel: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 25,000 Points or acquired by getting it from Rebels in Act 2. If you help the Rebels at the beginning of the Act, they will unlock a special room that has this weapon inside.
  • M870 custom: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 30,000 Points or found in the Confinement Facility during Act 2. There is a PMC base North of this area. In a shed north west of this base.
  • SAIGA12: Can only be bought off Drebin Store for 40,000 Points
  • XM25: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 80,000 Points or acquired by the FROGs that are in the roof in Advent Palace during Act 1. There is one on top of a communication tower in Act 4 after defeating Crying Wolf.
  • MGL-140: Obtained automatically as part of the story during Act 3 after you defeat the Raging Beauty.
  • RPG-7: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 60,000 Points or found in the Militia Safehouse during Act 1 at the same place where you find the disguise and generally in various places in that area.
  • M72A3: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 40,000 Points or found in the Market Place during Act 2. From your starting location, go to the right wall and follow it all the way in the alley.
  • FGM-148 Javelin: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 150,000 Points. Can be found in Act 1 in the area where the militiamen bring in the tank. It's on the roof of the building that you can access by climbing the tall ladder in the back alley. (Credits to OldJimiDini)
  • FIM-92A Stinger: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 100,000 Points. Can be found in Act 2 at the power station. You have to make your way to the back and climb the substation ladder and then shimmy across on a wire extending to the adjacent substation that is otherwise inaccessible from the ground.   • Petrol Bomb: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 100 Points

    • They can also be obtained from Akiba in Advent Palace after one playthrough.

  • Claymore: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 300 Points
  • Sleep Gas mine: Can be bought off Drebin Store for 300 Points

There are a total of 69 weapons in the game. You can buy most of it from Drebin. According to the plot, we get an army knife, Ruger (tranquilizer), Colt 1911 (operator), Kalash, DSR-1 (sniper), MGL-140 grenade launcher (Rayvan weapon), railgun (Wulf weapon), Vz.83 (submachine gun, given by Eve in Act 3) and Mantis/Sorrow dolls (from the corresponding boss). Here are the weapons you will have to look for:

1. VSS (Vintorez) - can be found in Act 2. After the video with Drebin, choose the narrow path to the left of the road, go through a small canyon and in the next location you will come across an RMS outpost, where rebels are still being held hostage. So in one of the buildings lies this magnificent cannon.

2. XM8 (assault rifle) - in Act 2. After the video with Drebin, go to the canyon to the left of the main road, there is this machine gun.

3. Chaff (a grenade that creates electrical interference) - an extremely rare item, unlike previous games, which will be very useful when advancing to the Big Boss rank. The easiest way is to take it from the helipad in Act 4. Also available in Act 2, at the end in the market to the left of the last Gekko. In Act 3 in the far corner of the canal.

4. Solar Gun (HEX) - collect 5 boss figurines (Frogs, Octopus, Rayvan, Wulf and Mantis).

5. Race gun (a pistol with ricochet cartridges) and various types of smoke grenades you will receive simply by completing the game 1 time.

Special weapons such as Patriot (Boss weapon), Thor (Ocelot weapon), Desert with a long barrel (Meryl weapon), Chinese Mauser (Eva weapon), etc. you will receive at once for the assigned Big Boss rank. These trunks are not needed for the trophy.

A lot of Chaff grenades (perhaps even a maximum) can be shaken out from Johnny during the shootout between Meryl's group and the Frogs. You need to equip Chaff grenades and stand in front of Johnny, he will periodically throw two Chaff grenades at you. In turn, these grenades will be very useful when passing the Big Boss.

Emotion magazine also counts as a weapon if you have collected all the weapons (even if you bought emotion magazine before, you will have to do it again) and buy it from Drebin in Act 2.

It’s strange that no one above wrote this, but the trophy also requires Smoke Grenades = Smoke G. (Y, R, B, G) , which can be bought from Drebin after beating the game once.

Video showing what is where. The weapon that is indicated in the 2nd minute is not required for the trophy, it is not clear about the Solar Gun , so try to collect it on your first playthrough.

There are only 69 types of weapons in the game. You will buy the first 65 from Drebin or find them on your first playthrough, the remaining 4 are usually Desert Eagle (long barrel) , Thor.45-70 , Type 17 and Patriot . They can be replaced with colored Smoke Grenades, available by replaying in Drebin's store, but note that for the Little Gray emblem you need to collect all 65 weapons and the missing 4 (69 in total) listed above.
