How to unlock the Have Car, Will Travel achievement in Midnight Club: Los Angeles - Definitive Guide
This solution is for people who just want to drive to get their miles to add up quickly. If you are trying to get the full 1250/1250 don't boost your mileage until its pretty much the last thing you have to do. The goal attack races will add a decent amount of mileage (I added around 1100 Miles just from the goal attack races, including the South Central ones).
Instructions
1. Once you load up your current career, press the pause button, then press the Right Bumper to go to the "MODES" tab.
2. Go down to Xbox Live and then select "Player Match".
3. Create a custom match with these settings:
- Cruise
- Max Players 8 (this number doesn't really matter)
- Private Slots ALL (no randoms will join you)
- Vehicle Class, Weather, Time of Day: Whatever you prefer. (I use clear weather and noon for the time)
- Traffic OFF (makes driving a whole lot easier)
4. Once you are in your private cruise session get onto the Freeway.
5. Now all you have to do is drive your vehicle around and watch the miles add up.
6. Once you finish driving DO NOT just leave the online cruise and shut off your xbox. It wont save your miles. In order to get a save, once you get back into your career just pause the game and go to your garage. Once it loads quickly leave the garage. When you appear outside it will save your game. Then you are safe to shut off your xbox.
This map shows the route that I drove.
* Sorry about the map quality, but it was the best picture I could find.
Random Stats
Total route length: 10 Miles (give or take 0.2 of a mile)
Average time to do a lap: 3 minutes (Me driving my fully upgraded 07 Ninja ZX14)
Theory time to get 5000 Miles:
5000 miles / 10 miles (per lap) = 500 laps
500 laps X 3 minutes = 1500 minutes
1500 minutes / 60 = 25 hours of driving
25 hours to go from 0 to 5000 miles, doing nothing but laps on the freeway. Most people should be done at least 3000 miles by the time they finish every other achievement. I was at 4600 after I finished all of my goal attacks.
If you have any suggestions leave them in the comments and I will add them to my solution and give credit where it is due. Happy driving!
My method is way faster, but you actually have to put a little work into it.
After the career ended and I won every Goal Attack, I was at around 5000-5200 km's. I then opened the Race Editor, placed myself on the freeway, taped down RT and raced around town. I used a maxed out Kawasaki Ninja and drove almost all the time with 320-340 km/h.
While in Race Editor you have NO traffic, NO cops and, most important, NO DAMAGE. You will have to steer a bit and watch the screen from time to time, but I managed to watch 4 movies in the progress, plus maybe an extra hour, of getting that achievement.
I also returned to the garage every 60-90 minutes just to have it make a save of my progress. And the last 10 km's I drove on the regular game.
Hope this helps anyone who is still playing this game. Good luck!
- The separate stats for wheelie and two-wheeling DON'T count. The only stat that should be focused on is the 'Total Distance Traveled'.
- The cheevo is popped right away when passing the 5k mark, even when in the 'Race Editor'.
I found out you can boost your miles while in system link. The other console does not need the game nor even signed into a profile. Just hook up an ethernet cord to both consoles, select system link, then cruise. How many players does not matter as it's system link. Set traffic to off, time of day is whatever you prefer.
Now you can choose to go to the beach by the pier or drive around the freeway. Again it's your preference, I was using the beach method but it was not as effective as the South Central method below.
I saw this in the comments for the beach solution.

Side note- my game had been going for about an hour before I recorded the video. Where as the beach method I couldn't really leave the game alone.
The best way to do this, is place yourself in Race Editor mode and just drive around the town until the achievement pops. In Race Editor, no traffic, cops or damage can happen.
A maxed out Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder or Murcielago Roadster (or it's DUB Edition variant) are the best choices for the grind as they are very fast and have great handling. You may also want to watch some movies to help you from getting bored while grinding towards the 8,000 km/5,000 miles mileage, but you may have to watch the screen and steer a bit to prevent losing speed. A speed of 360-380 km/h (around 225-240 mp/h) would be the average speed driven in any of the higher-end exotics at max level.
I would also recommend returning to the garage every 60-90 minutes to be sure your mileage progress saves.
This is one of the best, but time-consuming methods. Hope it helps.
Well, even after doing every single other (disc-based) trophy in this game (except the platinum), I was still 250 miles short of 5000 miles. So, do NOT work on this until you've done everything else. Presumably, when you get to grinding this out, you will have a fully upgraded Ninja. There are two ways to go about the next step, depending if you have auditory preferences or not. If you want to listen to your own music (saved to your PS3 hard drive), then start an arcade race with the following settings: Race = "Welcome to Hollywood", Opponents = 1, Traffic = NONE, Powerups = NO, Weather = Clear, Time = NOON. Now, when the race starts, ignore it and hop on the 405 Freeway and start driving while listening to your tunes. You will be doing this for a while. If you don't care about music and just want to grind, set up a private online cruise with no traffic and clear weather. Then start doing loops around 405.

**"I'll note I finally got this to work but not in this location. If you have the South Central DLC there are some areas down there that are pretty wide open and flat. At first I tried the stadium but it was too small, then I tried the area with two baseball fields but after about 30 minutes it had run off and driven all over the city, going slow and getting damaged every now and then. There is a basketball court (on pavement) down there that worked for me though. I basically got my bike (maxed out Ninja) to hit certain things and it kept me in alignment. 12 hours into it and it's still running fine. Going in a counterclockwise motion (left analog stick tilted left), using max throttle and using the weight transfer for sharper turns, I'm hitting the two poles on the north side, then as it curves around left it hits another pole. (if the two poles are at the 12 o'clock position, the other pole I hit is at the 10 o'clock position). Speed stays constant at 100 mph and because it's just poles and not buildings or cars I'm taking no damage."**
Doing this method, I did not have to fix anything with my bike. Best of all no going into the water.
