If you have the Xbox One version, you can find an elytra in the tutorial world, then upload the save to the new version.
If you're starting fresh, an elytra is a set of wings that enables you to fly. You can find them in end cities. After you kill the dragon, you have to throw an ender pearl through a small floating bedrock portal that appears in the air near an obsidian tower. Once through, look for a floating ship up near the main end city structure. The elytra is in there.
This achievement is not as difficult as it sounds. First, dig a 1x1 hole that is at least 20 blocks deep. Then tunnel out and get back up to the surface. Next to the hole, build a tower that is at least 3 stacks of blocks high (just to be safe). Equip the elytra and jump off the tower, hugging the wall as you fall into the hole. As soon as you enter the hole, start tapping the jump button to activate the elytra. Unless there is water at the bottom or you are holding a Totem of Undying, you will die from this fall. However, this will get you the achievement.

No matter what I do it just won't pop for me

I'm in the same situation as Mize8 and I've attempted this achievement probably 20 times (or more) now. I have even landed alive in the water inside the 1x1 hole twice now. What is going wrong?
Also my game froze twice while I attempted this and then I got moved to the Xbox Home screen. Has anyone else had that issue? Specifically the game got me stuck in a tree before landing.

I tried this countless times doing the same method as the previous versions of minecraft. (Climbing the tower and jumping to the hole you make near the tree) it wouldn't work. I just did what this guide said and dug a hole exactly 20 squares deep, but I only built a tower maybe 30 blocks up and jumped, spammed the a button about 75% of the way down. Annnnd it popped.

I finally got it using one of the towers in the corner of the tutorial world. If at first you don't succeed, dig deeper and/or build higher.

Uploaded tutorial world from Xbox 1 edition. Had to dig the 1x1 hole by the tree 30 blocks deep. After jumping off the tower ledge and flying to my death I spawned back in and the achievement popped.

Okay I found the reason and feel stupid, I guess before I saved the tutorial world in the Xbox One Edition, I clicked disable autosave out of habit for pretty much any game and it counts as having cheats activated on the save, thus disabling achievements

Dont keep tapping, drop a while and then press and hold A (to fly with the Elytra Cape set as armor.

Just a note for anyone trying this, from the top of my tower to the bottom of my tower/pit was 40 coordinate points (57-97), so I think that might be the minimum height to reach that amount. I also placed a slime block at the bottom so I didn't keep dying.

Like WinjenNL said, drop for a second, and then hold A while looking down. I couldn't get this to unlock after several tries, then I tried holding A and it popped a couple seconds after I landed.

Done this on the achievement realm, didnt pop for a while and a lot of attemps. Tried again mashing the jump button most of the way down and it popped!

in the achievement realm this just will not pop for me. i have tried to hold the button while looking down and i have also tried to mash the button while looking down. nothing i do has been able to get this to pop anyone got any other ideas?

For those who use the achievement world and did not get this achievement, i have trouble getting this achievement on both PC and xboxone version. What I did was save&quit the game then did this again. Look down and fly for a second then hold A button. After quit& save I be able to get this achievement.

Confirmed June 9th 2021, but I had a hard time getting it until I realized you only had to tap once when falling to open the elytra (my silly mistake) That and since I struggled I dug 40 blocks down and used scaffold to build my way back up one block away from my hole

Small tip as I was having great difficulty in getting this to unlock. I tried going through a proxy on my PC to minecraftachievements server and whatever I tried, it never worked.
When I managed to get a connection to the realm, it worked first time.

PS, if you're having trouble finding the floating ship on those islands, do what I did: create a copy of your game, and in THE COPY, switch to creative mode. Then fly around until you find the ship, jot down the coordinates, and then load up the backup of your game and travel to the coordinates. As long as you never switch from survival to creative on your main save file (hence making a copy), you'll still be able to get the achievement.

This no longer seems to work, as every world I upload to the new version says achievements are disabled.
I uploaded two versions of the tutorial world from the original Xbox One version of the game, one with the autosave off, and one with it on, both say achievements cannot be obtained in them.
They've must have updated the game just recently so older version worlds will no longer let you earn achievements. Either that or I'm doing something wrong.
Hmm no wait, I tried again, renamed both worlds so I knew what world had the autosave on and off, and now it's say I can't earn achievements in the autosave on world, but I can with the off, weird.
Alright cool, took me a few tries, but it finally popped as I was making my way back to spot where I died to grab the wings again. The achievements in this version can be really quite delayed.
