How to unlock the Back In Time... achievement in Mortal Kombat - Definitive Guide

FINAL BATTLE STRATEGY - Raiden vs. Shao Kahn

For most players the story mode will have occasionally difficult battles, but not insurmountable with patience and maybe a bit of luck - until the final battle with Shao Kahn. You cannot luck or spam your way through this one without a strategy. Many players have suggested a distance strategy (reactive approach) but after playing and losing many times, I FOUND A PROACTIVE STRATEGY THAT WORKS BETTER.

To defeat Shao Kahn, you MUST have fast proficiency with Raiden's teleport move (Down, Up) - regardless of whether you use a close or distant strategy. Teleporting will drop you on the other side of Shao Kahn. A teleport should generally only be followed by one of two things: an uppercut (if you have the advantage), or another teleport (if you must dodge).

When scoring a knockdown, your natural instinct may be to fall back and get out of the way (i.e, the distance strategy). If you do this, he is still in control - you will have to try to anticipate and respond to his moves. His ranged behaviors will be random, possibly a dash, hammer, spear, or approach.

When scoring a knockdown, ignore your instincts and APPROACH Shao Kahn as he gets up. By doing so, you are creating a PREDICTABLE RESPONSE and TAKING CONTROL of the fight. He will nearly always try to attack you immediately when getting up. He is is vulnerable from behind when attacking. When he attacks, immediately teleport to dodge and uppercut him from behind (easier to pull off than a combo and ends in a knockdown). Then immediately approach again to repeat the process. Once you get the timing down you can make quick work of him.

A few other tips:
- When the match starts, he will often try to land an early attack. An immediate teleport is usually the best strategy.
- If you find yourself at ranged distance, wait for a projectile attack or taunt and immediately teleport and uppercut. At this point, he is knocked down so you can switch to the close approach strategy I detailed above.
- Avoid jumping, this usually just opens you up for attack. Teleport instead.
- When teleporting, if you sense that your timing is off, immediately teleport again to dodge the inevitable blow.

Won't help, have died over 30 times... 5 times out of 10 when I teleport behind him and my Uppercut misses him... :( That boss is absolutely pain in the ass... and my left tumb is burning.

I recommend teleporting to either side to avoid the boss, and when he taunts, run in for an uppercut. Crouch or teleport from the spears, and teleport from the hammers. I was able to time stall the boss two times in a row.

Thanks for the input but that's actually the distance method, not the one I described. That works too but my strategy is quite different (quicker and easier if you can get the timing right). Cheers

Along the storyline, there are a few types of battles that could cause you problems.

Firstly, the two-against-one battles. These are the hardest ones in my opinion, as you're subject to not only attacks from yur current opponent, but 'Tag Attacks' too. The only thing I can recommend for these types of battle is to keep jumping around in the air, and hit the enemy with uppercuts, unleashing your X-ray attacks as often as you can.

I did have trouble whenever facing Goro and Kintaro too. When you face Goro for the first time with Liu Kang, his bicycle kick move is the way to go (<--, -->, B). However, th jumping and uppercut method is also recommended when fighting the Shokans.

Finally, Shao Kahn. This guy, when attacking with his hammer, is a complete bastard. Learn his moves and how to dodge them (jump over his hammer, duck the spears), and I'd still recommend plowing in to him, due to the final tip below.

The last tip is, if you lose to someone a few times, they do become easier to fight. So don't stress too much, enjoy learning how he characters play, and you should have the story done with enough patience.

I'm not sure that losing multiple times to the AI makes them easier to fight. Sometimes it's just luck. For example, after twenty minutes of losing to Shao Kahn, there was a fight where he spammed the hammer moves only, getting him a flawless victory as the low hammer swing attack wouldn't allow me to teleport behind him and he got me into a corner very quickly. The second round of that fight was almost as brutal.

I finally beat Shao Kahn using Raiden, using a different strategy. I needed a different strategy because I had a lot of trouble with the teleport/uppercut strategy. Half the time when I tried to uppercut, it came out as one of the special moves that uses the Y button, thanks to the crappy Xbox D-pad. And half the time that I did pull off an uppercut, it didn't hit, because I arrived slightly too far away, or Shao Kahn did an attack in which he moved forward.

So, here's what I did: Get close to him, then jump OVER him, kicking him in the back before you hit the ground. Repeat until he's dead.

OK, it's not quite so simple as that. Sometimes the kick misses if you don't time it just right. But that's OK, because you still have time to do another attack once you hit the ground. I like to do the Superman move, because it's quick and easy to do, and it gives you a couple of seconds to rest your brain and refocus.

If you miss with the jump kick a lot, here's another technique. Jump over him, then Superman. After this you will be far away, so wait for him to attack, then teleport. Wait half a second for him to turn and face you, then jump over him and Superman again. After doing this a few times, he will be in the corner, since you keep Supermanning in the same direction. At this point, you can replace the teleport with a jump-over. In other words, jump over him into the corner, jump over him out of the corner, Superman. Repeat until he's dead.

I know this for an old game. There are some good guides on here, the Raiden strategy of abusing is Teleportcn_downcn_up is sound but I figured I would supply a video that shows it in action so you can see what happens because none of these guides have a video.

I do use a Sweep or his Electric Fly special move more than an Uppercut but an Uppercut works fine if you are close.

Story Mode follows the events of the first three Mortal Kombat games but offering a new alternate twist on the saga. There are 16 Chapters that must be completed and 67 fights total. You must follow one character for each Chapter as the story unfolds. You can change the difficulty to Beginner if you go to Options in the main menu.

Johnny Cage (Reptile, Baraka, Sonya Blade, Kano)
Sonya Blade (Sub-Zero, Raiden, Jade/Kitana, Kano)
Scorpion (Kung Lao, Nightwolf, Cyrax/Sektor, Sub-Zero)
Cyrax (Sheeva, Baraka, Johnny Cage, Sektor)
Liu Kang (Ermac, Kitana, Scorpion/Quan Chi, Goro, Shang Tsung)
--End of First Tournament--

Jax (Baraka, Johnny Cage, Jade, Sheeva)
Smoke (Kitana, Kano, Sub-Zero/Reptile, Sektor)
Sub-Zero (Cyrax, Ermac, Reptile, Scorpion)
Kitana (Smoke/Johnny Cage, Jade, Mileena, Shang Tsung)
Jade (Baraka, Sheeva, Mileena, Smoke)
Kung Lao (Noob, Goro, Shang Tsung/Quan Chi, Kintaro)
Liu Kang vs Shao Khan
--End of Second Tournament--

Stryker (Reptile, Mileena, Kintaro, Ermac)
Kabal (Kano, Mileena/Noob, Cyber Sub-Zero, Sheeva)
Cyber Sub-Zero (Sektor, Kintaro/Goro, Ermac, Noob)
Nightwolf (Quan Chi, Cyrax, Sektor, Sindel)
Raiden (Scorpion, Jax-Stryker-Kabal, Kitana-Nightwolf-Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Shao Khan)

When fighting against Shao Khan the first time, hit him with an uppercut whenever he taunts and duck under his spears. Use a low fireball as much as you can to whittle his health down. The second time you fight him teleport behind him and uppercut repeatedly.

You should unlock "Halfway There!" after Kitana's battle with Johnny Cage and Smoke.

To make it easier to complete the story, go to the settings (in the main menu) and set the minimum difficulty level in Story Mode. I myself reached chapter 12 and only later found out about it.
