There's a bug with this on the Steam version where you need to equip the great sword in the top slot or it won't work, AND if you put it in the wrong slot you can't get it with that companion anymore. It seems this bug is also in the One version, as I could not unlock it with a character I had put it in the 3rd slot for, no matter what I did.
I tried it with a male character I'd never given a weapon to in the first slot and it worked. It also didn't work for me until I gave an actual great sword. It appears any two handed sword doesn't work. Another possibility is that the unlock is simply delayed it was a couple minutes delayed for me and for LLboxed as well. His delay was a couple minutes, not sure what mine was.

What was weird to me was that it didn't pop right away even after putting it in the main weapon slot for Marnid. I then continued playing normally and made a mental note to read up on this a little more later; it popped 2 minutes later.

Did you try the top slot first? I think it only bugs out if you try one of the other slots before the top one. I forgot about the delay, I had it too. I'll add that in. Thanks!
