Hangar. Create plane. Upgrade. All. Pick a style of plane (any will do). Save. Repeat until achievement pops.
When it says 'same', it doesn't mean five planes of the same type. It means five planes but each one has to use a set of parts, not a mixture from different sets.

If you create them from the main menu hangar the achievement will pop when you enter the hangar in story mode

You unlock this trophy whenever you want. Just follow these steps: Go to the hanger and create a new plane. When editing the plane, go to the “Upgrades” option and then choose the “All” option. While in this option, the planes you create will all have parts from the same aircraft. Pick one, then save. Now repeat four more times.
