I did this on Richmond International Raceway. go to single player and select eliminator. do the following when prompted:
Opponent Difficulty: Easy
Opponents: 42
Timer: 10 (this is the lowest it goes)
Leave the car setup on "Richmond" and set it to custom. Make sure all sliders are up.
The elimination begins after the first lap is completed. If you do this, you should not have trouble making your way to the front since you must start 43rd. Go below the yellow line if you need to, just don't hit any walls head on.

Just a little thing I picked up on you may want to add in to the solution:
Drafting wins races. I think the best way to get to the front, on any track really, is to draft and slingshot around the car in front of you, it helps out a TON. The final racers are somewhat tough to deal with if they can draft together. I've lost several races from a pair of drivers drafting up past me.
