How to unlock the Sad Eggs achievement in Neon Abyss - Definitive Guide

Once you unlock Ming is when you should go for this. Unlike the one for hatching eggs this one can be forced and not random.

Ming has an ability to press B to stop an egg from hatching, here's the best thing about this, failed eggs auto hatch, so all you have to do is press B to cancel the actual egg from hatching and the others will fail automatically.

There's another way, The gun "Rainbow" has an active that stop you hatching eggs.

That physically stops them from hatching though so that they always just follow you.
They never hatch to something or hatch to fail.

Tried again without buying any, it popped midway through level 8. Honestly it felt more like 20, though. A good amount more than 10 for sure.

Mine popped at about 20 failed eggs.

Ok so from what I can tell it has to say hatching failed 5 times in a row, even if you cancel a successful one it's already reset the counter which is why it's taking people different amounts of failed eggs.

Yep as soon as I got 5 fails in a row without having to cancel one it popped. So this is just RNG. Maybe you'll get lucky and get what I assume must be a glitch (no it wasn't an item) where every egg fails to hatch because I just got 25 fails in a row and that's where the run finished, it wasn't a success that broke the streak.

Yeah this solution doesnt work. Same story as the allslayer. Went multiple runs cancelling everything. Finally on stage 7 or 8 i actually failed 5 in a row and it popped. Failed every single egg after in that game.

Description and unlock requirements have changed so it obviously doesnt work anymore.

Even though you need 5 fails in a row you should still cancel every chance you get so you have a heftier egg reserve.
I was able to pop it using a normal character (Ming has increased egg success rate as a passive) and the free item that lets you cancel egg spawns. ( it is in tree 5)

Right, just unlocked this with the Ming strat, and I think NOTH was onto something, but it wasn't like, y'know, completely accurate.

Basically, any egg you have that's guaranteed to hatch? Cancel that bad boy, and then just let confirmed failed hatches come through. I think you can still cancel them, which is what I was doing on instinct, but letting them just pop up as an actual failed hatch worked.

This works fine. Just use ming and cancel any hatchable eggs. Don't cancel the failed ones. Easy

Tested with the Rainbow gun i found on the first floor and carried until the 8th. There were dozens of unopened eggs behind me and no achievement popped so this is definitely not an option

I also noticed the achievement description showing 5 eggs, just before making a run at this. I was on 11 when my game was interrupted by an update. After the update, I got to 10 before losing focus and hatching an egg. Still don't have the achievement. Seems like it's still not counting properly.

Edit: Just got this with 26 failed eggs (v1.1.13_105)

Posting updated guide for sad eggs achievement:

Using Ming I cancelled all egg hatches till I had a decent supply (I probably had about 20 before going for achievement). I must have had an item or maybe at a certain point in the game I noticed every time you jump with ming and land, his ability shows you what will hatch next. Just jump / land so that an empty egg is next to hatch and when you clear a room of all enemies the empty egg should pop. If you have to jump to avoid enemies then don't kill the last one until you set the next hatch to be an empty egg.

Do not use the cancel hatch ability anymore, instead just make sure you cycle the next egg to be an empty one 5 times and achievement will pop.

Just need confirmation on what item or ability was causing the eggs to cycle what the next egg was going to hatch into

Update 1.4.6 - Owl Headdress way

Character: Ming
Item: Owl Headdress

Use Character Ming. Not only can Ming interrupt hatching, but Ming can also view the next upcoming hatch.

This works great with Owl Headdress, as simply jumping will shuffle the next egg outcome.

Defeat all but one monster in a room, jump until your next hatch is a dud and then kill said monster. Bingo bongo, you've just finished a failed hatch. Repeat 5 times for the achievement

(Important Note! Cancelling hatching will reset your achievement counter, so you might wanna avoid that unless you have the wrong hatch coming up)

After obtaining an egg and then clearing a set number of combat rooms with it, it'll eventually hatch. Based completely off RNG, the egg will either produce a little pet that'll assist you in a some way during each room, or it'll fail and you'll get nothing. As you may surmise from these two achievements, they can rely entirely on RNG, hoping that you get five of each possibility in a row. This is completely plausible to happen throughout your time with this game and working on all other achievements. In fact, it is how I got both achievements. However, there are ways to improve odds or guarantee both achievements.

For hatching 5 in a row successfully, you can play as Ming, the final character you'll be able to unlock. Ming has a passive ability that all eggs have an increased chance to hatch successfully, which increases the likelihood of unlocking this achievement.  To guarantee this achievement, be lucky enough to find the Marshmallow item. This makes all eggs hatch successfully as long as your hearts are full. If playing on Easy, this is pretty easy to maintain to ensure all your eggs hatch successfully. If you mess up, you can always use the Save Reload Exploit to try again.

To guarantee the 5 failed hatches in a row, again use Ming. He has the ability to press button-b.png when an egg is hatching to cancel its hatch. Use this to ensure you fail five in a row.
