How to unlock the Man of Steal achievement in Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch - Definitive Guide

This trophy is only available after Swaine joins your party (which occurs during your first visit to Castaway Cove), but it's pretty easy to get once you have him.

Once you have him, then all you have to do is take control of him during battle (using L1 to select him), navigate to his Trickshot abilities, select Mugshot and choose your target. It's a low 1 MP ability that's available as soon as you have Swaine, so no worries about it eating up a bunch of precious MP.

If the Mugshot is successful, you get a notification immediately telling you what item you got... and you're 1/50th of the way to the trophy.

In my experience so far, I've found that:
a) You can only steal one item per enemy (please correct me if I'm wrong)
b) Your best chance to steal is after the enemy has been wounded. I never had any luck stealing from a full health enemy
c) Be mindful of your team members' tactics and/or how quickly they're beating down your target. Because the Mugshot animation takes a few seconds to kick off, by the time Swaine fires, the enemy may have just been defeated by your team and you get no item.

You don't have to switch to play as Swaine to receive this trophy. He will use Mugshot occasionally on his own in battles. I received it within a few hours of gameplay after Swaine joined my party.
If you let him Mugshot on his own you don't have to worry about timing his shot, etc.

Once Swaine joins your party, his first ability, Mugshot, lets you steal from enemies. Just keep using this and you'll have your trophy in no time. You'll be doing a lot of stealing during mid/endgame for materials, so there's no need to grind it right away. If you're having trouble with your teammates killing things before you can steal, switch to All-Out Defense with while you steal.

During the battle, make Swaine the main character and select his ability to steal. After pulling out 50 items from monsters, we get a trophy. During a battle you can steal 2-3-4 items depending on the number of opponents.

You don't have to play as Swain. I got the trophy without ever stealing personally. AI steals - you get the trophy

Swaine also steals weapons and various useful gear in the battle with bosses (this does not apply to the nightmares that we kill in order to cleanse the hearts of the characters from various vices; there is also no item in the final battle with the Zodiarchs).

Do not rush to get this trophy, as you will receive it automatically when performing thefts to craft 120 items.
