How to unlock the Forging Master achievement in NieR - Definitive Guide

This is the Forging Master achievment. You must upgrade all 30 weapons to level 4 to obtain this achievement. Be forewarned: this achievement is a crime against humanity.

Here is how it is done. It is the most time consuming achievement in the game. If the forging achievements are the very last achievements you work on, even after your third playthrough without rushing the game (meaning you bothered to stop and gather and maybe farm a bit) expect getting 15 and 30 weapons forged to take 20-30 hours for these two achievements. This is not an exaggeration. After watching ending B and starting your next playthrough, equip your best +droprate word on all your weapons and spells, if not even earlier. XP quickly becomes irrelevant, but drops are a huge pain in the ass.

The best droprate increasing word is available from the armored sword enemies in the area recommended to farm forlorn necklaces apparently (on top of the lost temple (may need to have all the key fragments, unsure)). The word gives you items +30% which will help on your hunt for the necklace. (To be honest I only ever found Mahizarr (+25% droprate) and I don't remember what enemy yielded it. I know I had it by the end of my second playthrough.)) I suspect the 30% word is Mahizarken, but did a lot of checking and the above description was the only even vague lead on where to acquire it I found.

First off, if you want to prioritize your weapon upgrading on the basis of effectiveness of the weapon, this is my advice on that:

The best weapon, IMO, is the phoenix spear. A good alternative in tight quarters with huge swarms of tiny enemies is something like the phoenix dagger or, since the materials to fully upgrade the phoenix dagger are rough, the ancient overlord is probably the second best one-handed sword.

Two-handed swords are not generally useful, but there is one way under certain circumstances to effectively use them: If you come upon a heavily armored shade, jump above him with your strongest 2h sword- speed is irrelevant here (the strongest period is the DLC 2h sword- 999atk power fully upgraded and smolders with sparks of fire, very cool looking, but it is also of course a 2h sword (inherently slower than any other weapons, even if they say "light" they swing MUCH slower than a spear or 1h sword that is "light") and its weight catagory is "very heavy", so not practical for general use). anyway, jump above a heavily armored enemy and hit Y (special attack) to do the helm smash attack where you slam downwards with your sword and then immediately roll out out of it to cancel the recovery time (the roll is important). This will smash down through the enemy from top to bottom doing devastating damage and destroying the majority of their armor if it doesnt kill them outright. Rinse and repeat if you find a situation where heavily armored enemies are giving you any trouble.

Alternatively, you could just charge up dark whirlwind and walk into them with that to destroy their armor while stabbing wtih a spear. Hell, even if an armored enemy is blocking, using no magic at all, I can stab once with a spear and they will parry and stagger, then stab again to heavily damage them or lunge to kill them straight up, or just follow up with a third jab and that kills most any regular enemy. With a fully upgraded phoenix spear I kill the large shades in the lost temple at the end of the game instantly with one spear lunge (Y attack), for reference.

DLC weapons do not count toward this achievement.

The basic material and weapon upgrade component list is typed up from the BRADYGAMES guide by this fellow and the original version is formatted nicer, but I've added a TON of more specific details on item locations and farming methods on this solution post.
original base version:
http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/nier/48567-weapon-raw-mater...
However, like i said: here on this post I added in quite a lot of notes in certain areas for clarification and further gathering strategies not included in the linked guide from both personal experience and a lot of research online.

Nier: Weapon & Raw Material FAQ
by: Dedemaru - NOTE HE DID NOT CREATE THIS, HE ONLY TYPED IT UP FROM THE BRADYGAMES GUIDE

The purpose of the FAQ is to help people upgrade all of their weapons. As you may know, there are three weapon types: One-handed swords, Two-handed swords and Spears. You can upgrade you're weapons at "Two Brothers Weaponry" in the Junk Heap. Each individual weapon upgrade costs 1,000 gold and a large quantity of materials. Some materials are more rare than others. The first half of this guide will tell you all of the material types you'll require and how many of each item. Nier has a lot of random crap in it. I made this guide so people can decide what raw materials to keep, how many, and what to sell for profit. The categories I have each materials listed in do not exist in the game. They were created by me for organization. I will eventually be adding as many item locations as possible. Though most stuff is random, some things can be found in certain places.

The second half of this guide will tell you the name of each weapon, the materials needed to upgrade it (and their quantities), and eventually the weapons locations (when I finish the game).

NOTE: I'd like to include that words like "mahes", "mahira", etc. increase the item drop rate percentage. With words like those on your primary weapons or magic, you can increase the rate of finding some of these harder to find materials.

Please enjoy. Respond with any questions, comments or corrections.

Alloys
Titanium Alloy (24/Rare)
Junk Heap: Projectile Drones, P-33 Drones, DLC part 3 crates
Memory Alloy (8/Rare) (Don't turn in a memory alloy to the guy in the village for part 2 sidequest by the pigs. he just rewards you with money, and if your luck is anything like mine, these will be a bit of a pain to come by. I think I ran the entire junkheap 6 times in a row without getting a single memory alloy at one point)
Junk Heap: P-33 Drones

Ores (note: if you do man of means (1million gold in pocket) before this achievement, you can easily purchase any ores you are missing besides gold of course, as you need quite a lot of iron. it would be silly to farm it from gathering spots)
Iron Ore (163)
Gather Spots, Two Brother's Weaponry (1000G)
Copper Ore (88)
Gather Spots, Two Brother's Weaponry (480G)
Silver Ore (121)
Gather Spots, Two Brother's Weaponry (1500G)
Gold Ore (20/Rare)
Gather Spots

Jewels/Gems/Pearls
Amber (6/Rare)
Junk Heap: Boxes, Facade Materials (6000G)
Pyrite (14/Rare)
Barren Temple: Gather Spots, Junk Heap: Boxes (almost never spawns in junk heap - zone into barren temple, check the 3 spawns (one at the bottom of the first left stairway, and at the end of the room to the left and right) and check any that are up, then zone out and back in and repeat. this is the fastest way to get pyrite. I got extremely lucky and managed to get 8 in about an hour and a half on my second session here. I also picked up 1 pyrite in the third section of the DLC on one of my 4 clears of it. this is not efficient but I thought I'd include it as a note.)
Crystal (8/Rare)
Barren Temple: Gather Spots, Facade Materials (2400G)
Moldavite (8/Rare)
Desert: Gather Spots, Seafront Materials (5000G)
Flourite (18/Rare)
Barren Temple: Gather Spots, Junk Heap: Boxes
Meteorite (5/Rare)
The Aerie/Desert/Barren Temple: Gather Spots
Pearl (1)
Seafront: Gather Spots, Seafront Materials (3000G)
Black Pearl (15/Rare)
Seafront: Gather Spots (both beaches) - save your game at the seafront mailbox, check the small beach, then the beach with the seals- if you dont find any black pearls immediately reload from the mailbox and try again. if you do find one, save at the mailbox then reload that save immediately to reset the gather points. this works with any gather point.

Machine Parts
Simple Machine (6/Rare)
Dropped: Most larger Shades (best place to farm large shades is the lost temple after collecting all 5 key fragments. climb the tower until you spawn and kill the second large shade on your way up, then jump back down to the bottom, zone out and back in, and climb back up killing both large shades, jump down- repeat as necessary)
Complex Machine (8/Rare)
Dropped: Most larger Shades (see Simple Machine)
Elaborate Machine (5/Rare)
Dropped: Most larger Shades (see Simple Machine)
Machine Oil (5/Rare)
Junk Heap B2: Floating Drones
Stripped Bolt (10)
Junk Heap: Projectile Drones, Two Brother's Weaponry (900G)
Large Gear (6/Rare)
Junk Heap: Ground Robot Drones (gold ones I believe)

Jewelry
Forlorn Necklace (4/Rare)
Dropped: Shaman Shades (any human sized caster shade. armored or not. one spot you can spawn them repeatedly is the top of the lost temple in part 2 by entering the doorway to the first boss room and exiting, killing both, then zoning in and out of the door to reset them. it's a very rare drop, but like I said, it really can obtained from any human sized caster shade. I got one from the non-armored ones in the northern plains in part 2. the armored ones may have a better drop rate, but it's almost impossible to confirm this.)
Subdued Bracelet (3/Rare)
Dropped: Flying Shades (this can be one of the worst farms in the game. after getting the loyal cerberus key fragment, there are 3 places in the desert when you walk over them, near smaller shades, where armored flying shades will erupt out of the ground. if you are quick, you can stab the two that come out of the ground before they take off and instakill them with a spear lunge. If they take flight, I would use dark phantasm and then tag them with a dark blast shot to finish them off as they are very agile and dark phantasm cannot miss unless they're beyond your radius. make sure you have a mahzarr or another drop word on all your spells just like on all your weapons. zone in and out of the area to reset the spawn, although there are times when it will not trigger the reset. you have to walk over very specific spots to make them spawn, and the one in the sandstorm only spawns if you approach from facade, not coming from the barren temple. Posted a youtube video at the bottom that shows the exact method and locations of these shades.)
Twisted Ring (5/Rare)
Dropped: Armored Shades, Sword Shades

Animal Parts & Natural Ingredients
Scorpion Claw (10)
Dropped: Scorpions
Giant Egg (6/Rare)
Village: Gather Spots
Eagle Egg (4/Rare)
The Aerie: Gather Spots (NOW AVAILABLE IN THE THIRD GAUNTLET SECTION OF THE DLC AS WELL- more details at the bottom. eagle eggs are god. awful. to farm. running the third section of the DLC I got 1 eagle egg on 2 out of 4 runs from the bridge filled with crates. you can die in the next room and get punted back outside to your house and you hold on to all your materials. the rare items from boxes really end at that bridge. the only reason to fully complete that section is if you really want the 50k gold or still need the costume/weapon reward for completing the 3rd part at least once.)
Clay (18)
Gather Spots, Facade Materials (800G)
Natural Rubber (1)
Southern Plains: Gather Spots, Seafront Materials (700G)

Broken Items
Broken Arm (49)
Junk Heap: Standard Drones, Projectile Drones
Broken Saw (4/Rare)
Dropped: Small Shades
Broken Lens (5)
Junk Heap: Standard Drones
Broken Battery (5)
Junk Heap: Floating Drones
Broken Antenna (37)
Junk Heap: Standard Drones, Projectile Drones
Broken Pottery (2/Rare)
Northern Plains/The Aerie: Gather Spots
Broken Motor (11)
Junk Heap: Projectile Drone, Floating Drone
Broken Wristwatch (11/Rare)
Dropped: Shielded Shades, Heavily-Armored Shades
Broken Earring (4/Rare)
Dropped: Shaman Shade (human sized casters- armored or not)

Rusted Items
Rusty Kitchen Knife (11/Rare)
Dropped: Small Sword Shades, Small Axe Shades (in part 2, the southern road between seafront and the village can have spawns of these. it's either spawns of the little guys with round hats or just tons of big club/shield full armored shades. if you see the club/armor shades and are there for kitchen knives, just zone back in and out of seafront/village until you don't see them- then just walk around and the small shades will spawn instead- it's basically just two different modes of spawns for that area that are random when you go in)
Rusty Bucket (10)
Found Fishing
Rusted Clump (12)
Found Fishing

Random Materials
Dented Metal Bat (21/Rare)
Dropped: Small Shades (best place for this is in the laboratory under emil's mansion. as you zone down the stairs to the second floor, one room ahead will spawn about 50 of the tiny shades that drop these. kill all of them, then go back up the stairs and down the stairs, then kill them all again. you should have all your bats in no-time)
Metal Piercing (4/Rare)
Dropped: Flying Shades, Armored Flying Shades (you will easily get these while going for the subdued bracelets). The only places these are really found are in 3 spots in the desert after obtaining the loyal cerberus key and inside the shadowlords castle after passing the point of no return. I will post a youtube video showing exactly how to farm these effectively shortly, so you know exactly where you need to stand to make them pop out of the sand.
Mysterious Switch (9)
Junk Heap: Projectile Drones
Stopped Clock (3/Rare)
Dropped: Sword Shades

Weapon FAQ
-also posted by Dedemaru AKA BRADYGAMES plagiarizer (apparently), but at least he was nice enough to type it out for everyone else. props for that.

Aside from a some of the first weapons in the game, most weapons can either be bought at the Blacksmith, found in a box in a dungeon or given to you by nobility. The most expensive weapon is around 32,000 gold. Not too bad. Here is a list of the games thirty weapons, where to find them and how to upgrade them.

NOTE: Most of the weapons can't really be missed. If you forget to pick up a weapon or just flat out miss one, don't fret. Almost all weapons are for sale in the second half of the game. Just look around at the different blacksmiths.

Update: all 3 DLC weapons take 1 damascus steel per level to forge, although they are not counted for this achievement. the best place to farm damascus item is in the DLC gauntlets. I've also picked up some from crates in b2 of the junk heap.

Some materials can be gathered more efficiently by performing the 'load trick'. This trick exploits the fact that loading the game is faster than zoning in and out of an area, and it also resets all harvest points. Below is an example for getting Eagle Eggs:

-Save game in the Aerie
-Walk down the lower bridge until you get to the middle circular platform section, turn around and look directly at the eagle egg spawn point which is just to the left of the left house below the mayor's house. double jump to verify if its there or not.
-If the harvest point doesn't exist, load your game and try again.

-If the harvest point exists (is flashing), walk over to the gathering point, harvest and cross your fingers.
-If its not the eagle egg, load your game and try again.
-If it is the eagle egg, go save your game and load again until you find as many as you need.

(personal note from Rastal: even using this method, expect to repeat this for hours to gather the 4 eagle eggs you need. this achievement is a beast.)

!!! (Update from Rastal: the may 12th DLC has eagle eggs in the third section of it that I got 2 out of the 4 times I fought through that final section- you can even die out after you pick them up or go through the crates and fail to spawn one and just get punted back outside in your house, but you'll retain all the items you picked up. The first 2 sections dont really have any key drops, but the third section you'll get lots of titanium and likely damascus and 50k gold and 10k(?) xp for finishing the entire thing. The last enemy, on easy, smashed me with his arm knocking me 60 feet backwards and taking off about 70% of my lifebar at level 40. As long as you avoid that and just kindve stay behind him he isnt so bad. the enemies do not mess around in the DLC. (where I got the 2 eagle eggs I found was on the metal bridge leading to a circular room... the bridge has crates all over it. the DLC is basically like playing the game on mind altering drugs and fighting stuff way more brutal than anything in the main game. it's not very long, and I didn't know what to expect going into it, but now, even without it directly having any achievements, it was worth the money for the fun it provides. the different armor models you can choose are interesting and also change the rest of your party members armor, and also uh,.... there's an option to turn all the red orb projectiles into emil's head. I'm not even kidding. i just dont know what to say about that. the music turns into hybrids of the original beautiful music and techno/trance remixes... it's kinda awesome, but just the whole DLC is freakin WTF. when he said his wife went crazy in the later diary entries you "experience" he was not making an understatement.)

Re: The Below Video for Subdued Bracelet/Metal Piercing Farming

I didn't personally record this video, but it shows exactly where the shades spawn. He gets a bracelet on his run so he returns and saves, but, if after killing the third shade you have gotten nothing from them you need from any of them then just immediately reload to the mailbox in facade to save time.

If you learn the exact spot the shades pop out of you can lunge with a spear you can easily 1-shot kill the first two he pops in the video right as they are coming out of the ground once you memorize their spots. I dont know why he was using the phoenix dagger as it is hard to kill them before they take off using a sword except for the fact that level 4 phoenix dagger gives +80% magic boost and magic is the nearly the only way to kill them once they take flight. Level 4 Phoenix spear offers the same magic boost however, and at least half the time, probably more, you will be relying on dark phantasm/dark blast to finish off these frisky flying bastards.

Sometimes randomly when you zone into the desert no enemies of any kind will be up. If you notice the first few shades/scorpions missing then just go back and zone in and out of the door to facade and that should spawn everything.

Wow! Very thorough, I appreciate the effort!

I suppose I will have to spend this weekend farming weapon components. I'll let you know if I find anything else worth noting, or if I have trouble with anything.

Thumbs up!

You'v listed broken egg as an item needed for an upgrade, but not said how to get it?

Aha, thank you for pointing that out. After some checking I found out that was an error and supposed to have been "broken earring x2." No broken eggs are needed. Will correct it. :)

the main thing is collecting tons and tons of materials. as soon as you feel like enemies are no longer much challenge, equip your best +drop rate words on all your spells and weapons. actually forging the weapons can be done at any time, but if you happen to get lucky with some rare drops due to +drop rate words before you finish your playthroughs it can potentially save you a good deal of time.

I spent hours farming for the bracelets using the 30% loot drop word but nothing. I then got all three within 30 minutes by knocking the flying shade down to the sand using Dark Lance and then using the Finisher move on them! Maybe it's the trick or maybe not but it worked wonders for me.

yeah I would say "if it doesn't drop in 2 more hours I'm taking a break"... 2hrs later "ok I'll try for 30 more minutes"...30min later: "i want to die"
this achievement sucked. using the finisher is a fine possibility... anything that might increase the chance.

Excellent guide!

After reading some comments, are all/most/some items more likely to spawn at a certain difficulty? JW if items like the elaborate, simple, complex machines spawn more frequently from an enemy type or a difficulty setting.

Thanks for putting all the info together! Just a few items left!

The two shaman shades in the lost temple part 2, is this the first time you go there when starting a new game, or at the end?

Rusty Kitchen Knives - Once you get near the end of the game, a lady in the Myth Forest has a quest for you called 'The Magic Stone' or something like that. Once you complete that quest, talk to her again and you'll enter the dream. I got all Knives pretty quick here (within an hour). This place can also be used for a couple other materials but i forgot.

When you are grinding for the Eagle Eggs, it's also a decent time to get Broken Pottery, Moldavite, Meteorite, and Gold Ore. There's 2 gather spots right by the save box and then a further 3 back in he corridor/Kaine's hut area. I'm currently grinding it out and have gotten almost all the Gold Ore that I need.

There is also a much, much easier spot for collecting Simple/Complex/probably Elaborate Machines.

In the Barren Temple, there's one room towards the top of the map, that lists its condition as "Evasive Mouse". One of those big shades with two swords spawns in there and some other sword shades. Hit it with about 5-6 Dark Lances and collect a Rare drop. Hit the Right Trigger to Evade and the room resets. However, you keep the drop that you picked up.

I haven't gotten an Elaborate Machine drop on it yet, but I have gotten a Simple or Complex on every defeat of the beastie. Much easier than running up stairs.

Yeah I done the same thing as Rhyolitic except I was getting several Elaborate machines and hardly any simple. Definitely the best spot for it. Great guide though, absolute brilliant

Using the Shadows of the Desert quest to farm subdued bracelets only works if you completed the Missing Girl quest in the first half of the game. If you are still having trouble farming the Subdued Bracelet try increasing the difficulty. I wasn't getting anything on Easy and I changed to hard and got 2 in 30 minutes.

Memory Alloy farming can be made easier. Set your difficulty to hard, go to a P-33 spawn, kill it, if you get Titanium Alloy then die because you will respawn just before you went in giving you a chance to kill it again. Keep dying until you get Memory Alloy and then move to the next spawn. Each spawn has a checkpoint so you will keep your previous Memory Alloy. Just make sure you don't die before you get to the next spawn. You could get three alloys per run this way and save a lot of time running through all of level B2.

If you have problem with finding Giant Eggs, use your Dark Hand on the chicken (the one near the house) and then check all the gather spots in the Village (I found 2 eggs one by one near the water wheel and one on the right hand side after leaving the house backyard).

why didnt no one on ta suggest suicide farming for the eagle egg jump into the void and you respawn on the bridge before the ladder to the mayor house, and just jump to death if the harvest point isnt there

This guide was ridiculously helpful, thank you so much for posting it. I printed this off, followed it to the letter, and it paid off after about 25 hours of farming. The subdued bracelet video on youtube was also incredibly helpful, and kept me sane after grinding for 4 1/2 hours to find all three. Thumbs up man

Excellent, excellent guide. The only improvement I'd suggest is some formatting; bold, underline, or italics could really help readers parse the wealth of information you've provided.

Is there a point that this becomes unachievable on a save? I am going back to the game after a few years, and was wondering if theres a point where I would need to start again to be able to get everything?

Mike yes - if you don't get all weapons in part 1 this is unachievable

Personally, I strongly suggest getting the The World of Recycled Vessel DLC for this achievement. In the interest of time and optimization for obtaining some materials, you'll want to grind in a manner that yields the most efficient results. Purchase the DLC for $7, approach the sparkle point (diary) in NieR's house, press cn_B, and complete the first 2 nightmare trial doors. This will unlock the third and final nightmare door (right one) which is the one you want to use for farming a fair portion of the required materials.

Each time you clear all 5 trials of the third door you'll be awarded with 10,000 XP and 50,000 gil. With that, you have the option to farm money from this DLC mission to purchase the 122 Silver Ores/199 Iron Ores needed from the Gideon brother at the Junk Heap. Most importantly, once you reach the third trial area of that door, the crates there yield a plethora of materials that are mandatory for this achievement including: Pyrite, Moldavite, Meteorite, Titanium Alloy, Crystal, Amber, Rusted Clump, Gold Ores, Iron Ores, Copper Ores, and the super rare: Eagle Egg.

Destroy all the crates up to the end of the bridge, pick up all the dropped materials, then jump off the bridge repeatedly until you die. Choose "Yes" to save and you'll be taken back to your home. You'll still keep all of the materials you gained and it only takes around 5 minutes to get to the section and farm again. However, each time you're booted back to NieR's home, use this opportunity to search the harvest points outside the village for Giant Eggs; you'll need 6 total. Then head back to NieR's home, interact with the diary (sparkle point) again and repeat the process. It's very productive and while the Eagle Egg is super rare, it IS a possible drop and you can pick up a significant amount of other materials you'll need along the way until you finally DO get the necessary total of 3-4 Eagle Eggs as drops.

Now granted, this farming method does not account for all materials you'll need but it's a nice way to start. You'll still need to farm 15 black pearls at seafront, 21 Dented Metal Bats at Haunted Mansion, etc. but it can potentially minimize the amount of time needed farming the materials. Actually, as popularly noted, you DO NOT need to worry about earning 1 million gil for the Man of Means achievement. Once you have all the materials you need, you can simply save, sell all your collected materials, pop the achievement, then reload your save to get them back. Then you can upgrade the 30 weapons. True, the DLC is not needed to complete the game at all. Regardless, with or without the DLC you'll be spending 20 hours or more farming materials all throughout the game but I felt the item drops and rewards from the trial missions made a difference in the end.

With the game now recently becoming backwards compatible, the DLC can be downloaded from the Xbox One / Series X marketplace as an add-on or, for Xbox 360 owners, by visiting the link below:

No problem... er... well... I guess I did spend a good deal of time over about a week tracking down various farming techniques and locations so I guess it was kindve a problem LOL. Actually getting all the stuff you need though... good god. This achievement alone takes as long to get as all the other achievements in the game combined. I loved Nier, but as achievements that turn into chores go, this one is HORRIBLE and normally I really enjoy collection achievements. I only advise going after this is you have basically unlimited freetime and are obsessed with completions. This achievement becomes "not fun" after a couple hours, and then there are another 20 more hours of it. You make the call.

*** 2018 Update ***
Nothing really new, but a few tricks, tips, and word locations (where I found them) to add to this AMAZING guide to make this grind a little bit smoother. Hopefully...

Mahzarr +25% Item Drop Rate - Desert area, the 3 little shade cluster right outside Facade dropped. Character was level 37.

Mahzarken +30% Item Drop Rate - Lost Shrine, 2nd level (ceiling outside), while farming for Forlorn Necklace. Dropped off the sword shade, the one with 3 bronze shields as a chest plate. Character was level 39.

Ladders.... Slow. Continually jumping up a ladder by smashing the “A” Button will make ladder climb half of what it normally is vs just climbing up with the “Up” joystick. EXTREMELY useful when farming for Eagle Eggs and Forlorn Necklaces. Or general play usage.

Eagle Egg grind... Speaking of, happened to be short on Gold Ore near the end of my farming, but picked up a lot of it from this one node spot. So if you get an Eagle Egg -or- Gold Ore, it’s worth the trip for a save or was for me anyways.

SUBDUED BRACELET - Bonkers. Spent 3 hours farming in the desert on Easy for nothing. Then switched to Hard on the main menu screen before loading a save and they all 3 dropped in an hour. Hard makes the floating shades a lot more “fun” to kill, but worth it for the extra drop rate IMO.

Side note - Farming and hoarding all these materials makes the 1,000,000 Gold Achievement super easy. Especially after farming the white flower, doing 30 quest, and getting your fishing done. Make a save, sell everything or at least what’s needed to hit 1 mil, and reload. You will be a reloading pro by the end of this ;)

Last thoughts, this is one of *THE WORST* achievements I’ve ever completed. Don’t get me wrong, love a good grind- But having a 20g achievement that takes longer to grind on its own than all the other 980g combined is asinine. Especially when more than half that time is spent in loading screens either loading, reloading, zoning, rezoning, reloading to rezone to reload to rezone. Hope you have a good Netflix series or three to ease the pain ;) GOOD LUCK!

A+++ guide. Couldn’t have done it otherwise. THANK YOU!

Small tip on the Subdued Bracelet farming: There is a quest in the dessert that have potential to reduce the time spend on this horrible grind. Pretty sure it's only available after you have gotten the loyal cerberus key fragment/ main story wolf quest. The quest giver is at the stairs to the boat (well think it was there anyway, its in the desert map that's not effected by the storm, so you'll find it easy enough). The quest works this way you talk to the women once, then enter the town Facade, then go out in the dessert again, find her again, now she is closer to Facade, enter Facade again, make a save, leave and now she is at the city gate. She turns out to be a flying shade and she brings more shade in the following fight. 4 flying shades is normal in this fight. If you haven't gotten 1 Subdued Bracelet (or even 2 – if that then you are a lucky bastard for sure), then reload the save from facade, when the big shade appear in the end, and try again. The quest is called “Shadows of the dessert” and will net you 30k as well.

Depending on how lucky you are, this can reduce the time spend a little. I got 1 Subdued Bracelet within 35 minutes, compared to only 1 from the 3 flying shades dessert run in around 5 hours. Still missing one, grrr.

Many thanks rastal66 for this guide and all your other guides on Nier. Don't know what I would have done with out them.

*NOTE: this is not a guide telling you all the materials you need for all the upgrades or on where to get them*
this is a guide informing you on the fastest method on getting the dreadfull eagle eggs I literally got all 4 eagle eggs in less than an hour (this really all depends on luck but it is faster than normal methods) I literally got 2 in a row!
step 1. go to the aerie and save at the post box... its really hard to miss.
step 2. go to the first giant platform and jump in the air to where you can at least see the shine where it usually is.
step 3 A. if it is not there then simply go into the options and load game.
step 3 B. if it is there then painfully run up there and collect it. if it is the unrealistic weapon fortification item then save and repeat. also save if you need the random item it gives you. if it is not the item you need then load game.
P.S. the items I have noticed that only spawn in this area is meteorite, iron, copper, silver, and gold ores, broken pottery, clay (this annoyingly shows up the most), and the eagle egg.

This will be the longest part of your 100% attempt as grinding out the items required for this may take a lot of time, especially if you get bad luck with the drops.

First of all you'll need to have collected all the weapons first (I may get around to adding a solution for that too) then you'll need to visit the Junk Yard, this is where you can upgrade weapons by trading resources you've gathered and a little bit of gold.

Each weapon can be upgrade up to level 4 and will require various different resources, some incredibly rare (this is where equipping words that increase drop rate come in handy!) so here's a list of everything you need, items with high number requirements may not be completely accurate because I had more than I needed.

So in alphabetical order (press Ctrl+F to find a resource quickly):

Amber (6) - You won't need to worry too much about Amber as they are fairly commonly found in crates, one set of crates in B2 of the Junk Yard (the one with all the holes in the floor) will probably net you 2 or 3 per run, and you'll be doing more than that for the rarer drops.

Black Pearl (15) - These are found in Seafronts gathering locations on the beach, they're easy to farm by saving at the postbox, loading the save and running in a small circle through the beaches, once you reach the end if you don't get a Black Pearl reload your save, if you do get one walk back and save. I hear some people took a lot of time with this one but for me it was one of the quicker gathering spots so don't worry about these.

Broken Antenna (Around 40) - VERY common drop in the Junk Yard, you'll be getting 99 of these often...

Broken Arm (Around 50) - Fairly common from the silver coloured zappy robots on the ground in Junk Yard, may take longer than other common items but you'll get this long before you're done farming here.

Broken Battery (5) - Moderately common from the robots that can fly inside Junk Yard, they may not be the main drop but they drop more than enough for you to get 5.

Broken Earring (4) - Pretty common drop from magic casting shades found in the plains and shrine, will most likely have way more than this while farming Forlorn Necklaces.

Broken Motor (Between 10-20) - Another drop for the robots that fly around, again these will be earned naturally.

Broken Saw (4 or 5) - Once you complete a quest that gives you access to the Prologue scene you'll be able to farm many items quickly there, this will come quickly from the masses of small shades that spawn in this sequence, I had over 20.

Broken Wristwatch (11) - Similarly to Saws above, these are quickly found in the Prologue sequence, whilst they appeared less for me they didn't take long at all, I recall they drop from either the armoured shades or shades with swords, doesn't matter which as they both spawn a lot in prologue.

Clay (Less than 20?) - So common you'll never need to worry but if you're short you can buy them 800 gold each in Facade.

Complex Machines (8) - Drops from big shades that have health bars at the bottom of the screen like mini - bosses, a great way to farm these are in the Barren Temple because you can go to the room that doesn't allow you to use magic, kill this big shade and use magic to reset the room and respawn him! If you've locked yourself out of this by finishing quests you can see these bosses while climbing the Shrine.

Copper Ore (Almost 99) - Just buy these in the Junk Yard after you've finished farming everything else, only 480 gold each. You'll find a few randomly as you check gathering spots for other items.

Crystal (Around 10) - Just buy any extras you need of these in Facade for 2400 gold each, you'll get a bunch of these when gathering other items.

Dented Metal Bat (20-25) - Another item found in the Prologue sequence, may be the last item you need there because the armoured small shades that drop these regularly aren't always there every time and you need over 20 of these.

Eagle Egg (4) - HAVE FUN! By far the worst item to farm, took one entire game session for me to get 3 of these... You need to do this before you destroy Aerie because it's gathered there. It will be found after climbing to the top, crossing to the other side and dropping down, this spot RARELY spawns as an Eagle Egg so be prepared to be reloading your save... alot, you'll be able to see this spot glittering before climbing up if you jump while on the first platform, do this so you can reload quicker and save time... Prepare for hell... Just remember to go back and save after you get one, last thing you want to do is load your old save and lose one :P

Elaborate Machine (5) - Drops from big shades that have health bars at the bottom of the screen like mini - bosses, a great way to farm these are in the Barren Temple because you can go to the room that doesn't allow you to use magic, kill this big shade and use magic to reset the room and respawn him! If you've locked yourself out of this by finishing quests you can see these bosses while climbing the Shrine.

Flourite (Around 20) - This can be found in 2 main locations, the first being gathering spots in the Barren Temple which you'll be farming anyway and the second being the crates in the room with holes in B2 Junk Yard (my preferred way to farm them), leave these towards the end as you'll probably get them while farming something else.

Forlorn Necklace (4) - Found on magic casting shades, these are in the plains often but the best place to farm is at the top of the Shrine because you can enter and exit the door to respawn them and they're very close to the door. These won't take very long as they drop fairly commonly compared to other rare drops.

Giant Egg (6) - These can be found around the Village gathering spots, personally I find the spots up on the high hill where you kill a shade in a quest seems to spawn them more regularly but that could just be me, gather every time you pass by the village and this'll be done in no time.

Gold Ore (20-25) - At first these seem rare but these will definitely come naturally while gathering other resources at gathering spots, I got 30+ of these during my Eagle Egg farming. You'll also get a bunch in the Barren Temple.

Iron Ore (A few stacks of 99) - Just buy these in the Junk Yard for 1000 each, you'll probably get a lot in gathering spots but don't bother going for these since they're cheap.

Large Gear (6) - This was the last item I needed, not because it's rare but just because I left the Junk Yard until last and this is probably the rarest item to get in there, these will sometimes drop from the silver robots on the ground but you'll rarely get them, just continue going the B2 route until you end up getting enough.

Machine Oil (5) - Supposed to be a rare drop from the flying robots but because you'll fight a lot of them and it's not that rare you'll have plenty to spare.

Memory Alloy (8) - These drop from the big robot mini - bosses in the Junk Yard, you'll find these will come pretty quickly while taking the B2 route as there are 3 close spawns down there after the railcart.

Metal Piercing (4) - Moderately rare drop from the shades that fly in the desert area, these won't spawn until you're basically at the endgame and require you to stand in the right areas of the desert. One is on a small raise of terrain above the stairs by the boat, one is between the dip and raise in terrain by the teleport nearest Facade and the other is easy to spot in the sandstorm dudududu. While spawns are limited and save points are further away these don't take long to drop.

Meteorite (Less than 10) - Easily found in Barren Temple or while farming Eagle Eggs, I had well over 30 in my playthrough so don't worry about these.

Moldavite (Less than 10) - Same as Meteorite, these will be both in the Barren Temple and while Eagle Egg farming. I had around 20 of these in my playthrough. I also remember you can buy them for 5000 each in Seaport but you won't need to, save your money for Ore.

Mysterious Switch (Around 10) - I forget what drops them in the Junk Yard but I had 99 so... Don't worry about these

Natural Rubber (1) - I forgot where I found these but I had 4, they can also be bought in Seafront for only 700 so who cares :P

Pearl (1) - You'll get this when going for Black Pearls, if somehow you haven't for some crazy reason you can just buy it in Seafront for 3000

Pyrite (15) - These will be found in the Barren Temple and may take a while, you can either run through gathering and exit back out to reload all the gathering spots or go to the bridge on the end and keep commuting suicide (game over) to respawn the gathering spots on the bridge, these are fairly common and youll get a lot of Flourite along the way too but getting 15 can be tedious as it takes longer to make them respawn than to collect them.

Rusted Clump (9) - You can fish these in the Desert, you know it'll be something Rusty if the rod dips once and then does a large dip. These aren't too rare and won't take long, you can also catch a couple fish to help with your finances buying Ore.

Rusty Bucket (10) - You can fish these in the Desert, you know it'll be something Rusty if the rod dips once and then does a large dip. These are common and won't take long, you can also catch a couple fish to help with your finances buying Ore.

Rusty Kitchen Knife (10) - Another item found in the Prologue sequence, will drop commonly from smaller shades.

Scorpion Claw (10) - Pretty much 50/50 chance on every Scorpion, loads spawn in the desert indicated by and obvious effect in the sand, just walk up close and then kill it.

Silver Ore (Around a stack and a half of 99) - Don't bother going for these just buy them for 1500 each in the Junk Yard, you'll probably also get a lot as you gather other resources.

Simple Machine (Less than 10) - Drops from big shades that have health bars at the bottom of the screen like mini - bosses, a great way to farm these are in the Barren Temple because you can go to the room that doesn't allow you to use magic, kill this big shade and use magic to reset the room and respawn him! If you've locked yourself out of this by finishing quests you can see these bosses while climbing the Shrine.

Stopped Clock (3) - Don't be alarmed if you have none of these when you start farming, they're quick to farm but only one place really gives you any chance of getting them quickly and you likely rushed passed this in the story and never went back. In the Mansion where you go underground you'll go down to the second floor and at the end before the steps down to the 3rd there will be doors, open the one on the edge just below the steps and you'll see 3 shades with swords, kill them, go down the stairs and go back up and they'll respawn along with 2 of them who stand just outside the door (total of 5), this will take 5 minutes or so, I also got 3 more Stopped Clocks while making my way back to the surface from some that spawn along the way.

Stripped Bolt (Less than 20) - You'll likely have almost 99 of these as well, common drops in the Junk Yard.

Subdued Bracelet (3) - The rarer of the 2 drops from the shades that fly in the desert area, these won't spawn until you're basically at the endgame and require you to stand in the right areas of the desert. One is on a small raise of terrain above the stairs by the boat, one is between the dip and raise in terrain by the teleport nearest Facade and the other is easy to spot in the sandstorm dudududu. While spawns are limited and save points are further away these don't take long to drop although they do take longer than Metal Piercings and you may reach 10 Piercings before you collect 3 of these.

Titanium Alloy (Less than 30) - I had 40+ when I was done in the Junk Yard, almost everything in there has a chance of dropping these even though they're very rare, also the mini - boss robots drop these a lot.

Twisted Ring (Less than 10) - I think these came from the armoured shades you find in the Shrine, pretty common drop, you'll have way more than you need through story progression.

The hardest trophy in the game(read: time consuming), NIER supports custom soundtracks so take advantage of it while grinding! Also equip words from the 'mah' family to your main weapon and magic to increase drop rates from enemies, see Wordsmith for details. Playing on hard also increases the drop rates, although the difference is minimal.

Each weapon can be upgraded up to Level 4 at the Two Brother's Weaponry, located near the Junk Heap. Each upgrade costs 1000 Gold, bar two story related upgrades, in addition to any raw materials required. The grinding process will take your patience to its limits, due to the sheer amount of rare items required. Its easily comparable to Final Fantasy 13's 'Treasure Hunter' trophy, apart from the fact that you get a mere silver for all your hard work. You're in for a long ride, but never give up! See Weapon Upgrading Guide for a list of the amounts of materials required and how to obtain them.

A productive way to earn some of the items would be to play through the three door DLC over and over. Thanks to CookieMcCrumble for the information, which can be found in detail in the first post of the Weapon Upgrading Guide.
