How to unlock the Legendary Gardener achievement in NieR - Definitive Guide
This one takes a bit of work. To get the achievement you must harvest a white moonflower or a white moonflower seed. Here is a guide by Guttsu-87 at ps3trophies.org. it is honestly easier to read in his original format so here is a direct link to the post although it is written for ps3 users ( http://www.ps3trophies.org/forum/nier/48284-nier-trophy-guid... ), but I will quote it in its entirity below, but with alterations for xbox users and a couple corrections.
His guide is obviously written for doing this on a ps3, but it works exactly the same on an xbox. I can confirm this.
Manipulating your Xbox's clock:
In order to make unlocking Legendary Gardener much easier and faster, you need to manipulate your system's clock in order to fool the game into thinking more time has passed than actually has. Because the growth of plants in NIER is directly based on the passage of real-world time, getting the achievment the "fair" way can take ages. Here's what you need to do:
You will need to manipulate the date, and you cannot do this while logged into xbox live, so disconnect from it by unplugging your ethernet cord, signing off xbox live, changing your network settings under "my xbox" bar on the dashboard- however you want to do it, just don't be connected to the internet.
Now, on the Dashboard you can go to console settings or something of that nature(can't quite remember the name), then there will be an option for Date and Time. This is where you can manually adjust the system's clock. Whenever the guide tells you to adjust your clock, come here. Note that when the guide says, for example, set the clock forward 36 hours, you will have to change the date as well as the time.
Cultivating the White Moonflower:
Cultivating is performed in the small field next to Nier's house. There are three rows of fives spaces for planting, for a total of 15 spots. You can plant a variety of things, but for the purposes of this achievement, we will only be discussing flowers. The flower the achievement references is the White Moonflower.
Flowers have five stages:
1. Planting - the seeds have just been planted
2. Growing - the plant is growing
3. Flowering - the plant is flowering
4. Harvesting - the plant is able to be harvested for seeds
5. Dead - the plant is useless
During planting and growing, you may water the plant, which increases the amount of seeds that you receive if you choose to harvest. Also, before planting, you can opt to use fertilizer in order to increase your yield of seeds, but this is not necessary. This part of the guide does not use fertilizer, so after this it will not be mentioned.
There are several steps you must take in order to aqcuire the White Moonflower. This involves placing certain flowers next to others in order to increase the probability of yielding increasingly rarer seeds, which in turn can be planted to yield rarer flowers. Without going into the math, this guide will provide you with the best possible path.
Before we begin, make sure you have met one of the following criteria:
1) Completed both The Shopping List and A Return to Shopping side-quests (during Part One).
-or-
2) Purchased the cultivation handbook from the florist in the village market (during Part Two).
Now, go to the Seafront market. Locate the Grocer, and purchase the following:
9 red moonflower seeds, 6 gold moonflower seeds, and 6 blue moonflower seeds.
Go back to Nier's house.
Using the red and gold seeds, plant in the following pattern:
[Red] [Red] [Red]
[Gold] [Gold] [Gold]
[Red] [Red] [Red]
[Gold] [Gold] [Gold]
[Red] [Red] [Red]
Next, water all of your seeds.
Go to the mailbox and save your game.
Go to the dashboard and set your Xbox clock forward 4 hours.
Load your save.
Water all of your plants.
Go to the mailbox and save your game
Go to the dashboard and set your Xbox clock forward 36 hours.
Load your save.
When you return, all of the plants should be in the harvesting stage. Collect all of the seeds. Hopefully, you get at least 9 peach moonflower seeds. If you do not have at least 9 peach moonflower seeds, but have at least one, see Back Up Plan, below. If you do not have even one peach seed, you must try again from scratch. Sorry.
Now, using the gold and blue seeds, plant in the following pattern:
[Gold] [Gold] [Gold]
[Blue] [Blue] [Blue]
[Gold] [Gold] [Gold]
[Blue] [Blue] [Blue]
[Gold] [Gold] [Gold]
Next, water all of your seeds.
Go to the mailbox and save your game.
Go to the dashboard and set your Xbox clock forward 4 hours.
Load your save.
Water all of your plants.
Go to the mailbox and save your game
Go to the dashboard and set your Xbox clock forward 36 hours.
Load your save.
When you return, all of the plants should be in the harvesting stage. Collect all of the seeds. Hopefully, you get at least 6 indigo moonflower seeds. If you do not have at least 6 indigo moonflower seeds, but have at least one, see Back Up Plan, below. If you do not have even one indigo seed, you must try again from scratch. Sorry.
Now, using the red and indigo seeds, plant in the following pattern:
[Red] [Red] [Red]
[Ing] [Ing] [Ing]
[Red] [Red] [Red]
[Ing] [Ing] [Ing]
[Red] [Red] [Red]
Water all of your seeds.
Go to the mailbox and save your game.
Go to the dashboard bar and set your Xbox clock forward 4 hours.
Load your save.
Water all of your plants.
Go to the mailbox and save your game
Go to the dashboard and set your Xbox clock forward 36 hours.
Load your save.
When you return, all of the plants should be in the harvesting stage. Collect all of the seeds. Hopefully, you get at least 6 pink moonflower seeds. If you do not have at least 6 pink moonflower seeds, but have at least one, see Back Up Plan, below. If you do not have even one pink seed, you must try again from scratch. Sorry.
Next, using the peach and pink seeds, plant in the following pattern:
[Peac] [Peac] [Peac]
[Pink] [Pink] [Pink]
[Peac] [Peac] [Peac]
[Pink] [Pink] [Pink]
[Peac] [Peac] [Peac]
Water all of your seeds.
Go to the mailbox and save your game.
Go to the dashboard and set your Xbox clock forward 4 hours.
Load your save.
Water all of your plants.
Go to the mailbox and save your game
Go to the dashboard and set your Xbox clock forward 36 hours
When you return, all of the plants will be in the harvesting stage. Hopefully, at least one of them is the legendary White Moonflower. It's about a ten percent chance that the White Moonflower will grow under these conditions. Just picking up its seed will pop the achievement.
You should be able to harvest at least one white moonflower seed. This is incredibly useful for getting Man of Means. (Note: I am not convinced this method is faster than using the solution posted under man of means achievement, but it is an option)
Back Up Plan
If something didn't go quite as well as you hoped, don't worry. There is an easy fix. As long as you have one seed of the type you need, all you have to do is plant that seed, harvest it, and then you will have three, four, or possibly five seeds where you only had one before!
You can even use this strategy while you are attempting to harvest other seeds. For example, let's say you have only one peach seed (out of the 9 you need), but you also still need your 6 indigo seeds. Well, then you would plant the seeds you have in the following pattern:
[Gold] [Gold] [Gold]
[Blue] [Blue] [Blue]
[Gold] [Gold] [Gold]
[xxxx] [Blue] [Blue]
[Peac] [Gold] [Gold]
Next, water all of your seeds.
Go to the mailbox and save your game.
Go to the dashboard and set your xbox clock forward 4 hours.
Load your save.
Water all of your plants.
Go to the mailbox and save your game
Go to the dashboard and set your xbox clock forward 36 hours.
Load your save.
When you return, all of the plants should be in the harvesting stage. Collect all of the seeds. Hopefully, you get at least some indigo moonflower seeds, but you will guaranteed get some peach moonflower seeds. Repeat this strategy as needed on your quest for the White Moonflower!

Just an addition really, I'd just like to point out that you don't have to water them twice. Just water after planting and advance the clock 40 hours.
By Vursus on 29 Jul 2010 14:13
this is true, but they yield more seeds if you water them at both stages, which can speed up the process that way. it's really a matter of preference.

*Now pull your head out of your goddamn ass and start fucking helping us!*
Probably the one achievement in NIER people are struggling the most with. I had way too much trouble with other solutions, so here’s a different offer.
To even begin struggling with this achievement you need a few things. First you need three rows of plantable fields outside your house in the Village. Complete two side quests for the florist in the Village;
Shopping List & the follow-up A Return to Shopping:
http://faqs.ign.com/articles/109/1091721p1.html#shopping_lis...
http://faqs.ign.com/articles/109/1091721p1.html#a_return_to_...
These are both available early in the game, during part one. If you missed those during part one, buy the handbook from the Village florist during part two. Next you’ll be needing a few seeds from the grocer in Seafront. Blue, Red, and Gold Moonflower Seeds. 5 of each will do.
Once you’re set up, head back to your patch and let’s start cultivating. Save at the mail box before you do anything. We are going to be manipulating the internal clock and doing this mostly offline. The reason for this? Doing all this online and in real time would take you a month or more of checking in every two days, and we just want the achievement.
Saved and ready, head up the patch and start cultivating the seeds we need to make a White Moonflower. This will require Peach and Pink Moonflower seeds and you have to produce those seeds first. The combinations you need from the base three seeds are:
Blue & Gold = Indigo | Red & Gold = Peach | Indigo & Red = Pink
So we need 3 new types of seeds to begin with. Look at your patch of soil and note that it’s 3 rows of 5 spots. The key to getting the new seeds is at first to plant the above colors next to each other, with one ground rule: the first seed of any type you plant will have zero chance of mixing. Mixing can be done in the same, or across rows. You can either try for one, or both of the new seeds you can make in one go, and we only need one successful mix of each. Going for both, plant them like this, starting from left to right:
[Blue] + [Gold] + [Blue] + [Gold] + [Blue]
---- Nothing in the middle row ----
[Red] + [Gold] + [Red] + [Gold] + [Red]
Following the ground rule, the first Blue and first Red planted will yield nothing, but everything after that will give you plenty chances for a match. Getting the desired seeds at this point is also very likely, so don’t fret over the possibility to plant more connections. Once you have one seed it’s way faster to duplicating it anyway. It’s a good idea to water the plants at this point. The reason being if you don’t, you’ll only produce one seed and having more will save you some time.
Save your game at the mail box and exit to the dashboard. Remove the Ethernet cable or turn off the wireless connection, but continue to be logged into your profile naturally. Adjust your clock ahead 2 days. If this turns your time into a new month you have to adjust that too. Once you’re ahead 2 days or 48 hours from the time stamp on your savegame, fire up NIER and load your game again. Run up to the patch and check the now flat flowers for Indigo and Peach seeds. It’s very important that the flowers are flat, when you will harvest seeds from then and not the very flower itself. That is why you advance the time 2 days and not 4, 30, or 36 hours. No luck? Repeat the process. No, you can’t load the game again sadly, because the final result is decided the second you place down a seed.
Now that you have Indigo and Peach seeds, do exactly the same to produce Pink seeds with the Red and Indigo, albeit using only one row. Once you have at least one Peach and one Pink seed, we need to use them to get some more. Plant every Peach and Pink seed you have, doesn’t matter where, but in the off chance you’re the luckiest person in the world, alternate them down the rows. Water all of them, save, exit, advance the time 2 days, and see what we got. This process will produce 2-4 seeds from each planted one.
When you have roughly 18 each of the Pink and Peach seeds, it’s time to try for Whitey. Know that this last leg have a severely low chance of succeeding, but this solution will give you the best chance in the shortest time spent. Save your game in two slots, say slot 1 and slot 2. Then go fish, err..plant. This is the setup:
Row 1 [Pink] + [Peach] + [Pink] + [Peach] + [Pink]
Row 2 [Peach] + [Pink] + [Peach] + [Pink] + [Peach]
Row 3 [Pink] + [Peach] + [Pink] + [Peach] + [Pink]
It’s important that you start on Row 1, from the upper left to right. Then do Row 3, left to right, finally fill inn the middle row. You see, every connection you make between Pink and Peach, has a roughly 1% chance of producing a White. When you place the first Pink you have zero chance. When you place the Peach next to it you have a 1% chance. When you place the next Pink, you have two 1% chances, and so on. Once you get to the middle row those connections will also work across rows, and thus the middle seed in the middle row have 4 times the chance to produce a White. Contrary to similar solutions, this is all about creating as many connections as possible. Plant, water and save to spot 1.
Again, exit, advance time 2 days and load up the game and save spot 1. Is there a white flat flower? Look very closely as the Pink ones change color by day or night time. Whitey is pure white during the day and bluish at night. If you have one, congratulations. If not, do this:
Start harvesting the first Pink seeds from Row 1, then immediately re-plant a Pink seed. This seed will now have two possible connections for round two. Harvest the next Peach and re-plant a Peach seed. Do this with ALL the seeds in your rows. Save to spot 1 again, exit, advance time 2 days, and look again. Still nothing? Repeat the second step, harvest and replant the same color as your amount of seeds will only grow. Chances are you won’t make it to round 3 or 4 without Whitey showing up.

This worked brilliantly thank you loads. I had to replant but it was worth it.

There's an easier way to get this one online with a time stamp. You don't need to bother setting the clock back by two hours (this will require you to connect to live for every attempt at a white flower which is a lot of getting up off the couch if you're like me and this took 9 tries). Once you are logged into the game it doesn't matter what the xbox clock is set to, so if you see a white flower you can plug in your net and connect to xbox live at that point. The only time the system clock matters is when you load your save.
