You must have 1 million gold in your inventory all at once, anything you've spent in the past does NOT count. Check to see how much money you will have after selling all your items, then grind the rest out. You can make money by harvesting (recommended), catching fish (royal fish for 4K each), completing quests, or doing junk heap runs. Since Harvesting is recommended, I will explain it here:
Buy 99 rice/wheat seeds and 99 bounty fertilizers from Seaport
Fertilize/plant rice/wheat in all 15 spots (next to your house in the Village)
Save game
Go to dashboard, advance the day by one (if clock is at 4/25 then go to 4/26)
Load game
Harvest, Sell, Harvest, Sell, Replant, Repeat
Rice is worth the most money but you will notice that the game only allows you to carry 99 of one item at once, and you can optimize your time/money output by planting 10 with rice and 5 with wheat, and only having to run to the item shop to sell twice per date change.

There is another option which may or may not be faster, but is certainly quick cash. It involves selling white moonflowers (worth 5000 gold a piece x 15 garden slots, so 75k per harvest total) which you must cultivate anyway to get the Legendary Gardener achievement. Cultivating them is not easy, but in the solution below the procedure is described. If you're going for 100% completion, you'll have to grow them anyway, so this might be a better option than the wheat/rice. I don't think anyone has compared which gets you cash faster, but they're both good options none-the-less.

i did the rice, i planted the rice on -5 (east coast/canada time zone) moved the time zone to the +14 (kiribati time zone) and harvest/sell. reset to (east coast) planted and repeated so i could chat on the xbox with friends

If you are going for 1000gs you do not need to do any farming for this achievement at all. By the time you have farmed for enough resources for the weapons upgrades (a mental illness inducing grind in its self):

For this you'll need to be holding 1,000,000 at one time, not accumulative!
I highly recommend fishing as it's probably the quickest way so make sure to complete all "The Fisherman's Gambit" quests to make this a lot easier
First you will need to buy a stack of 99 Earthworms at Seafront then head to the water to the East of the Village (where you'd go to reach the Desert). Once you're here just fish, you'll mostly get Royal Fish which sell for 4000 (good money eh?) In a matter of minutes you're ready to go buy some more Earthworms to do it again, it's just a shame that once you earn 1,000,000 there's not much you can spend it on...

This trophy is not cumulative. You must hold all 1,000,000 Gold at once. It is best left until New Game++. In addition to the options listed below, first save your game on a separate save. Next, sell every raw material in your inventory, this should rack up a few hundred thousand. An extra thing to note is that if you have the DLC, you can obtain 50,000 Gold after completing the missions each time.

White Moonflower: The most tedious and luck-filled way to earn a lot of gold. Doing so involves manipulating the PS3 clock several times. For full details on how to obtain the White Moonflower see Obtaining White Moonflower
Fishing: Once you have completed the quest, The Fisherman's Gambit - Part 7, you will be able to catch Royal Fish with relative ease, which can be sold for 4,000G. Royal Fish can be caught with Earthworms at the Eastern Road Lake, with each Earthworm costing 10G.
Junk Heap B2 Run: In the Junk Heap level B2, there is a room in the far northern area filled with crates. In each crate there is a chance to obtain Amber, Fluorite or Damascus Steel, raw materials that can be sold for 3K+. Using the elevator to reach another level will make the crates respawn, watch out for the holes!
