How to unlock the The Once and Final King achievement in NieR - Definitive Guide

This is for the fight with the Shadowlord. The only part that is a little tricky is the very end when he is slumped at the door firing a bajillion orbs at you. You will not be able to use magic to hit him and you are knocked to the opposite side of the room after each time you hit him (2 or 3 times).

What you can do to close the gap is use the evade roll (right trigger) towards him while swinging a 1h sword or fast spear (2h swords are just too slow and leave you open) towards the end of each roll forward and you'll pass through the projectiles with the evade and while you are recovering for your next evade you will probably have slashed and destroyed the balls that would have hit you if you just tried to spam forward dodge. As you swing your sword to end your roll, immediately be spamming dodge forward again to chain roll and slash as quickly as possible, because while you aren't rolling you will be knocked back by any balls that hit you.

It isn't terribly hard but if you are somewhat sloppy and end up getting winged by a lot of orbs just dont forget to watch your health. I got rather low one time and almost didn't notice. I got this achievement on the first playthrough on normal mode, so that shows how easy this one is to get, really.

Going off on a Tangent (not really directly related to this achievement - just general FYI on timed boss kills etc.): The other timed boss achievements would be a little difficult to get on your first playthrough unless you forged up some of the better weapons because they become immensely more powerful at certain seemingly random points. A spear will go from like 130atk at lv1, forge it and it goes up to 170, forge it again and it might go up to like 400. A sword might be at 80atk at lv1, forge it and it goes up to 250, forge it again and it goes to 280. It's wonky.

My preferred weapons during my current 3rd playthrough are the phoenix spear and the ancient overlord 1handed sword. My phoenix spear is only level 2 and it already hits so hard that it kills any regular enemy in one hit with the forward lunge spear special attack and minibosses in about 2 hits. You dont have the guard break special that 1h swords do, but you don't need it because the regular consecutive spear attacks break blocks and hit so hard they knock off armor. The spear lunge does absurdly massive damage and often outright kills things that arent armored... it also sends enemies sprawling to the ground where you can execute them if you're in the mood (this is never necessary, but it's fun).

I use the spear 80% of the time. They seem a little clumsy at first because most of their attacks dont sweep a large area like swords, but once you get the hang of aiming them they're absolutely devastating. Before the point where you become so overpowered everything dies in a matter of seconds I would use Dark Whirlwind and just wade into enemies with whirlwind knocking off their armor and jabbing them with a spear to kill them. Of course, your results may vary depending on what weapons you have the materials to upgrade. Most of the weapons are trash unfortunately, but they almost all look pretty darn cool at least.

This is the final battle of the game if you're going for Ending A or B. Skip all cutscenes, don't worry if you miss the trophy in your first playthrough, it will be much easier in New Game+

Hit the boss with Dark Hand, or Dark Lance if not in range. He'll jump out from under the ground at time so always be on your guard. Once his health reaches half he'll start flying, hit him with several Dark Lance's.

For his final attack, he will be at the back of the room and unleash a barrage of magic, evade and hit him with your sword. Afterwards, you'll be teleported to the other end of the room, repeat the process two more times. Please note, you will be unable to use magic for the final stage of the battle. A cutscene will play and the trophy will unlock.
