Update Nov 5, 2019: The Torch and Tail DLC is available again, not sure for how long it'll be available. Thanks ClockWrkPhantom for the info!

Update May 2019: as mentioned by BigWiIIieStyIe and cptn cookie 1 in the comments, it appears that the Torch and Tail DLC is no longer available. Apparently, they rotate character packs and that pack is not available anymore. I don't know if it will be available again in the future, my guess is maybe, but not for a while.

Update March 2019: as mentioned by BigWiIIieStyIe in the comments, now they give you the two characters if you buy the Torch and Tail DLC:
I had already completed the Trials and needed stars so bought the DLC. It gave me stars instead of the keys along with some card packs, 50 rainbow stars and the two characters. All I had to do was select each once and the achievement unlocked.
I suppose you can still go through all the trials, so I'll just leave that info up for anyone who likes a bit of a challenge :) (or doesn't want to buy the DLC)

At the risk of getting negative votes for posting a solution to an achievement I haven't unlocked yet, I'll share a (hopefully) detailed description of what it is that you have to do to unlock this. Finally went back to finish this! I'm adding a few screenshots and tidying everything up a bit (same information as before, maybe a couple added details here and there). I'm also adding "spoiler" tags so that the solution is not a wall of text (easier to have only the part you're working on expanded)

To unlock this achievement, you need to equip two new characters, one plant and one zombie (Torchwood and Hover Goat-3000), that are inside two very well-protected chests. The steps below will guide you to get to those two chests.

Warning: Save all the codes you get for beating the challenges to dechiper the final code. (If you don't know what this means, don't worry, read on and you'll get all the info you need). (Thank you Kanchanaburi for the suggestion).

In a nutshell, the steps are the following (expanded below):
1 - Collect 50 rainbow stars (RS)
2 - Use the rainbow stars to open 50-RS chest
3 - Go to the vending machine to open the pack you get from the chest
4 - Repeat steps 1-3 until you receive all 4 color keys (red, green, yellow, blue)
5 - For each key, go to the Trials of Gnomus (ToG) area and use the key to open the corresponding door
6 - Complete the challenge & get a screenshot of the code you get at the end
7 - Go down into the chamber in the center of the ToG area and enter the code you got for beating the challenge into the machine
8 - Activate the machine & beat the color boss
9 - Leave the central chamber and go into the portal that opens up when you beat the boss (where the large gnome statue is).
10 - Screenshot the revised code at the end of the path.
11 - Repeat steps 5-10 for each color
12 - Use all 4 revised codes to form your rainbow code
13 - Go back to the central chamber and enter your rainbow code into the machine
14 - Beat the rainbow boss
15 - Leave the central chamber and walke through the newly opened portal (where the giant statue was)
16 - Use rainbow stars to open both chests to get both characters
17 - Respawn as those 2 characters
18 - Achievement unlocked (you might need to go back to the backyard)

Notes:
Once you use a key, that portal remains available, and you can open a new one and have more than one unbeaten challenge at a time.

If you beat the challenge, you don't have to beat the boss right away, the code you get can be used later on. You can also use it, quit, and come back later and input it again, it will still work.

Another random comment : if I would rate the trials by their difficulty, increasing from the easiest ( keys colour ): Yellow, Green, Red, Blue. Some quick tips for those who can't do what is being shown in videos.

I expect for an average player not more than 10 tries for the first two. Yellow is very self-explanatory. Get a versatile character, the preference for a weapon is yours - you need to hit little targets, remember. Don't forget to reload in the middle ( after 2nd or 3rd gate ).

Green - I would recommend using Imp, and Imp only. Double jumps all the way, straighten yourself while gliding with buttboosters.

Red - you will have to sweat here a little, but again, legit it would be the easiest to do with Imp. Double jump will save your life more than once, trust me.

Blue - this is the worst, unless you have a photographic memory. My best tip ( out of experience ) - get another person with you. Kid, husband/wife, friend - anyone. Ask them for the easy part. Second gate - 2 last symbols, next gates - 3 last symbols. You remember the symbols before those. Will be laughable easy. Don't bother with screenshots/phone photos - this will take too much time, and you're on timer, remember.

Thanks for the guide, I presumed it had something to do with the keys, however, I beat my first one yesterday (green key - balance) but took no notice of the code thing at the end. I'm guessing I'll have to do it again to gain a new code

@ Runner - had to successfully pass the challenge again to get access to the code room, cannot pass judgment if it generated a new code or if it was the same as before, but can safely recommend taking note/screenshot of the code before progressing out of the portal

@ leprekon666 You'll need to beat it again unfortunately. I'm not sure if you can rebuild your code from the other three, I mean, you can probably find the two symbols that are used for the final boss, but that final code won't work unless you've beaten all 4 color bosses. And for that, you would have to guess not only the two symbols that were in the correct order for the final boss code, but the other 6 symbols as well.

I already open one chest and no achievement. Need to open both chest get achievement. Need 150 rainbow stars to open both chest. Plant need 75 rainbow stars and zombie need 75 rainbow stars. Each chest have 5 locked on it. Each locked worth 15 rainbow star.

I'm just gonna say the people that give negatives can be finicky. Also once you enter the 5th code, you will fight a wave of gnomes and then King Gnomus THEN the 5th statue on the throne in the main is destroyed revealing a portal where the two chests are and both must be opened for the achievement like ReAl ImPuLsE said. Too bad I lack two more keys.

If you didn't write any of the codes down after completing the guardians like me, it's still pretty easy to figure out what your original codes were without having to do the trials again. Each symbol is only used once, so the two missing ones are your only options. Trial and error it at the switch again and if it spawns the Red/Green/Blue/Yellow Gnome Guardian again, you have the right combination.

Just to make it clear, the blank location is the symbol you need in that order. For example, if yellow portal has blanks in 1 and 3. Those are the 1st and 3rd symbol for the sequence. Make sure you equip the characters too. It's not just unlocking the chests.

@ Hexa Fox: You're on your way, "it's not just unlocking the chests" refers to the final step for the achievement. The chests you open give you one new plant and one new zombie (skins), so you have to actually use them to unlock the achievement. I'll update the solution right after sending this :)

Thank you for the reply. However, what chest are we talking about? There are so many now, it is sort of confusing. I already beat one of the challenges and defeated the Gnome King that was associated. So I should be good no matter what right? At the most I should have to do is equip some skins that I should already have as a result? Also +1 from me, big help.

@ Hexa Fox: What you did is right, now you have to do it three more times, one for each of the other doors. After that, you'll fight a wave of gnomes follwed by a giant gnome. Beating it will open up a portal. Inside the portal there are two chests. Those are the chests you'll eventually need to open toi get the new characters, equip them, and unlock the achievement.

Yo do go to the vending machine and open the packs you get, right? Because the key does not drop directly from the chest, but from the pack that is added as a gift for you to open at the vending machine. If you are doing that, that's some bad luck there!

After doing the boss fight the code that you will enter to get there will be shown at the end of the match if you win with two stones etched out. Those two in those positions will be part of the 5th code. so what I did is made a sheet of paper with all four codes I have and am circling the pieces that are etched out on them after the fights to form the 5th code with exactly where they are supposed to be on the screen when you enter it.

Also, the events seem to go in order Mix, Dino vs Cats, Boss hunt. The rainbow stars will carry over from previous events so I suggest stocking up 50 while on the dinos vs. Cats as it is much more difficult to get stars on boss hunt especially if you are playing with randoms that have no idea what to do.

This is probably not relevant at all but for the purpose of elimination I thought I'd share my experience with getting the keys from the 50 star rainbow chests
I've opened 5 chests and got 3 keys...
The two unsuccessful boxes were with pre-won rainbow stars from the previous event
The three successful boxes, I was awarded with a key straight after earning 50 stars in the same event time line
Coincidence or is that how the cookie crumbles???

hmmm... interesting theory! I've opened 4 chests and got 3 keys so far, the first three I opened with stars earned entirely or partially during that event and gave me a key, while for the fourth one, which didn't give me a key, I had all 50 stars waiting from the previous event. I guess I'll find out next time, as I already have 50 stars waiting... or maybe I'll open a smaller chest to spend some and earn some more...

Gmn, when u beat trial you get code, enter code to trigger boss. When u go into portal after boss, the 2 missing correspond to the one u got after trial.

Taking pic with your phone or tablet of each code after trial helps a lot.

Sry, I did not read through all the comments but how many keys can you hold at 1 time? Say you want to keep earning stars and buying keys, can you do that or do you pretty much get the stars, get a key, beat challenge and then repeat? I know you max at 50 stars but I’m wondering if I can focus on getting all 4 keys first and then doing challenges?

yes, definitely, once you get the keys, they are yours forever. If you use them (i.e., you open the door to the challenge), that door remains open forever (I should know, I have to finish my last 2 challenges and just can't seem to find it in me to go back to it!)

Might want to add there is an easier way to get the achievement now that EA added the Torch and Tail upgrade. Not really sure why they give you the keys and stars considering the achievement is for the goat and torchwood.

Also I did the memory one solo. The first two are no problem really, it's the last two since it's rough memorizing them. You can get away with not memorizing the last one because sometimes you end up jump over from the side anyways, diagonally, so your last choice is your only choice anyways.

Hmm, I completed all the trials, but it's not giving me the option to buy Rainbow Stars.

Thanks for taking the time (and risk!) to write this out. I doubt this works, but is there any indication that players can share keys? I know the combination changes for each player, but I'm wondering if both players can benefit from the unlocked doors, combinations, boss kills, etc.

I was awarded the yellow key, while the lady got the blue; if the possibility for sharing keys is allowed, I'd love to be able to help two others out as well.

I already got achievement need 150 rainbow stars to open two chest. After that need to change characters to Hover Goat-3000 and Torchwwod to unlock achievement.

@ Fuzzmeister No, but as ReAl ImPuLsE mentioned, each chest has 5 locks, and each lock requires 15 rainbow stars to open

On a side note, I'm reading all your comments & will wait until the discussion ends to update the solution :)

Tips for the RED door trial. There is a pattern. On the first 3 you can go right down the middle. I used the Titanfall guy with the hover. For the first and second, wait until the stream starts 2 or 3 blocks in and then jump to the 3rd, pause, then another 3. pause, another 3 and then run off the last one. ALWAYS JUMP INTO the flames, because MOST of the time, by the time you land it will have already changed. On the 3rd, start your hover jump when the 2 row is lit up, and then jump to the 3rd. pause, to the other 3rd, pause and then 2 pause and to the safe area.

The last one the pattern i couldn't see, but was simply lucky. If you get the pattern for the first 3 down it only takes 25 seconds per try.

Hola.
A quick comment for thise who think they're screwed because they have no screenshot of any or all trial codes.
1 - get in the trial chamber, don't activate it.
2 - spawn as Deadbeard or Cactus.
3 - press Y and spawn your drone/parrot pal.
4 - fly to the code you've unlocked earlier and make a screenshot or whatever.

getting a key is now 100% guaranteed from the 50 star red chest with this new update so that is good.

two months later, I FINALLY got all the keys, and just now defeated Gnomus laugh

just gotta grind out these last 150 rainbow stars and I have my completion back. Jesus what a grind!

Blue one is extremely easy if you know a bit about art of memory. All you have to do is to form a story with each of the symbols in order. Focus on the verbs, they are better remembered than nouns only. Sentences can be completely senseless. For instance, if you get watering can, fence and lawnmower (in that order) then form sentence like: I watered my fence and cut it. If you get lawnmower, mushroom, shoe, flamingo and barrow then go with: 'I cut mushrooms, kicked flamingo and took it away.

Sentence has to be adjusted to your language of course but form something which contains something you can associate with a symbol and you will be fine. Don't think too much about sense of the sentence, you have to keep your rhythm going. The simpler, the better. This way I was able to complete blue trial in three tries.

the number of rainbow stars you need will depend on how lucky you get when opening the chest. If every time you open a chest you get a different-color key, you'll only need 200 rainbow stars, but if you don't get a key or if you get duplicates (I'm not sure you can get duplicates), you'll need more. However, you can only hold a maximum of 50 rainbow stars at any given time, so you need to get 50, open the chest, get 50 more, open another chest, etc. etc.

Boss difficulty can't be changed, no.

Ill give a brief explanation of what you have to do for this as well I will add video guides too.

For dates on when the events will occur visit the PvZ website calendar:

Mystery Portal events are where you will get most of your rainbow stars. You will need to open the 50 Rainbow Star chest (same area as portal) to get 1 out of 4 Keys for use in the "Trials Of Gnomus" area in the backyard underground.

There are 4 colored doors in that area that you will need to unlock will the correct colored key that you got from the rainbow star chest, each door will open to unlock a challenge that you must complete in order to get a code (take a picture or screenshot) for use in the code chamber which is also in the Trials Of Gnomus area through the portal on the floor.

When you enter the code starting from the top of the code, you will spawn the corresponding colored guardian that you will have to defeat. Once beaten it will open a portal for you to enter and it will have a chest for you to open as well as the SAME CODE you got for beating the challenge except 2 tile will be blank. Compare these to your code to find out what symbols are the blank ones as these will be needed for your master code after you defeat all 4 colored guardians.

Once you defeat all 4, you will now have the correct order for your master code (all the blank tiles) so go to the code chamber and enter it. It will spawn the Rainbow Guardian which is alot harder than the previous 4. I used the Vampire Sunflower for this one as the Imp just wouldn't cut it.

After defeating him you will open a new portal where the throne gnome is sitting, and in this portal will be 2 shiny chests with 5 locks each on them. Each lock will need 15 Rainbow stars, do the math and that's another 150 Rainbow stars you will need to open both chests. The one on your left will unlock Torchwood and the one on the right will unlock Hover Goat-3000.

Time is money, so if you have EUR 9.99 and little time, you can also buy the Torch and tail upgrade. This addon gives you both characters plus the four gnomus keys, stars, consumables,etc. The achievement will pop once you have played with both characters.

edit: this solution won't help you to cheat trials, but rather help if you miss your sign order after each trial. To release guardian you would have to finish the trial even if codes below will give correct order.
@MushaConvoy -> thanks for tests and clarification

I'd like to share with you one finding related to trail codes.
They are indeed different for each account, but there is one thing which is always the same.

If you go to chamber where you can put codes and release each guardian, just forget the signs on the buttons, but... let's numbering the buttons.

So if you stay on the middle of the circle and try to imagine numbers on the buttons (starting from the lever) and going clockwise.

Now please step on buttons in following "number" sequences (according to numbers, not signs) for guardian:
Yellow: 2 - 4 - 3 - 1 - 7 - 5 - 8 - 6
Blue: 3 - 6 - 7 - 2 - 1 - 4 - 5 - 8
Red: 5 - 1 - 7 - 3 - 8 - 4 - 2 - 6
Green: 4 - 3 - 8 - 6 - 1 - 7 - 5 - 2
Rainbow: 4 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 8 - 7 - 5 - 6

Example:
my buttons in chamber are in following sequence (clockwise, starting from lever):
barrow (1), hurdle (2), watering can (3), shoe (4), mower (5), flamingo (6), flowerpot (7), shovel (8)

then my "sign" sequence for Yellow Guardian will be:
hurdle, shoe, watering can, barrow, flowerpot, shovel, mower
Those "number" sequences were correct for my two accounts, but on each of them I have already passed all trails (that's why I have found this tricky thing).
So I cannot confirm if this idea works without passing trail.

I did all trials,
I entered a good code (and a million other combinations)but the boss did not show up,
I have already lost hope.
at the end I tried your way.
I stood in the middle facing the lever and pick 4 - 1 - 3 - 2 - 8 - 7 - 5 - 6
and he appearedtoast

I've done a few tests to save anyone else the trouble.

- Entering the code without having the key/completing the trial does nothing.
- Entering the code after unlocking the door but before completing the trial does nothing.
- The codes in your solution match perfectly with the code I received at the end of my trial. I took a screenshot but didn't look at it, went back and tried your code and it spawned the boss right away. Looking back at the screenshot, the code matched anyway.

Upvoted solution, using your codes is much easier than remembering bloody symbols...

Did not see it mentioned so I will mention it. You have to spawn as each of the characters to get the cheevo to pop. I unlocked both chests and no pop. After I spawned as Torchwood and Goat, it popped

You can't get the fifth boss by blind test the code,even you put in the right code,the boss will not show up.I just try and confirm it.

So, you have to complete the four test before,no other way.

Buy the 50 star chest from the town hall. When you open the pack, there will most likely be a key. Go down to the Trials of Gnomus place (see The Secret of Secrets trophy) and unlock the door corresponding to the color key you have. Complete the trial and take a picture of the 8 picture code you see there. After that, go to the middle portal in the floor and enter the code into the runes. There will be a boss fight section at the end of each code entered. When you finish the fight, a statue will break and you will be awarded with a new item.
