How to unlock the Smarty Branches achievement in Plants vs. Zombies - Definitive Guide

The Tree of Wisdom is part of the Zen Garden which is unlocked by progressing through the adventure, the Tree of Wisdom is unlocked by finishing the adventure.

The Tree of Wisdom needs to then be purchased from Crazy Dave for $10,000, once bought it can be accessed from the Zen Garden by pressing RB until the tree is highlighted then by pressing A.

The tree needs to be feed to grow however it requires its own special feed which is different from other plants and can be bought from Dave's shop and is located next to where the tree was bought. Each bag of feed given to the tree grows it 1 foot and gives you one piece of information. Therefore to reach a height of 100 feet 100 bags of feed are required.

For buying the tree Dave will give you 5 bags for free therefore 95 bags need to be bought for the achievement, each bag will cost you $2,500, therefore $237,500 is require to buy enough bags.

I have added a video which shows a fast way of getting money, the video is from the pc (which is why the layout of the menus is different) however the strategy and gameplay is the same.

There is a better method (in my opinion) to where you can move the entire defense up one column, and thus have more marigolds. This is the guide with everything explaining it. http://www.gamefaqs.com/pc/959255-plants-vs-zombies/faqs/565...
All rights to the guide go to the creator.

Also keep in mind that found plants in your Zen Garden, if taken care of from time to time, can yield $8,000 to $10,000 if fully grown, making it quite a bit more than around $8,000 per Last Stand!

Quick and easy way to get money, takes about an hour to do

@Vince989: Zen Garden can contribute, but it's much more time consuming than this method. It also takes a lot of time and money to get the garden up and running, especially if you buy the night and water gardens. It might be advantageous to do both, but the method above is definately the faster of the two.

I don't mess with the night and water gardens myself. Even immature shroom and water plants will net you $3-5k, but you save $60k by not buying the gardens. So I sell off my shroom and water plants before the are finished, and keep feeding the normal plants until they are mature and sell them for $8k. When I first realized I could sell the plants, I sold about half a gardens worth for about $80k

I left the game alone for months....when I went back I had enough money for this achievement and I don't know where it came from, I'm confused, but I sure like a free achievement which I thought would take a ton of time.

positive vote.

I wouldnt advise moving everything up a column, if they vault over the onion they always kill the first shroom.

Just thought I'd say that it's pretty pointless to farm coins unless you've already beaten endless survival and dont have enough. Beating the 10 survival sections + endless gives a lot of money and plants for the Zen. I didn't have to farm any coins..

If you have completed all achievements except this and still need some money. Sell all your plants in the zen garden they are a great resource of easy and fast gold.

If you are a completionist trying to get all the trophies, you will easily have enough money for this achievement by the time you get all 48 trophies.

Does not work because its during the day in the mini game. I don't know how to make this work. EDIT: (I leave this comment here in case someone else don't know that the coffee beans makes them work at day).

Try to complete the 40 wave survival achievement. If you do that and complete the campaign you should have enough money. Just sell your plants over and over again.

i used a mix of this guide AND zen garden.
i am a completionist, not only for chievos. so i wanted to have all gardens and houses anyways.
while doing like this guide or playing any mode (specially in survival) you'll get plants for your garden.
just feed them up and any normal plant maxed out sells for 8K and any night or water plant sells for 10K
so i started to max out my plants and sell them, as i had a full garden anyways. got this chievo in a few days after starting just playing an hour each day or so.
when you come back to your garden after several hours of not playing the game, all plants want water and soil and stuff... so during the day i turned on the game a few times to water my plants and in the evening i sold them and played survival or whatever to get new plants.

I did both the last stand, and using the zen garden. The video above is one of the better ones on doing last stand (it's definitely better than the AchievementHunters one), but I found that the gold magnets served no purpose, and made it harder than need be. I think the reason the guide included them is because on the PC you actually have to click coins to pick them up, whereas in the 360 version you simply move your cursor overtop of them (so just keep doing circles while the zombies are coming and you'll get every coin that's dropped). So instead I just did regular magnets which help greatly with the football & bucket zombies. One more tip: there's no point in dropping the 20K needed to get the extra slot for the karp. I found myself rarely using it, and it's an extra 3-4 runs to rebuild the cash spent on it.

As for the garden, I didn't buy any flowers, instead what I did is play a round of last stand, any flowers I got I'd water & fertilize, then play another round & repeat with any new plants. Once the plants got to $5-8K to sell them, I'd sell them off, always making sure to have 4 free spots in my garden before starting a last stand round.

In the end I probably made as much (or more) on the plants than on last stand. Ended up with about $50k more than I needed.

I don't know about you, but I know I've spent time on games where I went specifically after one achievement only to find out that I wasted a lot of time because I could have got it just playing the game normally. Well, this is one of those games and achievements.

While there is nothing wrong with farming coins for this achievement and others, there's really no point in this game if you are going for all of the other achievements as well.

Just natural playing through the Survival modes (which you will have to do to get Endless Survival for that achievement) will net you a LOT of plants for your Zen garden, which you can get $10k-$12k+ for (after the coins/gems you get before finally selling them).
To put this into perspective, I just finished the Endless Survival achievement, have already built the tree up 100 ft., have all of the flower upgrades from Crazy Dave, have a Night Garden, all of the unique Zen Garden items (glove, snail, etc.), a Level 5 Clown House, 18 plants in my Zen Garden, AND $114,000 still in the bank.

As you can see, I spent a lot of unnecessary money along the way and STILL have more than I would even need for anything else in the game.
Hope this helps save you some time!:)

I think some people gave this a negative because the solution is basically "do nothing", but its 100% correct. As long as you tend to your garden after getting a bunch of plants in survival mode, selling these will net you all the money you need. The top solution for farming is basically a waste of time.

This is absolutely true, once you get to the Survival mode hard rounds, you will get a lot of plants. I haven't even started endless survival but as soon as I'll sell I my plants I'll be able to buy all the things needed for Tree of Wisdom and all 49 plants. No need to boost this one, it comes naturally.

Ditto, I still havnt unlocked survival - endless (currently on day - Hard) i played most of the mini games and puzzles for fun and between all those plants you get on the hard levels I already have all 49 plants and $215,000 those 8-10k plants add up in a hurry

Wow, I am really glad I read this and didn't do the above method. That would have been a huge waste of time. Seriously, playing through the entire survival mode to unlock the 40 flags will net you enough money to buy EVERYTHING in the game!!

I just finished enless survival and don't have anywhere near enough money to finish growing the tree to 100 ft. Not sure what the difference is. You must have taken a lot more care in the Zen garden during play. My tree is at 65 feet and I have to start farming. :(

Gacys right, man. All i did was check on my garden after every survival match while I was trying to unlock Endless, and I've already got my tree up to 100 feet with tons of plants to spare. I've bought every single thing in the store, farming is a waste of time.

I highly recommend the first solution. It helped me greatly.

I would also like to point out that the Zen Garden is a gold mine.
Any plants picked up during the first method can be raised and sold afterwards. ($8000 each! Not to mention the $2000 you get for fertilizing them!)

P.S. if you do not like waiting (like me), you can disconnect from Xbox Live and set your clock a day forward.

After completing Adventure Mode, this will become purchasable for $10,000. To grow the tree one foot requires one $2,500 bag of fertilizer specific to the Tree of Wisdom so I hope you have plenty of money laying around. If you don't here's my advise, though it's not entirely quick like some endless survival guides, I found I had plenty of money before even unlocking that.

While working to unlock the "Alive and Planting" trophy, you must clear all 10 survival levels, in each level you will get plenty of zen garden plants; WATER THEM. Water and fertilize them and fill in your garden. as soon as they give you diamonds for being grown fully, sell them. Normal day plants give you $8,000 for being sold at full size, even after giving $2,000 for growing it all the way. Mushrooms fully grown give $10,000 when sold.

Basically don't hoard your plants, sell 'em for quick cash, you can go from 17k to 200+k quite easily when you sell an entire screen of plants, just be patient, then buy all the fertilizer you want!

You will have to grow the tree of wisdom to 100 feet. Once you have completed adventure mode, the tree of wisdom is bought from crazy dave for $10,000. where it will then be located in the Zen Garden. You will then need to feed it tree of wisdom food. Each packet you feed it will raise its height by 1ft. Therefore you will need to purchase 100 packets. You start of with 5 so you will need to have $237,500 to purchase 95 more packets.

The Tree of Wisdom will be available after completing Adventure mode and is purchased off Crazy Dave for $10,000.

After entering the Tree of Wisdom for the first time Crazy Dave will give you 5 free packets of Tree Growth, each packet grows the tree 1 foot meaning we will need to buy 95 more for $2500 for a grand total of $237,500.

Here's a much simpler and faster way for people who don't want to wait:

There's a trick:

Just use all Tree Growth packets at the tree, leave to the garden, go again to the tree, click on the Tree Growth packets button and Dave will come and give you again 6 (seems to be 5 but are 6) new Tree Growth packets. Use them, go to the garden, then back to the tree and so on...
So you won't have to use any money!

Thanks to maxijod for this info.

Once you complete Adventure Mode, the Tree of Wisdom can be purchased from Crazy Dave for $10,000. Once you have purchased the Tree of Wisdom it will be placed into your Zen Garden. You will need to feed the Tree of Wisdom for it to grow by buying packets of food, each pack of food will grow the tree 1 foot. You start with 5 packs, so will need to purchase 95 more packets at a total of $237,500 (or $2,500 each).

At 50 feet tall you will get a ticker at the base of the tree to tell you how tall the tree is or how many more bags of fertilizer you need to buy to get to 100 feet.
