How to unlock the Still Alive achievement in Portal 2 - Definitive Guide

The requirements for this are simple enough, though you cannot quit, or complete sections of the course to earn this achievement. It has to be done in one sitting.

If you're having difficulty mastering each chamber, hopefully the video below will help solve any issues.

The following time markers are the start of each chamber:

Chamber 1: 00.10
Chamber 2: 00.58
Chamber 3: 01.55
Chamber 4: 03.19
Chamber 5: 05.25
Chamber 6: 06.52
Chamber 7: 08.19
Chamber 8: 09.45
Chamber 9: 12.27

Chamber 8 contains a rather simple but tricky funnel maze with crushing panels. Just take it slow and communicate non stop. On the last upward funnel section allow your partner to time the funnel jump. Jumping on and off of the reverse button may cause confusion and death.

Noted and added. Though the only chambers that may cause anyone any trouble are the last two.

K so you should probably put this in your description. On chamber 9 if the orange player doesn't move at the very beginning of the test he'll instantly be shot down. So going AFK at the start of chamber nine is a bad idea. My friend made the mistake of taking a piss before we started. It's frustrating...

just want to point out a small helpful hint. make sure in the last 2 chambers you remember which portal you use to start objects such as the light bridge and excursion tunnels. Dont want to accidentally place the portal you used to start them and end up losing them which i did on chamber 9 and my friend wanted to kill me ;)

Here's another solo run through this achievement. This one has a commentary throughout and avoids the hard part of chamber 8 by skipping it completely.

Edit: Thanks to Predator Ranger for pointing this out.
While I did do it in Chamber 9: you do not need to bring the blue guy through to the end. Once you get the first guy to the end he can put in the disc and finish the level. Both players will unlock the achievement. This eliminates the dangerous part of going through the conveyor belt twice.

A quick tip for chamber 9: you do *not* need to bring the blue guy through to the end. I followed the guide exactly to the point where yellow gets to the end of the conveyer belt, but skipped the part where blue comes through. I brought yellow to the end (leaving blue in the first room), put in the disc, and both accounts unlocked the achievement :)

After failing my first attempt right at the end on the conveyor, whilst following this video (gutted!!) - My second attempt met with more success. Great little shortcuts at the end.. :)

great video wouldnt have done it solo without this. although one little thing i might add is that you do not need to bring both players on the conveyor belt in test chamber 9. get player 2 to take out the bots at the first set up the portals and finish the rest with player 1. both players still get the achievement even tho one is on the other side of the map.

Excellent solution. Of course the only tricky part (with extreme risk of death) has to be the very last part in Chamber 9. I recommend practicing Chamber 9 a few times first and perfect the jump onto the conveyor belt and the last jump from the funnel. That way, you won't mess up Chamber 9 as easily and start all over from the beginning.

Just wanted to add that the last jump in chamber 9 is extremely risky. I fell twice trying to make it to the ledge with the CD room at the end. What I ended up doing is after you make the final portal, you remain in the excursion funnel and DO NOT attempt the jump. Instead, turn your character around so that he's facing opposite the ledge. You can place another portal across there and the excursion funnel will push you safely onto the ledge. I did this and it felt so amazing doing this risk free.

VIDEO WARNING: Level 6 - Don't just jump into the first beam with player 2 until you know what you are going to do. You will die if you get to the end of the wall, and there is no way to pause. Just hoping to help some people save time and learn from my mistake...

Finally got it after 4 tries... 1 time I missed the first jump on room 9, second time I accidentky bumped into a turret which threw me all the way down. Third I missed the last jump... an hour wasted. 😭

Great solution. Being able to skip the majority of Chamber 8 and 9 was very helpful.

Great solution to do solo. It took me a few times to get the jump in chamber 8 right. Just a tip, you don't have to jump around the vertical metal beam in chapter 8 like the video does at 15:00. You can see the white area just before the beam. If you have your aim set so that it is just into the beam before the white area your portal will still land. I found that second jump around the beam to be harder than landing on it so that worked for me.

VIDEO WARNING 2: Level 9 - When starting this level, be aware that turrets will shoot at you (just player 2 it seems) immediately. be ready to down and right to take cover. also i tried staying in the funnel as Strykerz suggested and died from turret fire... so i do not suggest that either. definitely practice 9 before starting from Level 1. you will save so much trouble.

You must complete all of Course 4 (all 9 chambers) without you or your partner ever dying. You must start from Chamber 1. If you or your partner die, you must restart from Chamber 1. The achievement will pop soon after you insert the disc into the player.

In my opinion, the last two chambers are really the only ones that may give you issues without preparation. Chamber 8 has the "spike maze," be sure the one inside is quick with the portal gun and the one outside is quick with the button. In Chamber 9, be sure the person controlling the light bridge covers all your tracks so a stray turret doesn't kill you. I recommend playing through these last two chambers until you and your partner are comfortable with the puzzles before starting this achievement.

If you have everything fairly memorized, the entire course should only take about 20 or 30 minutes to complete.

Definitely agree about the last 2 chambers, although the last one has been giving me a lot more trouble than any other. Also it's probably worth noting that communication is the key to success here, so get ya microphone plugged in.

Also, Howcast has a complete Course 4 walkthrough up on YouTube. You might want to post the videos to a few courses (8 & 9 most likely) so that people know how to get through those with less difficulty from the get-go.

For Chamber 8 (I think that's the one with the spike maze), if you are the one going through to get the storage cube, you can survive taking a little damage from the stationary spike walls if your partner doesn't get on/off the button in a timely fashion. However, too much contact will kill, so you don't have that much leeway. Obviously, the crusher plates will kill you instantly, so avoid those as much as possible. I recommend that the player managing the button (me in my play through so I know) "juggle" the maze player left/right, up/down right before the crusher plates (be careful about getting too close!), and then send the maze player through as soon as the plate retracts. This'll give you the most time to get past it and avoid a crunchy death, and a Course restart.

Probably worth mentioning that this can be done split-screen by yourself once you've learned the levels. Not easy, but definitely doable. I got the achievement this way.

CnJ Drewery is correct. It is definitely possible to do this one on your own. My girlfriend helped me with the first few, but the last three or four I did by myself working both controllers.

Lesson learned the hard way...do NOT, under any circumstances, go away from your controller in Chamber 9 (start). We did 8 perfect, then my partner was answering a message while it loaded, and as soon as it started he was destroyed, at the spawn, by a turret.

Hi, I don't have anything to add other than I used the following video to do this alone (the guy in the video does it alone as well which makes it very easy to follow along with) without too much of a problem. The only place I died the first time I tried it was in chamber 8, and that was a foolish mistake. I would suggest that you load up chamber 8 and do a run through of that alone using this video if you are going to do this, and work out the kinks there.

This is a heads up -
Do NOT set the DLC to download and decide to attempt a run of Still Alive (in my case solo) while waiting.

Once the download completes a confirmation will pop up, only giving an option to accept resulting in "exiting" to the main menu and thus all progress lost.

For this trophy, you must complete the whole course in one sitting without a single death to you or your partner. The first time you play through Course 4 it can seem challenging. It is full of bottomless pits, lasers, and turrets. The last chamber especially can be easy to die in if you are not careful. Patience and careful understanding of all the chambers and their solutions is the key. Refer to the video for possible strategies to ensure you and your partner do not die at all during your run for this trophy:

If you have two joysticks and no one to go with, you can do it alone. Video guide . I got it right the second time.

The main thing is not to rush. I think you need to go through the series first to learn the cameras.
