Two big things to note about this achievement. One, the main storyline is timed so you need to make steady progress! And two, there is another achievement for not completing the main questline. So you'll need to make a save sometime before the end to get both.
The objectives you need to complete to finish the quest are written below, with spoiler tags for more details.
The Call to Arms quest
In the starting town of Thorwal, find a tavern, hear a rumor about the Hetman needing heroes, and then head to his location on the map. Speaking to him will start the quest to find all the map pieces.
- Collecting 7 out of 9 map pieces
There are multiple map pieces, but you only need 7 to advance the quest. Some are much easier than others. But all of them require you to hear a "hint" first.
Felsteyn - The first hint is a freebie. Enter the house on your quest marker to get a map piece and a rumor.
Skjal - Speak to the NPC at his house and he will ask for a letter from the Hetman. You can only recieve a letter after helping Thorwal with multiple quests! So it takes quite a bit of work. Go back to Thorwal, visit him and get the letter, and then return to the man for the map piece.
Ottarje - Save first. Speak to the man, but do not mention the Hetman, be patient, and he will bring you a map piece.
Varnhome - Visit the houses and find a woman who will ask that you clear "the Temple of the Nameless" before she gives you a map piece. The temple is found on Hjalland.
Vidsand - Save. Speak to the woman, be polite, and ask her if she knows anything else that will help. When prompted, ask to "see" the map piece, don't take it.
Thoss - First visit Clanegh and ask for Yasma at a tavern. You'll learn that she lives in Thoss, so find here there, and she will give you a quest. To find the Dark Magician Ruin, follow the road to Thoss until it splits off.
Brendhil - Find the man in his home, and then speak to him to get a rumor. Ask him if he knows anything else, and he will ask for a letter of recommendation from a man in Orvil. Find him, and he will tell you to kill Gorah, near Skjal. Do so, search the house for a bone, bring it back to the Orvil man, and then bring the letter to the man in Brendhil again.
Angbodirtal - Go to the nearest tavern, question the bartender, and keep buying stuff. You need to spend a significant amount of money before he admits where the man is with the map piece. Save. Then talk to him and try to convince him to give you the map piece. Reload and try different options if you fail.
Hjalsingor - Find the woman in her home, who says she sold the map piece she had to a traveling merchant. You then need to travel the roads until you run into him (try going from Ottarje to Orvil). It costs 60 ducats to purchase it from him.
Harbor Rumor - After picking up a rumor about a female sailor and her ship, visit a harbor, explore the ship, tell her about your quest, and then follow her on her journey, and she will give you a map piece later.
Hermit's Lake - From Phexcaer, head to Hermit's Lake. Save on the way. Pass the Griffin's Test (spoiler alert, it's a wheel), and then go to the lake. Go around in circles (or reverse) until you run into a Unicorn. Be patient and don't make it mad, and it will promise you a map piece in 5 hours. Return later for it.
Do this last! The unicorn will take a random map piece from another NPC that you haven't taken one from yet. So it's wise to have him fetch one of the pieces that are difficult to get.
- Hyggelik's Ruin (active after collecting most of the map pieces)
After finding the 7 map pieces, the location will be revealed (it will not always be in the same spot). Save first. Find it and fight your way through until you find a door with a skeleton. To the right of that door is a room with enemies. You have to fight all three waves in that battle to get the sword. You can't flee or die. Once you win, tell the hetman your story, and he will give you the sword.
In addition to this, do not pick up any gold. It's cursed, and will screw up your entire playthrough. Use your previous save if need be. After that, grab your sword and head out.
- Orkish Activity quest
After hearing rumors of Orc activity (or finishing the other main quest items), you will need to clear the Orc Cave in between Phexcaer and Skelellen, and then read the document you find at the end in a chest. (not the chest with the riddle, the chest with the lever instead). Use a magician or someone with a good comprehension stat to read the Orc letter, and it will reveal their location.
- The Final Battle quest
Find the Orc army in between Phexcaer and Hermit's Lake, and use the sword to end them. Save first for the "bad" ending achievement too.
Once there, wait in camp, and then approach the army. Note that only your "champion" can fight the Orc leader, meaning whoever has the sword in their inventory. It cannot be switched. My advice is to just pile your healing potions into his/her inventory, as no one else will be able to use them. Then, just attack the leader with the sword (and only the sword), healing when need be. Once the orc is defeated, the army will leave, and the credits will roll.
You have until the 27th of Peraine,1010 to do all of this. It's about 2 years in-game, so it's not too bad. But if you make camp a lot or dawdle in caves, you can waste a lot of time, so be careful. Remember that you can also turn off survival mechanics in the settings if you're having trouble.
