How to unlock the Mowing Them Down achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

This solution requires the Undead Nightmare DLC, but it`s the easiest method by far.
Once you`re able to go back to Mexico, head to El Presidio. Climb the ladders and get on one of the cannons (I used the ones at the southern gate). After you`ve done this, just keep blasting the zombies. I got this achievement in about 30 minutes doing it this way.

NB, if you keep moving the cannon all the way to the left or right and wait until you hear the zombies moaning, you`ll find a group of four or five have spawned making your grind a little easier. Hope this helps :D

this is exactly what i had started doing. seems like zombies spawn way better than the mexican army and obviously they don't have guns and can't climb to get you so it's pretty easy. i was gonna ask if you could get this achievement with undead nightmare but i guess i know for sure now:) didn't want to keep doing it if it wasn't gonna unlock. thanks!

You could probably throw the zombie bait to get kills with less shots. You'll get a better kill chain that way as well. Great idea, I'll be trying this in a little while.

Excellent solution, took about 20-30 minutes using the cannon nearest to the ladder by the main gate, but the zombies were always spawning. It helped to also shoot the cannon at the zombies spawning up the hill along the wall of the fort while waiting for the main group to spawn, this seemed to make 6-7 spawn on the road right in front of you a lot faster.

No, they don't. You can see your stats under Stats - Combat. Popped for me at 1 Undead killed with gatling gun, 499 killed by cannon.

Anyway, excellent solution.

It seems like after you have completed the story you have an unlimited ability to build Undead Bait. What I liked to do is when the zombies started to thin out is throw a couple of bottles onto the main road and another large group would spawn.

Maybe I'm a little too late here @OdderOtter72 but yes, both kills count towards the cheevo. Just got mine and had 41 gatling kills (due to saving some cities along the way which had mounted gatling) and unlocked at 459 kills with the cannon.

Well, it does take a bit more than ten minutes, but with fortunate spawning you can rack up fifty kills every 2-3 minutes here, making it no more than a 30min job.

I can also confirm that, if some freak accident may lead to your death (suicide) by cannon... Mistakes happen... Hitting 'Respawn near town' will not restart your counter. So no time wasted when you blow yourself up ^_^

This method worked great! The only problem that occurred was the damn thing glitched on me. Headless Zombies running around, that kinda thing. Kills don`t count at that point and also when i went to save, it froze. If you find yourself having the same problems as me, i recommend to get 50 kills, then save, repeat process. A 15 minute job turned out to be an hour for me. But seriously good method of getting this Achievement.

By Law Violation on 23 Sep 2014 16:57
Okay, I spoke too soon. This did work. There were just two things working against me.

1) When you die, you lose all your stats since your last save. I found that you can "use" horse deeds in your inventory to cause a quick-save, but I hadn't been doing that and blew myself up by aiming too low with the cannon a couple times. So I had lost progress and didn't realize it at the time.

2) After a while, the zombies become invisible (just their clothes remain). This happened in other scenarios too (appears to be a long-standing bug in this game). And when that happened, it stopped counting kills. I could take out a hundred, but my stats would not increase (count of cannon kills).

So yeah, I did get it using this method, even though I was playing the stand-alone Undead Nightmare disc.

Ok just got this today. FYI its just a pain to do but you can do it solo. I'd recommend doing this with a boost buddy to make it easier.

I did this when I got the dynamite unlocked, think it was around lvl 13-15. dynamite makes it easier to get the law after you but there is a cannon as well you can use.

Start a private free roam session, and travel to El Presido. If you have dynamite throw it at the main building and as soon as it explodes you will have the law after you. alternatively if you don't have dynamite, get on the cannon above the transport wheel and fire it at the tower to the right of the cannon.

now mount the gun near the transport wheel and mow down enemies as they keep coming. if you got a buddy have him cover the back entrance as they spawn randomly on the front and back paths. if you are doing it solo just make sure to pick off enemies at the back door occasionally with your repeater to get them to respawn and hopefully come down the Gatling gun side.

that is pretty much it, just keep killing as they come, you will get good xp if you can keep a high wanted chain kill spree and get some leveling done as well for the level 50 achievement. also if you are solo you will probably die a bunch, just repeat the initial steps to get the law spawning and keep grinding out the kills.

notes:
- you can keep track of your kills under the pause menu > stats > combat > "People killed with the Gatling gun"
- for some reason i tried mounting the other Gatling gun way up top in the tall tower but the law wouldn't keep spawning. I didn't try with a partner who was on the ground level, so the law may keep spawning if one of you is still near the bottom Gatling gun
- note from crewdy4923: "make sure you click to exit multiplayer if you want to continue getting kills later". (if you don't I guess stats don't save unless you do something where you see the "saving" prompt in the corner)
- note from STLfan2468: SP and MP kills do not accumulate on one score. They are separate and you must either obtain 500 kills in SP or 500 kills in MP for the cheevo to unlock. ie. 250 kills in SP and 250 in MP will not work.

not sure, i haven't really done any of the modes, if in your pause menu > stats > combat > "People killed with the Gatling gun" is increasing with those kills in mp, I would guess that would work since they would be enemies in those modes too. I cant say for sure though as I did this method starting from 0 kills in MP and got the achievement to pop on kill number 500.
0

By Doctor Mantis on 26 May 2010 20:08
What you have to realize is that you can't count SP and MP together. You either get 500 kills in SP or MP. That's a big misconception people have with this. To prove it, I had over 100 kills in SP with the Gatling Gun and when I got 400 kills in MP with the cannon it didn't unlock. I racked another 100 kills and the achievement popped. Add this to your solution. Good find!

By Kamera on 26 May 2010 20:41
yea, but since the FFA and gang modes are technically in the MP mode, do those accumulate for the same "game mode"? I'll add the tidbit about SP and MP not being cumulative, I had always assumed that myself but I'll add that in case anyone else was unsure.

i can already tell u i am 100% positive.

By Doctor Mantis on 27 May 2010 21:34
Mine popped at 494 MP kills, with over 100 SP kills, so it doesn't accumulate both. Not sure where the extra 6 went though...

Thanks for the tips, I found it was taking too long at the suggest safe cannon and went with the one at the front myself, found even with dying I was racking up the kills faster.

At the other cannon I found that there would be a group of 3 that would stay out of sight for ages before making a fun for it so you could hit them, and then they would respawn in the same place, I think that was what was slowing me down there.

Worked! Climbing in the canyon above the main entrance of the prison, and throwing dynamite down there. The army began to appear. Three hours later, and obtained tens of bounties, the achievement unlocked!

Just to ensure success, I called some friends to help me. They were at the bottom of the prison, killing the enemies that I let slip away.

They count in SP if you kill any enemy that is a "red dot" on your map. the problem is, its been reported on deleted solutions that replaying SP missions does not add to your machine gun stats. People reported replaying the mounted gun missions 20+ times and it didnt unlock.

I tried using the machine gun on top of the safe house in el matadoro. but all i did was kill 500+ people that weren't red dots, just civilians and I did not get the achievement. So far this was the only way I've seen that actually is confirmed as working. It sucks that no SP way has been found yet to make use of your story kills, but maybe in time someone will report a better way :/

Thanks for the guide! works like a charm.

Doing it form the cannon right above the transport wheel I noticed that no enemies spawned behind me at all. plenty spawned from all thee sides though - front comign down on the road to meet me, left hand side sniping me from some rocks, and right hand side behind the presidio. Left hand guys i pretty much find you cant hit until they start shooting at you, then you just calmly aim at the top edge of cliff exactly where their map blip is. I didnt think i dould hit the right hand guys who are hiding bheind the wlals of presidio until i noticed that if you aim for the far top left corner of the tower (gatling gun tower) on your right, this seems to explode close enough to usually pick off some of most of these guys. I was able to get wanted streaks of 25-30 ppl this way and not die for about 50-75 guys at a time (sometimes they overwhelm you with a slow fire rate of the cannon) wihtout ever having to leave the gun or use my revolver on any guys.

If you complete all story missions there is a defensable browning gun in El Matadero. You only need to kill 500 people (townspeople and lawmen), its a lot easier cause you have already racked a bunch through various story missions.

30 May 2010 06:41

You may be tempted to do this in single player since you get a lot of mounted kills in missions but do it in multiplayer. It's a little more tedious but you get XP with every kill which makes the extra work worth it.

I did this at El Presidio. If you don't want to be bothered by other players do it in a private session. Go to the entrance that has the machine gun and climb up to the cannon on the other side of the doors. If there is a soldier inside the compound kill him to get a wanted level. If there isn't shoot a box of TNT or a lantern to get a bounty. Now hop on the cannon and start lighting up soldiers as the ride up the road.

It only happened a few times but be wary of soldiers coming in the entrance behind you, as it can be annoying to get domed from behind. All in all if you use this method in multiplayer you'll walk away with your achievement, at least 25,000 XP, and at least a few MP challenges.

I included challenges you can get, not just straight kill XP. Of course people may already have all the challenges so may only get the 2,500 XP but I got the bounty amounts, staying alive with a bounty, and various other challenges and all their tiers which added up to a massive amount of XP. Your mathmatical prowess is appreciated though.

NOTE: This guide is a useful one if you have not got the Undead Nightmare pack - If you do see the top guide for a quicker method.

I had tried with the above guides on numerous occasions, i was getting kills but was often unlucky with spawns behind me and the army not being able to be shot.

I tried on a different gun within the fort, this being the cannon just above the transport spot to the right of the gate as you head towards the southern side of El presidio.

On this gun i was able to achieve roughly 100 kills with little or no effort.

It is important to note the spawns:

1. you will have army from the direct left which will be at the top of the hill

2. Men from the distance heading towards you on the road (easy when they get of their horses to just blast away)

3. On the right on the hill. The hill on the right can often be a bit glitchy and the men will stand on the side wall of El presidio and not be able to shoot you and vise versa. This is however beneficial as it saves you from being overwhelmed. Sometimes they will fall off the cliff edge and might survive so be wary of any shots from here.

I managed to grind out these kills in about an hour.

If you don't mind doing this in a longish time then this is the guide for you. Buy doing coop missions, you will not only work towards this achievement but will also receive a mass of xp points which is the quickest way to level up. Simply, keep going through the escape mission. Here every time you have a chance to get at least fifty kills with cannons placed at the ridge adjacent to the church, but also earn a mass of xp for completing the mission which generally takes around 12-18mins.

And again- this guide is not for boosters who don't enjoy the game whom just want the achievement.

This took me a while, but if you've downloaded the Undead Nightmare DLC, you can get this on there as well.

Once Mexico is unlocked, travel to El Presido. Use the cannon right next to the front gate, and go to town on the undead. They spawn very quickly and in large numbers. You can get this from scratch in about 5-10 minutes. Plus, you will never get attacked from behind.

When you shoot quickly and there are none there, wait about 10 seconds and another wave will spawn.

02 Jul 2011 04:53

There is plenty of ways to do this all of them at El Presidio, the simplest and easiest is on the Undead Nightmare DLC.
All you have to do is get on the cannon that sits on a small tower next to the main gate and scan the road going into the fort. Simply blast any so zombies you see, remembering to move the aim to the cannons limit of it's horizontal aim this refreshs the road of zombies. With this you should be done in no time.

Theres two other ways, both exactly the same but one done in either the main single player game or in online free roam. I would recommend doing it online as it also helps you rank up in order to get the achivement for reaching the maximum level. It also has the added advantage of allowing you to bring a friend along to help.

All you have to do is draw attention to your self by killing someone or throwing a stick of dynamite and then clearing out the fort of any lawmen. Then just get on the gattaling gun on side of the main gate and just cut up any approaching Mexican soldiers. Be sure to press the left or right buttons on the D-Pad to get a better camera angle as some enemy's can hide in areas that can only be hit at certain angles.
Some soldiers will attack you from the side gate, if you have friend helping you he can keep an eye on that side door allowing you to stay on the gun. If not you'll have to keep an eye on the radar and when soldiers come round your side you can deal with them before they become too much trouble.

Without a friends help you are likely to die a few times but it's easy enough to get back on the horse.
It's also worth noting that it's 500 kills needed in one single game mode. So if you do it in free roam you need 500 kills regardless of how many you get during single player. However the kills can be shared across the the three types of mounted gun.

Thought I'd make a video about this, to get this very easily you need undead nightmare dlc, once you are about 3/4 of the way through the story line you will be able to enter mexico, in mexico go to El Persidio (I believe that's how it's spelled) and just like in the video climb the ladder and start shooting zombies, just look to your left and back again and zombies should respawn.

If people start showing up and they have no heads that means the game has glitched out and the kills you make from that point do not count, if this happens to you just kill yourself and press Y to restart by nearest town. This shouldn't take long, i had 0 kills took me around 20-25 minutes to get to 500.

There are plenty of ways to get this trophy, the first method is the most time consuming but also the safest method without dying. Go to El Matadero and climb the ladder by the safehouse that's available to purchase. Use the mounted Maxim Gun on the roof and kill every civilian in sight. The cool thing is that you won't get any bounty so the sheriffs won't be after you and the civilians keep respawning. Keep killing people until the trophy unlocks. You can view your mounted weapon stats in the main menu.

The other method is by playing online, host a private game and head to El Presidio in Mexico. Get your bounty up by shooting at one of the TNT barrels that's inside the place to make sheriff's go after you. Use the cannon on the left of the north side entrance and kill every sheriff that's after you. Do this until the trophy unlocks.

If you have the Undead Nightmare DLC then you can unlock this trophy in about 20 minutes using the same El Presidio method. You must unlock Mexico in Undead Nightmare by completing missions.

All single player and multiplayer kills count towards this achievement. You will need to earn kills online or offline, they do not stack towards the same statistics.

You will encounter the Gatling Gun on a regular basis throughout the games story missions. when you do encounter the Gatling Gun kill as many people as possible. There are several missions where you will be told to use this gun.

  • Browning (Doesn't always register kills)
  • Gatling Gun
  • Cannon

If you unlock this while playing through the main story you will be very lucky. The best way to earn this achievement is to start a private free-roam session and head to the fort in Mexico called El Presidio. In this fort you will find several Cannons and a Gatling Gun. Once inside alert the army, you can now sit on a cannon or gun of choice and gun down the army as they come to arrest you. The cannon on the cliff edge on the northern side seems to be the best cannon to use.

It is not possible to complete the trophy in a regular campaign, only in the Undead nightmare add-on.

Everything is possible. After completing the story and getting 100% in a bureau agent suit and mask (so that the lawmen would not interfere and not spoil the level of honor), he climbed onto the roof of a house in El Matadero, where he shot with a Browning machine gun in ~ 30 minutes of real time. It's better to start in the morning.
