How to unlock the Buckin' Awesome achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

In order to unlock this achievement, you have to lasso one of these horses in the wild and break them. All three horses can be found in all three areas of the game, but some are more common in particular areas than others. The way to track whether you've broken them or not is to go to the local General Stores and look at the last three horse licenses available. At the start, they are all marked "unavailable". Once you've broken one of the horses, they will become available for purchase.

The Kentucky Saddler - A golden-colored horse with yellow/gold hair, this one can be broken during a quest/mission that you do at Bonnie's ranch. When you go out to break horses with her and her father, she will tell you to break a golden-colored horse. That is the Kentucky Saddler. thanks to geegers78 for pointing out that after this mission the deed will be available but you may still need to break another saddler.

Hungarian Half-Bred - A white/grey-colored horse with a black nose, this one can typically be found in a plain to the east of Escalera. If you look on your map in-game, you'll see this plain marked with three running horses on it. You can also find them in the far east of Mexico, out by El Matadero and Casa Madrugada. Also, as pointed out by Jack Burton, you have to break a Hungarian Half-bred for the stranger task: Love is the Opiate. thank you.

American Standardbred - A completely black horse, this one can typically be found in a plain to the south of Beecher's Hope in West Elizabeth and occasionally in Tall Trees.

Again, these are the MOST COMMON places to find these horses. It does not mean they are the ONLY places. Rarely, you might find one of these horses accidentally mixed into the fold in New Austin or West Elizabeth. Credit goes to Jakob187 for the clarity.

In the event that the achievement does not pop upon breaking the last horse it is suggested you first check for the three specific horse deeds at any general store. If they are all there then simply go out horse hunting and break them all again and it should pop as CHEEZUS points out. You can't just buy the deeds, you have to break the horses.

Didn't work for me. Never popped up even though I had all the deeds and broke all the horses again and again like xCHEEZUSx suggested. Just wouldn't give me the achievement for some unknown reason. :(

Perhaps these links should be added to the guide. They're from the extremely useful Red Dead wiki and they include pictures & some more alternate locations. I know after reading the guides on here I was still having trouble figuring out which horse was which.

I did not need to re-break another Saddler. Found both near where described, although in a wider area (just look for horses and you'll eventually find each mixed in). +1.

@CHEEZUS I would go back and double check your deeds, and if you do actually have them all then I would try finding and breaking them all again and as you do try to find a hitching post to save each breed. Hope it pops for you without too much frustration.

great guide @heiwaboke!

it should be noted, even though you break the kentucky saddler in the "tamed passions" mission with bonnie, you still need to find one to break in the WILD.

fyi, the kentucky's deed will be available to purchase in the store after you complete the mission so that's not a good method to checking off whether you have broke it or not. i suggest you find and break the kentucky again, from the wild, soon after finishing the 'tamed passions' mission so you know what you're looking for. ;)

This achievement is to break 3 different breeds of horses. First you need to get the lasso from mission "Wild Horses, Tamed Passions"... which is where you'll get the Kentucky Saddler. I believe it's the 3rd quest from Bonny. The Kentucky Saddler is golden pearl in color.

The American Standardbred are in the Great Plains and Tall Trees. This horse is lean and black in color. I found mine south of Beecher's Hope and Dixon's Crossing.

The Hungarian Half-bred’s are most commonly found in (and all over) Mexico. It's white in color with a black face. Look in in Nuevo Paraiso, Mexico (North East of Torquemada; or above "Coronas" of Diez Coronas on the map), usually found roaming alone, away from other herds.

A description of what each horse looks can be found at the local market seller and at the bottom of the list to buy it has horses, the bottom 3 are the rare ones which you have to find. Press Y for info.

Thanks @biggerballblat

How can you tell which horse you just broke?
0

By Daromar88 on 24 May 2010 19:05
One way to tell is by going into a general store and looking at the horses you can buy. If it's still locked you havent broken it yet.

The American Standardbred is a b!tch. In 45 minutes I found only 1 and it ran away while I help RB and had it lassoed then I chased it into a group of 4 bears which killed me; it then took another 50 minutes before I found another one.

I've encountered the American Standardbred on two separate occasions in Tall Trees. Once while i was being chased by bandits, and later just before being mauled by a bear. I've not seen one since.

I broke these three horses, got the deeds, etc. - got no achievement, so I went back and re-broke all three of them again, TWICE more, ...still no achievement.
The deeds show up in my satchel, and they come when I access them, but never received the Buckin' Awesome achievement.

The Hungarian Half-bred is a horse breed featured in Red Dead Redemption. It is among the top tier of horse available. The Hungarian Half-bred is white in color with a black face. They are only found in Nuevo Paraiso, Mexico (North East of Torquemada; or above "Coronas" of Diez Coronas on the map), usually found roaming alone, away from other herds. Of the 3 fastest horses in the game this breed is the slowest. However they are still faster than any normal speed horses.

The Kentucky Saddler is a horse breed featured in Red Dead Redemption. It is among the top tier of horse available. The Kentucky Saddler is golden pearl in color.

This horse is broken at the end of the mission Wild Horses, Tamed Passions. Also, this is one of the three fastest horses of the game. It is the balanced of the three with decent speed and health.

The American Standardbred is a horse breed featured in Red Dead Redemption. It is among the top tier of horse available. Among the top three these have the greatest speed, making them the fastest horses in the game, however their health and stamina is weaker by comparison. They are only found in West Elizabeth.

To "Break" a horse, all you have to do is lasso them, hop on, and survive long enough to get them to stop bucking. Now, the Kentucky Saddler is story related, and you get one after doing the mission "Wild Horses, Tamed Passions." The American Standardbred is most often found in West Elizabeth (which is the Northern part of the map where Tall Trees and Blackwater are, for anyone who was wondering), and is a fully black horse (black maine and body). Finally, the Hungarian Half-bred is found in Diez Coronas in Nuevo Paraiso, and it is pure white, but with a dark muzzle. After you have broke these three horses, the achievement will unlock.
Cheers!

heiwaboke and mantrapolo have 2 very good, detailed solutions guides!

FYI: THIS ACHIEVEMENT HAS BEEN REPORTED AS GLITCHED. PLEASE READ THE COMMENT SECTION BELOW FOR FURTHER DETAILS BEFORE VOTING NEGATIVELY. Thanks!

it should also be noted, even though you break the kentucky saddler in the "tamed passions" mission with bonnie, YOU STILL NEED TO FINE ONE TO BREAK IN THE WILD in order to unlock this achv.

The kentucky saddler is golden/blonde pearl in color and can be found near new austin and east of macfarlane's ranch.

fyi, the kentucky's deed will be available to purchase in the store after you complete the mission so that's not a good method to checking off whether you have broke it or not. i suggest you find and break the kentucky again, from the wild, soon after finishing the 'tamed passions' mission so you know what you're looking for. ;)

Here is a visual representation on how to get this achievement. This achievement is not difficult at all but it may take you some time to get the horses by your lasso and "break" all 3 of them

All credit goes to Rooster Teeth.

Even though you break the Kentucky Saddler during the main story, you will have to find it and break it again in the wild. Often near Cholla Springs or East of Macfarlane's ranch, though I found mine near Rio Bravo.

All three horses can only be found in specific locations. If you aren't sure if you already broken one of them then check a general store, if you are able to purchase any of the three horses then it means you've already broken (tamed) it.

It's rare but this trophy can sometimes glitch and not unlock when you meet the requirements. It seems that when you first break the Kentucky Saddler in the "Wild Horses, Tamed Passions" mission, it does not count for this trophy. To fix this just go south of MacFarlane's Ranch to break it again.

  • The Kentucky Saddler is actually quite common in McFarlane's Ranch and you will probably break one early on in the game. It has a white face and is a brown, black or light brown horse.
  • Hungarian Half-Bred can be only found in Mexico and is common around the Diez Coronas area. Usually travels with other horses. It's a little bigger than other horse's and it's greyish white with a dark face.
  • American Standardbred is all black and a little bigger than other horses. It looks really healthy compared to most horses and you will instantly recognize it during the day. It can be found all across Beecher's Hope and the Great Plains area.

Before you can attempt this you will need to earn the lasso and complete the tutorial mission "Wild Horses, Tamed Passions". This mission will show you how to lasso and break a horse. Once you have completed the tutorial you can then proceed to find the horses required for this achievement.

Kentucky Saddler: (Story Related)
This horse is a pale golden colour, you will be rewarded with this horse for completed the "Wild Horses, Tamed Passions" mission.

American Standardbred: (Great Plains/Tall Trees)
The Standardbred stands out from the rest of the horses due to its black colour. This is probably the most obvious horse in a herd.

Hungarian Half-bred: (Mexico)
This horse tends to blend in with other horses due to its white colouring and dark face. Some of the other pale coloured horses look the same from a distance.

We need to tame the White, Black and Golden horses.
Hungarian half-breed - white, grazing in Mexico, a little to the right on the map from Diez Coronas.
American Trotter - black, grazing on the Great Plains, near the Blackwater. I noticed that it was only during the day.
Kentucky Horse - golden, grazing on top of the map from Armadillo, there is also a gallows tree nearby.
All horses can be caught anywhere. If you see it, tame it right away, no need to tie it.
