How to unlock the How the West Was Won achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

This is the Great Legend Shemp Howard here coming at you live from Armadillo people! Today I am going to let you in on my little secret on How the West Was Won.

The best place I have received XP is Twin Rocks! TWIN ROCKS PEOPLE! In the old days prior to the patches I would get about 1750 XP in under a minute on this hideout.

Currently if you clear this hideout in under a minute you will average about 600 XP. 600 XP a minute is great XP. When you go to Twin Rocks you will want to bring a Evans Repeater (from the Pike's Basin hideout) and/or a Bolt Action Rifle (from the Tumbleweed hideout). The first time you do the Twin Rocks hideout make sure you go inside for the Mauser pistol. It is a great weapon to take out the Walton's Gang from up close.

Before you start make sure you have a full bar of Dead Eye and make sure you have multiplayer aiming set to Casual in the options. For the best score make sure you kill all 22 Walton's Gang members in one kill combo. If you kill them under the one minute mark you will get an average of 600 XP.

Yes there is a replay it's either the left or right dpad. I wouldn't use casual I would use expert you get more xp that way!

I have updated the guide to show how to replay the hideout and why I prefer casual targeting.

WaNTed x TaNK is right if you can put it on normal and do it just as fast as you see in my video then give normal a go. I couldn't get it done fast enough using normal. I do use normal when I play online, but when I power level I use casual aiming. Remember if you get this done with your max combo at 21 or 22 (killing everyone in the same combo) in the 53-59 sec mark you can get 1750 XP.

I have gotten the cleaned house even by dying so I know it is not based on time. I think it is based on keeping them within the confines of their hideout.

My average is around 1300+ XP, and that is what you will normally get if you kill 20+ guys in your kill combo.

Great advice. I can't quite pull this off like you but it's definitely better than what I was doing before.

Also I appreciate someone who can make a video playing a game like this and not feel like he has to curse every other word like a child who just learned swears.

heiwaboke I didn't proclaim that! I AM THE GREAT LEGEND SHEMP HOWARD! Get used to it. Aquired the name for my mad Gears of War skills. Also I am a Max Legend in the game of Red Dead Redemption. I have Legend up a maximum of 5 times. So not only am I the Great Legend in Gears I am the Great Legend in Red Dead Redemption. Don't get mad buddy! It is mainly just a internet persona used to entertain my fans. Don't get mad.

By GrandmasterALK on 08 Aug 2010 12:18
LOL! I only boosted once and that was to get my cheevos winning games in a row. I am actually very good at this game. I usually always get in the top three on the winning team, and usually first place on the losing team.

Please note for achievement purposes this guide still is the fastest way to get this achievement....If you are a low rank and have not done the Legend up feature I highly recommend clearing the cache and starting as a rank 1 playing in a offline/non-patched system link game until you hit rank 49. Once you become a 49 install the latest title update and purchase the Legends and Killers DLC. One you hit rank 50 you will get this achievement and then you can legend up and get the DLC achievement for Legending up.

By Shemp Howard on 09 Aug 2010 20:10
why do you need to get rank 49 surely you can just get level 50 and then do the legend thing?

0
0
By Shemp Howard on 04 Sep 2010 18:20
no you see i havent updated it so i can still do the boost but why do you need to get lvl 49 then go back to online and get to lvl 50 in order to get legend
0
0
By PHT999 on 04 Sep 2010 19:18
and also how do you switch between targets in dead eye so quickly?
0
0
By PHT999 on 04 Sep 2010 20:01
The reason why I do level 49 then take it online to update is because if you want to get the achievement time stamped. You know to where it says this guy one the achievement on said date. That is the main reason say for new people that get the game and want to use this guide. Then they can go into Legend and get that achievement to if they have the DLC.

Deadeye for that hideout I did in Casual aiming setting. I made sure I had full gauge of deadeye. I would hold LT to target my first guy, then I would activate dead eye and then I would tap the RS right or left depending on where the next targets where on my screen...When I had max targets painted I would let go and fire away! Evans Repeater is like a dang machine gun...LOL!

Does playing offline without the patch still work now? Also, I would have to play this on the 360, right? Because you can't play unpatched games on the One...?

UPDATE: Game crashes if I try to play without update...
UPDATE 2: Uninstalled all DLC and now I can play offline system link!

man i am glad i got this before the nerf ;)
i never managed to do twin rocks in less than 55s, but doing it alone in a public roam, with casual aiming, using the dead eye and always getting 18, 20 or 22 chain gave me between 2000 and 3000xp more or less. same day i got to 50 for the chievo, i went legend and did around 13 levels in a few minutes.

now i'm a legend... with sucky weapons, hahaha. CBA to legend 3 or 4 more times. nah!

They might of leveled up. If they leveled up they start over back at level 1. It is kind of like prestige in Call of Duty. I currently am a level 37 because my stupud multiplayer data got corrupted, and I had the freaking Zebra and Legend 5. Oh well. I am still using this method to level up so I may once again have my Zebra mount.

The only reason I talked about getting to level 49 when playing the offline mode via an unpatched game was you will get to level 49 or almost to level 50...Then you would install the title update...Play it online and get to level 50. You do this because then when you are connected online and all patched with the title updates you can get your achievement time stamped because you would be connected to Xbox Live. Don't know what time stamped is? Well I do not want to explain that...Sorry...

See most of you will already have the title updates...So you are not going to want to uninstall your title updates because then you would get reset to level 1. So just play like I do in the video and you will still get about 600+xp per minute. It is currently the fastest way to level up in Red Dead Redemption!

By Shemp Howard on 20 Feb 2011 20:10
If you just want to go for achievements then yeah you could delete all patches and updates and play the multiplayer free roam in an offline system link game. Make sure you can actually do the hideout in under a minute though before you delete all the patches. It should take less than six hours if you can do it fast enough. Remember once you start leveling up don't accept any title updates from the game. Get your level 50 done before you level up. If you want the achievement time stamped get to almost level 49 then download the title updates to the game. That way when you hit level 50 your achievement will be time stamped.

This solution involves getting into a glitched Online public free roam. You will know you are in one when you go to whistle your horse, it does not come. The next step is to go in the options menu and put your online aiming to expert (This is because you get extra XP if you go in expert aiming). Next, go to any gang hideout on the map. You have to be the only one at the hideout(Basically, if the hideout is flashing, don't go to it!) As soon as you enter a gang hideout, it will end. You will get anywhere from 200-400 XP(Depending on which hideout you go to. Twin Rocks gives 400XP). When it ends, press left on the D-pad to replay. Repeat this over and over until you reach lvl 50. Now all you need to for now is constantly press left for however long you need to. It look me about 3 hours to get from 25 to 50. That's pretty much it.

Oh, and I use TA daily so comment or message me if you are having trouble following this,

Still works as of July 2016 with backwards compatibility smile

I forgot to mention after you back away until the symbol re-appears you have to start walking towards it to activate it again. also I found it a comfort to 'xbox live avoid players because they have a low skill level to me as a reason' I came into contact with. it just made me feel better. also for the last couple of ranks each time I had to kill1 enemy on the roof and sometimes 1 on the ground aswel. it was weird. and once they appeared I had to kill them each time I replayed (the roof guy everytime) for it to complete the hideout. you can snipe him from wherever you start it but combine that with the fact it was night and raining and the last ranks were pretty streesful. it just emphasizes how you must utalise the original glitch as soon as you realize you have it. and make the most of it when you do. im done now anyway after over 3 and half hours. good luck glitch hunting guys

I can not seem to get into regular lobby's. Which for me makes it easy to level up due to no body to kill. But damn, after getting the level up, it kind of sucks to not be able to get into a normal lobby. Oh well! Still works though, I kinda found this out on my own, but at least now I can see that it is not just me that figured this out.

Woohoo it's working!!! =D

BUTTTTTTTT, after about two-dozen times, I now have to kill a few people. If you back out of Twin Rocks and return, it should reset and you can repeat the process.

Just go try it out. You'll be able to find out pretty quickly if it's still working or not.

Just read a post on YouTube where someone claimed to have gotten in a glitched lobby a month ago or so (so in June 2019), but he said it took him an eternity to get it. So if this is correct, it might still work, but has become not only random, but really rare as well. Question is... Is that worth the try? In the hours searching and not finding a glitched lobby you could level up the normal way as well...

Especially as I said, I don't see a point in trying it for hours since I keep getting thrown into the same three or max four lobbies over and over again - as if there weren't others anymore...

As of August 12, 2020 I can attest that it is still possible to get into a glitched lobby. It even happened on multiple occasions that night. I didn't do anything special, I just loaded up normal multiplayer free roam and noticed the game was acting very weird. I went over to Twin Rocks and the glitch kicked in. Only took about 2.5 hours to get from level 21 to level 50.

I know this is old as dirt but for anyone seeing this in the future, these servers aren't "glitched". They're modded. So when you find a server like this, you're playing on someone's modded server. That's why it's near impossible to find one these days because no one is using a modded server in RDR1 in the year 2023.

Not sure why Oncogene27 is lying. I joined a server a few nights ago. Straight away without even doing anything I was levelled up to 50. Have it in my clips for proof. Second I joined server it levelled up completely from level 1-50 in less than a minute.
It was also the first server I found so they are out there.

Never played RDR's multiplayer. I have the GoTY Edition. First lobby I get into had about 4-5 randoms. I followed the above guide and found that the glitch still works as of 16 December 2014. Went from Level 1 to 28 in about 35 minutes. I expect to be at Level 50, like other posters have said, within 3 hours altogether.

Great guide!

The glitch kinda works, but twice in the last few minutes my game (playing backward compatible) has crashed.

I noticed someone with a posse score of over 190,000 and this player had almost 175,000 of that score alone. Joined the posse and teleported to Twin Rocks. I completed the Gang Hideout three times within seconds, until some random came along and hit continue rather than replay.

It seems so. Unfortunately for us. Although the last Title Update for the game should have been released in 2014. And it worked for some afterwards. Maybe they just shut down a couple of servers for this assold game. I don't know. I've been trying to get this to work now for a couple of hours too. In normal, expert and friendly public roams. But I keep getting thrown into the same non-glitches lobbies. Or I'm stuck in the loading screen... roll

If someone manages to do it could we please get a confirmation that it still works - if it does.

this still works, I am doing it right now. in 3 hours of just pressing left every 10 seconds I have gone from 17-47 rank. its tedious but easy so I have been online doing other things while I do it. every once in a while somebody might come into your area and the glitch stops as the hideout symbol will then disapear. people will be invisible to you though aswel as the not having a horse thing. when others come near you (you see them on the map) just back away from the hideout until the symbol appears again and carry on again pressing left every 7-10 seconds. this is why its best to keep an eye on whats happening incase randoms show up. its only happened 4 or so times in 3 hours and puts you a minute or so behind schedule when it does happen. this is the 3rd time this glitch has happened to me in 2 weeks only this time I didn't have anything else to do so I stayed until I hit rank 50. this is the easiest method you will ever find to level up so when it happens stick it out. I don't want to imagine how it would take to do this legit

The way i did it was going trough Pike's Basin on double XP weekend. solo you can do it in about 5 mins, maybe even less, i made a video of it on youtube. you gain about 1800-1900 xp per run on a normal day (no double xp)

hope it helps!

NICE! 23 levels in 1 1/2 hour on trip-xp weekend. I couldn't run through the level as fast as five minutes but taking my time, racking up dead-eye bonuses and not dying worked well too.

Ok i find the other guides very useful, but i find doing the Tesoro Azul Hideout much easier. Even though i have not obtained this achievement yet, i have leveled up soo much doing this.

Ok you want to start at the main entrance with a rifle and there should be to two guards next to the gates, and two guys at the tops of two buildings, Use dead eye to get rid of them quickly. Then change to a automatic weapon, or some thing which has a good rate of fire and fast reload times, a mauser pistol works very well. pick off the banditos at the church and the building behind it as those guys tend to kill you pretty easily, MAKE SURE YOU DONT KILL THE WHORES!!!! even though you earn $10 when you kill them, if you keep them alive you will see that you are given XP for doing so. The more whores alive the more XP. Once you get rid of the people around the church, head to the top of it. You will find a High Power Pistol, so pick that up. If you run out of bullets on your mauser use you High power pistol now.

Now the reinforcements spawn (they will spawn outside of the hideout walls). shoot the ones who are close to you with the pistol and the long distance ones with a long distance rifle, such as the bolt action or springfield rifle (the springfield is good but its reload time is very poor). You will see banditos on horses throwing fire bottles over the hideout walls, kill them as quick as you can as they can kill the whores and even you!!!

Then after that you should be done. If you do it solo you are gaurenteed 1100+ XP seeing as you've done it fast enough, and not killed as many whores, and in a good time.

For me in solo it will take around 2/3mins with about 1500XP each time.

You wont need to delete you system cache, you can do in either public, private or system link.

Hope my guide has helped. Its certainly helped me!!

The places that I went to are Tesoro Azul and Pike's Basin.

Tesoro Azul is my favorite place to go. If you go there do not kill the whores. If you kill the whores you get 10 xp for all 5. but if you don't kill them, at the end of the hideout you get 250xp for saving all 5. The fastest time I beat this place is 1 minute 32 seconds. I get around 1100-1200 every time I do this. You can do this hideout by yourself or with one other friend, I tried doing it with two other people but I only got 600-800 xp every time.

Pike's Basin will take a little longer than Tesoro Azul. The fastest time I got on here was 5 minutes. Kill all the people there and try to get a high kill chain. To finish the hideout faster make sure you ride your horse to all 3 objective places. When you finish the hideout you will get around 1700-1900 xp. Hope this helps you guys out!

There is a glitch tutorial available on youtube where you can go from rank 0-50 in 45 minutes. It works and the achievement will unlock.

So I thought I would give a text guide on the glitched lobby

Now it is a glitched lobby and not a hacked one, when I got in the lobby I was the only one in there.

*search for a game on public free roam
*Once you are in a game press up on the d-pad to summon your horse, if no horse comes then you have managed to find a glitched lobby
*So once you have found a glitched lobby, fast travel to Armarillo, once there go into the Sheriffs office
*You will find 3 guys lying on the floor and it will look blurry with a heart beat sound, shoot one of them to trigger the glitch

That is it, wait about 45 minutes and you will hit rank 50

*Notes* If you are going to leave the game idle make sure you use a wired controller, if your controller turns off you get kicked out
If you need any of the kills, 500 with pistol, rifle or any other weapon, including head shots, every bullet fired into the bodies on the floor count as a kill
If you encounter invisible weapons in the glitched lobby, you can melee the NPC's to trigger the glitch
On occasions your XP can stop and you just need to shoot or melee the NPC again to set it off again

Now I managed to find a glitched lobby on first attempt and was alone, I left it idle, controller turned off and I got kicked out. I went from 5-44, so I looked for another glitched lobby after an hour of searching I couldn't find one.

EDIT #1: I managed to get the cheev on first lobby I entered, there was a lot of other players, but I headed into the sheriff's office and the guys kept falling down from the ceiling, some of them didn't trigger it, I kept shooting all the guys in their till the glitch triggered

EDIT #2: thewintman has commented that the sheriff's office isn't the only place to encounter the NPC's that trigger that glitch, he said; "I'd add that the three NPCs (Walton Gang) were outside the railroad station in Armadillo for me; once on the wooden decking to the left of the main door (if stood outside), and once on the dirt road intersection between the railroad station and saloon."

If you're like me, RDR has been sitting uncompleted in your game's list for about 11 years now. I would occasionally scroll past and eyeball the list, looking at the massive amount of multiplayer achievements that I never unlocked. This achievement, along with a few others, gave me definite doubts about my desire to return to this game and complete it. Turns out, getting to level 50 really isn't too bad. I've been playing off and on the past few weeks cleaning up the co-op missions as well as the miscellaneous online achievements.

First off, there is no way to glitch your way to the highest rank. The most consistent and quickest way to level up as of May 2021 is to do the Twin Rocks hideout with the bolt action rifle. It’s the strongest rifle and is effective at any range. To get this gun, you need to start your free roam session at the Warthington Ranch gang hideout. There is always an enemy or two equipped with a bolt action. You unlock the bolt action at level 41 I think, but by that time you should know the best way to gain xp and won’t need a guide.

Now that you have the bolt action, head to Twin Rocks. This hideout can be completed in under a minute once you know where all the enemies spawn and get good at headshotting. Assuming you headshot the majority of enemies and get the "Clean House" bonus, you'll end up with around 600xp in a minute or less.

I've made a video showing where to find the bolt action as well as completing Twin Rocks in under a minute. This can be a bit of a grind, but I've been playing occasionally for the last few weeks while also going after the other multiplayer achievements. I think I'm level 39 at the time of writing this and it's been pretty fun for me overall. Good luck dive

You will be required to play various online modes to rank up your character to level 50. This is a rather slow process but should come at a fair speed while playing online. You will earn XP for various activities you take part in, as well as killing other playings and completing objectives.

  • Rank 10 - 8910 xp
  • Rank 20 - 42810 xp
  • Rank 30 - 106710 xp
  • Rank 40 - 203910 xp
  • Rank 50 - 337110 xp

As you progress through each rank you will earn new rewards such as weapons, horses, game modes, PVP Challenges and Free Roam Challenges. Just progress at your own speed and you should hit level 50 in no time.

You can replay hideouts as many times as you like, if you keep doing this on your own in a private match you can earn anywhere between 1,500xp and 3,000xp per hideout.

0
0

This will most likely be your last trophy as it takes quite a while to reach level 50. To reach level 50 you need approximately 337,110 XP. Take advantage of Triple XP weekends, clear Hideouts and just have fun. If you want to boost XP on your own the best place is clearing Tesoro Azul or Solomon's Folly, if you want to play with a friend then the best place is Pike's Basin.

When playing Solomon's Folly solo, make sure to play in a Friendly Free Roam session, that way people playing online can't kill you. This hideout can be done in less than 2 minutes once you learn the respawns. There are only 32 gang members to take out and if you chain all 32 members, you get about 800 XP per every run with the latest patch and 2,200 XP without the patch.

Any XP that you earn from the Undead Nightmare DLC also counts for this trophy so you may play that if you wish.

Note: If you have an original release copy of Red Dead Redemption, then you can delete the latest patch (v1.07) and play offline in a LAN lobby. You will get triple the XP than you normally would. Digital copies of the game and the GOTY edition have this patch pre-installed so there is no possible way to delete it, only the original copy has this option.

If you do decide to take this route and delete the patch, then take a look at this guide for the best possible way to boost offline, credit goes to Eternal21: Level 1 to 50 in 8 hours.

Also note that deleting this patch will reset your stats offline, so make sure you delete the patch before you play online whilst signed into PSN. Re-installing the patch, however, does not reset your online stats.
