How to unlock the In A Van Down By The River achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

I got both "The Big Bluff" and "In A Van Down By The River" achievement to unlock pretty easily actually. For the "In A Van Down By The River" I simply just went into a private match with a buddy and checked through the hand until one of us unlocked the achievement. The key here is to 1) You need the river card to change your fortune (meaning the 5th card to turn up suddenly gives you a better hand) and 2) You need the hand to go to a showdown (don't fold the hand right away and play it through until you flip up your cards and compare your hands)

So, two player game and and we both keep checking (pressing A) until it unlocks?

Eventually yes, but it may take several hands each for this to happen. Just keep on doing it and it should unlock.. Shouldnt take more than 5-10 minutes each.

took me 4 hands using this solution. I played against 1 other person and had big bluff and in a van down by the river in 4 hands! awesome.

"Shouldnt take more than 5-10 minutes each."

Well me and my boosting partner played over an hour and only one of us got the achievement...

Just a little tip to hopefully make it go faster for those needing it, if you (and your partner) keeps hitting "check" (when you're allowed), it will get all the cards out on the table fast.

And I don't know if it counts and gives you the achievment this way (but should in theory I supose); If you go all in right away it will make all the cards show right off the bat making each round last 30 seconds.

It works, just keep hitting A over and over until you get the achievement. You don't even need to think about it, just down to luck at that point. Great solution! I thought this would be a tough one until I read this one. Life saver :)

I can confirm that the constant pressing of A is all it takes to get this achievement. It all boils down to your patience and luck.

Well that's obviously why I said shouldn't and never takes.. In my experience and in my friends experience as well it didn't even take close to that long. Maybe you were doing something wrong, there's really no other way to way to do this faster so I don't know why you would be giving me negative feedback.

Unfortunately, the odds of the winning by the river are slim even when playing one-on-one and absurdly slim with 6 players. So this is about playing against the odds. Rather than folding when you're holding nothing, play it out... even if you're holding nothing before the river you have better than 1 out of 8 chance of coming up with a pair, which might get the win if you're opponent was holding a lesser pair since the flop. In general, don't bet aggressively because if the opponent folds on your bluff, you don't get the chance to turn it around.

At the same time, there is a lot of luck involved in any case. I got the achievement when I was dealt a pair that turned into a flush on the river.

So more than anything this boils down to two things:
1. Play against one other person to maximize the odds of the river making a difference.
2. Play any hand you're dealt to the end.

I got this using your suggestion of staying in every hand. I just checked and called every time, only folding when the river card came up and left me with nothing at all. I did this against 4 other players and it was pure luck. Actually my wife got it for me... I had to leave the room to make dinner, she was reading a book. I told her to just keep pressing A. When I came back I had it.

I would also suggest chasing flushes, as you usually get a flush on the turn or the river. At least that's how I got it this weekend...

Again, this is very easy and relatively quick with 2 people, It only took us about 30 minutes for both of us. Why? because the cards that you get, and when you get them greatly impact when you can get this achievement. Basically, both of us just kept calling, not raising or bidding high (this does not matter, it just kept us from running out of money) but we told each other our cards (which does not matter) but the one with the "Higher" cards "Best Hand" has to stay in the lead until the 5th card that is laid down on the table. It has to be the 5th card that is laid down that causes the "Winning" person to all of a sudden loose. If this is confusing, someone there should have a basic understanding of poker-if for no other reason than to try and understand what is happening. Otherwise you both can just keep playing until you 2 get it, which i know for a fact you will. Like i said, it is best and easiest to play with only 2 people, in my opinion.

I got it in a public game... it's just the luck of the draw really.

This achievement is luck-based, and can be earned randomly. This is best done with 2 people, as your luck chances are increased with the smallest amount of players. To increase your chances of winning the achievement, play each card until the hand is over. Be sure neither player folds out, as this will decrease your chances. Also, have communication between each player so you know who has what cards.

Check out the Achievement Trading Thread for boosting partners.

"You have to be losing the hand at the point that there are only four cards on the table ("The Turn") and then have the fifth card change the outcome, making you the winner. As a quick example: if you had a pair of Jacks and someone else had a pair of Kings after the Turn, you would be losing (obviously). If the River is a Jack, giving you three of a kind and the win, the trophy is yours". Credit to OnuosFan for this tip.

This trophy can be easy or a pain, since you never know how the cards will come out on the table. It may take a few tries before obtaining this bad boy. What I suggest is to play a game in a public match and play as normally as you would. When the last card pops up, it's either a miss or hit for this trophy. Keep playing and you will eventually get it. See Pa-Pa-Pa-Poker Ace for tips on how to play poker.
