How to unlock the Into the Sunset achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

This achievement is called "Into the Sunset" and to get it you must complete the mission " The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed."

This is the last story mission of the epilogue and though it does not end the story exactly there is a dramatic change in the game, and YES you can continue to play after this achievement is complete.

I think you need to have completed all other missions before this one, as you can do them out of order, as in Uncles before your sons. If you do this, then completing "The Last Enemy that shall be destroyed" does not get you the achievement which I've done. I could be missing something but would be good if someone could confirm, as otherwise my hard earned time trying to complete the game has been wasted :D

I have never heard of that situation. I'm sure someone who doesnt have the achievement can confirm for you once they have completed the game themselves.

It is story related and is probably the one and only achievement I have ever regretted unlocking.

While it is worth the most points it isn't the end of the main story; there is a mission with a stranger in Blackwater(after you unlock this) that will end the story.

There may be spoilers in the comments.

Possibly the most infuriating scene in a video game, besides the epic back-stab in MW2...

I killed 6 of them but I'm pretty sure you have a cattleman revolver so 6 shots is all you are going to get in deadeye. I wonder if you can hit Mr Ross... I don't think so, but man that scene made me really sad. even the events of the final stranger mission gave me no satisfaction whatsoever in the face of what had happened.

so a good ending then !!
seeing as most video games leave no emotional feeling after completion do they ..

the "little house on the prairie" type missions towards the end make all the more sense now ,

That was incrediably epic, you may want to add a Spoiler alert in the solution in case someone reads the comments before the achievement has been unlocked. +1 :)

I cried at the end. I used the High Powered pistol at the end, so I killed eight people.

So, since we have a spoiler alert, what DOES happen at the end of the game? Or should I just youtube it.

Starlin, I recommend finishing the story yourself first.

Wow, this is the achievement that's just put me over 50,000G and I wish I hadn't done the mission now :( My milestone is definitely not a happy one after this :( I didn't see it coming at all. WHY??? :(

Wow.... I went from kill no one to, I don't care who you are. Ohhh I used all 15 shots of my Mauser in the next part... Then I emptied a fully loaded Evans, followed by an explosive rifle right to the face. And it still left me full of rage.

Like what the fuck were they thinking!? They had so much more they could have added... Fuck me....
I just started appreciating the game.

I wouldn't worry about negatives. I tried to be as thorough as I could possibly be in my only solution I did, since that is the point of me posting was to try and be helpful, and one person did it wrong and claimed it was my fault. All of a sudden I had 4 negatives before I knew it. I guess you got negatives because people wanted the secret achievement to be spoiled for them?

Anyway I agree with rastal66 I had no satisfaction after the real "Redemption" as we saw all the stuff John had to endure to help out the Agents with a false sense of his sins being absolved. Don't want to spoil anything else here though.

Story related and cannot be missed. This trophy will unlock as soon as you finish this mission "The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed". For a detailed walkthrough see below:

This will be the last main story mission in the game and has a lot of cutscenes. As soon as the mission starts you will have to take out hordes of enemies coming up the hills. Uncle will help you until he tells you to get inside and trigger another cutscene, then you will fight another two waves of enemies coming from the north side of the map. After these waves John will tell his family to get in the barn. There will be yet another wave of enemies with rifles that can kill your family so stay close to them and take them out. Once you get to the barn there will be a cutscene and the mission will be over.
