How to unlock the Kingpin achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

"Fight off 8 unique players during your time on top during Land Grab in Multiplayer Free Roam."

Just in case the requirements of this achievement aren't clear, you have to:
- Start a Land Grab match in normal or hardcore free roam. Friendly free roam doesn't have Land Grab. It can be either a private or public session.
- Kill 8 unique attackers in that match while you're in possession of the land. If you lose your claim during the match, you can reclaim it and continue where you left off. If the match ends before you get 8 unique kills, you'll have to start over in a new match.
- "Unique" attackers means 8 different players. Killing the same player more than once won't count.
- Players in your posse don't count as attackers.
- To maintain your claim on the land, you have to stay inside the blue circle, but the attackers don't have to be inside the blue circle when you kill them. (Thanks to DeceptiveTen for the info.)

One way to unlock the achievement is for 9 or more players to boost it together in a private free roam session. You can probably get 2 or 3 or more players boosted during one Land Grab match. After the first match is over, the whole group will have to transport over to another town and start another match. It should only take about 30 minutes to get everyone boosted, assuming everyone has headsets and is working together. (Afterward, you may want to make sure everyone has the "Posse Up" achievement before everyone goes their separate ways.)

If you want to earn this achievement legit, I wish you luck, because I don't think it will be easy. The biggest problem with attempting this achievement in a random public free roam is that you can't count on 8 players challenging you. Even in a full free roam, a few players are probably going to be clearing hideouts, working on public enemy challenges, or whatever, and they won't drop what they're doing to play Land Grab with you. Unfortunately, you have no control over this, and it's why boosting might be necessary.

If you still want to try getting it legit, first make sure you have decent weapons: dynamite, high power or Mauser pistol, etc. Don't try this at rank 1 with nothing but a Cattleman revolver and a melee knife. If your rank is low, get weapons from hideouts or from killing higher-ranked players. Also, it wouldn't hurt to clear out one of the Liars and Cheats hideouts first, so you can bring the explosive rifle with you.

It will also help to use casual aim, to boost your ability to lock on to targets. This is no time to be an auto-aim snob! To do this, go to Options, Config and change your multiplayer targeting mode to casual. You can change it back to normal or expert after unlocking the achievement.

As you get kills, invite the players you've killed to join your posse. One reason for doing this is to help you keep track of who you've killed and who you haven't. The other reason is that if they join your posse, they may decide to stop trying to kill you, and you may even be able to convince them to help you.

This is a great solution, I especially like the bit at the end... very clever, hadn't considered it.

I don't boost, so I've been giving this one a go whenever I end up in a Free Roam with 8 guys all near one town... but you're right, even if they all play some aren't always good enough to get close enough to the land for a kill, so at best I'm getting 6-7 and it's quite frustrating.

I was able to do this in system-link with 10 people using the GOTY version. I used 2 dynamite sticks and killed the 9 others. Each player needs to be on their own console and have their own copy of the game. Great game for system link parties.

To those seeking help with this achievment, that's what Gaming Sessions are for. You'll have a lot better luck getting people to join you in a session than you will by posting comments to a solution, or by PM'ing the author of a solution written three years ago wink

You're definitely gonna have to set up a session for this one.

Also, if you are boosting. No need to keep track of who you've killed. Just get all 8 players to pool together, and blow them up with dynamite. If you don't have dynamite, just shoot them. But pooling together first is easier.

If you don't have dynamite, have a guy hold a stick out, kill them, and take the dynamite they drop.

This cheevo is extremely hard to get without boosting. So find 8 other players and start up a Private Free Roam session. Go to a Land Grab marker on the map (my group used Blackwater) and group up there. Have 8 ppl hug each other and the person who wants the cheevo has to start the Land Grab and throw a Dynamite stick at the 8 ppl.. They should all blow up instantly and your cheevo should pop :D. When everybody respawns go back to the Land Grab marker and its the next guy's turn. Easy as pie.

If the timer runs out before every one gets the cheevo, wait a few mins for the Land Grab marker to reset, or go to another one.

With this method it took my group about 10 minutes for every one to get the cheevo. You can also shoot the 8 players or kill them in what ever way you like, Dynamite is the fastest tho.
We were not in a Posse, i dont know if it matters for the cheevo. A big thanks to the people who helped me get it :D

This achievement is obviously harder then it was before , now that the servers are shocking!
Even trying to get your friends in a free roam for this achievement is difficult, these are the problems you mite encounter. This solution is for people wanting to boost the achievement.

.It taking you more then five minutes to get in a public free roam
If it takes more then 5-10 mins then I recommend you dashboard it and try again or try go into single player then go to multiplayer , or try get all your team into a friendly free roam , I Haven't had it were it has taken a century to load into a session on that mode , if you manage to get all your friends in there then posse up and search for a public session :)

.Joining in sessions (not having a gun in your hand or you or your friends or players in the session being invisible)
There are ways you can fix this problem , try going into the transport system and then cancel transport or just keep killing yourself with dynamite or jumping in the river or off a cliff and hopefully you will come back and have your guns and be able to see your team mates , if that doesn't work then try going into private match with your team then try going back to public free roam. Or go to one of the towns e.g. Armadillo and go into a Shootout game , should be a icon in town you can click on to get in one , then your team joins that then back out into public free roam with your team and hopefully you should all be fine.

.If your mount doesn't spawn when you call it
This one pretty much the same as the last one , just cancel transport or kill yourself.

The only other problems are the town foke and lawmen not spawning but that won't be a problem. Good luck getting your achievement and I hope this has helped some of you ! :D

This achievement is nearly impossible to get with all the glitches plaguing multiplayer these days, EVEN with 9 players trying to boost. On a recent session, we had 10 players, but half of them couldn't see each other. We made sure all the player dots were corralled in a small area and threw a stick of dynamite, but the "invisible" players did not die. After much trial and error, myself and a few other gamers finally figured this out:

1. Go to your xbox system settings and delete your Red Dead Redemption game install (if you have installed the game to your HD). Do NOT delete your game saves.

2. Go to the hard drive icon and clear your cache. This will delete all the title screen download updates and patches developers have released for any games or app you have played. Do NOT reformat your hard drive.

3. Get your 9 players together, and make sure EVERYONE has done steps 1 and 2. Once at the title screen, go to single player- do NOT ever enter a public roam, otherwise your game will pick up more of the "glitches". From single player, hit start and select private roam in the multiplier options. Once everyone's in a private free roam, invite to game and all meet up in a single private free roam.

4. Do not fast travel, do not kill anyone. I've witnessed that both fast traveling and killing people have resulted in those players characters going invisible. Once you start the achievement, you'll have to kill players, but I'd reserve that action until everyone is in one spot. As far as not being able to fast travel, just have everyone horseback it to a central location.

5. Ok now you can actually go for the achievement. In my session we all went to land grab in Escalera. One player activates the land grab and throws a stick of dynamite into the crowd. Make sure the person getting the achievement can actually see 8 players before they do so. Achievement should unlock.

As long as players run back to the location as soon as they respawn and are actually still visible, you can cycle 3 or 4 players each Land Grab match to get the achievement.

Once the Land Grab match ends, it will force you to wait 5 minutes or so until it becomes active again. We also found it helpful to have everyone leave town, thinking it might not reset unless we were a certain distance away. But I could be wrong about that- it might just be on a straight timer.

If you find yourself quite a large session with lots of people in MacFarlane's Ranch, you can easily get the achievement.

Make your way to the Foreman's office where the land grab is and get in cover behind the walls.

I'd recommend your load out is: bolt action rifle to kill the majority of people, high power pistol to kill people in close proximity when you're nearly dead, a carcano rifle to take out people who are sniping you, and a semi-auto shotgun to kill people who are coming up the stairs to where you are camping.

Watch for people throwing dynamite; you can tell someone is about to throw it by the sound it makes. They have to be quite close to the office to get the dynamite up to the top to kill you, so make sure you look close for them.

Try and get as many head shots as possible to make this quicker (aim your gun then move it slightly upwards).

Eight people are quite easy to kill using this method, you just have to hope you get into quite an active game.

Landgrab is a game mode which can be started from Free Roam which every player (also those without Undead Nightmare) can play, though only a player with the Undead Nightmare pack can start a game. The game is free-for-all and you have to hold a certain location such as Armadillo. The longer you keep enemy players out, the more points you will gain.

This achievement can be boosted by joining a private free roam with 9 players and starting a Land Grab game. For finding other players, please see the Achievement Trading Thread.

Land Grab locations:

- Armadillo
- Black Water
- Chuparosa
- Escalera
- Las Hermanas
- Thieves Landing
- Mac Farlane's Ranch

Although this trophy can be achieved without boosting, I strongly recommend against it as not everyone will choose to challenge you and the server issues mean it will be an exercise in futility.

Start a Private Match and invite your friends from there. Do note that you need 8 different players to join your game but no-one must be in a posse, else the trophy won't pop. When all 9 players are ready, start a match on Thieves Landing as that one seems to be the easiest and quickest. Once the match starts, you need to claim the land and kill 8 different players before the timer expires but you must not die or allow anyone else to come near the land you have taken control of whilst you're on top during the Land Grab. An easy way of killing 8 players quickly is to get everyone to huddle together and then have the person who is going for the trophy, lob Dynamite or a Fire Bottle into the group and kill everyone at once. Doing this will speed up the process and allow others to get the trophy in the same game if need be. You do not need to win the Land Grab.

If you have enough time to allow another player to get the trophy, the next person has to kill the Landholder to claim the land. After the time ends, you need to move to a new location so the next person can get the trophy. Usually, 2-3 people can get the trophy per location. Credit to Blaze Naruto Shippuden for this info.

Once you have killed the 8th unique player, the trophy will unlock.
