How to unlock the Spurred to Victory achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

Spurred to Victory
Complete 20 story missions without switching to a new horse at a hitching post. (Secret) (Missable)

I made the solution mainly for those who are having to replay to get the achievement so I made it as fool-proof as I could. After hearing from more players it seems my solution is verging on paranoid lol. But after trying 3 times to get the achievement, that's how I felt. It probably comes down to simply - Never hitch any horse to a hitching post.

If you are starting a new game and you follow these guidelines, this achievement will unlock after mission 21. Otherwise, check to see if you have at least 20 missions left in the game and make sure to follow the guidelines. Here is a link to a mission list. http://reddead.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Dead_Redemption_missions

TA member teamwrk has verified that missions replayed from the Stats > Missions menu ***DO NOT*** count toward this achievement.

Guidelines
*Do not hitch any horse, including your own, to a hitching post. The game will force you to do this a couple of times at the beginning. No worries, this will not reset the counter. ***A few players have told me that they hitched the stallion without resetting the counter but I still recommend playing it safe and staying away from hitching posts.

*Always whistle for your horse when allowed. Do not take a horse from a hitching post, not even your own, unless the game forces you to do so. If you see your horse is hitched, just whistle and it will come. ***This may or may not be necessary but I think it's better to be safe than have to replay 21 missions over and over again.

*You will get a new horse during a mission with Bonnie. During the mission you will break a stallion (the Kentucky Saddlebred) and Bonnie will tell you to keep it. You can continue on using the Kentucky Saddlebred as this will not reset your counter.

*On the Seth mission when he tells you to steal a horse, instead mount your own horse and point your weapon at the law officers or lasso one of their horses. When you get your bounty, ride away and they will follow. ***This may not be necessary but it's an option if you don't want to chance it.

*If your horse dies, reload your most recent game-save. Save often!!!

*Do not use any horse deeds

Additional Tips
If this is your first play-through and you will be doing side missions and such, make sure you use your campsite to save often. Challenges do not auto-save until completed, so save after any progress you make with challenges.

If you are starting a new game just to get this achievement and want to get through as quickly as possible, use your campsite to fast travel to mission start locations and skip cut scenes. It will still probably take a 2 1/2 - 3 hours.

There are three save slots to choose from when you start a new game. Be careful not to save over a game you want to keep.

Good Luck!

Below are comments that I thought were relevant in specific situations.

** just a little addition that may not have been made entirely clear, I started the game with the war horse, when you get the stallion for the bonnie mission, do not use the deed to get your war horse back, otherwise the counter resets, I ended up getting the achievement with the war horse on mission 27
Posted by minus15T on 13 May 11 13:18:21

** I didnt see it mentioned in other comments, but if you allow your honor to drop to Desperado, when you whistle, a Dark Horse will respond. If you save with that horse, your counter will reset as well. I highly recommend that anyone attempting this achievement keep using the Kentucky Saddler for the duration as it is very easily recognizable and during many of the Act 1 missions it is unlikely that you'll come across any civilian riding one or randomly hitched to confuse you. +1 for the thorough guide (except for the dark horse mention!)

I believe you but since we have no counter to tell us where this is resetting I would rather be safe. It's no trouble to just whistle your horse.

Counter, did you ever actually hitch your horse yourself?

Man I hate this stupid achievement. One thing was my Kentucky Saddler died, and I didn't have a save ready to go or I actually saved over it or something. Then I buy the Kentucky Saddler deed to get my horse back...I then had been doing all missions in a row, but the stupid Seth mission restarted the counter again I guess. I just finished up the Fort Mercer Assault, so hopefully I will get this sometime in Act 2. It is still a stupid achievement though.

It is one of the most annoying achievements I have seen in a game. The fact that they made it secret almost guarantees that many people will miss it on their first play-through. They didn't put a counter that we can see so it's all trial and error. Seems like a last minute, not well though out addition to an otherwise fun achievement list.

@xShtanky If it unlocked for you sometime in Mexico you were well past mission 21 so there is still a chance that it did affect it.

@onnovdw I don't know if you can do it that way. I doubt it. But if you try it and it works definitely let me know. I started a new game and played through the first 21 missions to unlock.

I'd just like to clarify that missions replayed from the "Stats > Missions" menu ***DO NOT*** count toward this achievement. I spent the last two hours doing it that way to no avail. You must advance through the story in order to unlock this achievement.

@jonswan12 As I said in my solution. You can take the stallion and it will not reset the counter. To be safe though I would recommend not to ever hitch it at a hitching post.

I still have not got this achievement and now I am in Mexico. Do I need to restart again? I also have 46 out 48 achievements, so this achievement is really killing me. Even at work I think why is this achievement so hard to obtain?

By JJFinch1987 on 21 Jun 2010 13:02
Bastards.

I worked through up to "Wild Horses, Tamed Passions" last night and at the end of the mission I got off the Stallion and whistled, thinking it only saved as my new horse if I hitched it, the blue horse icon flashed over the Stallion and disappeared. I turned the game off and deleted the save file in disgust.

Then today I check the solution here and see that I could of carried on regardless and now I'm just disgusted with myself. I have to do at least the first 8 or 9 missions again (the fourth time).

You'll get your thumbs up when I get my achievement!

@Dave You are probably right. If your horse dies and you don't care whether you have that same horse you can probably continue on with whatever horse you get when you whistle. Just don't hitch the horse. Same with using the deeds. I haven't verified this but it makes sense. I made the solution mainly for those who are having to replay to get the achievement, as I did, so I made it as fool-proof as I could to avoid having to try multiple times.

By Uplink oo Seven on 25 Aug 2010 22:23
@Uplink oo Seven - Aside from the guidelines in my solution? Nope. My solution is probably overkill as it is. Are you hitching your horse? If yes, don't. If you play through without hitching a horse (besides the few times the game forces you) then it should unlock after mission 21. Remember, they have to be story missions, not stranger missions. If you want to be absolutely sure to unlock it, start again and follow all the guidelines.

On two separate occasions my horse has been changed at the end or the beginning of a mission. I spent the money on the war horse so I don't like being reduced to using the regular slower steeds. Anyone know why it keeps getting reset? I'm already halfway through the game and still no achievement.

By SpazCool on 19 Oct 2011 14:00
@SpazCool Did your horse ever die? That can cause a random horse to appear. I have heard that this achievement can be done with the War Horse but players have reported that it popped later that mission 21. All I can suggest is finish your play-through and if it doesn't pop and you still want the achievement - replay without the War Horse using my recommendations. Good Luck.

So I realized now that I had killed my horse in the third mission where you race Bonnie. I accidentally ran off a cliff and did the quick load back to finish the race. Any idea if that resets the counter? I am now at 18 missions completed, but should I still get this achievement if I play a few more missions? I haven't let the horse die yet and I haven't switched yet.

It's been a while. i can only guess that if that mission is before you get the Kentucky Saddlebred it may not reset. If it was the Kentucky Saddlebred that died it might reset. There really is no way to know for sure though. Since you are so far along all you can do is keep playing and follow the guidelines. Good luck :)

By THRACE 462753 on 03 Jan 2012 23:18
Well I got it at mission 21 just like everyone else said. Funny thing was though, I ended up "losing" my horse at the end of the first mission with Irish where you are supposed to get the gatling gun. I had to restart from the last save and when I finished it again "pop" there it went.

So it looks like you can lose the horse in that early race mission and it won't count as a death if you do the quick start.

Two questions:

1)If your horse changes colors, does that mean the counter resets? I just finished the attack on Fort Mercer, walked around and went inside, came out, whistled for horse and it looks like a different one showed up. Going to try a reload, but I am curious.

2) Can you see the "missions with same horse counter"? I looked, but I don't see it, so I think not.

Thanks

By Onza on 29 Jun 2012 19:23
@Onza It is likely that if you got a different horse then your original horse died and the counter was reset. It is hard to say for sure since there is no counter in the stats to show "missions with the same horse".

Anthony Ajax- it didn't become the default for me either, take a look at ARISDRAGON's comment a few above (it didn't for him either, or for me) I'm not very far along so hopefully it pops when it should.

Could not get this damn thing to pop. Was on mission 27 and nothing, so I decided to hitch my horse for the very first time and see if it would pop at mission 38. Went and did mission 28, bam, it pops.....?

Hey THRACE, I got a possible update for you, but I'd need someone to verify, as I am not 100% sure myself.

But I just got it one Mission 39. However, I know I used the War Horse deed at least once, if not twice.
So, I think ( again, don't take my word until somebody verifies ) that you can use the War Horse Deed ( if that is the one that Bonnie gives you in the beginning ) and it not affect your counter.

This is such an awful achievement. The requirements are different than what the description says. I didn't ever use a hitching post but my horse died and I also used a horse deed at some point. I'm right before the last mission and have no idea if I'll get this achievement.

Please include in your guide what buttons to press to whistle. I just started playing the game and I see no option to whistle.

I was going after this achievement after finding out about way later, and the whole time I was worried if I had to complete 20 missions in one sitting or saving and quitting was allowed. You should explicitly mention this in the guide.

Still, +1 from me!

So if a horse dies during a mission will reloading a checkpoint work? I noticed it still counts the death in stats, so I reloaded. My horse kept riding off the cliff next to the bridge in the Bonnie race like it had a death wish.

When I went through again without hitching or unhitching it unlocked after mission 21. While I can't be absolutely certain that hitching or unhitching your own horse affects the counter I can say that I did both on my first try and the achievement did not unlock. When hitching my horse in Armadillo it glitched and my horse disappeared and a wagon appeared. Maybe this is what did it. Who knows. Best to steer away from the hitching posts imo.

I am stuck at the wild horses, taimed passions (or something like that) mission. It's the one where you have to break the 2 horses with bonnie and her dad and then the stallion. After I break the stallion is says to take it to Bonnie. If I do that then I lose my previous horse. I tried getting off the stallion after breaking it and then getting on my horse and then lassoing the stallion. After doing that a guy comes up on his horse and says "Don't worry I'll take it from here Mr. Farston" and then just sits there. I wait... nothing. I even tried dragging the lassoed stallion over to Bonnie and nothing happens, it just keeps saying to mount the Stallion. Anybody else run into this?

PS. Also agree this is the MOST annoying achievement in the otherwise pretty solid (but glitchy) game

I got this achievement a while back now after about 3 attempts. Whats strange is that I have a couple of friends who got the achievement on their first playthrough, the strange part is that they don't care about achievements they will have just been playing through the missions without being distracted by side missions. It appears we're making it more difficult than it is!

You get your feedback now Thrace.

From what i understand about this achievement from reading the achievement descrption, it seems to me that this achievement is alot simpler then people are making out.

For instance, the official description of this achievement is "Complete 20 story missions without switching to a new horse at a hitching post."

(The key word being AT)

Now to me this means, it doesn't matter if you are forced to get a new mount by the game.. just don't hitch it anywhere manually. If you start a mission and your horse is already at a hitching post this to shouldn't matter as the game has placed it there and should therfore not reset the counter.

In short:
** DON'T hitch your horse manually unless instructed to do so by the game.
** Whenever you need a horse always whistle for yours, even if your horse is hitched at a post by the game, whistle for it ust to be safe.

just a little addition that may not have been made entirely clear, I started the game with the war horse, when you get the stallion for the bonnie mission, do not use the deed to get your war horse back, otherwise the counter resets, I ended up getting the achievement with the war horse on mission 27

I didnt see it mentioned in other comments, but if you allow your honor to drop to Desperado, when you whistle, a Dark Horse will respond.

Someone may have said this explicitly elsewhere but I didn't see it... It's worth noting that if you screw this up in the beginning of the game you can pick 20 consecutive missions at any point throughout the storyline. I think my horse got killed offscreen a few times early in the game before I realized what was happening, but then I stuck with one horse for a while in the middle of the story. Just popped this on a MacDougal mission near the end of the game, so pick this one up whenever as long as you've finished less than 38 missions (I'm assuming... since there are 57 missions) so that you don't have to replay the first 4 hours.

Followed this guide, popped first mission on Irish after completion, "A Frenchman, a Welshman and an Irishman" (the only quest marker left, since I finished all others.)

**Side notes** (For those as scared as I was. I was on my 5th play-through)

*My horse died once on "Obstacles in Our Path" (I dash boarded and let the game pick my save.)
*Anytime I failed a mission, I dash boarded (even if my horse didn't die).
*I failed the race on "The Sport of Kings, and Liars" and clicked "retry."

Thank you Thrace!

Just got this last night. I followed the walkthrough and it popped right after "A Frenchman, a Welshman and an Irishman." My horse never got into any danger of being killed, but I saved after every mission just in case I needed to reload. I used the horse that I got after completing "Wild Horses, Tamed Passions."

I have to say, this achievement is more forgiving than most here imply. I rode several horses before I got the Stallion from Bonnie and stuck with it. It got killed several times (sometimes by me shooting it by accident), and I had to reload. I also rode several horses by mistake due to them walking in my path as I was trying to loot a corpse by hitting Y. Again, I had to reload a my save everytime and I was ok. After crossing into Mexico you automatically are forced to ride the horse waiting on the bank. I dismounted and called my stallion and apparently that didn't break the streak. I am not saying that you're safe riding other horses, but apparently if you avoid hitching altogether, you should be good. I got the achievement afterI freed the prisoners from the prison wagon.

First, thanks THRACE for a perfect guide on this achievement! You could have not been more clear than your original post a few years ago!

Let me just add this though about using War Horse.....
I got this last night. I had finished the game and had to play through again to get it. I used War Horse through the entire process. In the Bonnie missions that REQUIRE you to ride or hitch horses, it WILL NOT effect the counter. This includes breaking the Kentucky Saddler and riding the horse out of the burning barn.
As soon as the mission ended that you have to break the Kentucky Saddler, I got off the horse and used the campsite to save and when I continued on, I had my War Horse back not the Kentucky Saddler.
Also, for those worried about the Seth mission that requires you to steal a horse, DON'T! Stay on your horse and just point your gun at one of the two lawmen and you will get a $5 bounty and they will chase you. Just out run them until the bounty is gone and return to Seth when directed.
I got the achievement right after the 1st Irish mission was completed. Bottom line is this....
1) DO NOT hitch or ride another horse unless the mission requires you to do so!
2) Whatever you do, do not let your horse die, if you do, the counter resets
3) Do not use a deed to get ANY horse, just use the one you start with (if you start with War) or continue to use the Kentucky Saddler when you get it from Bonnie.
4) ALWAYS whistle for your horse
5) Most importantly, HAVE FUN!

I know this game has been out so long there's a plethora of guides for this achievement but for anyone who reads this comment, Id like to reaffirm/correct some things. For one, hitching your horse is absolutely fine (your horse being the only horse you hitch of course). I feel like this guide is neurotic in many senses and causes undue stress because of that neurosis. So hitch away as long as youre sure its your horse. I used the War Horse so I had no trouble with accidentally using another horse b/c of how distinctive it is. Secondly, using a deed at any time, even if its the same breed of horse, resets the counter. This happened to me during my sixth mission where you get the Kentucky Saddler and so I didnt get achievement until mission 27 in Mexico (I just really like that damn black horse). Luckily, thats the only instance where the game fucks you by making your default horse a different one than you had. In most cases the Kentucky Saddler is a superior horse, but for those of us with the War Horse its actually a downgrade. Lastly, always check that the horse you are on is your trusty steed by looking at the stamina bar. It should be fully filled if this is the horse you use. The game dupicated my War Horse once after a bounty mission and I caught this glitch just in time because I noticed the horse's stamin wasn't maxed for loyalty. Good luck and sorry for the lack of paragraphs

The new easiest way is to just tie your first horse to a hitching post and then don't ever tie another one to a hitching post for the remainder of the game. This way it doesn't matter if your horse dies or if you use any horse deeds because as long as you never tie another horse to a hitching post it only registers that first and therefore, 20 missions later you get the achievement. Taking a horse from the hitching post because of a mission doesn't count as you having tied it up so don't worry when they put your horse on a post for you. It only counts if you actively tie it the hitching post yourself.

Using this solution and THRACE 462753's guidelines above, you should have no problems with this one.

Great guide. Worked like a charm. Just wanted to say the game may force you to hitch your horse two times. After that just don't hitch again 'til the achievement pops up. When the game automatically hitched my horse when ever I saved or did a mission I always whistled for it. I never got my horse while it was hitched. Needless to say I never let my horse die and I got this achievement once I completed "A Gentle Drive with Friends."

When do you recommend doing that first hitch? I would assume after you can whistle, but when is this? I'm starting a new game, just to get this one achievement. Really don't want to mess it up. Thanks.

Why does it say it doesn't matter if your horse dies. Then tells you to keep the horse alive?

it does matter if your horse dies. My horse was killed in the pikes basin mission and I'm now at 24 missions and no achievement. I've only hitched the horse when I was forced and only have wistled for the horse to call it.

great guide except for one part -

i agree with other guides - if your horse dies, go back and load a game save. i hitched my original horse once at the beginning, careful not to ride or hitch any other horse. my horse died and then auto save restarted the mission with what appeared to be my original horse. when 20 missions had passed and achv. didn't pop up, i can only assume that the counter was reset after the horse died. game glitch, maybe? what worked for me for the remainder of the single player campaign was to game save before each mission and if i lost my horse i would load the game save to maintain the stats counter.

BTW, the guide you referenced: (http://reddead.wikia.com/wiki/Spurred_To_Victory) also says "keep the same horse alive for 20 missions."

I was obsessing over this achievement, convinced that I had blown it several times, but I ended up getting it after the minimum 21 missions. I got it despite the following: 1) Being forced to change to a new horse (the stallion) after lassoing it. 2) Riding a different horse out of the burning barn at the MacFarlane Ranch. 3) Jumping on the sheriff's horse--attached to a hitching post, no less--as a diversion during the first Seth mission. Apparently, nothing that happens during a mission has any impact on the achievement. I also did a horsebreaking job at Ridgewood Farm in between missions, and it had no impact.

Echoing the advice of others, until you get the achievement: 1) Always dismount and never hitch your horse to a hitching post. However, after you save your game at a safehouse, your horse will rematerialize at a hitching post. 2) ALWAYS WHISTLE for your horse, even if the horse is at a hitching post, to avoid accidently getting on the wrong horse. The horse will come when you whistle, even if at a hitching post. 3) Save often. If your horse dies, which can happen, just reload a prior save.

Yeah...after hearing from more players it seems my solution is verging on paranoid lol. But after trying 3 times to get the achievement, that's how I felt. It probably comes down to simply - Never hitch any horse to a hitching post.

i got this after doing 21 missions. cant be stated enough but DO NOT hitch any horse you get. I whistled for my horse every time i could and never had a horse get killed.

FOR the Bonnie mission where you obtain the new horse, simply get it and never hitch.

if it helps from being tempted to do so get off horse away from the action and run up to objectives to avoid risk of it being killed or hitched, etc. i did random selection of missions no particular order unlocked after mission num 21 finished where i escorted Seth's wagon to tumbleweed to find map piece

This solution contains spoilers.

It took me exactly 21 missions to get this achievement and it was all at the beginning.

I did all the Bonnie missions. I always whistled for my horse. I even walked away a bit when it was right in front of me and then whistled for it. I kept the original horse I got at the beginning and after breaking in the Kentucky horse I just hopped off and whistled for my original horse.

I also did all the Marshal missions including 'Hanging Bonnie MacFarlane'. I also did Seth missions up until he got his glass eye. I did all the Wells missions but I stopped before doing the 'The Sport of Kings and Liars'. I did a few Irish ones (up until you rescue Shaky the stutterer).

My horse didn't die once. I did plenty of reloads and retry checkpoints on missions. I was always being good and had my goodness maxed out by the time I got this achievement.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

You will start the game with a default horse; you can either change your horse or stick to the one you are given. Just progress through the story without swamping your horse for 20 story missions.

I suggest you do this from the start of the game and progress through all the story missions until the achievement unlocks. You can hitch your horse, though if you mount another horse by mistake and hitch that one you will loose your progress.

You don't need to hitch your horse in this game so there is no real need. You can call your horse at any time by pressing and the horse you have always used will come running. If your horse dies your counter for this achievement will reset.

Act 1:

  • Bonnie Macfarlane (8)
  • Marshal Johnson (5)
  • Nigel Dickens (5)
  • Seth (3)
  • Irish (4)

Act 2:

  • Landon Ricketts (4)
  • Vincente Desanta (5)
  • Luisa Fortuna (4)
  • Abraham Reyes (3)

Act 3:

  • Agent Edgar Ross (4)
  • Prof. Macdougal (3)

Home Missions:

  • Jack (4)
  • Abigail (2)
  • Uncle (2)
  • Fianle (1)

Note: This achievement has a mind of it's own so it may unlock sooner or later for some people.

THIS TROPHY IS MISSABLE!
To avoid missing this trophy, do NOT hitch any other horse except your current one. It's okay to break and ride other horses as long as you don't hitch another one or use a deed for a new horse. If your horse happens to die then pause and go to the main menu, then load last save. When you finish 20 story missions with the same horse and the trophy unlocks, you can hitch other horses and let them die if they happen to.

The only time your 20 story missions stack using a different horse is after earning the Kentucky Saddler. Meaning that after earning the Kentucky Saddler, your 20 story missions won't reset as long as you don't hitch your horse. You have a ton of story missions to attempt this as there are 57 total missions. However it would be wise to earn this early on to ensure you'll always have enough attempts to earn this trophy.

If you don't hitch a horse early on, this should unlock after you complete the "Let the Dead Bury Their Dead" mission and before you reach Mexico.

If you do hitch your horse by accident early on do not worry, just make sure not to hitch a horse after you complete "Father Abraham" as there won't be enough missions to attempt this anymore.
