How to unlock the The mother lode achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

This achievement is about as difficult as Normal Difficulty. The only drastic difference between both modes is the lack of Casual/Normal Aim. You are also able to now use your already unlocked arsenal from Free Roam (anyone who has moved into Legend (like myself) will be better off taking one of the preset classes) which should balance the "supposed" increased health of enemies.

Each map has its own method of mayhem, and likely a most efficient means of completion. Because of this I will list what helped me complete these missions in both Normal, and Advanced modes. Hopefully if you're having troubles completing a mission, my methods could assist at completion. I will also be listing my methods with three other players, having teammates will make for a quick completion of these missions (as long as they are able to aim).

There is a specific order that the maps cycle through, this guide doesn't follow that cycle. The six maps are Escape, Walton's Gold, Kidnapped Girl, Herd, River, and Ammunition.

I'm unsure of what denotes a Gold Medal vs. a Silver/Bronze. But after every mission completion my team and I always received a Gold. Our times for Normal Mode ranged between 5 and 10 minutes for the missions, whereas in Advanced our times ranged from 7 minutes to 22 minutes. The medal system could be based on points and/or completion time, but regardless of your completion time, unless you're getting no Kill Multipliers, your scores should always remain above 5,000 total.

*Update* (Thanks to Nerevarine)
Apparently score and kill multipliers are your goal for Gold, as evidenced by two times/scores in "The River" runs by Nerevarine. As he has said, aim for the head and kill quickly.

Escape (Carriage/Tumbleweed)
Completion Time - 22 Minutes
Total Score - 9,870

Recommended class setup; 2 Soldiers, 2 Snipers. (1 Miner optional)

For the first portion of the mission, clear the enemies until you reach the carriages, have one person drive the Gold Carriage, and two man the carriage with the chain-gun; the remaining teammate can choose to either ride shotgun on either carriage, or ride separately.

The next portion involves riding the carriages to the U.S. Army. As soon as the radar shows red dots, stop the carriages. Everyone pick off the riders before they come close, otherwise a close-quarters shootout will likely have a teammate or two dying. Once you're past the two groups, drop off the carriages and then move on towards Tumbleweed.

When your group arrives, move up towards the left cliff and clear the snipers on the opposing side. Once you've the outer rim of Tumbleweed cleared, clear the town with the cannons. Kill the remaining scattered gang members and then ride back, once you've cleared the town.

A shootout will ensue, good luck and aim straight. Immediately after the shootout, run to Benedict Point and clear the remaining marshalls. At least one teammate ride the stage coach, while the others either ride separately, or shotgun/passenger (whatever they're comfortable with shooting from). This portion will use the same strategy as earlier in the level, once enemies appear on the radar, slow down and pick them off.

Once you've gotten closer to the bridge; if necessary, dismount your horses and slowly clear the passage to; and across the bridge, to Completion.

Walton's Gold (Mine/Holdout)
Completion Time - 7 Minutes
Total Score - 9,950

Recommended class setup; 2 Soldiers, 2 Snipers. (1 Miner optional)

This mission begins difficult. Have the two Soldiers push into the camp, while the Snipers slowly pick off snipers on the cliffs. Watch for miners throwing dynamite, and a chain-gunner near the entrance to the cave. After you've cleared the outside, move into the mine and begin making your way towards the mine cart.

A well-thrown stick of dynamite into the center of the mine will clear the majority of the miners, the remainder are in the outside path. Split the team; one clearing the outside path, the other the center and the back of the mine. A short game of Bag Grab will start, and end quickly if the entire team takes two bags, twice, to the mine cart.

Once outside, your team will have to holdout in the house next to the mine. Quickly clear the left and right sides of the house, then work your way killing the remaining miners. At two points respawns will occur. The first will be a group that runs behind the house and down next to the chain-gun, the next will run to reinforce the fallen gang members in front of the house.

If you take your time the Completion screen will show when the last enemy dies.

Kidnapped Girl (Fort Mercer/Carriage Escape)
Completion Time - 13 Minutes
Total Score - 7,600

Recommended class setup; 2 or 3 Soldiers, 2 or 1 Snipers. (1 Miner optional)

The beginning of the mission places your team in front of a chain-gunner, and Fort Mercer. Kill the gang-members in front of the gate first while the Sniper(s) pick off the enemies on the walls of the fort. Once clear, use the explosives on the door and proceed inside.

First, clear the courtyard, then split the team. Having two members head to the second floor and clear the second story of the house near the back of the fort will hasten this portion. Once the far courtyard and the corresponding house have been cleared, escort the girl to the Carriage.

As with the mission Escape, stop the carriage and pick off enemies before they reach the carriage. This carriage ride is near the difficulty of the second/last carriage ride in Escape, but can be taken a little quicker. When you are nearing the destination farm (forgot the name), slowly clear the stockades, and the cliffs with rifles, then move the carriage to its resting place.

The last portion of the mission is simple, and has you defend the girl from six to eight riders. Quickly dispatch the riders, and you'll have completed the mission.

The Herd (Pike's Basin/Cow Herding)
Completion Time - 9 Minutes
Total Score - 8,900

Recommended class setup; 3-4 Soldiers, 1-0 Snipers. (1 Miner Optional)

Use Repeaters/Sniper Rifles to clear the enemies around the cow corral. Once the gang-members, and the two spawns from the left and right hills are dead, proceed down the hill and mount your horses. Herd the 20 cattle down Pike's Basin, watching the cliff ledges as you go for enemy-spawns. After about 2 minutes, and 10-15 spawned gang-members, you should be leaving the basin.

As with the two carriage missions, this portion will have horseback enemies attempting to kill you, and the cows. Quickly dispatch them before they have the chance to shoot at the herd. Follow the marked radar until you've herded the cattle to Armadillo.

The River (Boat/Ensalida(sp?))
Completion Time - 11 Minutes
Total Score - 6,700

Recommended class setup; 2 Soldiers, 2 Snipers. (1 Miner optional)

This mission is incredibly straight forward, and simple. The first stop will have you dock, then clear your way towards a rock formation. Take your time and clear the frequently spawning enemies. Once you've arrived at the rock, jog back to the boat and start down-river. At several points while on the river; throughout the mission, enemies will spawn on the ledges near the shore, or on boats that float near your own. Dispatch the land-locked gang-members first, and/or quickly kill all of the enemies on any boat by shooting the intelligently placed explosive crate at their feet.

The next stop, will dock you next to the house you started near in Escape. A quick toss of some dynamite will easily kill anyone inside the hut. Kill the remaining enemies, then proceed back to the boat. One last stop.

When the boat docks, toss dynamite at the nearest house. Another stick tossed to the house at the center of town should also kill its inhabitants. Slowly and carefully clear the town working your way around the town in a clockwise direction, after taking a left off of the boat. Several mounted Mexican soldiers will spawn, I believe they throw dynamite/fire bombs; kill these on sight.

When the last soldier has fallen, the completion screen should appear.

Ammunition (Tesoro Azul (sp?))
Completion Time - 8 Minutes
Total Score - 8,400

Recommended class setup; 3-4 Soldiers, 1-0 Snipers. (1 Miner optional)

The last mission, and my favorite.

When the mission starts, follow the tool-tip advice of moving East. Immediately soldiers will blow the doors, and run in, two players should face each door and kill those spawns. Once these initial enemies are downed, work your way out the Eastern exit of the town, clearing the soldiers quickly (going too slow will start the cannon fire from the encampment on the hill (you don't want that)).

Work your way up the Southern hill, toward the chain-guns and mounted cannons. Quickly pick off the gunners and riflemen as you work up the hill. Once close to the encampment, a couple sticks of dynamite can easily clear the entire camp. After you've mopped up on the hill, use the cannons to kill off the remaining soldiers which should now be running towards you.

When the last soldier has fallen, you should be given your final Gold Medal, and hopefully the last achievement for this mission pack.

Hopefully you've found my tips/walk-through interesting and helpful.

River is the hardest one for sure. I have now tried it quite a few times and my best result is 14:30 and 9800$, which was enough for Silver.

well one thing to add is that the kidnapped girls ending is by no means easy. Every time we get to the end the girl gets killed or we die because there are not 6 to 8 guys more like 15. And some on horse.

How many people can you have during these missions? Seeing as how the other achievement is called "Have posse, will travel" does that mean you can have a posse of 8 to do these missions? If so then that will make this real easy.

Escape - 13:22, $8330, Silver
Escape - 13:41, $10375, Gold
Walton's Gold - 10:00, $8260, Gold
Kidnapped Girl - 8:51, $5680, Silver
Kidnapped Girl - 11:30, $11235, Gold
Herd - 8:20, $6760, Gold
River - 16:60, $6850, No award
River - 16:50, $11945, Gold
Ammunition - 8:30, $4385, No award
Ammunition - 7:28, $9070, Gold

It was all about allowing as many enemies spawn as possible and killing them all with headshots and kill-streaks. Time seems to have no effect, as evidenced by the River runs.

for the kidnapped girl mission.. we stopped the carriage on the hill before we entered the final town and sniped everyone.. then we only had to deal with a handful of riders that spawned.. a tip for the herd is to have 2 or 3 guys advance ahead of the herd and take the ramp on the left up so you're level with all the bad guys in the canyon.. this way you're guaranteed to have 20/20 cattle survive the canyon part

I am pretty sure that about 10,000 points, cash, score or whatever have you is required for a gold on The River.

Headshots get you bonus points, but so does distance kills, knife kills, shooting off hats, and maybe a few more things. Meanwhile dynamite kills are not so hot and tend to give you less points, but can help increase your streak in some situations.

A normal kill is 30 points, but a throwing knife kill will get you 55. If you can string knife kills into your streaks you'll be able to make big points on multipliers.

Cha0sTh30ry X might be right about The River. I did three runs last night, scores of 9,500 and 9,900 were silver medal. Third run was 10,500 and was a gold medal.

I'm glad they put in an achievement that makes people aim for themselves. There is nothing worse than being casually gunned down by the same person over and over again in Free Roam. Learn to play the game for yourself instead of letting the game do all the work and then we'll talk.

Auto aim and lock on are for girls.

ok someone told me for river in order to get gold, you have to kill all the enemies, but the score and timing doesnt matter. is this true?

Just did this in a boosting session, and I can tell everyone in truth shooting all the players on THE RIVER doesn't matter. We missed maybe 5 or 6 and still got it. Had 11,000+pts and took about 19 minutes.

As everyone is saying the River is the hardest to get gold on and it took me several attempts to get over 10k to get gold. The biggest money maker is HEAD SHOTS. I cannot stress this enough as you get about 30 for a regular kill, but 220 for a head shot!!

Also forget about the dynamite, just decreases your chances of getting head shots. Take your time and try and line em up, its worth it.

If you're having difficulty getting gold on any mission, go VERY slow and aim for head shots. A carcano rifle is very useful. On the escape our team had 9000 points after tumbleweed (almost gold at halfway) kill chains aren't as much points as single headshots. Also on the river when you land at the final dock in nosalida you will see a horseman with molotovs on the road, as long as you don't kill the enemies in the 2nd house (on the opposite side of the road to the dock) or go more than halfway across the road he will INFINITELY respawn, which can net you a lot of points easily.

An excellent guideline to this missions. Got them done with my friends tonight.

To be successful in the advanced missions in coop time is NOT of the essence. It is all about score so take your time, pick your shots carefully and cover each others back.

Good luck

This angers me. I had my 5th legend badge, and all but The Herd and Ammunition gold in advanced. Then, just my luck, my file got corrupted, and I had to start over. Now I'm having trouble beating the casual/normal coop missions, because my teammates are retarded. They kill the horse carrage, they kill each other, they kill the hostage. I don't want to make a session for the regular coops. It is just frustrating. I needed to vent.

Extra tip for "The River": score is what matters, 10k of score is what you need to do to get the gold medal. So use precision rifle and kill by headshot many enemies you can. The last part in Nosalida is the best spot to farm kills by headshot.

FYI for anyone having issues with "The Herd" and the part with all of the horseback riders. Just shoot the horses heads/legs. It makes this easy. The second a guy falls off his horse/after the horse dies, they just run off into the distance and you can pick them off much easier. Some I just let go when overwhelmed. Makes this much more do-able solo.

Whoops deleted my last comment... err... I flaked on getting all the info every time, but here's my current standings:

Escape - ?, 3400, no award
Walton's Gold - 10:00, 8260, Gold
Kidnapped Girl - ?, ~6500, Silver
Herd - 8:20, 6760, Gold
River - 16:60, 6850, No award
Ammunition - 8:30, 4385, No award

I spent a good time at the end of Herd just killing guys to get the score up and it seemed to work. It would seem that time or number of cattle or anything like that is irrelevant.

My highest kill streak in that time was 13, net 2300 points, so I think the best way to go about these missions is to trade off kill streaks with your teammates for maximum score.

i was in the session with Curtieson. definetively the money is all it's about.
btw @Cormac I consider myself a good player and good FPS gamer... but being on a moving boat/horse and shooting a moving/covered target in RDR just sucks monkey balls. if at least the max. sensitivity was higher like in MW2. That is why there is auto-aiming in the game: because it's very hard to hit without dead-eye when you AND your target are moving and the AI is shooting at you without missing a shot.
in PvP however they should remove auto-target all together, I'll agree on that.

@MrBigShade (and to anyone having a hard time unlocking this achv):
there was a patch released with the Liars & Cheats DLC that fixed the glitch of ppl getting Mother Lode and not You Rule! at the same time, but i believe that patch then glitched Mother Lode. I had 2x over attained gold medals in all advanced coop missions and the Mother Lode achv would just not unlock. assuming the patch...err...i mean, the Hunting and Trading Outfits Pack ;) that releases today (10/12/10) doesn't fix up the glitches itself, and you're 100% positive you've gold medaled all advanced coop missions, the way to fix the glitch is to CLEAR YOUR SYSTEM CACHE and then, sadly yes, reattempt the achievement. this should work for all achievements being reported as glitched: map glitch, Buckin' Awesome, Mother Lode, You Rule! etc.

you can see a detailed micosoft guide to deleting your system cache here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971755

PM if you have any questions or need help.

I just want to add: this achievement CAN be done in a private lobby. Does not have to be public.

I mention this because my group wasted several hours in public lobbies failing to even get the missions to load during one of the points where Rockstar's servers were glitched to the point of near unplayability. (Public lobbies were glitched, private was clean.) Hopefully Rockstar got their act together by the time you read this, but I wouldn't count on it.

for those of you who are, just like i once was, still stuck on the river (i reccomend playing with four people, if you dont have that many friends, use the gaming session thingy on this site)
1 the time doesn't matter, but only makes a difference between a 100, 250 and 500 point bonus
2 but the full 10.000 points overall are still needed
3 by far one of the best tricks for this mission is to know this little secret: when you are on the raft the enemies are all one-shot-one-kill's, but you do NOT gain points by killing them, unless getting multipliers and/or headshots. so let the two best shooters (or the ones with the most deadeye left) gain some kill chains for a lot of points. if one dies, the other one should take his place
4 another tip for this is to go for headshots, as you gain about 50 point for a regular kill while you get 250 points for a lil' shot in the head
5 the final but most important tip i can give: use deadeye :D

I played with 3 random strangers online, and we golded the river. I am a terrible shot. The other three were better. They did most of the work. At the last stop where you must blow up crates, they all died leaving me alone. It took me a good 10 minutes and some really close calls, but I killed the remaining 20 or so people. When it said total time was 24 minutes I thought for sure it wouldn't be gold, but I got it.

The fist five missions on advanced (minus river) were pretty straight forward just push through and try to keep death and time low and then try to score as many points by killing everyone as you can, you can let a couple deaths happen and maybe take a little longer but if you kill everyone then you will end up getting the points and the gold. Now the only challenge is that for some reason River has to be treated differently. You MUST score as many headshots as you can to get enough points. i have a lot of expirience in this map now so I know the system. When getting of the raft the first time just go around and pop everyone in the head like a champ that you are and dont worry about much of anything else deaths and time on this one do not matter at all on what your rating will be and I mean at all, we probably had 5 deaths and a half hour but we got gold because of all the headshots. Another thing to note is when traveling on the raft kill off all the guys on the enemy rafts by shooting the tnt boxes not by killing them. have two people of your group shoot the people who run allong the river banks because the only way to really get points off of these guys is through kill chains. baisically the whole point in this is down worry about glitches deaths or time, head shot and kill chain and you will get an easy gold.

To unlock the advanced co-op game mode, you will need to complete all the general Co-Op missions. Once you have completed all six you will unlock the Advanced Missions.

If you don't have any experience with the advanced modes in Red Dead Redemption, you will need to play through each mission several times until you succeed. You won't be assisted with auto aim, and the enemies will down your player much faster.

Much like the previous Co-Op missions, time and your overall score count towards each medal.

The Escape
Objectives:

  • Steal the Gold
  • Clear Tumbleweed
  • Face and Escape the Army

The Kidnapped Girl Objectives:

  • Clear the Hideout
  • Take the girl to the house
  • Protect the girl

The Herd Objectives:

  • Save the Herd
  • Pass through the canyon
  • Get at least 5 cows to the ranch

The River Objectives:

  • Clear the first landing
  • Clear the banks and other rafts

As the description says, you need to get a Gold medal on all of the Advanced Co-Op missions. Although this may sound difficult, all of the missions are feasible if you take your time and have good co-operation with your team-mate(s). Fortunately, mission time does not affect your overall score but kills chains do.

I recommend only 2 people killing (the others reviving and providing recon if needed) for a maximum chain score but be aware that Auto Aim is turned off thus making kill chains harder to get. You will also need to stay in cover a lot  more too. I also recommend throwing either Fire Bottles or Dynamite to get a kill chain going, then mopping up the remaining enemies that are injured or have scattered. The overall scores needed to get a Gold medal on Advanced has also increased but with decent chain kills, you should be able to reach that and higher. Also, please note that the more people you play with, the higher the overall score to get a Gold medal will be.

I recommend the Gunslinger, Miner and Marksman loadout classes when doing these missions, especially on Advanced. The Marksman class will be very useful for sniping and thinning out enemies from distances, the Miner for the Fire Bottles/Dynamite to clear out clumps of enemies together and the Gunslinger class for its medium range rifle and revolver which is very high powered at closed range, as well as having a high fire rate. Also, you can use your online load out (No Holds Barred), though I would only recommend using this if you've reached level 50 online and haven't Passed into Legend (Prestiged) yet.

Always use cover, hug walls, be careful and watchful of enemies trying to flank you or lobbing Dynamite in your direction to flush you out. Whilst doing this stay close to your team-mates so you can revive them if necessary but as mentioned before, some enemies will lob Dynamite or other explosive items at you so don't stick too close together to avoid being wiped out with one explosion. Upon completing the last mission on Advanced and getting a Gold Medal for all 6 of them, the trophy will be yours. You will also unlock You Rule! at the same time.
