Kill 500 enemies with any pistol or revolver in any game mode.

How to unlock the In a Hail of Bullets achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

This works with all handguns ingame. That includes

LeMat
Schoefield
Cattleman
High power
Mauser
Semi-auto (pistol, not shotgun [obviously])
Double Action
Volcanic

You should get this through regular single player-ing, but a good way to quickly acquire kills is to run into hideouts (or even friendly towns, that way you can go for "Friends in High Places".) and only use pistols or revolvers. It is tempting to use repeaters and rifles, but if you just hold back, you will get this.

EDIT:
SP and MP stats DO NOT combine. You must either do this in SP or MP, not both.

No need to keep the bounty target alive. If you kill him and loot his body for the evidence, his buddies will still keep spawning and chasing you as you take the evidence back to the sherriff's office (which you need to do to complete the bounty mission), no different then if you keep him alive.

Do animal kills count? Thumbs up.

No animals don't count. I got this yesterday by running around Thieve's Landing shooting people, and saving after every 20-30 kills.

Do you need to make 500 kills with just one particular pistol/revolver? Or is it all pistols and revolvers combined? I have well over 500 combined kills, should I be worried?

It's combined pistol kills - not just one single kind of pistol. If you have over 500 kills with pistols either something's wrong - or the # you're looking at is including animal kills.

Generally, I was using a rifle on missions/hideouts because it's easier this way I think. So, everytime I was horse travelling from a place to another, I equipped my bandanna and I killed every civilians I crossed in that trip with a pistol. Sometimes, you meet a lot of riders, wagons, chariots so it gives a decent amount of kills.
With the bandanna on, your honor does not drop. And if you kill every witness, you won't have a bounty on you.

Dang, wanted to pre-load this achievement. The description reads that I need 500 kills with a single pistol/revolver, not 500 kills between all of them. Oh well!

No. This is very important. Stats acquired in single player dont combine with multiplayer. Im going to add that to the solution.

Thumbs up ;-) A tip for those who want to grind this and get it out of the way as soon as possible: when you have to go bounty hunting, kill the bandits, then capture the bounty alive (do NOT kill him), and then instead of dropping him of, drive your horse with the bounty on the back, so that 2-3 bandits keep spawning as long as the bounty remains alive and is not delivered. Also a good way to loot bodies for some cash.

@Bryce MC: you would think so, but no. If you kill the bounty without capturing him, his gang gives up after three or four passes at you. The most kills I got doing that was about 35. Moving about didn't bring them back, going backward, nothing. On the other hand, if the bounty is alive they never stop spawning. If you use the West Elizabeth bounties, they spawn faster too, and it doesn't actually matter if you have left the area where you made the capture. I just racked up over a hundred kills relatively quickly by picking up a bounty for Tanner's Reach, lassoing the bounty, and taking him in the cabin with me. From the relative safety of the cabin I was free to create a lawn of gang member corpses in a fairly short time, although at times I felt I might have been better off in the open.

It is worth noting that killing the bounty after the gang members had started tracking me did not stop them spawning continuously, so if you didn't want to carry him around, you could kill him afterward. But killing him right away always resulted in just a handful of waves.

Unlike headshots you can't go to the stats menu and check on progress. What I did was add up the kills I was getting from the specific guns to total up. These stats are located along with headshots in the same tab.

3 neg votes? For giving a tip on how to find out how close you are to the achievement? Yikes.

If you have red dead undead, this achievement can be won very easily while on Death. While on Death, running into a zombie instantly kills them, each kill counts toward the weapon you currently have out. So just run through Jorge's Gap with a handgun and you'll get plenty of kills.

Nice solution....might be worth adding that Death is a horse from the Undead Nightmare DLC.

By far the fastest and easiest solution if you have Undead Nightmare. Just did it and it took like 5-10 minutes.

LOVE this solution! Turns out I didn't have many pistol kills left in Undead Nightmare compared to what I had in the core game or MP, so this helped me finished off the achievement in about 10 minutes.

I got this after losing my horse on a bounty mission, keep the bounty on your shoulder, and walk back to town, the bounty's friends will keep respawning, so you've got a plentiful supply of nice legal targets, it may also be an idea to stop just outside town, drop the bounty, and defend him until the achievement pops.

This only works when the bounty is still alive. When he's dead only two or three groups of enemies will attack you.

It does, but you can't take your dead bounty back to town IIRC, so the solution hinges on him being alive.

The way I did this was to use the bureau uniform (gained when you get 100% completion). Go to Armadillo and just start shooting civilians, they count towards the 500. With this uniform you do not attract law enforcement, and the people here rarely shoot at you.

Basically use any of these guns for the achievement, and do this in Mulitplayer or Singleplayer not both combined.

LeMat revolver
Schoefield revolver
Cattleman revolver
High power pistol
Mauserpistol
Semi-auto pistol
Double Action revolver
Volcanic pistol

Note...Easiest way in my opinion to do this is to go on the new Undead Nightmare DLC and start a horde match and pick the class with the High power pistol and basically just use that for the entire game. You will easily get this and easily in my opinion the quickest. **TIP** for any of the weapons achievement like rifles/shotguns you can do the same method :D

In single player the stats reset to the last save count when you're killled. If you get above 500 before you're killed, you of course get to keep your achievement :) But if you're on for example 300, and get 190 more on a rampage and die before you save, you're back to 300 again.

This one is really easy to get. Even if you start half way through the game, it is achieveable by the end. To get it, whenever you encounter any enemies, just use your pistol or revolver rather than any other weapon to kill them. A good achievement to tie into with this one is the Bullseye achievement for headshots as one revolver shot to the head kills most enemies.

All single player and multiplayer kills count towards this achievement. You will need to earn kills online or offline, they do not stack towards the same same statistics.

There are various pistols and revolvers found through the open world. You can use any of the following pistols:

  • Cattleman Revolver
  • Volcanic Pistol
  • Semi-Automatic Pistol
  • High Power Pistol
  • Mauser Pistol
  • Shofield Revolver
  • Double-Action Revolver
  • Lemat Revolver

See "Long Arm of Marston"

As the description says, get 500 kills with any pistol in any game mode, meaning get 500 kills offline or online as they are not cumulative between them. This trophy will come naturally, however, if it doesn't unlock before you beat the game then use a pistol in Multiplayer as you need to reach Level 50 anyway. All pistols and revolvers count towards this trophy. If you decide to get this trophy online then your single player kills won't count. Kill 500 enemies with small firearms and the trophy will unlock.
