How to unlock the Mad Marston: The Trail Warrior achievement in Red Dead Redemption - Definitive Guide

There are four challenges in this dlc:

Four Horses of the Apocalypse:
Pestilence is often found in Tall Trees, I found him where you finish Birth of the Conservation Movement mission. War is located somewhere between Gaptooth Breach and Armadillo, I found him just south of Twin Peaks. Famine is in mexico around Torquemada or Chuparosa or Perdido, and you get Death for completing the dlc story. After you complete this challenge you will earn the Bloodpacts (deeds) for all four horses.

Undead Hunter:
For the kill 2 Bears, 3 cougars, and 5 wolves with the torch simply get on Pestilence or Death and swing the torch around with RT. You can find all of these animals in Tall Trees. Cougars and wolves can also be found just east of Torquemada as Guugley was kind enough to point out.

Undead Sharpshooter:
For Rank 3 equip a henry repeater and then open you inventory and equip Phosphorus bullets and get 5 head shots in one dead-eye meter. I did this at Jorge's Gap in U.S.A. To get phosphorus bullets you have to select them from your kit. But first you need to collect 5 desert sage and 5 violet snowdrops and give them to Nigel West Dickens during the first task of his mission A Cure for Most of What Ails You.
For Rank 4 You need to kill one of very kind of undead in one dead-eye meter. They are the Big Bruiser types (chubbies) Retchers which are greenish, Hunters or Bolters, which are the very skinny undead that crawl on all fours and the Normal undead. At least two of each will spawn at El Presidio
For Rank 5 Since you are already at El Presidio just stay far enough away that the undead won't rush you and snipe as many heads as you can within 8 seconds. You only need 5, not too hard. *JCKellner had a clever way to do this one: Run up to the undead with a sniper rifle and execute them by simply tapping RT when you are close enough. You will do an execution which is a guaranteed headshot.* Thanks for the info!

Treasure Hunter:
To find a map visit the cabin in Aurora's Basin or stop at any camp site with a chest. Be sure to kill the guy there or he will shoot at you for stealing his shit. I'll leave a link to a great video on the locations of treasure.

I just headed to Aurora Basin and there was no chest in it. Could it be that you can't to the trasure challenge when you are undead ?

You still can. I waited until i beat the story to do the undead challenges. You can always stop at any camp site along the roads to get a treasure map.

Just to let you know, for Undead Sharpshooter - Rank 5, you can use the phosphorus coating to make it WAY easier.

@Ddraig Gymraeg The only way you can switch to another undead horse is after you complete the challenge for them. Then you will be given Bloodpacts (deeds) for all four.

You can get Death before completing the story - i did. Found him in Torquemada thinking it was the unicorn which i had spent hours looking for, (the message about mythical creature and blue circle dont appear). It was only when i broke it and it said '4 horsemen rank 4 complete' that i realised. I know a few people have found it elsewhere.

Thanks for the guide, it has been a great help. One thing I can't understand though is why there are 4 negative votes???
Annoying that people vote negative when you have taken the time to write a solution! They are probably the people that don't bother writing one themselves!

I had a terrible time with Rank 5 of the sharpshooter. Eventually I went to el Presedio got up on one of the cannon towers threw bait as far as I could and then lined the zombies up as they walked toward the bait. Still I found it a lot more difficult than any of the other challenges.

Torch hunting was actually quite easy. I did it with Pestilence. They can't knock you off the horse and they come running to you so it was just a case of sit there and swipe.

@MormnDor2DorMan Just be patient. Try and fast travel back and forth from Cochinay way up north to Torquemada and then ride around southern and eastern Mexico. For me the last horse I needed was pestilence and it took me almost 2 hours riding around Tall Trees until I finally found him in a completely isolated place. It'll eventually just pop up. Good luck.

I found a good spot to farm cougars. Open your map and zoom in on the "El Presidio" text. Just above the "P" you will notice a small fork. Go there and follow the railroad north just a but. When you see a small plateau rise on your right hand side, stay there. You should not have traveled any more north than the El Presidio safe zone. I managed to spawn one cougar after the other at 6 am in-game.

Im growing tired of looking for it. I read that this horse could have a glitch, when u not get it after u saw it once near that area (torquemada) it doesnt apear at all anymore or it apears but doesnt show on the map... can anyone give me a tip or... i dont know...i really need some help here...

The tactic with fire bullets, it doesnt work. I tried, and tried, and tried. Over 15 times. I used up all my sage and snowdrops, and quite alot of ammo. Got killed three times doing it, and yet, they never got lit on fire with fire bullets when headshot in dead eye. They never got lit on fire in dead eye, and they didnt even get lit on fire with headshots. I shot one in the foot with fire bullets in dead eye, no fire. Nothing. Fail on the solution and a negative vote.

I spent hours hunting cougars. I finally found a spawn for them outside of El Presidio. Go out the west gate of El Presidio and continue past the fork. If you zoom all the way out and look at the building image next to casa madraguda, go due north of the middle of that building until you hit the road you are on. Go to that point and search south of the road and slightly east. I found 8 cougars in total.

I'll second SmithMan117, for undead sharpshooter rank 5 I worked hard at this but was able to unlock it by running into Jorges Gap and using the execution method, you could probably just stand near the entranc and start balsting away at head level as they are so tightly packed in there.

This was by far the hardest of the challenges.

For the Undead Sharpshooter, Rank 5, you even don't have to execute 5 zombies, you can just kill them with the stick of the riffle (also RT).

The solution for Undead Sharpshooter Rank 3 does not work. Headshotting them with Phosphorous ammo does not count because the undead die before being set on fire. You can use Phosphourous ammo, but you need a gun with at least ten shots because you have to shoot each zombie in the body first to set it on fire and then in the head to kill it.

By Warlord Zegron on 06 Apr 2013 16:02
Just did Undead Sharpshooter Rank 3 with Phosphorus bullets today. It works fine. Equip whatever gun you want(the more shots the better), use some phosphorus ammo and go into dead eye. Then mark the targets in the head and boom, done. It took me a few tries to remember how marking targets works, but it does get the challenge done. Sorry, Warlord Zegron, but it works just fine. You must be doing something wrong.

Phosphorus bullets is not an exact method. I only got flames one of the five times I did this and it didn't count because only four of the six that I targeted caught fire. There must be some variable or method that is left out in the description.

Been riding all over New Austin for two days looking for War, with no luck.

The last Undead Sharpshooter challenge was a pain in the ass until I found Jorge's Gap, some Undead Bait, and Phosphorous. Wound up shooting about 10 of them, but it only counts if they die from the shots or flames within 8 seconds of each other.

Don't use Death while trying to kill undead bears with the torch, if you're having trouble finding bears then it'll be very frustrating when they have a higher chance of dying from Death's aura than your torch.

For undead shooter rank 4, you can NOT just hug tie the four different undead types and shoot them near each other. They MUST be free. I recommend going to save a town; there should be a bunch there.

As previously mentioned several times in the above comments, for Undead Sharpshooter Rank 5, by far the easiest way of obtaining the 5 kills in 8 seconds is to camp at the entrance to Jorge’s Gap and pick them off from there. There are so many undead all bunched up together it made the challenge a piece of cake.

Also: If you want some FUN with your treasure hunting (instead of just a boring list of coordinates to visit), here's the first location from each rank:

1. Macfarlane's Ranch
2. Venter's Place
3. The Scratching Post
4. Sepulcro
5. Casa Madrugada

That way you can enjoy deciphering the rest of the clues yourself!

Two items I found most challenging:
-- I had lost my first Apocalypse horse because I didn't break it and was attacked (Tall Trees). I managed to find the horse later with no blue circle but a message that a mythical creature was in the area. It was difficult to find, but searching at night produced a clear mythical cloud trail that was easier to spot.
-- Sharpshooter Rank 5 was much easier by getting them in a line and using the sniper in close combat by repeatedly hitting RT for an execution. I even had time to melee a few in the process.

I personally found the animals (Bar the bear, of course) for the Undead Hunter challenge in East Mexico - just before you reach Torquemada. I just sat on Pestilance and swung away with the torch! I was expecting it to be quite time-consuming and annoying, but it was reasonably quick. I went to Bearclaw Camp for the bears. If they don't spawn, go and save at Manzanita Post and then try going back. Hope this helps. :)

@Skullsies for me it took almost 2 hours looking for the chupacabra. I finally found him just south of Las Hermanas. It has been reported in many different places in Mexico but it's more prevalent toward the center around and South of Perdido and Sepulcro. After I killed him I rode east to Torquemada and there was the unicorn. The unicorn appears as just a normal horse does so the game won't tell you there is a mythical creature around. Just keep an eye out for a white horse around Torquemada. If the unicorn doesn't spawn fast travel to somewhere in Tall Trees and fast travel back it should be there. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Rank 4 of Undead Sharpshooter - I tried to hogtie all 4 types of undead and then kill them in one dead-eye and it didn't work. Once I hit all 4 outside of El Presidio with all 4 of them standing it worked.
Rank 5 tried the same thing, hogtied 5 and shot the heads off with a sniper rifle and that didn't count. I then went to Jorge's gap and threw some bait and tried to kill 5 that way, and as I was aiming some of the undead came up to me and were right next to me and I ended up executing like 3 of them and that must of helped and counted because it finished off the challenges. Trying to hogtie the undead for rank 4 and 5 shartshooter doesn't work, but, executing them with the sniper rifle in close does count towards the Rank 5.

Here's a tip: when going for the level 4 Hunter challenge, don't use Death. The chance that you kill a flaming bear/cougar/wolf with your horse is very big... I found that riding Pestilence works best.

Undead Sharpshooter Rank 3 (another easy method):

Make sure you have dynamite in your inventory.
When doing the mission "A Cure for Most of What Ails You" you should receive a few bottles of zombie bait.

1. Go outside and throw the bait. Zombies should group together (sometimes even more than 10).
2. Throw a couple of fire bottles. Make sure 5 or more get in flames.
3. Equip Dynamite sticks.
4. Go into Dead-Eye.
5. Mark any zombie. Preferably one of the ones in the middle.
6. Throw Dynamite stick.
7. BOOM goes the dynamite!
8. Enjoy challenge done.

Johnol78 pointed a great fact about the horses of Apocalypse (and I confirm this fact) in his solution to kill the Chupacabra. If you are riding around on a horses of Apocalypse, you only need to get off of your horse and walk around for 5 seconds. I did this to kill the undead cougars. Immediately when I got off my horse and walked 5 seconds, a cougar was in my back.

By XPaTr0l on 25 Oct 2012 00:36
Additional: It took me FOREVER to find Cougars. I searched and searched and searched. Eventually I found one in the Fort Mercer area (actually south of Fort Mercer, but others say they found them north). Eventually one will appear. Just make sure you kill it (it doesn't matter how) and others will spawn.

It seemed the spawning worked faster if I searched the corpses, but that might just be random timing and nothing else.

Now doesn't this guide cover Rank 5 of hunting??

Edit: Ok for Rank 5 you need to kill the legendary Chupacabra. I just rode between Chuparrosa and Las Hermanas and I was alerted a mythical creature was in the area. Super easy to kill while riding Death!

I can verify that all the solutions, including the phosphorus bullet one, work absolutely fine. The sniper rifle RT trick was especially good. I did both of these in a few minutes outside El Presidio.

One thing to note with the phosphorus bullets is that they don't last a huge amount of time, and when you change gun, they seem to stop. So my advice is: Get a gun that can fire at least four bullets without reloading. Reload to ensure you won't break Dead Eye to reload. Then go outside El Presidio and make sure you can see all four zombie types.

Then trigger Phosphorus bullets from your Kit menu, and then go into Dead Eye. Shoot several of some types just to be absolutely sure. It should be VERY easy.

Just treasure hunting and that damn cougar/torch one to go. Thanks!

You mean, why people are downvoting your solution besides the obvious? (missing 3/4 of the solution for the actual achievement)
Yea, besides that, I'm as confused as you are.

The reason you're getting downvotes is because you've only addressed one of the four areas required for the achievement. Good solutions address everything. Yours doesn't come close. I added another downvote to your collection for this reason.

A guide on this website should be typed out with all relevant information needed to unlock the achievement. Any pictures or videos should supplement the guide. Not simply be the entire guide.
Even the video you provided is not yours. You definitely get a down vote. This is not a guide. This is a redirect to a different website.

Thought I would add to the above solutions the locations of the War, Femine and Chupacabra locations as those were the hardest to find, all of the locations are marked at the beginning and the end of the videos. Each of them took me from 20-30 minutes to find, it might be quicker or longer for some depending on luck. Just be persistent and they will pop up.

There are 4 Undead Nightmare challenges:

  • Undead Sharpshooter
  • Undead Hunter
  • Four Horses of the Apocalypse
  • Undead Treasure Hunter

The location of the horses:

  • Pestilence is found somewhere in between Tall Trees, Manzinita Post, and Aurora Basin.
  • War is located somewhere between Benedict Point, Tumbleweed and Gaptooth Breach.
  • Famine is located somewhere between Chuparosa and Tesoro Azul.
  • Death is given to the player after completing the main story, though may also be found in Mexico.

Undead Hunter:

  • To kill bears, wolfs and cougars with a torch, take the horse Pestilence as it can't die. Cougars are often found west of Torquemada and in Tall Trees, bears can be found in Tall Trees and wolfs can be found pretty much everywhere.

Undead Sharpshooter:

  • Rank 3: Equip Phosphorus bullets and make 5 headshots.
  • Rank 4: Go to El Presidio, as 2 of each spawn there.
  • Rank 5: Best way is to go to El Presidio, and execute (move close and press without aiming) the zombies.

Undead Treasure Hunter locations, click here for a map. (credits to Kaz928 for the map).

  1. To find a treasure map, find a chest at a random encounter which involves a camp.
  2. Far north of Hennigan's Stead, in a cove. You have to move outside the borders and high into the mountains.
  3. South east of Armadillo.
  4. At the south-western edge of New Austin.
  5. South-east of Las Hermanes.
  6. West of Casa Madrugada.

MISSABLE and GLITCHED

Warning: Famine is known to only spawn once but failing to break him during your first encounter, will also result in the Unicorn and Chupacabra not spawning. If this happens, then you will be locked out of this trophy for your current playthrough and have to start a new game from scratch.

All of the Undead Nightmare Challenges can tracked in the Journal in the Main Menu. There are 4 Challenges which each have 5 Ranks that you must complete to gain Legendary status.

Undead Hunter:

Undead Hunter Rank 1
Kill 100 Fresh Undead & 25 Bolters

This will come naturally by playing through the main story. Bolters are the fast crawling zombies that move on all fours and the Fresh Undead are just your ordinary zombie that can be found anywhere in the game.

Undead Hunter Rank 2
Kill 25 more Bruisers & 15 more Retchers

Retchers and Bruisers are most commonly found in graveyards but can also be found whilst cleansing towns also. Bruisers are the big zombies that charge at you and knock you down but Retchers will glow green and vomit green bile at you.

Undead Hunter Rank 3
Use a single explosion of a Retcher to kill 2 other undead.

GLITCHED

There have been reports of the Retcher explosion kill not registering but to work around this issue, close the game via the button and restart the game from your auto-save.

This challenge should unlock by progressing through the game but one of the best ways to get it is whilst cleansing a town. Make sure you have a Retcher spawned and wait until he has other zombies near him before taking him down. If done correctly, he should blow up and take at least 2 other zombies with him.

Undead Hunter Rank 4
Kill 2 undead bears, 5 undead wolves and 3 undead Cougars

Cougars, bears and wolves can be found in Tall Trees, the wolves are black instead of your usual white. Get a horse, preferably the Pestilence as its more or less immortal and circle the animals with the torch. Be aware of zombies and other animals as they will try to get you off your horse and kill you.

Undead Hunter Rank 5
Find and Kill a Chupacabra.

MISSABLE and GLITCHED

Please see Chupathingy for more details as this can be missable and glitched.

Undead Sharpshooter:

Undead Sharpshooter Rank 1
Kill 5 Undead in 10 seconds using a gun.

You will get this by just playing through the story but use Deadeye in conjunction with the Cattleman Revolver if you're struggling.

Undead Sharpshooter Rank 2
Headshot 10 undead in a row.

You need to headshot 10 zombies in a row, missing will reset the counter. Make sure to use Casual Aiming to make this easier and be aware of the Retchers as they will explode killing any zombies nearby thus resetting your counter. You can use Deadeye if needed.

Undead Sharpshooter Rank 3
Kill 5 flaming undead in 1 dead eye Meter.

Use Undead Bait to lure zombies, you need at least 5 grouped together.
throw a Fire Bottle at them to set them alight, and enter dead eye whilst holding a stick of Dynamite and throw it in the middle of the group.

You can also use War (one of the four horses of the Apocalypse) to set the undead ablaze, then enter Deadeye to pick off 5 zombies that are on fire. If you're struggling with this, there a a load of zombies at Jorge's Gap, run through them with the war horse and then enter Deadeye to pick them off.

Undead Sharpshooter Rank 4
Kill one of each of the 4 undead types in 1D Deadeye meter.

You need to kill the following 4 Undead types:

  • Regular
  • Retcher
  • Bruiser
  • Bolter

The best place for all 4 types to spawn close together is El Presidio, pick out the 4 different types of zombies and enter Deadeye.

Undead Sharpshooter Rank 5
Get 5 undead sniper kills in 8 seconds (can't use dead eye).

The best place to get this challenge is the front gate of El Presidio as there is an endless spawn of zombies and as the description says, you must use a sniper rifle and you cannot use Deadeye to kill 5 zombies in 8 seconds. The following method works best:

1: Find a pack of zombies.
2: Throw some Undead Bait to lure them to a spot of your choosing.
3: Now equip your sniper rifle and use () to execute 5 zombies.

Four Horses of the Apocalypse:

Four Horses of the Apocalypse, Ranks 1-4
Find the four Horses of the apocalypse.

You need to find and tame each of the following horses:

War ~ Black horse that has flames surrounding it, can be found near New Austin, Armadillo and Fort Mercer.

Famine (GLITCHED) ~ Can be either black, brown or dark gray and has a swarm of locusts around it. This horse will appear only once, usually between Torquemada and Diez Coronas. Note: You must break Famine during your first encounter with him, else there's a very good chance that he may run off and never respawn.

Death (Story related) ~ Can be either black, brown or dark gray and has ghostly trail follow it when it runs. You will receive this horse upon completing the main game. The horse can however be found near New Austin and Nuevo Paraiso.

Pestilence ~ Can be either white, dark brown or dark grey and can be found near West Elizabeth, Tall Trees, west of Thieves Landing and south of Broken Tree. Has a green, fog-like smoke around it.

Four Horses of the Apocalypse Rank 5
Kill one of each Undead Type using the fourth Horse of the apocalypse (Death)

Death will explode a zombie's heads on impact but the Undead types are as follows:

  • Fresh undead
  • Retcher
  • Bruiser
  • Bolter

Undead Treasure Hunter:

This series of challenges can only be started by a random event, because you must obtain a treasure map to start them. After finding a man sitting at a campsite (either eating or talking to a chained zombie. Look for a chest next to them and open it up to find the first treasure map. Opening the chest will likely cause the man to turn hostile and attack you.
