How to unlock the Righteous Cause achievement in Red Faction - Definitive Guide

Missable. Potentially Glitched.

Note: There is a chance that trophy can potentially glitch on you, in that it simply won't unlock upon meeting the requirements. If this does occur then you simply have to replay the game meeting the requirements until it unlocks. Fortunately this only takes around two hours on Easy.

This is one of the more annoying trophies in the game. You have to complete the game without killing any noncombatants and these are all the characters who don't attack you but will run around scared if you have a gun out, saying stuff like "Wait, I'm on your side!". Noncombatants include doctors, nurses, technicians, mechanics, scientists etc. You have to make sure you do not physically kill any of these characters yourself. It does not matter if they are killed by enemies as a result of crossfire, just as long as you are not the one who killed them. You will want to avoid using explosives while going for this trophy as you can accidentally kill a noncombatant without realising.

There are two noncombatants that the game urges you to kill but you can advance without killing them as they must kept them alive for the trophy. The first one is the Medical Administrator, in the Medical Labs. Normally, you have to kill him to acquire a keycard. However you can get him to give you the keycard by aiming your gun at him for roughly 3-4 minutes. Once the time has elapsed, the keycard will appear on his desk in front of him.

The other noncombatant is in the Train Tunnels where you have to activate a launch sequence. When you activate the launch sequence, you will be given 30 seconds to get back onto the tram before the area blows up. When you activate this, a technician will run into the room to deactivate the launch sequence, which if he succeeds will fail the game. You can bypass killing him by either running straight to the tram and boarding it (not feasible on higher difficulties - you will die trying) or alternatively, saving after you initiate the launch sequence and reloading the save. If you reload the save, the technician will just stand in the hallway and never run to deactivate the launch, meaning you don't need to rush to the tram.

To summarise, you will want to stick to these points:

  • Do not actively kill doctors, nurses, technicians, mechanics, scientists etc.
  • Do not kill the Medical Administrator.
  • Do not kill the Launch Sequence Technician.
  • Animals and mutants do not void the trophy.
  • Noncombatants killed by enemies do not void the trophy.
  • Surrendered enemies do not count as noncombatants, thus won't void the trophy.
  • Avoid using explosives as you may accidentally kill a noncombatant.
