While this doesn't exactly NEED a guide...
You start each mission with 2-3 food.
Pressing
lets you put down a tent, and pressing while in the tent lets you select a can of food with 
(right) on the D-pad.
Food is useful as the blue bar under your health is your "energy". You start quite fast and get gradually slower as your energy depletes. You don't NEED to eat, but its harder to avoid getting ganged up on by groups if you are at a walking pace.
In theory though, you can nab this cheevo at the start of any mission if you just want to get it out of the way.
More food can usually be found in boxes, but I never found a need to actively look for it.
