How to unlock the Power Chords achievement in Rock Band 3 - Definitive Guide

Currently, you must have the Fender Mustang Guitar to be able to do this!
The goal is in Pro Guitar - Introducing Pro Guitar Part 2 - Power Chords.
It can also be more usefully found in Training - Learn An Instrument - Pro Guitar.

Make sure you are comforatble playing the guitar! If you have to strain, try holding it a different way, adjusting the strap, change seating or standing position whatever. Just make sure you can play it.

It is the second "medium" lesson. I will refer to fingers as (from first to fourth) index, middle, ring, pinky and the strings as (from sixth to first) E, A, D, G, B, e. The sixth string "E" is the one that is closest to you and plays the lowest notes. You do not have to use the finger I tell you to, it is a guidline given by the game, as I tend to use my middle finger. You do not have to use the pick supplied as you can strum with your fingernail, or "pad" like a bassist. And to you musicians, you must put the fingers where it tells you, playing the exact same notes on a different string does not work in this game. To make it easier to read and follow, I refer to the frets by numbers (1) rather than by placements (1st). I've also put it in tablature so you can understand what chords are upcoming, it doesn't show you what the strumming pattern is though.

Part 1 - Open E Power Chord

Pretty simple, put your index finger on the 2 fret on the A string and strum an E5 chord in time. Keep hold of it for the sustain. "Avoid strumming the strings that aren't part of the choard", there is a bit of leeway with this. Not too difficult. The 0 means that you should not press down on any part of that string.

E|0

Part 2 - Open A Power Chord

Exact same thing but put the index on the D string instead.

D|2
A|0
E|-

Part 3 - More Power Chords

This is a little tricky, the first chord played by putting your index on the 5 fret on the E string and putting your ring finger on the 7 fret on the A string. Play through the bars, then slide your entire hand down so your index is on the 3 fret on the E string.

A|7-5
E|5-3

Part 4 - Power Chords on the A string

Same thing, but one string down and in reverse.

D|3-5
A|1-3
E|---

Part 5 - A string and E String Power Chords

Similar to before. Keep the same chord shape with your hand, index on the root note and ring on a string up and two frets up. This may take some practice as you have to move up the neck and up strings, then move down the neck. Slow down if necessary.

D|---7-5
A|5-5-3
E|3-----

Part 6 - Power Chords and Notes

You'll now move to playing notes as well. For the first bit, play the F#5 chord, then play the first two notes and move your index finger up a string to play the last of those three notes. Then play the the B chord by keeping your index finger on the root and using your ring to play the 4. I've put in the strumming pattern for this one.

D|-----------4-4------
A|4-4--42-2-2-244
E|2-2-2--------------

Part 7 - Drop D Tuning

Don't worry about tuning, it's just teaching you some theory. The sixth string is tuned down two notes which is why the chords will sound differnt. Nevertheless play them. They're all barre chords which you could play by holding down the frets with one finger or two. You can cover the entire neck with your finger(s) as long you dont play other strings, it still allows you some lee way though.

A|0-3-0-0-3-0-0-3-0-0-3-0-1-0
E|0-3-0-0-3-0-0-3-0-0-3-0-1-0

Part 8 - Muted Chords

For this game, it does not matter where on the string your hand is when playing a muted chord. This chord is a 'raised flat' chord with no numbers on it, and subtely marked by small x's. Once you strum the right strings you'll hit the chord.

A|5-7-xxx
E|3-5-xxx

You can approach the parts of the lesson in any order you like, but you must 100% the part at 100% speed to complete the part. Complete all parts will get you the achievement.

This took a bit of practice, especially lesson #6, but I finally got it. Thanks for writing out the tabs, that helped.

You'll need the MadCatz Mustang Pro guitar for this. You can also use the pause/rewind exploit detailed in the Pro Keys Graduate trophy. You must do the Lessons on 100% speed.

This is one of the more basic lessons for Pro Guitar and can be accessed from the Goals menu (Pro Guitar > Introducing Pro Guitar Part 2 > Power Chords) or the Training Menu. It should provide a good introduction to the pro guitar.

Theshieguy has written an excellent set of instructions for this if you are struggling. Check it out here. Note that the pause method described has been patched and no longer works.
