How to unlock the The Unspeakable Deep achievement in Salt and Sanctuary - Definitive Guide
Now, the way to beat the boss is pretty simple. You want to roll a character like normal, but as soon as the game starts we will unequip extra weapons/shield and some armor until Equip Load is 10.0 or less. Fast dodging is vital. I went with Cleric because you start with Blessed Pages, which are consumables which buff your weapon damage for a short time.
Once your equipment is set up, run to the right and jump over the NPC ahead of you. It isn't hostile but it begins a conversation and summons an enemy which slows us down. Climb up the ladder and start moving left along the walkway filled with people fighting. You can dodge through each pair easily, but watch your stamina near the end. The enemies will follow you so make your way outside as soon as possible or you run the risk of them being in the boss arena with you.
Boss strategy is easy enough; run up against it and dodge straight through it. It's easy to do, and puts you out of range of the shockwaves it creates with every attack. Once behind you have a chance to attack once, twice or three times depending on your weapon. Do so and then when the boss begins the next attack animation reapeat the process by dodging back through it.
If you picked a class with a consumable(Blessed Pages, throwable bombs) use those when you have an opening. Don't panic, remember to stop attacking when the boss turns towards you and leave enough stamina to dodge roll. Getting hit once will likely kill you which means restarting again.
Killing the boss rewards Salt, Gold and once you wake up after the prologue some rare items. Good luck!
The Unspeakable Deep only has 3 moves, which are very easily predictable, and all have the same dodging strategy. Unequip all your armor and shields so you can roll fast and far. When he starts to attack roll through him and hit him in the back. If you are the thief you can do two or three hits, anyone else with a slow weapon should only do one. He will then turn around and begin to attack again. So roll through him and hit his back. It will take time, but very doable.
If you die, I found it was fastest to just exit out of the game, close it, and restart a new character. It should only take a few tries to get his patterns down and crush him.
Just hit, dodge his attack, and repeat. He telegraphs his moves pretty clearly, so keep an eye on what he's about to do. It should take maybe four or five minutes and he'll eventually get whittled down.
MISSABLE
The Unspeakable Deep is the tutorial boss, found at the top of the ship. You have only one chance per character to kill this boss. Whenever you die on the tutorial (either to him or on the way to face him), you will be thrown into the Shivering Shore, missing the opportunity to get this trophy for that playthrough. To face him again, you will have to create a new character. Beware that you do not have the chance to face him when you get to NG+ - you must create a new character to take part of the tutorial again.
This is technically the first trophy you may acquire, though it is unlikely to happen. Even though you may be familiar with the Souls series mechanics, a newcomer will probably die to him. It is suggested you try to get this trophy after you have played this game for a while.
The Unspeakable Deep's attacks are based on physical damage, which is also his strength. He is weak against all kinds of elemental damage, though. Due to that, a good starting class is the Cleric, as he starts with Blessed Pages (holy damage buff) and Mend (healing prayer). The Paladin starts with five Lightvessels, which is a holy damage bomb. You can use that to your advantage as well.
The Unspeakable Deep's attack list is short, and they are all easily avoidable, which makes the fight a bit easier. The main problem with it is that both your damage and your defense are way too small - the boss kills you in two hits, and you almost don't damage him per attack. Since your defense is already atrocious, you might as well unequip some armor to get less than 25% equip load, which will let you quick roll. Rolling through him will be your main concern to avoid his attacks. Also, equip your weapon with both hands to maximize the damage you output.
The boss will perform the following attacks:
- Leap attack - The boss will leap forward, hitting the ground in front of him, which creates a wave of damage around that area. Roll through him to attack his back.
- Slam attack - The boss will slam the ground in front of him with both his hands, creating a big wave of damage around that area. Roll through him to avoid this attack.
- Punch attack - The boss will punch the ground in front of him with one of his hands, creating a small wave of damage around that area. Again, roll through him to avoid this attack.
Upon victory, you will receive: Shimmering Pearl, Drowned Tome, Black Pearl.
