How to unlock the DARK! achievement in Sonic Adventure 2 - Definitive Guide

This achievement is fairly easy really, if you're a veteran of SA2 or not. On the menu, choose to play 1P and story, then choose the dark story.

There's fourteen levels to complete in the hero side of the story, split between Shadow, Rouge and Eggman. Unlike the Hero story, there are more levels for Eggman this time.

Tips:

Shadow levels are the fastest levels of the three, representing Sonic on the dark side. However, be aware at all times that there can be sections where you have to do technical aspects. During these sections, take your time if you want to be sure of the completion. In particular, the later levels (Final Chase being the main one) has quite long sections where you aren't really racing through like you'd expect. Time, Rank, Score, or anything like that don't matter, so don't worry about going too slow. in Final Chase, really try to make sure of the jumps onto the gravity cylinders, as sometimes they can be quite glitchy and when you think you've got it, you can miss and fall. also, beat enemies to avoid them shooting you in midjump and causing you to completely miss everything, some of the blue 'chaos' style enemies have quite a range

Eggman levels are run and gun, or rather walk and gun. The best tip for Eggman is to hold the shoot botton (X is easiest) for the good majority of the time, and you'll automatically target anything that flies towards you. These enemies are the biggest pain, not really doing much to damage you greatly, but it can knock you off the level to a certain life loss. These levels are harder than the Tails levels on the hero side, but still not too tricky. In Cosmic Wall, there is less gravity than normal. Rather than this being a hinderance, it can aid you better because you don't have to deal with the rubbish jumping ability of Eggman's robot.

Rouge levels are mainly just irritating, while not being much of a problem to losing lives or not being able to complete. They're more time consuming though. You have to find 3 shards of the master emerald within the level, which can be hidden in various boxes, enemies and underground or within walls. Either that or they can be simply floating around, on a certain path or stationary. They do however, have certain places which they can be, so you can memorise some locations if you die. Get clues by reading the monitor screens, which then all the clues you gather after the first will relate to the same emerald shard. after you gather that, the next clue will relate to another and all following relate to that and so on. This doesn't mean you can't collect the other gems that you don't have the clues to, but they will be either by accident or fantastic eyesight. As you near the emerald, the radar at the bottom of the screen will light up, first green, then yellow, then red, and a chiming sound cn be heard. When you are really close to the emerald, a red bubble with an exclamation mark above Rouge's head to let you know you are very close. use these to close into the emerald. Often, the Rouge levels have extra things to deal with, which makes them a little trickier than Knuckles' levels. Security Hall has a five minute time limit, but the level itself is fairly small, and you should be able to do it. Some of the emeralds in this level can be behind security doors, drill into the middle of the over that center screen to open them. Egg Quarters has a beetle robot that roams the level and can shoot you with lasers. hide in the shadows whenever the screen beings to flash. Mad Space is very tricky. The clues and monitor readings are reversed. Some are literally written backwards, others give false information which can be annoying. The level itself is massive though, which can mean huge amounts of time spent searching this level for them.

as for the bosses, mostly they are repetitive, with the only real tough fights being the ones between the hero characters once you get closer to the end of the game. In the fight against Knuckles, keep hold of a couple of rings and go on the offensive, he can be damaged by punches, or by using drill claw on top of him. For Tails, keep on the move and try to stay away from the centre as you dont want to be caught in an explosion. If Tails goes near the middle, target the green floating container and shoot it to make it explode, hopefully catching him. When he shoots missiles, move quickly to avoid, but the laser needs to you move behind him for a nice cheap shot. Be warned that the laser can damage heavily, and hit you twice if you get caught badly by it. Avoid at all costs. For the final Sonic fight, when you're on the move, use the rings to your advantage. Wait for him to appear in the middle of a line of rings in the middle, and then use your light dash to damage him. Sometimes it doesn't work, but its the best method that hits more sucessfully than homing attacks.

Good Luck

Special Character Upgrades:
While you are playing through the Dark Story you will run into situations where you are forced to find the newest upgrade for your character, however, there are some upgrades that aren't required to complete which you must go back and obtain through stage select. These special upgrades will be important in completing all the stages for one mission and obtaining your A Ranks.

Shadow The Hedgehog:

By default you will unlock the following upgrades while you are playing through the DARK story:

  • Air Shoes (White Jungle)

Missing Upgrades:

Flame Ring (Radical Highway)
You will require the Air Shoes to unlock this. After you make it to a lift with a "Road Closed Ahead" sign on the side, move forward and jump on the spring and it will launch you on top the highway. Instead of moving forward in the highways direction turn to the other-side and there will be roller you can spin under and then use the Air Shoes and press at the tip of the line of rings leading you to the Flame Ring.

Ancient Light (Sky Rail)
This one comes fairly easy and quick in the level, near the start proceed forward until you see a platform with a rocket in the middle. Skip ahead to the platform behind it and make your way to the left near the Chao Box. Jump to the left side and GUN machines will appear, use your homing attack to hit each of them and make you're way to a spring which will launch you to the Ancient Light upgrade.

Mystic Melody (Final Chase)
Proceeding through the level you will run into a part where you must run up the gravity pipes, keep running up all of them until you reach the top. In the back there should be a gravity pipe with an electric field covering part of it. Jump over and move up the gravity pipe and it will lead you to the Mystic Melody upgrade.

Rouge:

By default you will unlock the following upgrades while you are playing through the DARK story:

  • Pick Nails (Egg Quarters)
  • Iron Boots (Mad Space)

Missing Upgrades:

Mystic Melody (Dry Lagoon)
To unlock this you will require the Pink Nails upgrade. At the start of the level fly to your left under the platform and dig into the wall painting on the wall (it should be in the middle of a circular part of the painting). Once you dig in you should be in a chamber with the Mystic Melody.

Treasure Scope (Security Hall)
To unlock this you will require the Iron Boots and Mystic Melody upgrades. At the starting pint of the level make your way to the right and climb on the wall, you'll notice as you go up there is a small passage blocked off by GUN crates. Fly toward the other-side and as you land there will be a ruin where you can play the Mystic Melody, this will reveal platforms to lead you to the GUN Crates. Destroy the crates and it will lead you to the Treasure Score.

Dr. Eggman:

By default you will unlock the following upgrades while you are playing through the DARK story:

  • Jet Engine (Lost Colony)
  • Large Cannon (Weapons Bed)

Missing Upgrades:

Large Blaster (Iron Gate)
This requires the Large Cannon to unlock. After going down a slow red lift with GUN machines spawning as you go down You'll be led into a room, in front of you will be GUN Crates, destroy them and it will reveal the path to the Large Blaster.

Mystic Melody (Sand Ocean)
This will require the Jet Engine upgrade. At the start of the level there will be a rotating structure, jump on it and stay on the edge of one of its end until it points you to the left side. The camera view should change and you should the Mystic Melody right across. Jump and hold to use the Jet Engine to hover your way over to pick it up.

Protective Armor (Cosmic Wall)
This one is a bit tricky, proceeding through the level normally you will make it to a point where you are using balloons to push you upward and then you'll go over a wall and have to go back down. Here you want to go down to the 4th platform, you'll notice there's another platform right after the 3rd one which actually contains the Protective Armor upgrade. On the 4th platform press the green button to launch a rocket to destroy the cage blocking the way and slowly hover your in from the top. If done correctly you should obtain the Protective Armor.
