How to unlock the HERO! achievement in Sonic Adventure 2 - Definitive Guide

This achievement is fairly easy really, if you're a veteran of SA2 or not. On the menu, choose to play 1P and story, then choose the hero story.

There's sixteen levels to complete in the hero side of the story, split between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. Sonic gets more levels than the other two, but only a couple more.

Tips:

Sonic levels are, as you'd expect, the fast paced section of the game. However, be aware at all times that there can be sections where you have to do technical aspects as Sonic. During these sections, take your time if you want to be sure of the completion. In particular, the later levels (Crazy Gadget being the main one) has quite long sections where you aren't really racing through like you'd expect. Time, Rank, Score, or anything like that don't matter, so don't worry about going too slow.

Tails' levels are run and gun, or rather walk and gun. The best tip for Tails is to hold the shoot botton (X is easiest) for the good majority of the time, and you'll automatically target anything that flies towards you. These enemies are the biggest pain, not really doing much to damage you greatly, but it can knock you off the level to a certain life loss. These levels are mostly not too hard, as you don't die when automatically hit when you have no rings, and you can regain health by collecting rings. Use hover often (you get it in the second tails level)

Knuckles levels are mainly just irritating, while not being much of a problem to losing lives or not being able to complete. They're more time consuming though. You have to find 3 shards of the master emerald within the level, which can be hidden in various boxes, enemies and underground or within walls. Either that or they can be simply floating around, on a certain path or stationary. They do however, have certain places which they can be, so you can memorise some locations if you die. Get clues by reading the monitor screens, which then all the clues you gather after the first will relate to the same emerald shard. after you gather that, the next clue will relate to another and all following relate to that and so on. This doesn't mean you can't collect the other gems that you don't have the clues to, but they will be either by accident or fantastic eyesight. As you near the emerald, the radar at the bottom of the screen will light up, first green, then yellow, then red, and a chiming sound cn be heard. When you are really close to the emerald, a red bubble with an exclamation mark above knuckles' head to let you know you are very close. use these to close into the emerald. Some Knuckles Levels, especially his final one can take in excess of 10 minutes.

as for the bosses, mostly they are repetitive, with the only real tough fights being the ones between the dark characters once you get closer to the end of the game. In the fight against Rouge, keep hold of a couple of rings and go on the offensive, she can be damaged by punches, or by using drill claw on top of her. For Eggman as Tails, keep on the move and try to stay away from the centre as you dont want to be caught in an explosion. If Eggman goes near the middle, target the green floating container and shoot it to make it explode, hopefully catching him. When he shoots missiles, move quickly to avoid, but the laser needs to you move behind him for a nice cheap shot. Be warned that the laser can damage heavily, and hit you twice if you get caught badly by it. Avoid at all costs. For the final Shadow fight, when you're on the move, use the rings to your advantage. Wait for him to Chaos Control into the middle of a line of rings in the middle, and then use your light dash to damage him. Sometimes it doesn't work, but its the best method that hits more sucessfully than homing attacks.

Good Luck

EDIT: can any negative voters add a comment when you vote and let me know why you voted that way so I can improve it please?

HERO! - 20G (Original Achievement)

Difficulty: 4/10

This is literally a Story Based Achievement and cannot be missed as long as you complete every level along the way.

To get this, pick the "Story" option from the main menu and select the "Hero Story" You will play every level and fight all the bosses as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.

Sonic: Sonic's levels are fast paced, run to the Goal Ring missions. You can be as slow as you want and get an E rank in every level and still get this Achievement in the end. So take your time or rush, its your call.

Tails: Tails' levels are Target Shooting, while moving to the Goal Ring, missions. Once again you can get a pathetic score and get an E Rank and still get this achievement in the end.

Knuckles: Knuckles' levels are hunting 3 Emerald Shards (or Keys) missions. Again you can take forever and get an E Rank, and still get this Achievement in the end.

The Story plays out in order as follows:

1. City Escape: Sonic
2. Boss: Big Foot (Sonic)
3. Wild Canyon (Knuckles)
4. Boss: Dr. Eggman (Tails)
5. Prison Lane (Tails)
6. Metal Harbor (Sonic)
7. Boss: Shadow (Sonic)

11. Aquatic Mine (Knuckles)
12. Route 101 (Tails) (This is a driving course, simply drive to the end)

Green Forest
Pumpkin Hill
Mission Street
Aquatic Mine
Route 101
Hidden Base
Pyramid Cave
Death Chamber
Eternal Engine

Special Character Upgrades:
While you are playing through the Hero Story you will run into situations where you are forced to find the newest upgrade for your character, however, there are some upgrades that aren't required to complete which you must go back and obtain through stage select. These special upgrades will be important in completing all the stages for one mission and obtaining your A Ranks.

Sonic The Hedgehog:

By default you will unlock the following upgrades while you are playing through the HERO story:

  • Air Shoes (Metal Harbor)
  • Bounce Bracelet (Pyramid Cave)
  • Flame Ring (Crazy Gadget)

Missing Upgrades:

Magic Gloves (City Escape)
Before you can do this you must have the Bounce Bracelet and Flame Ring. This will be located after the 2nd Chao Box location, you'll reach a checkpoint and what looks to be a park. Proceed forward and through a loop down a building side. Once you make it down you'll more than likely launch up and land on a rail that you will be swinging on. Drop down and move forward on foot and in the middle will be a set of GUN boxes, jump up and hit to use the Bounce Bracelet. Combined with the Flame Ring you should be able to destroy it and reveal the Magic Gloves.

Ancient Light (Green Forest)
After the second checkpoint there will be two boosters which will launch you through a loop and upward. You will now be in front of a closed forest area that you must go through, however, if you have Sonic face the camera and move forward to the right corner you will see a GUN machine. Use his homing attack to destroy it and the 2 GUN machines after it and land on the platform right afterwards. On the platform will be the upgrade for the Ancient Light.

Mystic Melody (Final Rush)
After around the 5th checkpoint you will reach a point where there are two rails you can choose between to proceed. Go on the left rail and follow it down, here's where the tricky part is. On the next rail down there's a platform to the side, you must jump onto that platform and get on the rocket on that platform. It will launch you to another stray platform, from there you must reach the platform right ahead of you and have the spring launch you forward. Follow the path from here and go up the slated rail (hone in on it and use to crouch and keep your speed up). At the end of the path will be the Mystic Melody.

Knuckles:

By default you will unlock the following upgrades while you are playing through the HERO story:

  • Shovel Claw (Pumpkin Hill)
  • Hammer Gloves (Meteor Herd)

Missing Upgrades:

Mystic Melody (Wild Canyon)
You require the Shovel Claw before trying to unlock this.At the start of the level go up the lift and head to the right where there's wind windmills on the sides as you enter that narrow path. Assuming you went through the correct side there will be a statue at the end against the wall. Climb up and dig through he carvings in the wall and it will lead you to the Mystic Melody.

Air Necklace (Aquatic Mine)
From the beginning of the level you want to climb up the center and use the lift to pull yourself up, inside this area will be a switch to drain the water down all the way. Go to the second floor and find the "caution" sign, go down the path and if it's the right one there will be a spring and a tunnel when you go down it. You have to be quick about this one, you have to swim through the tunnel quickly and at the end of the path will be the Air Necklace.

Sunglasses (Meteor Herd)
After your fight with Rouge go down that platform where the fight was and look for a door with a flashing red light, go across it to the platform and punch the large meteor into the door (this may take a couple tries). Go up to the destroyed door and destroy the GUN crate to reveal and activate a switch. Go up the platform where you fought Rouge and dive down into the lava area. On one of the platforms will be the Sunglasses.

Tails:

By default you will unlock the following upgrades while you are playing through the HERO story:

  • Booster (Mission Street)
  • Bazooka (Eternal Engine)

Missing Upgrades:

Laser Blaster (Prison Lane)
For this upgrade you require the Bazooka first, when you reach the room with the goal ring DO NOT touch the goal ring just yet. To the left back corner will be some crates, go over and destroy the crates and the GUN machines that appear after. After you have destroyed them the prison cell will open and you can step in to receive your Laser Blaster upgrade.

Mystic Melody (Hidden Base)
For this upgrade you require the Bazooka first, proceed through the level normally and after a while you'll be forced to use a lot of lifts. Keep moving forward and you'll find yourself in a relatively open space. To the bottom left move down and it will reveal GUN crates, destroy them and ahead will be the Mystic Melody upgrade.
