How to unlock the You Are The Legend achievement in Sonic Adventure 2 - Definitive Guide
Mission 1 = Normal Mode
This is the default mission and just requires you to finish the stage. Your Rank here is based on your score, your score is stacked up around:
The time it takes you to complete the stage,
The rings you collect in the stage (10 points per ring collected instantly) (Unlike in other Sonic games, you're not awarded a ring bonus for kept rings at the end, so after the initial 10 points for the ring when it is collected, you don't have to worry about losing them in this mission) It should be noted however that the amount of rings you have changes the bonuses you gain when you pass through check points, once you get enough to be awarded 20 rings or shields that's an extra 200 points just for passing the check point. So keep the rings if you can :)
Combos on enemies, these are racked up by the amount of enemies you kill in a row with homing spin without sonic touching the ground between them. This works similarly with Eggman/Tails with their laser guided combos. The more enemies destroyed in one go, the more points you get.
Stunts, jumping ramps, grinding continuously without slowing down too much or falling off between grinding chains.
You have to strike a balance between all of the above to get the best score, you can't simply rush through the stage for the best time, as without the rest you won't score high enough. Equally you can't just kill robots and spend 20 minutes doing it because you'll rarely score enough this way without the time bonus.
Mission 2 = Collect 100 Rings
This mission requires you to collect 100 rings in as fast a time as possible. So typically you'll ignore enemies where possible, and concentrate on the fastest route to rings. Score is completely unimportant.
Mission 3 = Find the lost Chao
This mission requires the Mystic Melody ability with each and every character in order to complete it. You will fine a ruin/altar in each stage, you need to play Mystic Melody at these in order to unlock the way forward to finding the Chao. This can be a row of rings for Light Dash or a spring to reach a high ledge etc. Finding the Chao is also only based on the time it takes you, rings and score etc isn't important, just rush to the Chao. Below is the stages you find Mystic Melody with each character (Keep in mind it's off the beaten track)
Sonic: Final Rush
Tails: Hidden Base
Knuckles: Wild Canyon
Shadow: Final Chase
Eggman: Sand Ocean
Rouge: Dry Lagoon
Mission 4 = Time Attack
This mission requires you to complete the stage in a certain amount of time, you have to take a bit of the strategy from mission 1 and apply it here. You need to score the minimum amount while finishing the stage a lot quicker than you might usually, so it's all about hitting the big points where possible, but not slowing down for the single enemy or small amount of rings out of the way. No checkpoints in this mission, so if you die you start from scratch.
Mission 5 = Hard Mode
Hard mode is as it's called, a harder version of the basic level. This usually involves more pitfalls, more enemies which are much more aggressive, less power ups etc. You just need to learn the new stage layout and eventually you can finish it like you would the basic version. Again it's all about score so the strategy from mission 1 comes in again.

Ace's guide above is very good and I suggest using that for your A run requirements. If you want to see some videos to get A ranks, I suggest MarioSunshineSprites (changed his name to Bruce Norse or something, just search MarioSunshineSprites and you'll see it) on YouTube. His videos helped me out massively in getting the 100 Rings and lost chao'. If you need help with Missions 1,4, and 5, with Sonic and Shadow, always try to pull of tricks when going off ramps or when jumping off certain rails. For Tails and Eggman, try to lock onto as many enemies as you can before firing to get the perfect 2000 points (especially in Cosmic Wall). Lastly for Rouge and Knuckles try NOT to use Hint Screens or you will lose points. If you search the main areas enough your radar will go off and you'll get the perfect 2000. (In Mad Space and Meteor Herd, you can use 1 Hint Monitor per Emerald to help.)
However there is something else you should keep in mind. You will need some characters upgrades to finish Hard Mode in each level. Such as Rouge's Treasure Scope and Knuckles' Sunglasses. Below is just a simple list to explain where the upgrades are and what they do.
Sonic:
Magic Hands - City Escape - Transforms an enemy into a ball that Sonic can throw. (basically useless, but requires the Bounce Bracelet and Flame Ring to reach.)
Light Shoes - Metal Harbor - Allow Sonic to travel at light speed along a trail of Rings. (Story Related)
Green Forest - Ancient Light - Allows Sonic to charge up his spin dash to attack a group of enemies at light speed.
Pyramid Cave - Bounce Bracelet - Allows Sonic to bounce on the spot to reach higher locations or break boxes under him. (Story Related)
Crazy Gadget - Flame Ring - Allows Sonic to break Metal boxes with a flaming somersault.
Final Rush - Mystic Melody - Allows Sonic to activate small temples to find lost chao.
Tails:
Prison Lane - Laser Blaster - Increases Tails firing radius and attack power. (Requires the Bazooka)
Mission Street - Booster - Allows Tails to hover (Story Related)
Hidden Base - Mystic Melody - Allows Tails to activate small temples to find lost chao. (Requires Bazooka)
Eternal Engine - Bazooka - Allows Tails to break Metal Boxes. (Story Related)
Knuckles:
Wild Canyon - Mystic Melody - Allows Knuckles to activate small temples to find lost chao. (Requires Shovel Claw)
Pumpkin Hill - Shovel Claw - Allows Knuckles to dig into the ground and walls.
Aquatic Mine - Air Necklace - Allows Knuckles to breathe underwater.
Death Chamber - Hammer Gloves - Allows Knuckles to break Metal Boxes.
Meteor Herd - Sunglasses - Allows Knuckles to see invisible items after equipping them. (Requires Hammer Gloves)
Shadow:
Radical Highway - Flame Ring - Allows Shadow to break Metal Boxes.
White Jungle - Air Shoes - Allows Shadow to travel along trails of Rings at light speed. (Story Related)
Sky Rail - Ancient Light - Allows Shadow to charge up his spin dash to attack a group of enemies at light speed.
Final Chase - Mystic Melody - Allows Shadow to activate small temples to find lost chao.
Dr. Eggman:
Iron Gate - Laser Blaster - Increases Dr. Eggman's attack radius and damage. (Requires Large Cannon)
Sand Ocean - Mystic Melody - Allows Dr. Eggman to activate small temples to find lost chao. (Requires Jet Engine)
Lost Colony - Jet Engine - Allows Dr. Eggman to hover. (Story Related)
Weapons Bed - Large Cannon - Allows Dr. Eggman to break Metal Boxes. (Story Related)
Cosmic Wall - Protective Armor - Increases Dr. Eggman's Defense.
Rouge:
Dry Lagoon - Mystic Melody - Allows Rouge to activate small temples to find lost chao. (Requires Pick Nails)
Egg Quarters - Pick Nails - Allows Rouge to dig into the ground or walls. (Story Related)
Security Hall - Treasure Scope - Allows Rouge to see invisible objects when equipped. (Requires Iron Boots and Mystic Melody)
Mad Space - Iron Boots - Allows Rouge to break Metal Boxes. (Possibly Story Related)

Hit one of the hint computers on the levels, hit CTRL+F on your laptop type in the hint to find it instantly and the guide will tell you where to go. Remember to change the tab at the bottom of the page to select the current level you're on.
Score/time requirements for each level
https://www.supercheats.com/gamecube/walkthroughs/sonic....txt
Most of these are correct, the only one that varies as far as I noticed was Cosmic wall, all require much higher scores than listed, e.g. mission 5 you need 100,000 and not 50,000.
Here a YouTube playlist, this guy does great videos, the strategy used in the guides ultimately feel attainable and isn't some crazy advanced speedrun or something like that.

Note: For the hunting missions you probably won't need the guide until the later/larger levels
Feel free to comment any suggestions
For this trophy you must complete every mission with an A Rank, this is no simple task but it is manageable. For most missions your A Rank is dependent on the amount of points you have at the end of the mission, you can hold a record time in clearing the mission but if you skipped every enemy and every ring then it wouldn't even matter. Here is a quick review of the 5 missions connected with each stage:
- Complete the level (Points)
- Collect 100 Rings! (Time Based)
- Find the lost Chao! (Time Based)
- Reach the goal (Find the Emerald pieces/Keys) in x minutes x seconds! (Score Based)
- Clear Hard Mode! (Score Based)
General Points Tips:
Point are given to you for everything, killing an enemy (or multiple enemies), grabbing a ring and doing tricks when possible. Needless to say if you die your score resets and you might as well start over from the beginning (you don't want this to happen). Keep IGNs Sonic Adventure A-Rank Guide handy as it will tell you required points and times needed for A ranking missions. Keep these additional tips in mind when going for A Ranks.
Golden GUN Beetle
In every stage there is a Golden GUN Beetle located within the level, its position is always preset so it will always appear in the same spot (except for on Hard Mode Missions). Destroying these Golden GUN Beatles give you a free 1,000 points which is a lot. The problem though is that they don't appear until you get near their location and you must kill them almost immediately, otherwise they will disappear for the rest of the mission. Keep Golden GUN Beetle locations in mind before going for your A Rank in a mission.
Combo Attacks/Tricks
When you kill an enemy you only get set amount of points for killing it however when you kill multiple enemies in a row, one after the other, you get a special bonus depending on the amount of enemies you killed on-top of the points you already earn from killing them. Lets take a look at the bonuses. The amounts they give and amount of enemies killed in the combo for it:
- Good: 100 (2)
- Nice: 200 (3)
- Great: 300 (4)
- Jammin': 400 (5)
- Cool: 500 (6)
- Radical: 700 (7)
- Tight: 800 (8)
- Awesome: 1000 (9)
- Extreme: 1500 (10)
- Perfect: 2000 (11+)
Using Sonic and Shadow you also get similar bonuses for doing tricks off ramps (pressing at the right time at the edge of the ramp) and for grinding on multiple ramps. Tails and Dr. Eggman are the ones who will be using these bonuses more often due to their multi-homing shot.
Lost Chao and Collect 100 Ring Missions
For these missions because your A Rank depends on time and not your score you want to complete as soon as possible, skipping enemies is highly recommended when playing these missions. To make it even easier for you using an online guide to find out where the lost Chao is and best route to collect the rings would be recommended prior before taking on the mission to save you time.
Character Specific Tips:
Characters differ in what they can do and how their missions are laid out so here are some character specific tips to consider when playing for the respective characters from HERO and DARK.
IMPORTANT REMINDER: Remember to unlock the upgrades for every character before attempting the A-Ranks. Whilst some of them may not be required for earlier missions, they are still great assets to have to utilize and help aid you in your quest for A Ranks. They are required for most HARD missions as well as Lost Chao missions. Upgrade locations are detailed under HERO! and DARK! earlier in the guide.
Sonic and Shadow:
While their levels are pretty lengthy, it is just a simple path going in one direction so don't feel the need to break records when you are going for A Ranks. Take the time to collect rings and destroy enemies as they do add to your points.
- Destroy as many enemies as you can with their homing attacks (jump up and hit and then while still in the air press to immediately attack the next nearby enemy). If you have the Ancient Light upgrade you can use this to make dealing with enemies much quicker and rack you points as well.
- Grind on all the rails you can. If there are multiple rails try jumping from rail to rail. If you keep it going long enough you will get a bonus similar to the multiple enemy kill count
- Jump off all ramps at full speed at the very tip of the ramp. If you do it successfully you will do a trick which will add bonus points to your score.
Knuckles and Rouge:
Hunting missions are by far the worse especially if you are unaware of the options you have when dealing with their missions. There various factors you want to consider when aiming for your A Rank.
- You earn points when you find your object, how long you took to find it and how many hints you took also factor into the bonus points you earn. If you don't use any hints and find the object in good time you will earn a PERFECT bonus for an extra 2000 points. Don't feel as if the only way to earn A Rank is to go through without using any hints, if you earn 2/3 of the PERFECT bonuses you can spare the last one as the time bonus for the stage in general will be able to make up for it.
- Golden GUN Beatles exist in these stages as well. Watch some videos and learn their locations for an easy 1000 points added to your score. Added to this while there aren't as many enemies in these levels and surely will there never be a case where you can get combo bonuses, they still give you points for destroying them so destroy any that spawn in front of you while you are completing the mission.
- The 100 Ring Missions are a tad difficult since you basically have to search for them, unlike Sonic/Shadow or Tails/Dr. Eggman who are almost handed their rings. Use video guides to find the perfect route to getting 100 rings if you are having trouble and you should be fine.
- The Hard Mode Missions spawn their items in the same place. Finding the items initially is difficulty but after you have found them all go, ahead and restart the level and go a speed run of the items for an easy A Rank. It's probably should be noted that, because of this, the Hard Mode Missions are easier to complete then the Normal missions since they are always randomized.
- Refer to this post for a further breakdown on each individual hunting missions
Tails and Dr. Eggman:
Both of these characters have slower missions due to their machines, however A LOT of enemies spawn. The main source of A Ranking their missions will be the ability for them to obtain multiple combo bonuses at every turn.
- Utilize the homing laser with both characters so you can hit multiple enemies at once and earn combo bonuses, there should never be a time where you hit only one enemy unless they're the only one left.
- When you are put in front of A LOT of enemies remember to try to put a cap on the kills you do. For example lets say there are 20 enemies in front of you, do not lock on to all of them only to be rewarded with one combo bonus. Divide your kills into two sets, aim for only 11 kills the first time for the PERFECT bonus for 2000 points then a 9 kill for the Awesome bonus for 1000.
