How to unlock the Super Sonic Genesis achievement in Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode I - Definitive Guide
There are seven Chaos Emeralds to collect. In order to access a special stage, you must complete a level with more than 50 rings, and once you complete the level jump into the giant ring at the end of the stage. (But be quick, as you only have a few seconds to do this.)
After this you will find yourself in a special stage. These are in order, and can be unlocked on any level. The video's below show what you can expect in all seven stages.
Additional note: you can retry at any point in the special stage, but you must do it before: you run out of time, or hit one of the red 'fail' orbs.

Quality post. And the knowledge of being able to retry at the last second is a life saver. Thanks for this.

No worries. I was sick of doing the harder missions and getting into these special stages not knowing what to expect. Finding these video's was quite hard, so I thought I would share this information with everyone.

As with "The First Chaos Emerald," you must go through Special Stages to collect the legendary Chaos Emeralds. You have to do it seven times over, with each Special Stage harder than the last. As a reminder, getting to the Special Stage requires beating a level with 50 rings and jumping into the giant ring just past the goal post. You can only get one Chaos Emerald per level, so if you grab a Chaos Emerald on the first level, you have to complete the second level with 50 rings to get the next Chaos Emerald.
Once in the Special Stage, move quickly but carefully, grab rings, and avoid "!" blocks at all costs. If you're almost out of time, or if you screw up badly, you can hit Start to pause, then select Retry to restart the Special Stage with no penalties. This will make it easier to practice, and you won't have to complete levels to get back to the Special Stage.
Since you can only get one Chaos Emerald per stage, and later stages can be hard, you should consider getting Chaos Emeralds in later levels and saving Splash Hill for the last few, to cut down on the amount of time you'll take to get back to the Special Stage, should you fail. (Thanks Mecha Richter!)
Once you have your seventh Chaos Emerald, achievement unlocked! And, as any Sonic fan will know, this means you get to use Super Sonic in every level. Huzzah!

not very helpful since each special stage can be confusing and needs to be done slowly or fast

Yea but didn't you say in the 1st chaos emerald review that "you can pause and go to Retry, and it will start the Special Stage over with no penalty." If this is true, why would it matter what levels you do or the difficulty of them as you would always be able to restart?
Is it because you can't restart once you hit an exit sphere?
I think I've answered my own question, lol.

To get to the special level, you need to collect 50 rings in the second act or the first. Passersby all the special levels and the achievement is yours
