I had trouble defeating him until I found an easy but foolproof way to defeat him:
Keep holding RB to block his attacks. He will punch and whirl two times. After that he pauses for a small moment. That's the time to attack. He will push you away after a few hits causing minimum damage.
Keep repeating this until he is defeated. Ignore the smaller enemies.
