How to unlock the Dark Matter achievement in Starfield - Definitive Guide

This is a cumulative achievement that is awarded for killing 300 humanoid enemies.
That means Va'run, Spacers, Ecliptics, etc.
These kills have to be on foot (no ship) and you can check how many you have by pressing the menu button and then Y.
It should be the first item under Combat.

Also something important to keep in mind is that NG+ does not reset this so feel free to start NG+ if you want.

As for how to get that many kills, it's not a lot.
I played through the story twice (once full and second abridged) and got it without almost any side content.
Make sure to get credit for the kills, though.
If you have an active companion one way to do this is to use a corrosive weapon or anything that does damage over time so they won't steal your kills as much.

This achievement didn't pop until the final credits started rolling. I had probably 800 kills.

If you want to do it "quickly", there are some good advices here. Short version: search for planets with 3 dots, they should have settlements with humans to kill and visit Almagest space station in Olympus (between New Atlantis and Volii).

While Another Bug Hunt (20G) is a bit of a pain in the ass when it comes to killing 300 creatures, because you’ll likely need to grind a few of those out, “Dark Matter” is the exact opposite.

In fact, I’d killed 300 human enemies in no time whatsoever in Starfield, and finished the main campaign (with very little deviation) killing 450 human enemies.

To keep track of how many human enemies you’ve killed, hit the button-page.png button, then hit button-y.png and then scroll down to Combat, where it’ll tell you how many “People [you’ve] killed.”

Shoot people, lots of them, and get this achievement. It’s as simple as that.
